Vegas Odds 4/13/09
Not a whole lot has changed in the last week, but some interesting trends have emerged now that the matchups have been set. Out West, the Red Wings and the Sharks have maintained their lines, but sneaking up quickly is Vancouver and the Blackhawks are getting more action as well.
In the East, the Bruins maintained their line, and Carolina and Pittsburgh saw more action to the good this week. But the Devils and Caps had their odds legthen slightly, as did those of the Flyers, while futures on the Rangers and Habs plunged like Elisha Cuthbert's neckline. How Montreal is still viewed as more likely to win the Cup than St. Louis is mysterious to say the least.
Carolina at 22-1 looks like a pretty solid ROI to me. And now that they're in, does anyone else see Anaheim as a relative bargain at 40-1 with that lineup?
What do you all think?

I heard one guy talking about odds on the radio, in addition to how good the team is, they have to keep in mind the fan base, particularly the fans that bet. By shortening the odds on a popular team they can create a perceived demand and get more people betting. On that same line of thought, if they do end up winning, they won’t have to pay out as much.
it’s fascinating to me what a racket it really is. I think MacV called last week: it’s about running interest. I can’t wait to check it out at the Mirage and Bellagio Wed-Thurs.
By the way, any rec’s for food in the big V would be helpful.

As for food, I thought Bouchon in the Venetian was very good and the prices weren’t bad for French bistro food (full disclosure: I live in NYC so my perception of prices and what is reasonable is probably not that reliable). Good for a classy meal without breaking the bank. I also ate about 5 sandwiches from the Earl of Sandwich right outside the Planet Hollywood sports book last time I was there – not exceptional by any means, but they are tasty.
I think the longer odds as opposed to the Devils can be summed up pretty easily: NJ has Brodeur, 3 rings, and was thought to be the frontrunner for the East when they were hot a few weeks ago. It’s fine, let them be favored.
many thanks. I am planning the vastly underrated double dinner schedule (5ish and 9ish), one upscale and one less so, just for fun.

Another place I forgot to mention before is Social House in “TI” (Treasure Island). It’s actually very good food and a cool atmosphere. It’s a fancy drink, small plate kind of place – a good place for the 9ish dinner. Plus, if you sit outside, you’ll be able to take in the “Sirens” show happening outside, which is so (unintentionally, I think) hilariously stupid that the South Park guys must have written it.
thanks-noted…I have not been to TI yet.

Check out Dal Toro at the Palazzo- good food, good prices, across from TI if you want to watch the show, and you can check out the Lambo’s when you’re done. Also the sportsbook bar & grill at Palazzo is pretty sweet – more like a sports bar than a sportsbook, but really nice to watch the game (standard bar food & overpriced drinks however).
Bouchon has a great weekend brunch.
Where are you staying??

Half the group is at Bellagio and the other, more sluggardly group are at Mirage (which I am actually looking forward to, as I’ve heard the reno’s went well, but the dining there is not up my alley). My other night is in Henderson.
what bar in town (not on the strip) would you recommend for NHL Wednesday night?

I like the redone mirage a lot – you should enjoy it.
I live in Henderson and I haven’t found any bars that meet my hockey watching wishes out here. I don’t like the sportsbooks because there’s too much going on and hockey will be relegated to one of the smaller screens. Probably any PT’s will have the games on, and if not they will if you ask. If you’re going somewhere that’s not a sportsbook I would just call ahead to make sure they have center ice if you want to watch the caps game

If you’re looking for a good sportsbook…Hilton (end of the train line) has a massive one…I’ve never had a problem finding a seat.
Food…Cathouse in the Luxor has great food at pretty good prices and a bordello feel.

For a nice dinner Stack in the Mirage is the best Steakhouse I’ve ever been to. Zefferino in the Venetian is amazing Italian. They are both going to be kinda pricey though. For a less expensive place Firefly is a place you should really check out. It’s on Paradise just off the strip but it’s still easy enough to get to. It’s a Spanish tapas place and I can’t say enough about it. I’ve also heard good things about Cathouse.
excellent—appreciated!

I was at Venetian for the NCAA championship game. Caps were 6-1 dogs at the time. Blues were 65-1 and they hadn’t even clinched yet. Still at 60-1, I see some value there.
Restaurant advice (warning, I am a food snob): Bouchon is excellent, and a good value as one of the other posters said. Great wine list, perfectly prepared bistro fare. My favorite restaurant on the Strip
Best steak in Vegas is at Craftsteak in MGM. Dry-aged bone-in ribeye for two…omnomnom. This is where to go if you like your steaks prime, or grass-fed, or Kobe…and you like them seared crisp on the outside while still bloody in the middle. Their sides and seafood are also very good.
Picasso in Bellagio is pretty good modern French/Spanish, and the art (original Picassos all over the place) is pretty darn cool.
B&B at Venetian. Terrible. Horrible. Awful. They do a carbon copy of Babbo’s menu, without any of the quality control and execution of the original. Service was a joke when I was there. A real shame, since Babbo is so good.
Mesa Grill at Caesar’s: Surprisingly good. Good use of seasonal local produce. Does not feel like a celeb-chef franchise, like B&B does.
Postrio at Venetian: Very good food, although it’s buried deep inside the mall in the Venetian so the atmosphere is meh.
