So I haven’t really been at my computer all day. Can someone give me a run-down or a link of a run down of all the happenings today?
I need 100% of you guys to give 110%.

GMGM is done punching Nylander in the face
and has finally gotten him to “wave” his NMC. let the games begin.
please?
Hey Pierre,
What did Brian Burke do on the 7th day? Sycophant.
"Good crowd out there tonight, boys, let's really try to win this one."
They got a bad case of TBA
“Keep fighting little guy, with your help of the Bluth foundation, we’ll live in a galaxy where TBA does not exist.”

That too (though I’m sure the Isles would’ve taken a nothing prospect back).

from tarik
I’ve been checking with my sources about Derek Morris and I’m hearing that the Flyers and Rangers are making a hard push for the veteran defenseman. No mention of the Caps. But that doesn’t mean they are not involved.
That's funny
EJ ESPN mentions the Caps, Rangers and Flyers. For what it’s worth.
"Good crowd out there tonight, boys, let's really try to win this one."
Hmmm.
Nah. McPhee is good at keeping his cards close to the vest, and he usually does things when folks least expect.
Gah, cleaning.
Got pulled away from the keyboard to do – ! – errands. :P
Been following trades and trade comments, though. I don’t think we move Nylander this year – who’d want him. I think whoever said buyout is right.
I also don’t think we do much. My guess is that the Derek Morris trade will happen about 2:59 PM, when Phoenix decides that nobody’s going to blink first and takes one of the offers on the table. If we don’t get him, I doubt we do much of anything; McPhee isn’t really interested in going for it all. Unlike Calgary. Holy smokes.
Honestly, though
Do you think Calgary’s moves really make them better than SJ or Detroit? I certainly don’t.
That being said, I don’t think they moved too much of consequence.
Better? No. Competitive with? They’re certainly closer.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Guerin for a 5th ROUND pick?
possibly up to a 3rd Round pick if they make the 2nd round of the playoffs?
What the hell? Was it double coupon day in Nassau?
4th if they make the playoffs.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Hopefully more truth than jest. :)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I understand the possible cap ramifications, but seriously? A 5th-round pick for Guerin, when Recchi gets an actual NHL body. If that’s the best offer, just say no.
its the curse of Bengt Gustafsson’s leg

+1
I bet so’s McPhee. GMGM is as cool and canny as they come, and he’s probably going to go down to the wire.
$3.35M...so we'd be on the hook for just under $1M
and would have to resign him at the end of the year.
Would be nice though.
Lebrun:
The Flames now have some big salaries next season in Jokinen, Jarome Iginla, Robyn Regehr, Dion Phaneuf and Miikka Kiprusoff. I think that almost guarantees that winger Mike Cammalleri, who is having a career year, will walk as a UFA July 1 because the Flames won’t be able to fit him under the cap.
by Scott in Shaw on Mar 4, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions
Not soon enough
The Flames are over the Salary cap NOW… but a wide margin.
Someone has to take off that Calgary sweater by 3:00. Unless someone is going in for surgery or something that we don’t know about.
No they’re not – they can’t be, even for a moment. They must be under.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Perhaps they already have something worked out that they haven’t announced yet?
Ron and Fez Noon to Three
by YvonLabresMoustache on Mar 4, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions
Then they worked something out
they picked up 4.5M in payroll today. Even pro-rated that is going to jam them up against the cap considering all the AHL’ers they’ve called up for injury reasons this season.
By posting that (which I should have block-quoted), I was making the point that they’re probably keeping him for this year’s run and will let him go in the summer.
by Scott in Shaw on Mar 4, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions
I know it’s a long-shot he might end up here, but the thought of him centering our 2nd line makes me giddy.
I don’t think it’s such a long shot in free agency, depending on what kind of deal he demands. He’s a perfect fit in this system.
Lemme get back to you in June.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Good for them. They could use a little more jam.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
If they move JayBo, they’re getting guys back who can help them now as well as in the future. I don’t think there’s any connection b/t Neil and a Bouwmeester trade.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Injured Reserve as of Feb 8, 2009 (Lacerated right calf) ?
Pick SPG for your chance to win probably nothing.
Looks like a good deal if he can come back for the playoffs. I think Fla is in for the playoffs and wont let go of JBeau
Doesn’t matter….like I says before, his agent is a mongoloid if he doesn’t have him out there to test the market
Ron and Fez Noon to Three
by YvonLabresMoustache on Mar 4, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions
What future? Their fans will be leaving without a post season run and I think JM is out if they dont make it this year.
Atlanta was in the same situation two years ago right? Get 3 exciting young players, I still think that they make the playoffs this year. With or without JayBo they aren’t going to win the Cup…
Difference being, Atlanta was the buyer there, not the seller. I think Florida absolutely needs to move Bouwmeester. Can’t let that guy walk for nothing.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yup, I guess I view them as the buyer because they have a lot of money in a check that becomes void on July 1. Move him, get something for the future and they have a pretty good team next year and 2 years down the road. The key to my argument is that JayBo isn’t going to be around in FLA come next Sept no matter what happens come April.
Gotta disagree
The Cats have a really good stable of D-men, with or without J-Bo. Combine that with some of their young forwards and their good goaltending and . . .
You have a team capable of giving the Caps a 6-2 beatdown on our home ice.
Florida is a good team now. We had best get used to it.
Yeah I see your point, I’m just thinking that JM wanted to keep JBo and if he thinks a playoff run might keep him it might be better to hold on. like trading to your self the sole rights to negotiate until July 1. I dunno…
I think they make the playoffs with or without Bouwmeester (and especially if they get some NHLers back in a trade for him).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
From another perspective, look at what the Caps did last year. They bought at the deadline in order to JUST make the playoffs. Look how that run (plus Ovie, obviously) energized the fan base.
Florida is the kind of team that could upset a higher seed easily, especially if Vokoun or Anderson gets hot.
I think it’s Morris or bust for the Caps. Can’t see them moving Nyls, and nothing else out there would seem to fit.
George is working....
…there’ll be deals announced after 3 PM.. they just have to be at NHL HQ by then.

remember that GMGM didn’t just tell the media not to expect anything…he told the players in a team meeting. unless he can pull the miracle nyls deal that we’ve all been after, i’m counting on it staying quiet.
I hadn’t heard that. Still, I wouldn’t put too much stock in it. It’s something you have to tell the team for a number of reasons.
seems a little unnecessary to me, though. with only one game left before the deadline (i think it was koken that said it happened last night before the game), why bother walking into the room and having one of your own players think you deceived him.
More like a younger Sean Avery.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

Antropov for a 2nd sounds right to me. Guering for a 5th (or even a 3rd) sounds like a great deal for Pitt.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
In years past, I think Antropov gets more than just a second and a late-round pick. The Rangers got a good deal because Burke is looking to unload everything and start from scratch.
Think of it this way...
Daniel Carcillo just got a live NHL body and a 2nd rounder. Do we think Carcillo>Antropov?
I’d rather have Carcillo on the Caps than Antropov. :)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
But Boston gave up more than I’d have thought for Recchi.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Totonto is now trying to FLIP Gerber?
A) Does Burke understand how “flipping” works? You have to have something people want. If anyone wanted Gerber, THEY would have taken him off waivers
B) Did anyone tell this to Toskala’s groin?
And what gets left in Leaf Country?
Toskala is done for the year. The Leafs riding Cujo for the rest of the year?

Good news is he’s not in Philly. Boston, Philly and New Jersey are essentially the same teams they were this morning. As much as we would’ve liked to see a little shakeup, the balance of power has not changed.
I dunno, I think the B’s acquired some nice depth, shoring up their third pairing and getting a shot in the arm on the power play. They gave up some assets for the future, but one can argue that they’ve improved themselves for a playoff run.
Yeah, but Havelid to NJ, Recchi and Montador to BOS, and Carcillo to PHI doesn’t change anything in the East. Those teams are all a little better, but not significantly.
The Rags and Pens, however, are probably better teams now.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

Boston just moved laterally. They picked up a decent depth defenseman w/experience and a grizzled veteran winger. And a 2nd rounder.
To get that, they moved a good young D-man and two forward prospects.
Biggest Loser?

if he turns out to be even close to his brother, that’ll be enough for me.
Just listened to Ken Holland on NHLN, speaking of the Winks, and he said something that made a hell of a lot of sense to me—there are plenty of additions to make out there at the deadline, but he is looking for upgrades not just right now but for next year as well, and he didn’t see any this year. I think that is a way I can digest the lack of movement today (barring, you know, Nyls to….). Not saying we could have improved our

Just making the point that it’s silly to overreact to the outcomes of a few games.
…and until there is a better model for roster-building and system development…
But point taken. :)
Love Detroit. Just that we’re not in their league at this point based on what we’ve accomplished. They are permitted to lose to Nashville 8-0. We are not. :-)
Russian Machine Never Breaks
Would have liked...
…a veteran back up goalie. Hedberg in ATL could have been had for a 4th or 5th rounder, probably… ah well.
maybe...
In not making any moves for a d-man, it will say to the players that management is happy with what they have, and will give our current d-men a spark?
maybe I’m dreaming…
………….likely.
Did you see the way they celebrated the 2nd goal last night?
I said to my wife – Bruce probably threatened to break up the team if they lost the third. They scored, so no one got traded. Why else would you flop on the ice to cheer a goal that put you down by 3 with 2 min left?
I wonder if the Ottawa press has raincoats in the first couple rows of the room sometimes, like at Gallagher concerts.
"Good crowd out there tonight, boys, let's really try to win this one."
Considering the players that moved today, I think the only ones that MIGHT have helped the Caps were Guerin, Morris, Leopold, and maybe Recchi. Guerin and Leopold seem to be steals, while it seems there was overpayment for Morris and Recchi. Given the vagaries of the market and the limited information we have, it’s hard to fault GMGM for not jumping into kind of a weird market.
Anaheim
WTF?
They keep Pronger, yet jettison guys like Kunitz, Moen, Huskins and Pahlsson. Wonder if they were asking too much, or that nobody wanted next year’s salary.
The offseason trades will be more interesting than today’s.

A salary dump, but to what end? Kolzig is done (LTIR) and probably done for good. Does he have to report – could he pass a physical?
They wanted the other guys and Tampa essentially said, “You can have them but you have to pay the rest of Kolzig’s salary to get them”.
Tampa is in seriously dire financial straits at present. $500k matters, I guess.

Capitals fans — as well as some players in their room — have to be disappointed GM George McPhee couldn’t make a move to upgrade his goaltending depth. McPhee worked the phones, but he couldn’t close on any deals. I believe the Caps could have used some help in goal and on the blue line. Last season, McPhee was able to get goalie Cristobal Huet and center Sergei Fedorov. Those deals proved vital for the club’s run for a playoff spot. This year, the expectations are higher. If the team doesn’t advance past the first round (where they were stopped last season), fans will be wondering why the Caps didn’t make a move. In his defense, the Caps didn’t have a lot of salary-cap space. On this deadline day, salary-cap issues really hamstrung several clubs around the league.
Waivers
Question: post-deadline, does anything change with waiver rules? Gary Roberts, Manny Legace, Miro Satan, and others are still available, right? Not saying I want any of them, but can clubs still claim guys on the wire?
