I’d argue some leadership and grit wouldn’t hurt us either. And a proven top-6 RW. Plus, I feel like NYI is the best play to unload Schultz and maybe Mo…
by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:34 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, I actually think Guerin would be a pretty good fit, depending on cost, of course.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I wonder if the Bruins knew what they were doing when they unloaded Jurcina for 4th? For a while it seemed like a steal, and he hasn’t been a bad pickup, but now? I think we would be luck to break even on that one…
by ThreePingPost on Mar 4, 2009 11:39 AM EST up reply actions
If GMGM traded Schultz or Mo for Guerin there should be a riot in the streets. I think Guerin could help us, but he’s not worth that much.
I mean, I’d take a bucket of pucks for Schultz at this point. I hate him.
Mo… could go either way. But I figure if Mo goes, Karl can come back. And we’d be able to worry less about delay of game penalties.
He’s not worth both though.
by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:39 AM EST up reply actions
You shouldn’t hate him. He’s good and will be very, very good. Be patient.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Dude’s been first or second among defensemen in +/- every year and he’s only 22 which is really young for his size and position. Plus, he plays against good opponents, who don’t score much when he’s on the ice and doesnt take amyn penalties. He’s a keeper.
I’d like him a whole lot more if the dude would hit occasionally.
by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:43 AM EST up reply actions
Why? Who cares if he hits if he’s effective without doing it much?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I understand not going out of his way to hit, but I’ll swear the guy actively avoids them. I remember at one point in the last Pens game he had a chance to rub Malkin out and instead just let him slide by between Schultz and the boards and pick up a lose puck in the corner.
by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions
Well, it was Malkin that dumped it, just before he went around Schultz.
by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:47 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, that’s generally called interference now, and it’s a point the NHL has been riding the refs on.
Well, I’ll stand corrected then. I thought they had a second-ish after the guy moved the puck where you could still take the body.
by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions
Recognize that Schultz’s game lends itself to not sticking out when he’s playing his best, but sticking out like a sore thumb when he’s not.
Look at the numbers. Be patient. People with hockey smarts know Schultz has a great future (and a damn good present/past). Don’t you want to be smart? :)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Eh… I’ll get there someday.
At the same time, I can’t help but feel like he’s too reactive. It seems like he’s out there going, “Excuse me sir, but I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t enter my zone. Oh, you want to come in? Well, okay, but promise you won’t score a goal or anything.”
by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 12:00 PM EST up reply actions
I can understand that to an extent but his game is based on position and disrupting the other team’s offense and he does it very well. Mo made a big hit Sunday and it led to a 2-on-1 and Kronwall did the same thing last night. Schultz doesn’t do that, and I don’t want him to.
Agreed! I think Schultz is very solid… which is more than I can say for some of the other guys on our D. Watching Neuvirth (or little Nemo as I call him) play last night just showed how crappy and inconsistent our defense is. It’s why I get fired up at the people who blame Jose all the time. I’m not saying people should stop hitting, but I think they need to focus more on minding the net and being in the right position at the right time. They’re not being paid millions to jerk it in the corner.
"For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction.
Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion; that it may sing; " - The Prophet
Remember John C. Odom
Minor league baseball player traded for 10 maple wood bats. Left his new team after three weeks. 6 months later he was dead from an overdose, possible suicide.
Yes, trading Schultz would be a very bad idea. I am not on board.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The team would have to move a lot of salary to make room for Guerin and I think it’d be hard to do that and come out a better team.
As much as i like Guerin I just don’t see the fit on this Caps team…

Was thinking about CBJ
as a possible road-trip game for next season if the Caps get them as an away game.
It’s not too far a drive from DC (under 6 hours). My family took a trip out there for the world cup in 2004.

Columbus is a good team this year who could go far (I’m thinking WCF). Also, it’s really not that bad a city.
Can't we get Chris Bourque a red jersey now? Thanks.
Oh for sure, he certainly has a much better chance of being in the playoffs. And I don’t mean to crap on the city, but if I had a choice…
Did Vermette grow up a sens fan? Probably not, since they didn’t exist until the 90s…
Can't we get Chris Bourque a red jersey now? Thanks.

If they wanted Nycholat, just claim him…morons. Who the hell is running that show? And Calgary’s pick won’t be that high this year.
Assuming it’s an 09 pick
And the Avalanche sink deeper into mediocrity. Unless this is a plan to ensure they end up with Tavares, they’re freaking idiots.
And yet they worked the Caps two weeks ago. Ugh.

Hey, sweet news!
Alex Ovechkin just left practice after taking a slap shot off of his right foot. He went to the bench in obvious pain, removed his skate and then was helped to the dressing room by a trainer.

They moved Vermette and I thought the only skater with a more obvious ticket out of town was Neil.

I had no idea who he was, so I googled him. His Wikipedia entry already has him playing with the Penguins. Updating that took what, 30 seconds?
Update:A team spokesman just told reporters that the injury is not believed to be serious. But judging from Ovechkin’s reaction — he smashed a stick or two on the way to the dressing room — this bears still watching.

I can think of $19.5 million reasons why it doesn’t feel too bad.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I almost wouldn’t blame the guy if he refused to waive the NTC out of spite. He basically backed out of more money and years to sign here because his wife likes the area, and now we’re trying to make him leave again.
I could see that feeling like a bit of a backstab.
by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions
I want him gone but he doesn’t owe it to anyone to waive that NMC, no matter how much we, GMGM, and the team don’t like it.
Yeah I’m inclined to agree. He’s just overpaid at this point.
Any chance we could waive him to free up cap space? I don’t really know how these things work.

But yes, he’s the longest of long shots to move, even if he was to waive his NMC.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
but why go after him now when you can pick him up on the cheap after the caps buy him out?
by Natty Bumppo on Mar 4, 2009 12:18 PM EST up reply actions
Chicago has even less cap space than the Caps do (or in any event, not enough). They have the same problem, except their Nylander is a goalie.
speaking of which…how do those contracts compare? obviously the concensus is that both bulin and huet are overpaid…but are their contract situations any worse than nylander’s? couldn’t we buy either of them out over the summer the same way we would with nyles, and wouldn’t we rather have another goalie than a center that doesn’t dress?
by Natty Bumppo on Mar 4, 2009 12:21 PM EST up reply actions
I’m not sure on the numbers, but I’m guessing that Huet’s contract is too long (and it would just be toxic) for that to make sense and I don’t think they’re willing to trade Khabi, who may also still be injured.
As you can see, I didn’t do a lot of research here.
Personally, I would rather have Nylander. I am completely comfortable with rolling the dice on Neuvirth or Varlamov.

hahaha, yeah. I actually replied to that comment but I guess you didn’t see it. I, too, love Botch. I’ve never been to Washington State BUT i am interviewing These Arms Are Snakes tomorrow.
Wait, WHAT???
You’re freaking interviewing them? I can’t wait to see them. Are you going to the show?
I’m a huge TAAS fan. I drove all the way to Baltimore a couple years ago just to watch them open for Mastodon.
Yeah, playing in boston tomorrow and I know i’m, at least, speaking with Ryan. It’s for the radio station I DJ at.
Oh god, how I love Mastodon.
Ditto on Mastodon. Can’t wait for Crack the Skye.
That was a weird tour. TAAS and Mastodon sandwiching Cursive and Against Me! The folks who were there to see Cursive REALLY stood out.
Hey, no knocking Cursive. “Domestica” is one of my all time favorite albums. Though one time I saw them in Buffalo and I wanted to punch a lot of people there in the face.
yeah, It’s the station for Berklee College of Music. Done it for 3 years and it’s been a ton of fun. Especially since I get to pick my own music.
Do you dig Russian Circles? Brian Cook is their bassist now. I thought “Station” was one of the best albums of ’08.
I dug Enter but I haven’t heard Station. I don’t know how I let the news of Brian Cook being their bassist slip me. I’ll have to go check out Station then. And I did like what he did with Mouth of the Architect
Station rocks. It’s slightly “softer” than Enter, but the arrangements are better.
If you dug Botch, you should also check out Narrows, it’s Dave Verellen’s new band. Sounds a lot like Botch.
I also really like Helms Alee, which is Ben Verellen’s new band.
nah. Unfortunately, I live in Boston. Wish I lived in maryland still so I could see them there (even if I’ve never been to the R&RH)
The funny thing is, I swear that I see at least 10-15 fellow Caps season ticket holders at every “heavier” show that I go to. I saw a ton of people I recognized at a Sword show (including the Goat).
That’s good!

According to Tarik “Michael Nylander – once again – wouldn’t confirm whether or not he has waived his no movement clause. But he’s certainly thinking he could be on the move today.”

More from Tarik:
*Michael Nylander – once again – wouldn’t confirm whether or not he has waived his no movement clause. But he’s certainly thinking he could be on the move today.
“I’m just going to let it play out,” Nylander said. “There’s nothing I can do. In my case, I have a little say in what goes on. But I’m like everyone else.”
Asked if he expects to be a Capital later this afternoon. “You never know,” he said.
Boudreau said he’s also talked to Nylander in recent days, in an effort to keep the veteran “apprised” of the situation.

Derek Morris...does this work?
1. Please Poti on LTIR until season end
2. Trade Morris for a midrange pick…like a 5th rounder.
Before you say Phoenix would not do this. They want to get the $1M owing to Morris off the books and do not have many teams that he would be willing to go to.
by CapsFanSince1979 on Mar 4, 2009 12:50 PM EST reply actions
Poti is not going to qualify for LTIR
You cant use LTIR to game the Salary Cap. That will result in sanctions against the Caps.
Is there some kind of minimum that a player has to have already missed to go on LTIR? I think a recurring injury on VC ice is justifiable, at least in terms of passing the laugh test.
Which brings up an interesting point – if Kozlov’s groin isn’t 100% (or at least at a point where it can hold up the rest of the way), do they look F?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I don’t believe so. I do know they need to be cleared by a doctor to do so, however.
by OvechkinLaichsSemin on Mar 4, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions
No.. LTIR is based on the injury expectations
The teams needs to file an exception request due to a Bona Fide Long Term Injury that has supportive medical opinions suggesting that the player will miss AT LEAST 10 games and 24 days.
The League can both pre-emptively decline to grant an LTIR exception and/or review the actions of the team and player afterwards to determine that the LTIR exception was not valid ajd therefore subject to sanctions.
With Montador to the B’s does this help us or hurt us?

At this point, are any of you expecting a flurry of big deals in the next hour and a half?
It seems the cap and the recession may have gummed up the works here, as most teams’ desired moves are contingent on other clubs taking salary in return. Unless we can get someone to take Nyls or Morrisonn I don’t see what we can do here.
Spezza/Connolly to Columbus became Antoine Vermette.
Pronger to Boston became Steve Montador.
An NHL goalie to Buffalo became Mikael Tellqvist.

by OvechkinLaichsSemin on Mar 4, 2009 1:41 PM EST reply actions
I think Antropov or Guerin is the biggest forward out there and Morris is the biggest D. Once those guys go, people will start turning to plan B and C. I do think TOR, NYI, PHX will wait as long as they can and wait for people to big higher.
I think J-Bo is in too precarious of a situation. Florida probably wants the world for him, given that they’re on the cusp of the playoffs.
Watch, he’ll be the next trade to go down, and he’ll have been traded for one of the Fata brothers.
They’re not just on the cusp – they are playing good hockey right now. Florida has a legit team. Trading J-Bo is going to hurt them unless they get big returns.

What will mark this day a success for the Caps? Given the moves we have seen in the East (also the West) would the day be a failure if GMGM can’t pick up someone? Or are we just getting bored when we say something needs to happen?
