P. McGuire is an idiot.

McGuire is a waste of space for the one of best announcing gigs in hockey

He’s actually said some things I agree with. For my money, the staff TSN’s using is pretty good.

I’m just commenting on his mic not working and he started leaning over to whoever he was next to so he can be heard

Anyone have any thoughts on Sean O’Donnell?

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:31 AM EST reply actions

Hah.

His lack of mobility worries me. I see him as similar to Erskine.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

At this stage in his career, he doesn’t upgrade over any of the Caps current defensemen, to say nothing of Alzner, Sloane or Helmer.

Too Irish…but other than that…meh…

Am I the only one who’s still semi-hoping we end up with Guerin?

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:32 AM EST reply actions

Count me out. This team needs a defenseman.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

I’d argue some leadership and grit wouldn’t hurt us either. And a proven top-6 RW. Plus, I feel like NYI is the best play to unload Schultz and maybe Mo…

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I actually think Guerin would be a pretty good fit, depending on cost, of course.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Mar 4, 2009 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

This team would have no problem if they wanted to “unload” Schultz.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

I wonder if the Bruins knew what they were doing when they unloaded Jurcina for 4th? For a while it seemed like a steal, and he hasn’t been a bad pickup, but now? I think we would be luck to break even on that one…

by ThreePingPost on Mar 4, 2009 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

I think it’s basically a wash.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

If GMGM traded Schultz or Mo for Guerin there should be a riot in the streets. I think Guerin could help us, but he’s not worth that much.

by treat on Mar 4, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

I mean, I’d take a bucket of pucks for Schultz at this point. I hate him.

Mo… could go either way. But I figure if Mo goes, Karl can come back. And we’d be able to worry less about delay of game penalties.

He’s not worth both though.

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

You shouldn’t hate him. He’s good and will be very, very good. Be patient.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Mar 4, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Dude’s been first or second among defensemen in +/- every year and he’s only 22 which is really young for his size and position. Plus, he plays against good opponents, who don’t score much when he’s on the ice and doesnt take amyn penalties. He’s a keeper.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

I’d like him a whole lot more if the dude would hit occasionally.

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

Why? Who cares if he hits if he’s effective without doing it much?

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Mar 4, 2009 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

I understand not going out of his way to hit, but I’ll swear the guy actively avoids them. I remember at one point in the last Pens game he had a chance to rub Malkin out and instead just let him slide by between Schultz and the boards and pick up a lose puck in the corner.

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

If Malkin was going after a loose puck, rubbing him out would have been interference.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Well, it was Malkin that dumped it, just before he went around Schultz.

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that’s generally called interference now, and it’s a point the NHL has been riding the refs on.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Well, I’ll stand corrected then. I thought they had a second-ish after the guy moved the puck where you could still take the body.

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Depends on the specifics, but if he “takes away” Malkin’s ice, it’s a penalty. Schultz tends to play those situations safe though, and without seeing it I have no idea what the call might have actually been.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

If Schultz moves over into Malkin’s skating lane and stands him up that’s interference.

by wittcap79 on Mar 4, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Recognize that Schultz’s game lends itself to not sticking out when he’s playing his best, but sticking out like a sore thumb when he’s not.

Look at the numbers. Be patient. People with hockey smarts know Schultz has a great future (and a damn good present/past). Don’t you want to be smart? :)

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Mar 4, 2009 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

Eh… I’ll get there someday.

At the same time, I can’t help but feel like he’s too reactive. It seems like he’s out there going, “Excuse me sir, but I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t enter my zone. Oh, you want to come in? Well, okay, but promise you won’t score a goal or anything.”

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

I can understand that to an extent but his game is based on position and disrupting the other team’s offense and he does it very well. Mo made a big hit Sunday and it led to a 2-on-1 and Kronwall did the same thing last night. Schultz doesn’t do that, and I don’t want him to.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed! I think Schultz is very solid… which is more than I can say for some of the other guys on our D. Watching Neuvirth (or little Nemo as I call him) play last night just showed how crappy and inconsistent our defense is. It’s why I get fired up at the people who blame Jose all the time. I’m not saying people should stop hitting, but I think they need to focus more on minding the net and being in the right position at the right time. They’re not being paid millions to jerk it in the corner.

I’d take Guerin over nothing.

by grapejoos on Mar 4, 2009 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

The team would have to move a lot of salary to make room for Guerin and I think it’d be hard to do that and come out a better team.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

As much as i like Guerin I just don’t see the fit on this Caps team…

Exactly. Not a big deal. It’s a business.

by zephyr on Mar 4, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough. I’m sure he would rather be earning his money than stealing it though, despite his crappy play. The guy is just washed up and a bad fit on this team.

by grapejoos on Mar 4, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

I almost wouldn’t blame the guy if he refused to waive the NTC out of spite. He basically backed out of more money and years to sign here because his wife likes the area, and now we’re trying to make him leave again.

I could see that feeling like a bit of a backstab.

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

I want him gone but he doesn’t owe it to anyone to waive that NMC, no matter how much we, GMGM, and the team don’t like it.

Yeah I’m inclined to agree. He’s just overpaid at this point.

by zephyr on Mar 4, 2009 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

but why go after him now when you can pick him up on the cheap after the caps buy him out?

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 4, 2009 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

Chicago has even less cap space than the Caps do (or in any event, not enough). They have the same problem, except their Nylander is a goalie.

by grapejoos on Mar 4, 2009 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

speaking of which…how do those contracts compare? obviously the concensus is that both bulin and huet are overpaid…but are their contract situations any worse than nylander’s? couldn’t we buy either of them out over the summer the same way we would with nyles, and wouldn’t we rather have another goalie than a center that doesn’t dress?

by Natty Bumppo on Mar 4, 2009 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not sure on the numbers, but I’m guessing that Huet’s contract is too long (and it would just be toxic) for that to make sense and I don’t think they’re willing to trade Khabi, who may also still be injured.

As you can see, I didn’t do a lot of research here.

by grapejoos on Mar 4, 2009 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Khabi is in his last year

at $6.75M then hes UFA.

Huet is $5.625 through 2011-12.

by Wisper on Mar 4, 2009 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

by Khail SMASH on Mar 4, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

Do you dig Russian Circles? Brian Cook is their bassist now. I thought “Station” was one of the best albums of ’08.

by D'ohboy on Mar 4, 2009 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

I dug Enter but I haven’t heard Station. I don’t know how I let the news of Brian Cook being their bassist slip me. I’ll have to go check out Station then. And I did like what he did with Mouth of the Architect

by Khail SMASH on Mar 4, 2009 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

Station rocks. It’s slightly “softer” than Enter, but the arrangements are better.

If you dug Botch, you should also check out Narrows, it’s Dave Verellen’s new band. Sounds a lot like Botch.

I also really like Helms Alee, which is Ben Verellen’s new band.

by D'ohboy on Mar 4, 2009 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

Nothing wrong with softer, as long as the songwriting is still solid.

Already up on Narrows and Helms Alee. Good to have Dave and his pipes in a band again. Also, I’m still sad I never saw Harkonen live. oh well. I’ll just have to see Helms Alee at some point.

The funny thing is, I swear that I see at least 10-15 fellow Caps season ticket holders at every “heavier” show that I go to. I saw a ton of people I recognized at a Sword show (including the Goat).

god DAMN, that makes me wish I was still in Maryland.

by Khail SMASH on Mar 4, 2009 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but I still get jealous of Boston/NYC/Philly because of all the bands that just bypass DC.

by D'ohboy on Mar 4, 2009 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

hahaha, well there are a ton of heavy bands who play in Worcester which is an hour away and I don’t own a car so it makes things pretty difficult.

According to Tarik “Michael Nylander – once again – wouldn’t confirm whether or not he has waived his no movement clause. But he’s certainly thinking he could be on the move today.”

More from Tarik:
*Michael Nylander – once again – wouldn’t confirm whether or not he has waived his no movement clause. But he’s certainly thinking he could be on the move today.

“I’m just going to let it play out,” Nylander said. “There’s nothing I can do. In my case, I have a little say in what goes on. But I’m like everyone else.”

Asked if he expects to be a Capital later this afternoon. “You never know,” he said.

Boudreau said he’s also talked to Nylander in recent days, in an effort to keep the veteran “apprised” of the situation.

Derek Morris...does this work?

1. Please Poti on LTIR until season end
2. Trade Morris for a midrange pick…like a 5th rounder.

Before you say Phoenix would not do this. They want to get the $1M owing to Morris off the books and do not have many teams that he would be willing to go to.

by CapsFanSince1979 on Mar 4, 2009 12:50 PM EST reply actions

by grapejoos on Mar 4, 2009 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

Poti is not going to qualify for LTIR

You cant use LTIR to game the Salary Cap. That will result in sanctions against the Caps.

by Wisper on Mar 4, 2009 12:51 PM EST up reply actions

Is there some kind of minimum that a player has to have already missed to go on LTIR? I think a recurring injury on VC ice is justifiable, at least in terms of passing the laugh test.

err…recurring groin injury. Could have done the same with Kozlov before he came back, btw.

by OvechkinLaichsSemin on Mar 4, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

No.. LTIR is based on the injury expectations

The teams needs to file an exception request due to a Bona Fide Long Term Injury that has supportive medical opinions suggesting that the player will miss AT LEAST 10 games and 24 days.

The League can both pre-emptively decline to grant an LTIR exception and/or review the actions of the team and player afterwards to determine that the LTIR exception was not valid ajd therefore subject to sanctions.

by Ovechwin on Mar 4, 2009 1:36 PM EST reply actions

So we need a Bruins killer in return. What’s Guy Lafleur up to these days?

Or Ulf Samuelsson?

If Boston is so worried about beating the Caps they should just trade complete teams with the Panthers.

by OvechkinLaichsSemin on Mar 4, 2009 1:41 PM EST reply actions

I think Antropov or Guerin is the biggest forward out there and Morris is the biggest D. Once those guys go, people will start turning to plan B and C. I do think TOR, NYI, PHX will wait as long as they can and wait for people to big higher.

I don’ think J Bo is going anywhere.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

I think J-Bo is in too precarious of a situation. Florida probably wants the world for him, given that they’re on the cusp of the playoffs.

Watch, he’ll be the next trade to go down, and he’ll have been traded for one of the Fata brothers.

by D'ohboy on Mar 4, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

They’re not just on the cusp – they are playing good hockey right now. Florida has a legit team. Trading J-Bo is going to hurt them unless they get big returns.

by sincitycapsfan on Mar 4, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

This is Florida, after all. They could easily still choke.

by D'ohboy on Mar 4, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

Possibly, but I still think they get the 6 seed when it’s all said and done.

by sincitycapsfan on Mar 4, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

GMGM said he was going to sit tight, maybe he wasn’t kidding.

by Sct112 on Mar 4, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

by OvechkinLaichsSemin on Mar 4, 2009 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Impossible. He never does what he says.

Unless this is some new level of psychological warfare.

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

I am going to be very disappointed if GMGM does nothing. At least throw us a bone with a Matt Cooke-type pickup.

by katzistan on Mar 4, 2009 1:42 PM EST reply actions

I really think they need to make a move for another defenseman.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, or someone who can pop in rebounds from up close. But don’t sit there and do nothing at all. We’re all on edge here!

by katzistan on Mar 4, 2009 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

I would really love Ryan Smyth, but I guess there’s no way we could get him or fit him in under the Cap. Too bad.

by katzistan on Mar 4, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe they should let Fehr get top six minutes….

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

No. No. No.

Smyth would be great, only if he made half of what he’s making now, didn’t have an NMC and wasn’t old.

Trade Day Success

What will mark this day a success for the Caps? Given the moves we have seen in the East (also the West) would the day be a failure if GMGM can’t pick up someone? Or are we just getting bored when we say something needs to happen?

by Sct112 on Mar 4, 2009 1:46 PM EST reply actions

Something needs to go down for a serious playoff run. Sitting idle, to me, is a failure today.

by OvechkinLaichsSemin on Mar 4, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

It’s hard to say, given that we don’t know what the asking prices are for different players. But still, I really want another defenseman.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

The team has shown in the past month that it’s on the cusp of being great and can easily be horrible.

I think something needs to be done, anything.

by zephyr on Mar 4, 2009 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t understand anyone who thinks it’s a failure if they do nothing. If it’s not there, it’s not there.

by David Getz on Mar 4, 2009 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

Good Point, since we’ll never know that the deal breaker for Nyls was that Flash had to be included we can’t really call the day a failure. But you have to think that something is out there that would have helped the team right?

We’re all just panicking because of the last 2 games…and 2 weeks. The caps have looked remarkably sub-standard.

is it possible we hear of deals as late as 3:30 or 4?

by Mobsky on Mar 4, 2009 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

Isn't it obvious?

The last two games we tanked, on purpose, to make FLA feel like they have a shot at the division, so they won’t trade JBo to Philly or Boston.

BB is so smart.

by bilspacecadet on Mar 4, 2009 1:53 PM EST reply actions

by vt caps fan on Mar 4, 2009 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

by sincitycapsfan on Mar 4, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

That was with like 2 games left in the season… Little different.

by Murshawursha on Mar 4, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

by sincitycapsfan on Mar 4, 2009 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
