His cap hit is $2.07M (or $2.42M, depending upon whom you believe). Interested?

Yikes. I thought the hit was about half that.

If I’m McPhee, I wait until the deadline passes and see if I can fit Roberts in under the cap off re-entry waivers.

The “funny” thing is that his salary is about half that, but incentives that he’ll never hit bump his cap hit up to that bloated number.

Maybe that’s what I was thinking of.

by David Getz on Mar 3, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

His incentive is he is gets a $10,000 bonus every night he’s in the lineup. So of course he’ll never make it to 82, but still not a bad gig.

by Hooks Orpik on Mar 3, 2009 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

So shouldn’t his cap hit be reduced to his salary ($1,250,000) + number of games he’s played * $10,000 ($390,000) + the maximum number of games he could play the rest of the season * $10,000 (~$180,000)? That’d be around $1,820,000.

It’s tricky since only vet players (like above 35) can get any kind of incentives, other than entry level rookies.

I think Roberts’ true cap hit is $2.07 million….$1,250,000 in base salary plus $820,000 for the $10k a game actually played bonus.

All bonuses count towards the cap (even if the player doesn’t hit them) so it’s my understanding* that Roberts’ cap hit still has to be $2.07m even though there’s no chance he actually makes that amount of money.

*my understanding could be wrong but I’m confident it’s close to right enough to post it.

by Hooks Orpik on Mar 3, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Your understanding does not mesh with mine – incentives come off the cap hit as soon as they’re unreachable. Usually, that doesn’t matter because they’re production-based incentives and, theoretically, a 37-year-old could get 50 goals in the season’s last game.

But games played incentives should come off as they become unachieveable.

by J.P. on Mar 3, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

that was my understanding as well

by Sombrero Guy on Mar 3, 2009 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

I should clarify – it’s possible that he has other bonuses in his contract as well that could get him the $820,000k (I obviously don’t know his contract deets). For example, he could get $10,000 for each game played, $500,000 for hitting 20 goals, etc., all of which max out at $820,000, in which case the cap hit wouldn’t be reduced to more than the minimum of the non-games-based incentives.

Gotcha, well you are the lawyer, not me. I thought I remembered that all bonuses counted against the cap, but I believe you if you say otherwise. (And I guess it kinda makes sense for the performance based ones that count until the end of the year)

According to what I read (like this: see note from 30 June) it indicates the $820k bonus comes straight from the games played clause.

Perhaps, if the $2.42 million was the actual figure, the Lightning added an additional $350k in performance based bonuses like you mentioned. But from what I read, if the actual number was $2.07m, it should be just the salary plus the games bonuses, so perhaps you’d be right about them adjusting his cap hit down as of today.

The ins and outs of Gary Roberts contract….Who knew that’d be a topic today here, huh? Makes you wonder what we all could be talking about tomorrow!

by Hooks Orpik on Mar 3, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

And I can’t see him making it to re-entry waivers (and certainly not to the Caps on re-entry), so don’t go buying those Roberts sweaters yet.

Who would we play him with? i can see him working well with Laich and Fehr

by ns on Mar 3, 2009 1:49 PM EST reply actions

He’d play instead of Brash.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Mar 3, 2009 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

Can we waive Brash then? Waivers doesn’t clear any cap space right? only if someone picks him up?

by Sct112 on Mar 3, 2009 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Wouldn’t the cap hit only be half of that? i would love to have Chuck Norris in the playoffs.

If they claim him on re-entry it’d only be half.

Further confirmation that the Bolts’ summer of ’08 was one of the worst off-seasons EVER.

Satan was also placed on Waivers

by Sombrero Guy on Mar 3, 2009 1:55 PM EST reply actions

They should pick him up so that he and Ovie can have a uni-brow competition.

by D'ohboy on Mar 3, 2009 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

I thought that this was some sort of shot at Roberts. Then I realized you were talking about Miroslav and not the Prince of Darkness. Its been a long day…

by Sct112 on Mar 3, 2009 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

Could we get Recchi instead?

by D'ohboy on Mar 3, 2009 1:55 PM EST reply actions

roberts…recchi…

is guy lafleur is still playing? how about joe malone, he scored 44 for the canadiens, and that was 1917. i remember it well because chelios lost out on the calder trophy the year before.

Nicely played.

I don’t think that this is that outlandish. Maybe not those two guys, but they are rentals, and they provide a couple of things that this team sorely lacks, grit and experience. Feds has the experience but not the grit, Laich the grit, not the long run in the playoffs. I’m more and more convinced that this team lacks a strong lockerroom presence that will keep the young guys focused. Roberts might be that guy.

by Sct112 on Mar 3, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

abraham lincoln had good size and grit…is he still available?

by luketheriault on Mar 3, 2009 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

plus we already have a giant statue of him here in washington…its the team he was born to play for!

by luketheriault on Mar 3, 2009 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

I’m concerned about his foot speed to be honest. Although I imagine he could write a mean intermission speech.

by Sct112 on Mar 3, 2009 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

It would give all those guys who yell “FREAK” at Chara something to do the other 39 home games a year.

by D'ohboy on Mar 3, 2009 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

I’m holding out for Cyclone Taylor. Once scored a goal skating backward dontcha know?

by D'ohboy on Mar 3, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Jon Sim

Roberts…no.

However, according to the article Jon Sim is also on waivers… very interested in him only because of his ridiculous record agains the Caps vs. the other 29 teams in the NHL. He has 61 career goals, 12 vs. Washington in 24 games. In other words, if he plays only against the Caps, he’s a 40-goal guy. He also seems to like to score against the Hurricanes (against whom he has 8 goals total in 20 games, making him a 30 goal guy over a season). Against the rest of the league, he has no more than 3 goals against anyone.

Maybe he likes the climate here in the Mid-Atlantic. But GMGM should claim him!

Now when the Caps play the Islanders they’ll beat them before OT.

yoda voice begun, the trade deadline has

I’ll shut up now.

I’m not sure I’m that interested in Roberts though.

by CapitalsKremlin on Mar 3, 2009 2:51 PM EST reply actions

can’t claim anyone until we shed one of our 50 contracts, no?

Can't we get Chris Bourque a red jersey now? Thanks.

I’d take him just to annoy the Pittsburgh fans and be able to co opt WWGRD?

Rest assured not every Pens fan wants him again. Frankly I’d be pretty upset if they picked him up. He’s old and injury prone, which is the last thing Pitt needs down the stretch here. However, if the Caps are interested in a guy who will provide leadership in the locker room then he’d be a good pick.

If nothing else is coming through that door, I would be interested. Try to get Morris (or someone like that) first, though. The veteran forward with leadership can probably be had for less of a cap hit than this.
