Yikes. I thought the hit was about half that.
If I’m McPhee, I wait until the deadline passes and see if I can fit Roberts in under the cap off re-entry waivers.
The “funny” thing is that his salary is about half that, but incentives that he’ll never hit bump his cap hit up to that bloated number.

His incentive is he is gets a $10,000 bonus every night he’s in the lineup. So of course he’ll never make it to 82, but still not a bad gig.
So shouldn’t his cap hit be reduced to his salary ($1,250,000) + number of games he’s played * $10,000 ($390,000) + the maximum number of games he could play the rest of the season * $10,000 (~$180,000)? That’d be around $1,820,000.

It’s tricky since only vet players (like above 35) can get any kind of incentives, other than entry level rookies.
I think Roberts’ true cap hit is $2.07 million….$1,250,000 in base salary plus $820,000 for the $10k a game actually played bonus.
All bonuses count towards the cap (even if the player doesn’t hit them) so it’s my understanding* that Roberts’ cap hit still has to be $2.07m even though there’s no chance he actually makes that amount of money.
*my understanding could be wrong but I’m confident it’s close to right enough to post it.
Your understanding does not mesh with mine – incentives come off the cap hit as soon as they’re unreachable. Usually, that doesn’t matter because they’re production-based incentives and, theoretically, a 37-year-old could get 50 goals in the season’s last game.
But games played incentives should come off as they become unachieveable.

I should clarify – it’s possible that he has other bonuses in his contract as well that could get him the $820,000k (I obviously don’t know his contract deets). For example, he could get $10,000 for each game played, $500,000 for hitting 20 goals, etc., all of which max out at $820,000, in which case the cap hit wouldn’t be reduced to more than the minimum of the non-games-based incentives.

Gotcha, well you are the lawyer, not me. I thought I remembered that all bonuses counted against the cap, but I believe you if you say otherwise. (And I guess it kinda makes sense for the performance based ones that count until the end of the year)
According to what I read (like this: see note from 30 June) it indicates the $820k bonus comes straight from the games played clause.
Perhaps, if the $2.42 million was the actual figure, the Lightning added an additional $350k in performance based bonuses like you mentioned. But from what I read, if the actual number was $2.07m, it should be just the salary plus the games bonuses, so perhaps you’d be right about them adjusting his cap hit down as of today.
The ins and outs of Gary Roberts contract….Who knew that’d be a topic today here, huh? Makes you wonder what we all could be talking about tomorrow!
And I can’t see him making it to re-entry waivers (and certainly not to the Caps on re-entry), so don’t go buying those Roberts sweaters yet.

roberts…recchi…
is guy lafleur is still playing? how about joe malone, he scored 44 for the canadiens, and that was 1917. i remember it well because chelios lost out on the calder trophy the year before.
I don’t think that this is that outlandish. Maybe not those two guys, but they are rentals, and they provide a couple of things that this team sorely lacks, grit and experience. Feds has the experience but not the grit, Laich the grit, not the long run in the playoffs. I’m more and more convinced that this team lacks a strong lockerroom presence that will keep the young guys focused. Roberts might be that guy.
abraham lincoln had good size and grit…is he still available?

Jon Sim
Roberts…no.
However, according to the article Jon Sim is also on waivers… very interested in him only because of his ridiculous record agains the Caps vs. the other 29 teams in the NHL. He has 61 career goals, 12 vs. Washington in 24 games. In other words, if he plays only against the Caps, he’s a 40-goal guy. He also seems to like to score against the Hurricanes (against whom he has 8 goals total in 20 games, making him a 30 goal guy over a season). Against the rest of the league, he has no more than 3 goals against anyone.
Maybe he likes the climate here in the Mid-Atlantic. But GMGM should claim him!
The Stats behind Sim... it really is remarkable....

can’t claim anyone until we shed one of our 50 contracts, no?
Can't we get Chris Bourque a red jersey now? Thanks.
I’m no cap-ologist, but that sounds about right.

I’d take him just to annoy the Pittsburgh fans and be able to co opt WWGRD?

Rest assured not every Pens fan wants him again. Frankly I’d be pretty upset if they picked him up. He’s old and injury prone, which is the last thing Pitt needs down the stretch here. However, if the Caps are interested in a guy who will provide leadership in the locker room then he’d be a good pick.
