The rest of the release:
Miskovic, 23, was a first-team All-ECAC Hockey selection this season as a senior at St. Lawrence after earning third-team honors in 2007-08. He shared the team lead and led all NCAA defensemen in goals with 16 in 38 games. Miskovic, who played all 154 games in his college career, scored five power-play goals this season and a team-high four game-winners, while adding nine assists for 25 points.
A 6’1", 195-pound native of River Forest, Ill., Miskovic had eight goals and 21 assists as a junior and was named the Saints’ outstanding defenseman. He won the Clark Cup (playoff champion) and Anderson Cup (regular-season champion) as a member of the United States Hockey League’s Cedar Rapids Roughriders in 2004-05, prior to attending St. Lawrence.
Miskovic joins an organization that has seen six former college free agents contribute with the Capitals at the NHL level this season: Keith Aucoin, Jay Beagle, Sean Collins, Graham Mink, Brian Pothier and David Steckel.

with Carlson, Bruess and now this kid, we are getting a decidely collegiate feel in our young ranks. keep at it GMGM
Carlson is in the OHL. In fact, I think his decision not to go to college was a positive factor for GMGM when he selected Carlson.
I concur. Carlson has been nothing but impressive in his rookie season in the OHL. He was also voted to have both the hardest and best shot in the eastern conference by the coaches in the league. His statistics also jump right off the page with 76 points in just 59 games. I’ll admit that I haven’t seen this guy play at all, but I am already infatuated with his progress on paper.
Just a random thought, anyone know the last time a AHL team won the Calder Cup and their NHL Team won the Stanley Cup.
Not sayin’ anything but given the talent in Hershey, I have a feeling they could be hoisting it this year.

How can we sign these guys, given that we’ve got the 50 contract limit?
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
Maybe tryout contracts don’t count against us? I’m sure DMG’s got the answer.

Their contracts don’t kick in until 2009-10 (next year), and the Caps are nowhere near 50 yet for next year.

GMGM player acquisition strategy:
(1) Draft junior players (or convince the guys you draft to go to juniors)
(2) Sign undrafted college players when they leave college
(3) ?
(4) Profit!

Can someone explain how the undrafted status works and why they aren’t drafted?
Did they just not have enough talent to get drafted and then matured in college?
In essence, yes. Here’s what the CBA says about who’s eligible to be signed as an undrafted free agent:
(iv) a Player age 21 or older who: (A) has not been selected in a
previous Entry Draft and (B) played hockey for at least one season
in North America when he was age 18, 19, or 20 and shall be
eligible to enter the League as an Unrestricted Free Agent pursuant
to Article 10.1(d)
(v) a Player age 22 or older who has not been selected in a previous
Entry Draft and shall be eligible to enter the League as an
Unrestricted Free Agent pursuant to Article 10.1(d).
You still can draft players who are over 22 (Mark Streit was drafted when was ~25), but players that age essentially become free agents and can be signed without being drafted.
Interesting. I think McPhee is planning for the salary cap to drop with these signings.

Why would that be? College players are actually very often more expensive b/c you often have to compete with other teams to sign them. Take Collins, for example – he’s an $850,000 cap hit, whereas a guy like Helmer is a $475,000 cap hit.
I certainly don’t disagree that McPhee may envision the cap going down – most do – but I don’t think this is in any way evidence thereof.

Then why else would he do this sort of thing?

The off chance that he and his scouts saw something they liked in the guy?

Zero chance he joins the Caps.
Slim chance he joins the Bears. He’d have to sign an ATO with Hershey once NDak’s season is over (which could be tomorrow) for that to happen.
