Where can I find data for total goals and assists scored league-wide in the NHL this season? I checked behindthenet and nhl.com, but maybe I'm just missing it.
I'm thinking of coming up with a stat that weighs the value of assists. One of the arguments in the Malkin v. Ovie for MVP debate is that Malkin has more assists. Malkin supporters say this means he makes his teammates better; Ovie supporters say assists mean less than goals. There should be a weigh to measure how much less an assist is worth than a goal.
Seems to me that an easy way to do that is to divide total goals by total assists to come up with the value of each assist in terms of goals. Muliply that by each player's assist total and add it to his goals, and you get an adjusted goal total for the player.
But I'm stuck trying to get the numbers for total goals and assists scored league-wide. Any help would be appreciated, both in terms of data sources and problems with the formula.
