FWIW, I’d consider Varly, Neuvy and Jose all to be pretty solidly butterfly goalies.

I think it would be interesting if someone took another angle and looked at how the adoption of the butterfly style has ravaged shooters. It’s my feeling that the drop in scoring during the 1990s-2000s was much more the fault of the butterfly than it was the trap.
I don’t think even DMG could run a controlled analysis of what has caused the drop in scoring. Better goaltenders, butterfly, better defensive systems, better athletes, bigger equipment. There was a lot changing all at one time and it’s hard to tell what was responsible for the drop.
You’re probably right on that, but I do think D’ohboy is right and that the butterfly (as part of a goalies being more technically sound and polished in general) plays a bigger role than most people realize. Of course most of that is just based on my experience as in net. Trust me – the butterfly is God’s gift to goalies….even if I had to stop playing in net because of my bad back and hips.
