"[Alexander Ovechkin] should continue to celebrate goals in the manner which has made him famous, but he should also understand when someone decides to go all Dale Hunter on him."

That jackass also refuses to publish my two comments about his post. So not only is he stupid, he’s afraid to publish intelligent, reasoned dissent.
First, I love Ovie’s response to Cherry’s comments. Outright dismissal of the blowhard is the best way to go, even better when done with a sense of humor about it.
Second, and the saddest part of this whole thing, is that these people truly don’t get who Ovechkin is. His reactions and enthusiasm couldn’t be more genuine, whether it’s when he scores, his teammates score, or even during the warmup skate. Hell, go to a practice at Kettler and you’ll see him celebrate almost the same way after a practice goal for christ’s sake.

This is why I’ve never had a problem with Ovechkin – it’s genuine celebration rather than disrespect or an effort to show up the other team, and you can’t fault someone for that in my book.
I’ve always felt the same way. You only have to pay the smallest amount of attention to him to realize that Ovechkin is just an exuberant person in general. He celebrates because he’s happy and because he really, really like to win, not because he’s trying to be an ass. I don’t understand how people can feel justified saying the guy deserves to be intentionally injured for just being the crazy, hyperactive, hockey-loving nutjob that he is.
And on what planet are people living on that they think Ovechkin has gotten a “free pass”? People have been trying to clobber him for years—same as any superstar—it just doesn’t generally work out very well for them.

Definitely. I remember last year when the Caps won an OT game but AO went and congratulated every PKer because of that amazing PK performance they had to put (ahhh the days…) on to get us to overtime. How anyone can interpret his behavior as self-centered after that is just ignorant.
I believe that was a shootout win over P-burgh IN the Igloo, and Quentin Laing blocked three shots. it was also a 5 on 3 kill. Caps won in a shootout. I was at Glory Days, where a Pens fan told me he was getting too old for that kind of shit. I recall Semin scored the GWG in the shootout in round 3, and my being the only voice to rise.
Now at GDs, it’s mostly Caps fans, as the Pens fans have relocated to Buffalo Wild Wings. My town is so effed up.
Can't we get Chris Bourque a red jersey now? Thanks.
Maybe he was thinking of Bryan Muir?

At this point venting becomes more of a therapy session so I’m kinda done with it myself.
Persistent/strong feelings on this specific subject probably need to go to more influential targets than Caps-specific blog entries (I’ve posted my share on more than a couple of sites).
Worst case is no penetration, best case we get readers of non-hockey/sports media saying “Who is this guy?” “What’s so controversial?” “Lets see some of those goals”
Pushing the xenophobe button on that level- tough call, could be some backfire. But don’t kid yourselves into thinking Don Cherry didn’t consider the pro’s and con’s before making his statements.
After all the word is any publicity is good publicity. And the man obviously likes publicity.
Is Cherry Happy Now
Check out Ovie’s muted response after he scores that last goal yesterday. Maybe that’s the good Canadian way Don was looking for.
Ovie doesn’t tend to celebrate goals when we are up or down by 4 (unless it is a hat trick or goal # 4 or something). what’s there to celebrate when you are getting creamed all over the ice
