Interested to see which team takes the ice tonight. Going to dinner with some friends tonight, so I’ll be keeping track via mobile phone on trips to the head…

I don’t particularly care who shows up tonight, as the biggest task in front of the Caps is to be fresh for the playoffs, imo. But it would be nice to see a decent effort. 4, as they say, is most definitely e-nuff.

by fat_daddyo on Mar 14, 2009 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

Be very wary of going through the motions while worrying about staying fresh. If they want to sit some guys here and there I’m ok with that, but the 20 guys dressed need to be out there working hard.

This isn’t football. You stay strong during the stretch, and it’s endurance that keeps a team going in the playoffs. You don’t take games off just to be fresh in the playoffs. I strongly disagree with that concept.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Mar 14, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Ah. Well.

Since you have so kindly instructed me on the matter, I will duly admonish the team that it is extremely important that they put forth their best effort. I shall also share your observation that they’re not playing football. Feds will be extremely disappointed; the last time I addressed the team he confided that he loves to scream “touchdown!” every time the puck finds the back of the net.

;)

by fat_daddyo on Mar 14, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

XD, fair point.
I was more taking a shot at football players being lazy and being able to take games off, than your ideas, which do have pretty good roots, though I disagree with them.

No worries, brother. I wasn’t taking a shot at you, just trying for a laugh. No stress allowed between Caps fans.

I’m a commenting n00b anyway, but will be verbally duking it out with my Canes-loving friend tonight instead of commenting. Enjoy the game and go Caps!

1. Is tonight a sellout?
2. Ugh…Chris Lee.

Have at it, coffin-nail hammerin’ people.

Not to be overly superstitious, but the last time I read that, Florida was 3 for 6 on the PP.

"Good crowd out there tonight, boys, let's really try to win this one."

by Bald Pollack on Mar 14, 2009 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

Is it too early

for a magic-number countdown?

By my math, it’s 13 combined points to clinch the SE…a regulation win tonight brings that down to 9!

by fat_daddyo on Mar 14, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

it’s actually 16 to clinch on florida (15 if we have the tiebreaker). worried, i’m not.

Nice play earlier where Backstrom passed to Ovechkin and immediately drove to the net. The rebound from Ovi’s shot didn’t come his way, but it could have. Backstrom keeps getting better…

They all seem to be “on” tonight. It seems like its been awhile for all of them at the same time.

Has anyone else thought that AO should spend more time down low on the PP? It’s too easy for defenses to isolate him at the point, I like when they have to collapse on him down lower to make room for more people. Plus, there is nobody better at reacting to loose pucks and making them scoring opportunities, like that goal.

Yeah, but the PP was looking terrible before that. Too many giveaways. Shouldn’t have ever happened.

by Gould Old Days on Mar 14, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

why does it have this stupid view??

by Simply Sensational on Mar 14, 2009 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

i dont know……. but ill take the goal!

by desperado on Mar 14, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Wait, Staal just tried to stab Ovechkin with his stick behind the net.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Mar 14, 2009 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

And there it is. Backstrom!

by Ames on Mar 14, 2009 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

And a point for Nylander. That was a nice pass.

by Ames on Mar 14, 2009 8:26 PM EDT reply actions

He sold it really well. no look.

by Gould Old Days on Mar 14, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Semin, Backstrom and Nylander? Great keep-away team.

by Rob Parker on Mar 14, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Fehr. But if he’s on a line with Laich and Semin, he needs to be cycling with Laich in front of the net.

by Gould Old Days on Mar 14, 2009 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

nice check by Erskine on Fehr(?)

by ns on Mar 14, 2009 8:30 PM EDT reply actions

In fairness, Aucoin only comes up to Erskine’s hip.

8-19-28- 52 on the ice for all six goals so far tonight. Live by the (Young) Guns, die by them…

Someone must have told him it was a big game…

by Rob Parker on Mar 14, 2009 8:36 PM EDT up reply actions

It has indeed been awhile.

by Ames on Mar 14, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

What was the stickhandling display?

by Gould Old Days on Mar 14, 2009 8:38 PM EDT up reply actions

why didnt semin just get the puck

by Simply Sensational on Mar 14, 2009 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

Good that he scored after the PK expired.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Mar 14, 2009 8:40 PM EDT reply actions

Is that goal on Green or Mo? Did Green think Mo had it covered, but Mo was out of position getting a stick from Flash?

by Gould Old Days on Mar 14, 2009 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

That goal is on the team’s inability to touch up the puck to start a penalty kill.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Mar 14, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Theo’s having a Hell of a game, but I don’t think he’s seeing the puck well – he keeps playing the wrong angles on his rebounds or drives from the dots.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

the puck is bouncing like crazy out there

by Simply Sensational on Mar 14, 2009 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

Saw that coming. They have had almost no time in the offensive zone this period.

by Ames on Mar 14, 2009 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

Our get up and go………got up and left.

by Pi on Mar 14, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

WHERE IS SEMIN?

Why is nobody reporting on this?

by ninefttall on Mar 14, 2009 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

Nevermind, I see him…

by ninefttall on Mar 14, 2009 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

Semin kills the ’Canes because they like to play up and down all skill games. Right in his wheelhouse

by Rob Parker on Mar 14, 2009 9:32 PM EDT reply actions

Fantastic Kill!

by Ames on Mar 14, 2009 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

Had a chance to step on their throats, we did not. Again, no killer instinct. Just could not put them away. We’re lucky to be going to the gimmick. Ugh….

by Pi on Mar 14, 2009 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

I love BB but that was a terrible call not having Semin out for that final rush. Go all 4 young guns there.

by Rob Parker on Mar 14, 2009 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

Afraid to lose as opposed to trying to win…

by Pi on Mar 14, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Theo is planted firmly on top of his game right now.

by Rob Parker on Mar 14, 2009 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Give Theo the extra point for OT and the shootout.

by Ames on Mar 14, 2009 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

I love watching “Wardo” do that to his timber.

by Gould Old Days on Mar 14, 2009 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

SPG

BaldPollack wins with 5 points.

Pick SPG for your chance to win probably nothing.

by xiix on Mar 14, 2009 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

those of you who had opined that Semin might be trade fodder or might not be a long-term fit here in DC — and I see where some of that comes from….step away fro the crack pipe.

by Pi on Mar 14, 2009 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

I had no tv tonight, but listened to the last 6 mins of the 3rd and the OT/SO on Xm Radio, and the announcers made it sound like Theodore was on?? How did he play throughout the game? 4 goals after back to back 1 goal games doesn’t seem stellar, but was he better than that?

by Theo60 on Mar 14, 2009 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

IMO, for the Caps to succeed, Eric Fehr needs more than 8+ TOI

by Pi on Mar 14, 2009 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

And for Eric Fehr to have more than 8+ TOI, he needs to put his ass in front of the net.

That said, the young guns had too much TOI today for sure.

by Gould Old Days on Mar 14, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Too much ice time = sloppy defense.

most def.

by Ovechwin on Mar 14, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Alex Semin had 4 points, but was a -3 on the night.

by Ovechwin on Mar 14, 2009 10:10 PM EDT reply actions

So what? So was Green, and Ovi/Backs both are -2. Things happen. I’d take Semin’s 1+3+GWG at any time…

by fnralch on Mar 14, 2009 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

No complaining, chillax.

It was more of a “woah, he had too good a game to be -3.”

by Ovechwin on Mar 14, 2009 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Tonight was one of those special teams wins it :

3PPG for
0 against.

by Ames on Mar 14, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions

What a strange game…

by Ovechwin on Mar 14, 2009 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions

There is no joy in shootouts. If we had lost this game we’d call it a tie so I’m not going to gloat about winning the skills exhibition. PP saved us tonight, because it was garbage defense on at least 3 of the four goals.

First goal: Green/Erskine eye-roller.
Second goal: if you have a 5-on-1, what happens when you don’t score. Oh, the other team does. How is it that the two guys back on that play were Semin and Ovechkin? Were we playing five forwards?
Third Goal: Tired PK, plus taking a penalty while a man down. Was there any doubt what was coming?
Fourth Goal: More of SOB line on the ice too long.

Thankfully, Thedore was huge, especially on the OT PK.

As for winning the shootout…whatev. We blew a 2 goal lead at home. Again.

At least it counts as 2 points in the standings, which is an improvement over the last homestand. :P

Watching the Sharks / Kings game, or at least the end. Trying to decide which is more embarrassing for the team involved: giving up a 2-on-0 shorthanded breakaway, or getting a 2-on-0 shorthanded breakaway and failing to record a shot on goal, let alone score?

We were playing 4 forwards and pseudo-forward mike green on the 5 on 1.

by Ovechwin on Mar 15, 2009 8:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Much as I’ll take the 2 points and (more importantly) the SPG win, this would be a much different discussion if the 2nd best PP in the league wasn’t 3 for 4 against the 21st ranked PK unit.

Thankfully, its a mute point :)

You mean “moot”? Mute means it makes no sound (true enough but still).
