That’s a great question. I think the answer is ‘no’ because the CBA says a team can only have fifty players on SPC (standard player contracts).
But I also think players on tryout cannot be sent to the AHL, so Finley would have to be on tryout with the Bears, not the Caps.
Okay, another contract question: when is a contract year up? After the regular season ends, after the playoffs, or at some other date? And when do our rights to Finley expire? I don’t see why GMGM wouldn’t sign him, so I’m wondering when that can happen.
The Caps have until August 15 of this year to sign Finley.

Does not count – an ATO isn’t an SPC.

The other thing here is that if the Caps were to sign Finley to an SPC, it would be for 2009-10, and they don’t have 50 contracts for next year yet, so no worries there.

Right, he could sign an ATO with the Bears, and sign an SPC for 2009-2010. I think.
Also, are you pretty confident they’ll sign him? I don’t see why they would let both of their first rounders from that draft go bust, but you never know. Maybe Finley pulls a Blake Wheeler.
I have no inside info on this one, but would assume that if Joe wants to play in the NHL, he’ll sign with the Caps without much difficulty.

So…I’m a little unclear on this. Does this mean that Varlamov is playing without a backup goalie on the bench while Neuvirth is still playing here in DC?
What would the Hershey and the Capitals do if (God forbid) he would have to miss a game due to injury or illness at the last minute?

Yeah, Cheese is Varly’s back-up right now, no problem.

Found it interesting that Pothier is on the Clear Day list. I wasn’t aware that he would have to be included to continue to play in Hershey for the reconditioning stint. Too bad for Hershey for having to use a Clear Day roster spot on Pothier if he is only going to be there for a few more games. On the other hand, makes you wonder if they will try to keep him there.
