Bears Announce Clear Day Roster

The team's press release:

HERSHEY – The Hershey Bears announced today its 2009 Clear Day roster in preparation for the upcoming 2009 Calder Cup playoffs. The announcement was made Thursday by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.

Each American Hockey League team submits a Clear Day roster to the league consisting of a maximum of 22 players. According to AHL by-laws, only those players listed on a team's Clear Day roster are eligible to compete in the remainder of the 2008-09 AHL regular season and in the 2009 Calder Cup Playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension.

Goaltenders: Michal Neuvirth, Simeon Varlamov

Skaters: Bryan Helmer, Tyler Sloan, Sean Collins, Karl Alzner, Dean Arsene, Brian Pothier, Sami Lepisto, Staffan Kronwall, Keith Aucoin, Alexandre Giroux, Graham Mink, Kyle Wilson, Quintin Laing, Andrew Gordon, Mathieu Perreault, Chris Bourque, Jay Beagle, Andrew Joudrey, Oskar Osala, Francois Bouchard

In residence: Greg Amadio, Steve Pinizzotto, Darren Reid, Grant McNeill, Kip Brennan, Daren Machesney, Patrick McNeill

Teams may also add signed junior players or players on amateur tryout contracts, only after their respective junior of college seasons are complete.

Does an ATO count against the 50 players under contract cap? I’m thinking of Big Joe here.

That’s a great question. I think the answer is ‘no’ because the CBA says a team can only have fifty players on SPC (standard player contracts).

But I also think players on tryout cannot be sent to the AHL, so Finley would have to be on tryout with the Bears, not the Caps.

Okay, another contract question: when is a contract year up? After the regular season ends, after the playoffs, or at some other date? And when do our rights to Finley expire? I don’t see why GMGM wouldn’t sign him, so I’m wondering when that can happen.

The Caps have until August 15 of this year to sign Finley.

(and they will)

Does not count – an ATO isn’t an SPC.

The other thing here is that if the Caps were to sign Finley to an SPC, it would be for 2009-10, and they don’t have 50 contracts for next year yet, so no worries there.

But they could sign him for this year and end him to Hershey for the playoff, right?

by David M. Getz on Mar 12, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right, he could sign an ATO with the Bears, and sign an SPC for 2009-2010. I think.

Also, are you pretty confident they’ll sign him? I don’t see why they would let both of their first rounders from that draft go bust, but you never know. Maybe Finley pulls a Blake Wheeler.

I don’t see any reason the Capitals wouldn’t sign him.

I have no inside info on this one, but would assume that if Joe wants to play in the NHL, he’ll sign with the Caps without much difficulty.

So…I’m a little unclear on this. Does this mean that Varlamov is playing without a backup goalie on the bench while Neuvirth is still playing here in DC?

What would the Hershey and the Capitals do if (God forbid) he would have to miss a game due to injury or illness at the last minute?

I think that, in that case, Machesney would be able to play given the “unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension” caveat.

Yeah, Cheese is Varly’s back-up right now, no problem.

Exactly. Clear Day isn’t as apocalyptic as they make it sound. It’s meant to prevent teams from beefing up their AHL affiliates by sending players down as opposed to preventing the minor league squad from calling players up.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

Found it interesting that Pothier is on the Clear Day list. I wasn’t aware that he would have to be included to continue to play in Hershey for the reconditioning stint. Too bad for Hershey for having to use a Clear Day roster spot on Pothier if he is only going to be there for a few more games. On the other hand, makes you wonder if they will try to keep him there.
