Is Don Cherry the long-lost grandfather of Sidney Crosby?
Kukla's Korner had this little tidbit from Steve Simmons at the Toronto Sun. Seems Don can't figure out why he's unpopular these days.
The story itself seems like sour Grapes (pardon the pun). It paints Don as a victim of mean-spirited people who don't understand that Don loves hockey like every blue-blooded hockey (re: Canadian) fan and that Don does great things for people and for hockey.
I think Don Cherry is quirky and entertaining and he likes being on the edge. When you stir the pot like Don does, you have to expect a bit of splatter. Writing an article about how popular Don is don't address why the criticism is worse now. It's not objective reporting, it's a PR campaign for a Canadian "Icon". The article doesn't try to address Don's xenophobia or his hypocrisies. It merely bemoans the fact that everyone doesn't love Don.
I expect we'll all be getting an Evite later today from The Sun - a pity party for Don Cherry. It will be a costume party, come dressed as your favorite sofa.
