Let the Guerin to Caps rumor mill begin
Probably won't last long, but does anyone else catch this or have video?
It was a really quick mention by Ron MacLean in Hockey Night In Canada during the second intermission of the Oilers/Wild game.
PJ Stock said how Guerin was scratched and everyone thinks it's a trade. MacLean said Guerin did approve a trade, but didn't know where, but "grumblings are that it's to Washington."
Anyone see this or have any thoughts? Think Michael Nylander could be going the other way?

Update
HNIC just came back from break and said Pierre LeBrun is checking each Eastern Conference team and that Carolina, Florida, Pittsburgh, Boston, New Jersey, Montreal and Buffalo “all said no to Guerin and Washington is believed to be the team.”
I can’t believe that Nylander would waive his NMC to go to Long Island. At the very least it will probably need to be a team that’s going to the playoffs. Not that I don’t want to see Nyls in another color jersey…that’d be like Christmas/Chanukah/Kwanza coming early.
In terms of Guerin, I’m not sure what he brings to the table…aside from experience what does he bring to the team? And is whatever he’s bringing what this team needs? IMO, if GMGM does anything it needs to be a top 3 stay at home dman and a top 6 winger with grit…Guerin is neither of those.
Guerin’s got the ability to score 25 goals in a season, weighs in at 220, hits, and has had over 100 PIMs eight times in his career. I think he’s a top six wing with grit.
I guess when I said grit, I meant someone that can get under the other team’s skin while having real potential to score some goals…not a 40 year old winger that has less points than Nylander since the all-star break.
There are very few players who can do that and play in a legitimate top six role and even fewer who are available; I think Guerin is the best that’s out there.
And I wouldn’t put too much stock in the Nylander/Guerin comparison given that Nylander’s one on of the highest scoring teams in the NHL and Guerin’s on a team that Mirtle described as a “transparent attempt to ice one of the worst teams in the 30-team era”.
I would definitely NOT give up a First for Guerin (unless they are taking Nyls with that first). Guerin is over the hill and I don’t think he adds anything that our top 9 wings don’t already have (yes, top 9!). SJS gave up a top prospect and a first for Guerin a couple years ago and Guerin didn’t do anything to help them, even getting tons of time playing with Thornton and Marleau, two great centers. Guerin has gotten all the PP time in NYI because they have nobody else and he still hasn’t been great. I don’t see who he takes off of our PP so I don’t see what he adds to the team.
[Total aside, I am watching the 1st INT of PHI/NJD right now and regarding the Guerin situation Stan Fischler just said that Manhattan is EAST of Long Island. That guy is such an aaaaaaaaassssssss. How does he have a job in hockey?]
Well, he does have a Stanley Cup ring, albeit from 1995. And beyond experience of playing a lot of playoff games, that’s what someone wants on a team.
If McPhee is looking for anything out of Guerin, assuming he’s ours, it’s the leadership and respect intangibles that analysts like to boast about what makes a Stanley Cup team.
I’ve read (sorry, too tired right now to link) that there’s not exactly that voice in the Caps locker room that will point the team in the right direction as Fedorov and others are more of lead by example guys, so perhaps it’s that what the Caps need: someone to hold young players accountable; someone to say “hey dumb ass, nice goal earlier, but what the hell are you thinking about that hook?” to help cut down on penalties.
You need a guy on the bench providing a calm voice on the bench getting the guys to focus, and I can see Guerin help eliminate those playoff jitters.
I don’t see him putting up gaudy numbers, even with this group of talen. But he’s worth it to me for a clutch game-winning goal or two in the playoffs.
We already have Fedorov for the playoff experience and leadership. After the PHI series last year I don’t think lack of experience is a huge concern for this team. It only takes one playoff series loss to figure out what the playoffs are all about (See PIT). I don’t see how a deadline acquisition guy is going to walk into the locker room of the 2nd seeded team in the conference and start yelling at players about accountability. I’m not sure our team would handle that very well.
I think they don't need a leader...
they need an enforcer – Brash is not doing it. Just look at the game this week, when Ovi gets his teeth cleaned with a stick blade, and Brash goes after someone else. Who’s gonna lay the hits on PHI and BOS when the time comes? Ovi would love to, as would Green, but that really shouldn’t be up to them, should it?
Give me a D who makes forwards keep their heads up and on a swivel 100% of the time he’s on the ice, and is willing to dish out the hits. A little more toughness would help this team a lot. I’m afraid the Caps are getting a bully mentality – big and tough when they can light up the scoreboard, but able to get manhandled when momentum shift away from them. The 3rd period of the PHI game is something I don’t want to see repeated 4 times in one series in the playoffs.

David Lee on Comcast Sportsnite:
“One quick note, The Caps are closing in to finishing a trade for New York Islander forward Bill Guerin. The deal could be done by day’s end. That’s gonna do it right now for Sportsnite presented by Geico, I’m David Lee. Do yourself a favor, go out and have a great day”
The keyboard is mightier.
Just of note...
For this to work, the Caps would have to be trading a player, not just a pick, back to NYI as they have 50 players under contract.
Salary-cap wise, it would work if it would be Nylander (but as Yoshietree said, why would he approve to go to NYI? Just to get the hell out of town?).
Nylander’s cap hit isGuerin’s is $4.5 million, coming off the books this summer.
I can't point to a source ....
But it’s my understanding that Jay Beagle sat out last night’s game and Bob Woods wouldn’t say why, even when pressed. We know the Islanders are probably looking at a rebuild. Would Jay Beagle be a good fit on the Islanders’ team? Probably.
If Beagle’s being moved it’s so the Capitals can get under the 50 contract limit. Dude’s 23 and has 6 points in the AHL this season, so the core of the trade has to be a prospect or pick (or more than one of each).
Beagle’s not being moved.
And wouldn’t the core of the trade have to include at least some moderate amount of salary going the other way? I’m not sure I see it.

If so, I’m not a fan of the move (unless it’s a precursor to something else on the back-end).

If Mo gets moved, if would have to be to clear the decks for a Derek Morris or some other D upgrade.
Which is, of course, entirely possible.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
I doubt it’s Morris. Spector has said that he’s only willing to waive his NMC for a Western Conference team.
On a related note, this is why it’s nice to have extra D-men. It’s hypothetically possible that the Caps could move two D-men and simply replace them with Alzner and (eventually) Pothier. Not that they SHOULD mind you, but they could.
Nope
Washington’s actually a pretty good place to be right now if you’re a hockey player, by all accounts.
Beagle has a ton of upside potential, doesn’t you think? His point totals are more a function of the concussion than anything, I thought he played well when given the chance on the Big Team.
I am a bit of a hoarder by nature but this makes me uneasy unless Guerin is in for at least another year. I’m not sure I’d give up Beagle on this deal.
If it ain't broke, don't break it.

FYI, I’ve been following this on Islanders Point Blank, which has been fantastic. The latest:
10:10 am: Although you’ll probably stay with this story til the very end, it would be so tempting for me to assist in dragging you along. But we’ve now gotten to the part where I can advise that if you want to go to church, go for a jog, grab some pancakes at the diner or hang out with your families (nooooooo!), it’s fairly safe to say you have a few hours. This is based on a text from a friend I trust big-time: This could take all day.

One report has the latest as Caps trying to free up cap room.

Could do worse
The Caps could do worse than Guerin. A lot would depend on what was headed the other way, but Guerin is a valuable player with lots of experience. He can chip in on the PP (although probably not on the PK anymore).
My big concern with Guerin is his lackadaisical attitude toward defense. In his two best scoring years with the Bruins in 01-02, he was a combined -5 on good teams. He backchecks like Ovie. . . when Ovie was a rookie – which is to say, that he doesn’t really backcheck at all. This is the tendency that has caused him to bounce from team to team despite his scoring prowess.
The weird thing with Guerin is that he clearly has the speed to backcheck, unlike say, Andrew Brunette. He won the fastest skater competition a few years ago, so this is clearly just a matter of willingness. Maybe Bruce can motivate him where Hitchcock et. al failed? Regardless, at least he has the speed to keep up with the Caps’ top six, unlike Nylander.
that is an excellent point D’oh. I was looking at his career +/- and the teams he was on and it’s pretty pedestrian, but he’s a damn sight better than Nyls up on RW if he gets paired with OV and Backs.
Seriously, how could anyone not get fired up to play in the BB system? Look what happened to Feds when he got un-Hitched.
I just saw that.
Also, Jay Beagle’s been called up. Why? Who knows? Does he replace Fehr (who I was worried about after that slam into the boards?) Is there something else going on?
I look at this as being a bit like the weather report. We’re being told 6 inches, which either means we’ll get buried or we’ll get a dusting, and judging by this winter, more likely the latter.
I’m all for adding Guerin if it means moving Nylander. I’m all for a bag of pucks if it means moving Nylander too, though.
In seriousness, I thought about Guerin as being a good add for this team and think he would be – but I’ll be a little let down if this is the big move, if the team only gets him for Mo, or if it sends something even better out the door.
Some aspects to this that are not making sense to me:
1. Why would the Islanders want Nylander, who has to be paid for another year, and why would the Caps add Guerin without subtracting Nylander?
2. On the salary cap issues, don’t the Capitals have some room with Chris Clark on the LTIR and Alzner in Hershey?
I’m tending to think Tarik has got this one right, in the end.
Does anyone else feel like this is taking forever? Let's focus on Nyls instead.
I kinda feel that if a player was yanked out of warm-ups, they’d be traded by now. I’m kind of looking at this latest Long Island-sponsored circus in two ways, and it could still affect us.
Could this be a three-way trade? Now that Tarik said Guerin’s probably not heading to Washington, we still have Nylander out for a third-straight game. And both GMs appear to be mum on both ends for their respective situations.
Or more on the second point of that last one. Forget Guerin now. What’s happening to Nylander? Where is he going? Having him out healthy for three games trumps the dramatic Guerin marathon that now may not involve us at all.
I very serious doubt Nylander’s going anywhere with him NMC. My guess is that his absence from the lineup is a reflection on his performance.
I don’t think so. At this point in his career Nylander’s not only thinking about himself, but his family as well. I don’t think he’s going to suddenly decide he wants to commit to a whole new place for two years just because he has been scratched for a week.
…a whole new place for one year. He doesn’t have the NMC his final year. (Or just a whole new place for a couple of months since he’s getting bought out over the summer by whomever is stuck with that contract.)
I think if a player waivers a NMC it becomes void thereafter. But if you’re Nylander and you’re interested in having stability, the possibility of having that aspect get voided makes any move even less appealing.
If we operate under the assumption that Nyls is going to be bought out in July, enriching him but also removing stability for future employment, wouldn’t it make sense for Nyls to consider that GMGM is going to work hard NOW to get him to a locale where he’ll be comfortable?
honestly, this is just dreaming on my part. I wish we had more leverage.
I don’t think that’s right (but could be wrong). I think you have to waive it every time you move.
