Friday Caps Clips
Lets hit the links:
- WaPo recap and blog; WaTimes recap and more.
- GMGM on Brian Pothier's return to the lineup this season: "I wouldn't rule it out." Well, he'd better rule it in or out by Wednesday, no? [Capitals Insider]
- Bill Guerin's made his list, checked it twice, and D.C.'s on it. But at that price? No thanks. [NYI Point Blank]
- Here's a name we haven't discussed: David Hale. [Sporting News]
- Don't they say the trade deadline's going to be quieter this year than in the past every year? [CBS Sports]
- Daren Machesney may be struggling in Hershey, but at least he gives a rat's posterior, unlike Martin Gerber. [JWH]
- Daniel Snyder could learn a lot more than ten things from Ted Leonsis, but at least this is a start. [Hogs Haven]
- I can't be funnier than the link itself, so just click it. [The Onion]
- Maybe it's not the ice, but the pucks. Nah. [KK]
- I know what you're thinking and thank you, I'm flattered. [Freakonomics]
- One year ago today, we were basking in the glows of Matt Bradley's right, Sergei Fedorov's past and the rest of the Caps' deadline acquisitions, and two years ago today we bid farewell to Dainius Zubrus and Jamie Heward on Deadline Day '07.
- Finally, on this date way back in 1982, Chris Valentine set a Caps rookie record with four goals in one game. Take that, AO!

$100 million to Haynesworth, $64 million to Hall.
Another day at the office.

I’m sure it’s just a typo, but 54 mil to Hall.
Still. wtf.

Try not to think about it… and just be happy you will be able to avoid it if you want too for the next 6 months.

As a proud Hokie alum, he is one of the few that I’m ashamed to associate with the school.

He was a good CB. But he was like that guy Ronyell Whitaker. He would take a dumb personal foul on any play that was in some way critical. It was so frustrating to watch.

One of Ted’s items was related to the character of guys drafted/acquired. Danny’s failing here, too.

You’ve got to take into account though that the general character of a football player is way different than that of a hockey player. Most football players (especially on the defensive side) are essentially expected to have the attitude of an enforcer in hockey.

On ice/on field attitude is different from the kind of character JP is talking about, I think.

I think many athletes find it hard to keep their on-field/ice character off the field/ice (Sean Avery is one of the few hockey examples I can think of). And since football has/uses more of these “characters” it stands to reason that it is harder to avoid them especially when these “characters” are stars and play for teams that have been successful.

Even hockey enforcers would probably blush at stomping on a helmetless opponent’s heads with cleats for no apparent reason. Well, except for Chris Simon.

David Hale, huh?
Wonder if Jurcina would like playing in the sun.

I wonder what would happen if we replaced Jurcina with Kronwall.

The System
One thing that bothers me a bit about Ted’s 10 rules for rebuilding: he says, and I know GMGM has stressed it in the past, that one of the most important things is “the system.” Hershey plays the same system as the Caps, players are brought up in the system from the beginning, they draft the best players for the system, etc.
But it doesn’t seem like this could really have been part of The Plan from the beginning. After all, Hanlon’s system was totally different from Boudreau’s. At least some of their success last year was attributed to the fact that a lot of the young guys were already familiar with Boudreau’s system from Hershey.
So, to be charitable, I guess it could be something that they’ve realized since hiring Boudreau, that it’s helpful to have a consistent system organization-wide. Still, it seems (to me) like they kind of act like it was part of The Plan from the beginning.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m totally down with The Plan, and I think GMGM and Ted are doing a great job, and this is admittedly kind of a stupid point. It just makes me realize that they are still making it up as they go, just a little.

I would bet that both GMGM and Ted would happily admit that they are learning as they are going. After all, neither of them has a Cup at this point.

That’s definitely a fair point.
