What do you think of Wes Johnson yelling at you?
One of the things I dislike about going to Verizon Center is being yelled at by public address announcer Wes Johnson.
On Sunday he exhorted me to "show NBC" how we "rock the red." He did this over and over again. Washington, DC isn't Tulsa. We live in the capital of the free world, we sell out our hockey rink for every game, and every hockey-aware outlet in North America has written about what awesome fans the Caps have. I don't need to show NBC anything, Wes. I don't ever need to be told when to cheer. For the love of (Red) Jesus, I don't see what good cheering during a TV timeout does anyway. I will cheer when I want, such as when the Caps clear the puck on the PK, etc.
So Wes: Hush.

For the most part, I think Wes Johnson does a great job and has a great voice…but I have to agree with you a bit. They do a great job at providing us fans with a great experience at the Booth, but as someone who is there regularly, it does border on overkill quite a bit.
I’m also done with the whole “Rock the Red” campaign. I thought it worked great for the playoffs last year, but it shouldn’t have been carried over to this year, IMO. It seems kinda silly, for instance, when we play a team like the RED Wings.
Again, just my opinion—I’m overall very pleased with the product the Capitals are selling right now.

Rock the Red is getting old
(But not nearly as old as the opening “Rock Concert” video. Anyone else notice they edited out Semin’s cameo shot on guitar?….probably because it was a bit, um… omo-hay looking)
We need something new for the Playoffs. Wes gets a bit loud, but what I don’t get is the CONSTANT calls to “Get on your feet!”. Dude… look around. No one is going to stand the whole game. At most some people stand while he is yelling and then sit as soon as the puck drops. I fail to see the point.
We’re paying through the teeth for these seats. Outside of penalty shots or the last minute or so of a one-goal game or something we plan on sitting in them.
Am I missing something? Do they stand for 10 minutes of game time at a stretch in Detroit or Montreal or something? I’ve never seen this. Why are we asking people to do this in DC?

I hadn’t noticed that RE: Semin (I agree though), but I too feel the “Rock Concert” video opening is getting old. I kinda wish they had a variety of “opening themes” so they didn’t have to run the same show night in/night out…but what can you do?
At this point, I wouldn’t suggest they change anything though just because I feel superstitious about things like that, and the season IS going pretty well so far…

Other teams DO have multiple themes
I went to Philly in December (yeah.. the 7-1 game and there was my wife and I in the lower bowl sitting in BRIGHT WHITE Ovechkin Jerseys. Fun times, lemme tell ya! ….#$%-ing Flyers fans….) ANYWAY…I went to Philly and they had a special “Winter Themed Video”. It had digitially added snow falling during the game clips and the screen “frosted over” during transitions from one segment to the another. It wasn’t a loud rock song which I’m sure they typically use, but was more dramatic instrumental stuff.
This was December 20th, so maybe this was their home game closest to Xmas but the video was decent and I thought it very cool that the Flyer organization just mixed it up and threw something new up there for the fans.
Also, I remember watching a YouTube clip from opening day (this year? last year? Not sure…) from San Jose and they had a VERY COOL video that started with the Jaws Shark Music while all the lights were off and the stadium was pitch black and ended with “The Road to the Stanley Cup starts RIGHT NOW!!!”
Here's that Flyers Holiday Vid
They’ve done a similar one in past years

I actually have noticed the Stars fans standing for long portions of games before, not sure what that is about.
As for Wes, I don’t have a dog in this fight since I’m not a STH and only go to games when I’m in DC visiting family (though that may change in the playoffs…), but I think it’s kind of a necessary evil. Wes may be a particularly loud/exuberant PA announcer – that’s his style – but he does seem pretty effective.
Of course, I’m still getting used to this idea that the crowd at VC no longer needs external stimulation to get loud and awesome.
I guess I’m in the minority (well, maybe not, considering it won a national award for sports video production, anyhoo…), but I actually like the rock concert video.

I don’t like being told how to be a fan. I don’t like being told when to get excited. And I don’t like being yelled at.
There was a time, perhaps, that some of it was needed, but I think that time has passed and the atmosphere would be even more impressive if you simply let enthusiasm beget enthusiasm rather than manufacturing it.
That said, the place is loud as hell and creates a real home arena advantage (notice how hesitant I am to say “home ice advantage”), so it’s hard to argue with what they’ve got goin’.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
artificial noise
i hate to be the guy quoting a bill simmons column, but i couldn’t help myself in this instance.
the following is from his ESPN.com column re: choosing a favorite english premier league soccer team (he correctly chose tottenham, but then dropped us without ever writing another word about the EPL):
Not to pull a Madonna on you, but European soccer stands out because of the superhuman energy of its fans — the chants and songs, the nonstop cheering, the utter jubilation whenever anything good happens, how the games seem to double as life-or-death experiences — and I can’t help but wonder if that same trait has been sucked out of our own sports for reasons beyond our control. And no, that same energy hasn’t completely disappeared; you can see a similar energy on display at Fenway, Yankee Stadium, Lambeau, MSG (if the Knicks and/or Rangers are good, a big “if” these days) and any other city with enough history and passion to override the evils of the Jumbotron Era. Still, these are aberrations. By pricing out most of the common fans and overwhelming the ones who remained, professional sports leagues in this country made a conscious decision: We’d rather hear artificially created noise than genuine noise. That’s the biggest problem with sports in America right now. And there’s no real way to solve it.
i agree that the caps fan base has moved past obnoxious artifical excitement. i don’t mind wes johnson in small doses (his scoring summaries are great), but like tyler said…no need to keep screaming at us during commercial breaks! hey ted, let’s tone it down a little and show the rest of the league just how much of a phenomenon the capitals have become.

One thing, I think, that gives these EPL teams such a big advantage in crowd noise is that various fan clubs and such all sit together, so the more enthusiastic ones are all grouped together, much like the student sections at college games.
I think the Caps could take a page out of DC United’s book with how they handle Barra Brava and the Screaming Eagles and such…maybe designate a few sections in both the 100 and 400 levels to be the “loud” sections for the game. I, for one, would gladly stand and yell/sing/what-have-you for the entire game, and I guarantee there are others that would do the same.

Sad but true, a lot of fans in the stadium now are either new or fairweather. I don’t mind Wes helping them out. However, I do understand how a nationally covered game on NBC would warrant Ted wanting loud and crazy for the telecast. I don’t know if it’s so much being yelled at as it is how Wes speaks, but I wouldn’t trade him for any announcer in the world. Besides, it gives me chills knowing that when I play Oblivion and I’m fighting in the arena, he’ll be there.
How the HELL does Shaone Morrisonn keep getting a sweater?
I like cheering during the TV Timeout breaks for:
A. An upcoming powerplay
B. The Victory video
C. The unleash the fury video
All the other times I feel like Wes is yelling at me but I don’t really care. The whole “let’s rip the m’fer roof off this place beee-yayaaaaa” Howard Dean thing gets a little old though.
I also REALLY miss the opening video from last year. The Pretender video was awesome and that song got me pumped up for the games. This new song isn’t that good.
Anything beats the Mission Impossible video though. Jesus, what a terrible song to play for your fans and team before starting a game. Not to mention having the Ted cameo where he unleashes a briefcase from a fat pocket.
last year’s Foo Fighters opener still gives me goosebumps when i watch it on you tube. Everytime I hear it on the radio, I mimic Steve Kolbe’s “Mike GREEEEEEEeeen” call.

I forgot about that…I DO miss that one.

I’ll never forget. Each time I think about last seasons run and the playoffs I start thinking of “the pretender” and epileptic inducing highlight reels.
There were a couple of really good ones. The one they played after the Florida game to that Bravery (i think) song “give me something to believe” was pretty great as well. The one where they listed all the individual accomplishments of the players.
And there was something done at the beginning of this season too, but I can’t for the life of me remember what song it was. Maybe something by (and I shudder to say this) Matchbox 20?
Wes has a great voice. Sure making us “yell” when the cameras are off is a bit silly, but he’s also a damn good events announcer. I love when he goes nuts after the “Unleash the Fury” video or the way he announces our players names after goals. It’s not a matter of toning it down, but choosing the right moments to turn it up.
by CapitalsKremlin on Feb 25, 2009 2:43 PM EST reply actions
Wes has a good voice and is a goodgame announcer but by home game #30, it gets really annoying to constantly be yelled at to cheer fo the Caps. I’m actually glad that Michelle is doing the games, like the Verizon Cell Phone Shuffle, so that it is not only hearing Wes this year. I like this year’s opening videos and don’t mind seeing the same ones over again this year, but I miss the Foo Fighters song. I also liked it better last season when they picked the most appropriate video (Inches, Victory, or Unleash the Fury) for that game’s situation and didn’t do Unleash the Fury followed by Wes screaming at us at just about every single game. You know that you have seen Unleash the Fury video way too many time when you can quote all of the dialogue.
I know I’m a chick and probably shouldn’t feel this way, but I can’t stand watching sports interviews conducted by women or female announcers. (Michelle irritates me.) The interviews are usually crap as they ask questions that sound like they were thought up by a four year old, and the interactions they have during the games are so fake to me. Wearing pink to a sports event (other than on breast cancer awareness day) looks ridiculous to me. I am also not a fan of female fans getting jerseys and shirts that are fem colors rather than the team colors (again with the pink and pastels).
I would much rather listen to Wes yelling at me than chicks asking stupid questions and acting fake. But that’s just me. :)
"For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction.
Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion; that it may sing; " - The Prophet
Oh, I think you should feel that way (and, as a man, I agree). There are few examples of institutional sexism so strong as the female sideline reporter (most of the time, that’s not to say they’re all there for eye-candy or that women shouldn’t be sports reporters – they should).
As for the pink jerseys and such, yeah, those things are a disgrace unless charity is involved.
As someone who doesn’t go to a ton of Caps games (but I’ve been to at least 30 during the Wes era), I gotta say this guy annoys the crap out of me.
And I actually do have to disagree a little about the Caps fans not needing any inspiration to be loud. Caps fans definitely can get crazy loud, especially with that unleash the fury nonsense, but the baseline volume in the Verizon Center can be deafeningly quiet. There was a time in the Flyers game (while the Caps were leading) where there was a stoppage in play during a power play in a close game, and you coulda heard a pin drop. Wes gets on the mic and screams something about the Caps being on a power play, and the crowd responded. But before that there was nothing. In other arenas I’ve been to (Philadelphia obviously, and Montreal and San Jose too)
The Caps crowd seems to operate on a call and response basis more than any other crowd I’ve seen, with the airhorn guy and Wes and Slapshot banging stuff together and the “Goat” (Jesus did that guy look embarrassed by the interview). It would be an interesting experiment to take these four away and see how the crowd was.

Did you hear how sarcastic he was last night when he said, “Time of the power play goal…” after the Ovie penalty (that followed the obvious non-call)? I found it amusing.
