His Best
This one’s better than the goal in Glendale. The behind-the-back self pass and the fact that it’s at home, so you get the goal horn and the fan reaction, make it #1.
What a privilege to see such talent and drive in our own barn.
not for me
it’s hard for me to differentiate this goal from the play against buffalo earlier this year. replace the sweet wall pass with a sweet deke between two players…he falls down on both…on one he’s fending off a player as he shoots, on the other, he has to carry the puck all the way from his defensive zone…
very good goals (i’ll stand by top-5), but nothing beats scoring from his back in arizona. he could replicate this one; he’ll never be able to replicate that beauty.

The pass and spin move is a very underrated part of this goal. Heck, it’s not even really in most of the replays.

A spin move itself is underrated, what Ovi did on this goal a REVERSE spin more — he went against the grain – and that is just pure bad ASS. People can’t do that on 2 feet let alone skates.
That’s why I think this is his baddest goal of all time.

no disagreement that the spin-move, self-pass is the really astounding part of the goal.
for what it’s worth, ovechkin described the goal as “top 10,” and reiterated that the arizona goal was his favorite.

Yes. The reverse spin is usually reserved for running backs and wide outs playing on turf or with 1-inch spikes on.

my favorite part of the sportscenter highlight package

Pretty soon, these goals won’t impress us anymore because have done this “fall down, score” trick so many times.

I wasn’t in Phoenix back in ‘06…but I was in the Verizon Center tonight. The minute we saw it, we knew we had just seen something AMAZING—I didn’t even need a replay (but I’m glad they showed us quite a few)!
Ovechkin obviously just lives for this stuff too—I don’t know they showed this on TV, but in the first stopage afterwards (after yet another in-house replay), they cut to Ovie sitting on the bench and when he sees himself on the jumbotron, he gives everyone the ‘ol "I can’t hear you!" hand to the ear gesture. Everyone went flat-out nuts.
Overall, this was a bit of a sloppy effort by the home team, but I’m really glad the managed to pull out a victory on a night which will live on in highlight reels for quite some time.

We are so lucky to get to watch Ovechkin night in, night out.

When AO scored “The Goal,” the WaPo ran the graphic below. Hopefully they’ll do one for “The Sequel.”
