All about the bucks, no? Pitt re-upped with MT for three years after last year’s Cup run, so they’re on the hook for that contract, whether he’s there or not, so they tried their darndest to let him and the team make it work (dollars are also the reason Bylsma’s there and not a higher-profile guy, in part).
From an on-ice perspective, yeah – the move comes way late. But it’s understandable, given the other concerns.

I went to the Penguins-Leafs game on Saturday and I have one thing to say. Crosby sucks defensively. First he makes a high risk pass to give the Leafs an oddman rush (not that bad as all talented offensive players make high risk passes) but then he demonstrates the worst backchecking. It’s too early to write teams off, but I don’t see this Pens team making it. They’re in a dogfight now with teams that seems to be in better shape (Florida, Buffalo, even Carolina) and have all sorts of issues. Unless the Rags or Habs fall all the way out, it’s hard to see them getting in right now.
