Not to pile on, but...

Pucksnbooks asks (rhetorically), "Why is it that in the third periods of tight hockey games, when the Caps take a penalty, you can always count on Shaone Morrisonn to add to the short-handed woes and make sure that a 5-on-3 kill is thrown in for good measure? Seemingly every time. It's as if he's genetically coded to take penalties at the worst time." Fact: no defenseman in hockey (minimum 30 games played) has taken more penalties per 60 minutes of 4-on-5 time than Mo has. That's gotta be pretty close to the very definition of "tak[ing] penalties at the worst time," no?

That is also the definition of ‘time to play the big Swede,’ time. Scratch-for-Mo, please.

My thought’s exactly.

Or the big Ersky (if Gabby doesn’t feel Kronwall is ready).

Bottom line: Mo needs to sit. Now.

Kronwall’s paperwork is done, he’s ready sez TEB.

Yes, but contractually ready and strategically ready are two different things.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m eager to see what he’s got. I’m more eager, however, to see Mo sit one out.

And that behindthenet stat to which I linked isn’t even updated through last night’s game. D’oh!

$1.9m is more than enough of price for that, Mo.

Hey Hey, Ho Ho,

the $2 million Mo has got to go!

by wittcap79 on Feb 12, 2009 2:23 PM EST reply actions

When he took that penalty last night, I said out loud “Mo, I hope you’re staring your career in the face right now.”
With so many “bubble” D on this team right now, he is killing himself.
Maybe a change of scenery would do everyone good (and by everyone, I mean the Caps).

If I were...

an accountant I would say that in the very basic formula of A = L + SE I would say that Mo is neither an Asset nor is he Stockholder’s Equity.

And 7 months later I still can’t believe he actually won his arbitration hearing.

The good news is if he keeps sucking maybe we can bring him back for ‘Erskine’ money. LOL.

Let’s not let Poti off the hook either. From what I saw that was the third straight sub-par game. Oh, and nice diving call. I guess the ice at MSG was bad and you weren’t embellishing.

that is funny, and true, sir.

I’ve got 20 that says it’s the first dive called on Poti in his career…sorry, but that was a BS, home-team whistle.

by bigonetimer on Feb 12, 2009 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

the only way he could have embelished it more was if he threw his stick and gloves in the air. It could have been left alone (It did take him out of the play in his own defensive zone) but it was a silly ploy to get a PP by him.

Another question is why does Boudreau continue to put Morrisonn out there in those situations? Agree, that he’s ‘earned’ a ‘rest’. Unfortunatly that won’t help his trade value.

Man all those 2001 first round draft picks who we traded for have worked out, huh?

(Sorry Stecks… I’m just kidding with you)

Jebus!

I just saw that Huet was a 2001 draft pick (although not a first rounder)…. I wonder how much Spezza would cost us to round out the wonderful 2001 draft for the Caps.

My Fault

Sorry, my fault we lost last night. I turned the game on to start the second period and watch NY score three goals. I missed Green’s 2nd goal because I thought shoveling snow was better than watching the game at that point. Caps 3-1 when I wasn’t watching, 1-3 when I was.

While shoveling snow, I was muttering to myself about Poti and the Naslund goal. The more I thought about it, the more I wondered why Poti felt the need to play Dawes coming down the wing when Mo was already there. Does Poti not trust Mo to ride Dawes to the boards? I have to wonder if part of the reason for the goal is that Mo’s own teammates don’t trust him to do his job?

by I'm not Brian on Feb 12, 2009 4:15 PM EST reply actions

Poti actually did worse than playing the wrong man, he didn’t play any man. He didn’t take the pass away from Dawes, and he didn’t take Naslund stick out of play. Mo blew his assignment as well which could be part of the reason Poti balked.

That sequence could be taped and shown to defensemen in a camp on how not to play a 2 on 2…

by Sct112 on Feb 12, 2009 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Steckel also stunk on the play as he was beside Naslund at the blue line and let him go. Now, he let Nasland go because he assumed Poti was going to be responsible for him and Stecks would then cover the third man (as a forward should). I only raise this because Steckel had issues during the game as he turned the puck over on the second goal and was part of “confusions” on two others goals (Nasland and Mara).

Ovechkin’s one of the highest-ranked forwards in the league in this stats, too.

by James Mirtle on Feb 12, 2009 6:37 PM EST reply actions

Yes, but considering that Ovechkin gets 1:13 of SH TOI/G (and hasn’t gotten any for a while) and Mo gets 2:56 per game, it’s obviously not nearly as problematic.

(Though the stat is also part of why he’s not killing penalties any more)

At this point, I would trade Morrisonn for a stick and a thank you.

Seriously.

Football's boring. Get over it.

Whoops :)

Well, guess what.

Per Tarik, Alzner gets the scratch tonight, not Mo.

Cue banging head into wall, NOW.
