It’s really all about what you bring. If you’re just over there to troll and for general douchery, then you probably shouldn’t be over there, no. If you’re going to have a reasoned discussion with another fanbase with a fresh perspective, there’s no harm (and probably some good) to be had exchanging viewpoints.

I disagree with that … I post on other boards all the time … some good people out there, just cause they are cheering on the wrong team doesn’t make them the enemy … :)

This. So this. There are other blogs out there that fall into group think and all the good content goes away and all dissenting opinions are shouted down. We’re all human, we’re not immune to this and encouraging other viewpoints is one of the best ways to combat this.

The more outside viewpoints (so long as they’re well reasoned) we can get, the better.

While I generally don’t think it matters that much whether Carcillo watches from the bench or the press box, I’m not sure his early (sucker) punch really warrants 4 games – both players were lining up to fight. The 9-minute PP already removed any chance of the Flyers winning last night’s game – one ensured team loss seems like more of a punishment than 4 games in the press box anyhow.

by Hystricine on Dec 6, 2009 2:54 PM EST reply actions

his history comes into play… and it was a dirty series of events. he cross checked brads, then sucker punched him. i think four is fair.

by Bongos on Dec 6, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

I think the 4 games happened because Brads got injured. Anyone know how he is doing?

But really the major should have taken care of it, maybe 2. 4 seems a bit excessive, but might be a nice present for the coach. Who wants that player the next game? Damn that was a dumb penalty to get. If brads gave the flyers a 9 minute powerplay Bruce would have been livid and probably sat him the next game or so.

by Bman21212 on Dec 6, 2009 3:00 PM EST reply actions

According to Bruce, he seems okay and will ride the bike today. If he passes that test he should play Monday.

I think it’s partly because Carcillo is not a first-time offender, and like others here, I have to think that the suspension is a mercy to Laviolette more than anything else.

“Time for a 4 game winning streak now that Carcillo is gone”

And I’m glad Brads is doing ok. Thankfully he had the super helmet on. Otherwise he might be more messed up

by redlineblue on Dec 6, 2009 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

and judging by the Flyers posts, comments, etc, Carcillo doesn’t have much of a future in the NHL with the new head coach… many are predicating/hoping he’s just cut out-right sooner than later

When he’s not being a moron, Carcillo’s a decent player, sadly. Case in point – Flyers first goal last night.

Wasn’t he a Penguin originally?

Good point, and that’s where any practical injustice might lie. I think this is akin to the Brashear suspension in the playoffs – league throwing the book at a repeat offender who hurt someone maliciously. I think the circumstances are a little more mitigating here, but I suspect Laviolette might be happy to hear this.

by grapejoos on Dec 6, 2009 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

The suspension takes away Laviolette’s opportunity to make an example of Carcillo.
It would have sent a bigger message for the team to sit him than the league.

by Stormblue on Dec 6, 2009 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps, but they can still bench him when he gets back for emphasis, if that’s what they want. I see your point, but I view this as giving Laviolette the luxury to right the ship without Carcillo. I don’t think he’ll be a Flyer much longer.

I think the suspension was 2 games for the punch, 2 games for his lame mustache.

New Caps Scoring Strategy

Goad the lowest IQ/biggest thug on the opposing team.
All you need is a few extra penalties per game, and you will statistically win since the difference between the best and worst teams is only around <1 GPG.

More on PANTHER TARGETS:

 Player PIM Minor Major
1 Bryan Allen 45 10 5
2 Keith Ballard 33 14 1
3 Michael Frolik 33 8 1
4 Mike Duco 31 3 1
5 Kenndal McArdle 29 2 5

maybe Varly will take one to the mask for the team.

by Vinn on Dec 6, 2009 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

by gotsparkly on Dec 6, 2009 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

(This is DMG bait…)

I think part of the reason the suspension is so long is that Bradley was hurt pretty badly. And I think that’s good. Because I think injuries and the results of hits ought to be taken into account when deciding on a suspension.

The reason I think this is that the physical result of the hit often gives insight into the state of mind of the aggressor. There are certain hits that cannot but cause an injury, including a punch to the face when the victim is not yet ready, or an intentional slew foot, or an intentional knee on knee. Kronwall’s extensive injury is evidence of how much Laraque put behind his knee-on-knee trip. David Booth’s concussion is evidence of just how hard Richards hit him. Meanwhile, Peverley, Kaleta, and Gleason were all fine. If Ovechkin had really intended to slew-foot Peverly, or to smash Kaleta into the boards, or to wreck Gleason’s knee, then those guys would not have gotten up.

To be clear, I’m 100% of the opinion that only intentions matter when assessing a suspension. Did the aggressor intend harm? Did he just not care about the other player’s welfare? Carcillo certainly intended to hit Bradley when Bradley’s guard was down, but how hard did Carcillo intend to hit him? Well, Bradley went straight down, and didn’t get up without help. That’s pretty good evidence that Carcillo intended to harm him. And because that was Carcillo’s intent was to harm, the full suspension is justified.

Let me be clear on what I’m not saying — I’m not saying that injuries should be the only factor. After all, sometimes folks get very lucky or very unlucky. But neither should injuries be ignored. Everything should be looked at. Video evidence is not foolproof. If David Booth had gotten up and skated away, that would have been reason to believe that Richards pulled up a bit, even if we couldn’t see it on film. The fact that Booth is still out gives us a good insight on what exactly Richards was trying to do — he was trying to hit Booth’s head as hard as he could. Injuries are just one more piece of the puzzle.

by Gould Old Days on Dec 6, 2009 7:54 PM EST reply actions

aw, c'mon.

Boiled to the point of absurdity (internet!), one could conclude more leeway to cheapshot those who can better take a punch. If Betts has a harder head, is Brash’s hit cleaner? How come four minutes to high-stick Brads—“skin like paper”—and two to do the same to Fehr, who’s either made of leather or bleeds clear fluid?
Of course, I think a real cheap shot—Simon/Bertuzzi stuff—should cost you ‘ten games more than the guy you mugged’, however long that may be. So my whole post is more mute than smake.

What about that fact that it was clearly a sucker punch?

Is there no honor in hockey fights anymore? I think a good bit of the suspension is based on the fact that Carcillo coldcocked Brads before the gloves were off. It’s one thing to goad a player into fighting, it’s another to so clearly cheapshot him.

As far as I’m concerned Carcillo will never be anything more than a siss little b*tch because hedidn’t give Brads a chance to swing.

Carcillo is definitely a tough, tough man. And with that fact – I think players like that SHOULD be held to a different standard in regards to plays like this. Carcillo’s been around the block before with the rough stuff, guys like him need to know when and when not to do it – since that’s really all carcillo is good for..

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
