Sunday Caps Clips: Five In a Row
Your savory breakfast links:
- Recaps and other assorted musings on last night's cakewalk (déjà vu) from Corey (blog, article), Tarik (blog, article), Vogs, Joe B., Ed Frankovic, Peerless, Puck Daddy (where five points isn't star-worthy), OFB and Fight For Old DC.
- The Top Ten reasons Dan Carcillo sucker-punched Matt Bradley last night. [Peerless]
- "The Caps and [Alexander Semin's] agent, Mark Gandler, haven't held talks since the eve of the season, when it's believed an offer from the team was rejected. The RFA-to-be is also generating much interest in his native Russia, but the Caps will give this another go before the season is out." [ESPN]
- Speaking of contract negotiations, George McPhee is Puck Daddy's eighth-best general manager of the decade. A strong argument could be made that he he should be higher (of course, then there's Michael Nylander). [Puck Daddy]
- Great Varly shot. [TTT Hockey]
- Welcome back to the organization (and the Caps' AAAA affiliate), Chris Bourque. [Patriot-News]
- A look at the Caps' ECHL prospects. [Hockey's Future]
- And speaking of kids, a look at the Caps' World Juniors participants. [OFB]
- Per the HHoF, on this date back in 1987, "Washington's Scott Stevens set a club record with five assists as the Capitals won 10-3 over the visiting Los Angeles Kings."
- Finally, happy 48th birthday to Chris Valentine.

Aside from the giftie from Carcillo, jumping right on their back with a goal in the first minute was just a fantastic start for the boys. Bruce brought ’em out ready to play and Theo did what he had to do in the first minutes.
Oh, and Perreault’s end to end dash 1 on 4 and missing that backhand by this much was only topped by spinning Pronger like a top in the corner and walking around him. Player!

But remember, there’s too much passing on the power play.

7-for-18 in the last two games (38.9%) will do that.
I’m betting the Caps drop two spots in the weekly rankings over at ESPN. The Penguins will occupy each of the top three slots.

Nah, the Pens’ll drop to each of 1-5 since Crosby went down

I actually did the unmentionable and ventured into some of Puck Daddy’s comments, and the few Flyers fan comments I read seemed to echo what we have been saying here. Basically they all think Carcillo is a tool. Sensible Flyers fans posting on PD? What is this world coming to?
You have to go through the photos in the related gallery to see the Laviolette’s many faces of dismay.
I could have been equipment manager, but nooooo!
Look at the ugly mug on Carcillo. He looks like a serial killer.
I could have been equipment manager, but nooooo!
He reminds me of Joakim Noah and that is not a good thing.
Looking at that pic makes me want to sucker punch him.
Carcillo looks like one of those slow-motion captures of boxers getting punched in the face.

I think Carcillo is happy Laviolette can’t make him eat an F’in porcupine without an F’in porcupine itself.

Also, game replaying on Center Ice at 11:00am. Perfect for brunch!

Been thinking about Laviolette. On the one hand, of course, he was probably hoping for a good win and something the Flyers could build on. On the other hand, if they were doomed to lose, Laviolette is probably not too displeased with how things went. He’ll have their attention during today’s practice — that’s for sure. They’ll all have had a night to stew over the loss, and they’ll be waiting for the ax to drop, wondering if they’ll be faced with Herbies, or worse. Wondering the fate of their compatriot Carcillo. Wondering their own fates.
And Laviolette has plenty to work with for what every new midseason coach has to preach – "You have more talent than this, but you have to harness it better and play with better discipline." He’ll have plenty to work with in making them believe that they have sinned in October and November, but they can REPENT and reach the promised land if they just apply what they tell him. No, Laviolette is probably not too displeased with the opportunity the Caps gave him, the door the Flyers themselves opened for him to come in and make change. I’m very interested to hear what he does with it.

Had the same thought.
Philly won’t be down for long, not given the talent level they’ve got. They just got caught last night playing bits of two totally incompatible systems, had a couple of bad goals, a couple of flukey goals, and it all went haywire.
They’re going to need Emery to rebound, run with Boucher, or get another goalie at the trade deadline; but the chances of this team missing the playoffs are real small.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
The ulimate jinx, I know, but . . .
If the Caps win on Monday, we’re on top of the whole league in the point standings . . .
Puck Daddy (where five points isn’t star-worthy)
because Leahy wrote it, and Leahy would rather eat a fucking porcupine than hand out a star to a Capital.

Dammit, if Backstrom had only made one more pass last night, instead of scoring that goal. Selfish, Nick, selfish.

Who doesn’t think Nicky will tie that at some point (or break it) ?
by red army line on Dec 6, 2009 11:10 AM EST up reply actions
Mike Ridley actually broke the record on 1/7/89 when he assisted on all six goals in a 6-3 over the ’Hawks. My money is on Nicky tying that some day.

Good win last night guys, Im stationed at Andrews Air Force Base so I tend to watch most of the Caps games, I also write for dailyfaceoff.com for the Caps. Anyways Im a pens fan (obviously by my pic) but I absolutely loved the game last night of course. Watching the flyers get their balls handed to them on a platter is always nice.
What I really came here to say is that you can have Bourque back, my god he was pretty horrible for the Pens and I can see why you guys waived him i the first place.
But good win yesterday.
I rather suspect Wilkes-Barre Scranton would disagree, and would have loved to have him (and to keep him from Hersey)…

Theres no doubt that WIlkes Barre could have used him, but there was no way Bourque deserved a roster spot on the parent club. He does very well in the AHL, theres nothing wrong with being a career AHL player, better than my career choice eh?
Agreed. And you might rather be playing hockey than doing what you do, but we’re all appreciative you’re there.

The Caps record without Ovechkin just highlights how much of a selfish player he is when he’s actually on the ice. ;)
I was at the game in the Caps Road Crew suite. The glares coming from the Flyers fans — from as far away as center ice — were priceless. (Although the Flyers fans that were around the suite (and IN the suite) were pretty cool.) Also priceless: Flash and Green going on the Flyers home ice for the three stars announcemnt.
Also, knowing how Bradley is, I think he would trade “knock the funked out” for three Caps goals any time.
what impressed me was that Phillys first line was something like a -6 I think I read…always good to see Richards looks like a tool
philly is in some trouble right now. Many had them winning the East and Pronger as MVP, but it’s pretty hard to win MVP if your team can’t make the playoffs. Hopefully they don’t have a turn around like the pens did last year

I don’t think Philly’s going to be bad for good, alas. Don’t know how far a team can go with that headcase in goal, but there’s no such thing as a 9-minute PP in March, and Laviolette’s done more with less talent than the goons have on tap…
theyll definately turn it around, but ill echo what you said, Emery is not the answer for them, he will not lead them to a SCF.
Holtby and Nylander and Morrisonn for Pronger should balance out the cap stuff, no?
by red army line on Dec 6, 2009 1:19 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think they would do it but Anaheim’s Niedermayer is a possibility. However you can leave Nylander out and hope he gets loaned
Yeah, and I just don’t get that. It isn’t THAT hard to ask permission to use the characters before putting them on the mask, and it’s free advertisement for Hershey products. Why on earth would Hershey make him change it?
FĐŻEE ALEX NOW!
Maybe it wasn’t the company, but the league that made him change it…is it possible they have a rule against anything that could be construed as advertising on equipment (beyond the equipment manufacturer itself)?
Steve Valiquette has a Spider-Man mask — to me it’s the same concept. It’s such an iconic image that it’s hard to think of it as advertising in the same way that we would if there were, say, the golden arches on a goalie mask.
That said, I have no idea whether or not the league did actually make him change it as you speculate, just saying that I would disagree if that were the case (and obviously assuming Holtby wasn’t getting paid for the placement).

Corey sez: Bruce Boudreau said Matt Bradley appears to be fine today. He will ride the bike and if all is well will play tomorrow.
I definitely chose Phish over the going up to Philly last night due to last year’s trip where they were trounced 7-1….the show was amazing, but had I known it was going to be this kinda game I prolly woulda chose different.
Maybe you not going is the reason. It’s as good a theory as any, especially if you enjoyed the show.

If ever there were someone that needed to have themselves a serving of fresh Porcupine, it’s Milbury (and McGuire).

I think the Atlantic is best I would rather play Atlanta or Tampa over any team in the Atlantic, except Islanders, in the playoffs
Don’t sleep on Atlanta. They’ve looked really sharp in their non-Caps game this year.

I would rather play Atlanta or Tampa in the playoffs over any non-NYI Atlantic team as well, but that’s just because NYR and PHI have the capability to steal a playoff series — the Rangers with Lundqvist and the Flyers because classical Flyers thuggery may end up working in the playoffs, as we’ve seen in the past. I still think Atlanta and Tampa are better teams.

for the record, tedious tasks (aka grading) are SO much more fun with a replay of last night’s game on :)

That we have a first round and a second round draft pick in our ECHL review?

And neither of them is the best prospect there.

I need some advice on sports bars
Anyone on the Maryland half of the Beltway have a favorite place to watch Caps games? I live in Alexandria, so if I venture out for a game it’s either Bugsy’s or one of the bars in Ballston.
"Camaraderie, that's what the Washington Capitals are all about."
Dogfish in Gaithersburg is my favored haunt, but it’s not a sports bar, per se. They do have a couple of sweet TVs, though. They’re also pretty accommodating about changing to the programming you want to see at the bar.

It might be worth to check out one of the places at National Harbor as well. I haven’t been there to watch a Caps game, but I know that a couple of restaurants/bars look like they have good TV setups. The National Pastime sports bar at the Gaylord is awesome, and Public House is cool too. Easy drive on 495 over the bridge, if you haven’t been there yet….
