Ovechkin's Career Penalties
I am like many Caps fans when I find that people think Alex Ovechkin is dirty an absurd notion. I have compiled his career penalties and penalty minutes, season by season and an aggregate, so people may see just how "dirty" he is. In a grand total of 366 NHL games, including the playoffs, Ovechkin has "amassed" 268 penalty minutes (109 minor penalties, four majors, three game misconducts). The breakdown is below. For the sake of simplicity, I have alphabetized the penalties.
Take a look at all of his "dirty penalties." His whopping 5 boarding penalties and 2 kneeing penalties, including the ones he got suspended for.

Great job compiling this. Rec’d for considerable effort.
The game misconduct penalties are somewhat revealing to me. If we looked at this list two weeks ago, he would have had one misconduct during his four-and-change year career, and that one dates back to 06-07.
This is a classic example of a few bad and borderline examples swaying opinions just because they are high profile.

I see it more as providing examples for the storyline they were already pushing.
They want to call Ovi a dirty player – so they point to these rare occasions.
Last year he was a showboat, celebrating too much.
The opinions were there before the suspension — this just give people supposed justification.

Agreed. Haters are going to see what they want to see.

Totally agreed. And more fighting.
And while I’m on it, less high sticking. He frequently hits with his stick straight in the air and I’d bet that’s how he got some of those. Putting his stick on the ice would make that much less likely.

Rec’d for both the info and the effort.
Of course, this doesn’t include “the obvious penalties he always gets away with that aren’t called.” But it does include b.s. calls (recent ones in Ottawa and against Buffalo come to mind), so I’m cool with “it evens out.”

There’s also all the times he left his feet but never got called for it. It happens all the time, right Kelley?

does anyone have any real examples of him leaving his feet? I have seen this on a few pens sites state this with no real examples and honestly can't remember any but don't see as many games as I would like to.
It’s not something I’ve noticed and every time I see it mentioned it’s never backed up with any evidence. People just say something to the effect of, “Come on. He does it every hit!” I think it’s another example of people seeing what they want to see.

yeah, “every hit” is clearly a gross exaggeration. to my eye, he was supremely guilty a few times his rookie and sophomore seasons, but has toned down the jumping since.
one reason the complaint keeps popping up is because all AO’s most popular youtube vids are from 05-06. the following are all from the same highlight reel. two examples from the same game against NJD (back-to-back on the video, the second a bit more glaring than the first). one from a little later in the vid. and the hit that’s most commonly linked at places like pensburgh/thepensblog, on the road vs. anaheim. finally, one i believe was actually called for charging, against philly.

I agree that he was a much worse offender of leaving his feet in his first two seasons. I’ll also point out that in all of those examples, with the exceptions of the hits against NJ, he was the puck carrier and not the player who initiated contact.

Nice screen name, by the way.

No question that he almost tiptoes on hits, which is classic Ovie being borderline illegal. He also hits slightly upward sometimes, so that after impact he comes off the ice and then lands.
He also seems to take several steps in pursuit of the puck, and when an opposing player takes the puck and passes, Ovie takes the hit on the player, which I could buy as charging.

yeah that's what I thought so basically we have the recent knee/boarding, the list from the wilderness post, anyother borderline situations?
sorry hit post instead of preview before setting up the link from the wild post

Awesome stuff, MP. I love it.
The fighting major he got in ‘06-’07 regular season was weak. It was the game he boarded Briere, and he was immediately jumped by Gaustad. Didn’t even look like Ovi got his gloves off. To me, his only real “fight” was the preseason one with Richards, in which I think he actually didn’t embarrass himself.
I’m with a couple of the comments above…..love Ovechkin roughing minors, wouldn’t mind a fight or two a year.
Yeah, the “fight” where he got jumped and didn’t throw a punch. The refs had to call a fighting major on him or the Caps would have gotten the power play because the Sabres took so many dirty retaliation penalties on the play. They still only ended up with a 1-minute powerplay. Retards.
