While I love the tongue-n-cheek aspect of the “Free Alex” movement I really hope no one is taking it too seriously.
Whether you think he deserved the game misconduct for the knee-to-knee or not, he got it. And if he wasn’t suspended after two ejections so close together the rest of the league and fans would have gone apoplectic.
Now let’s concentrate on the positives. We’re starting a whole new month worth of games tonight, and the Caps have a good chance to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the conference leaders. Let’s hope Semin comes back ready to prove he deserves an extended stay in D.C., Knuble kicks it into high gear when he returns, and the defense finally brings it all together.
Let’s make December the start of our march to history!

Hey that Varlamov kid is pretty good.
He should be the rookie of the month…oh, wait…
Speaking of Varly and snubbage… I was listening to the puck podcast the other day, and they were talking about rookies this year. The host (Eddie) was asking about goalies this year, and who could pull a Varlamov this Spring, but never talked about Varly as a rookie this year. I wonder if that is representative of the mind-share out there; Varly was a rookie last year. Interesting.
There was a lot of hype pre-season about Varly still being Calder-eligible. I doubt anyone who matters thinks otherwise.

Quit hyping Varlamov. Remember he did lose that one regular season game in regulation.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks.
And deserved to lose a second! He’s terrible!

I have an idea. Didn’t the Orioles send out stuff promoting Nolan Reimold to all the rookie of the year voters? Maybe the Caps’ PR department can send out something to the NHL RoY voters.

Epic fail.
delivered to an unsuspecting Patrick Kaletta (running the Buffalo Sabres forward face-first into the glass from behind and picking up a major penalty)
Todd Bertuzzi, another forward who had an advantage in terms of size, skill, power and speed and used it to cripple Colorado’s Steve Moore?
Is that what Marty McSorley heard when he whipped his stick upside the head of Donald Brashear
That are all exaggerations at best; untruths at worst.
Another example of someone who didn’t watch the hit, he just jumps to a conclusion.

Hey, here’s a reason we can’t afford to lose Corey:
Washington, DC: When will Poti be back? Do you think him being out is the main reason the PK has been lousy the past few weeks?
Tarik El-Bashir: Tom could return Saturday, Boudreau said this morning. And yes, his absence has had something to do with the PK’s struggles.
Poti is at his best when the Caps are shorthanded. When he gets the puck down low, you can count on him to get it out. The same cannot be said for some of the Caps’ other D-men, who often blindly try to bank the puck off the glass.

Giroux was being held on that play.
When Giroux first came up I didn’t think much of him, but the more time he spends up with the Caps may just be all he needs. He looks better this game than he did last.

Misleading. He’s been force-fed on the top line. AO and Nick had great games with him. Gir-poo didn’t earn that +5.

thats true, and yes I don’t think he deserves to be on the top line. But how many NHL teams can bring someone up from their farm and put right on their top line and still have success?
I think the Capitals could bring just about anyone else from Hershey and they’d have more success. Giroux’s a great AHLer, but he’s not an NHL player.

bouchard isn’t ready yet…and oskar takes too many penalties unfortunately. We Caps fans would be just as pissed with OO as they are with Gir-poo…
Except that OO can develop. Gir-poo is who he is. He’s not going to get better.
Listen to Ol' Hank Murphy and eat your damn onions.
I agree with you there…but OO does not look even close to the OO from last year, its a shame really because he seemed like a large bodied player that could shoot really well
Interesting. I haven’t watched him at all, this year or last. Only saw him a little in training camp. Didn’t look like his skating and foot speed was where it needed to be yet.
Listen to Ol' Hank Murphy and eat your damn onions.
The thing that bothers me is that he’s trying to turn into a physical player, and growing up in europe he doesn’t background doing that…hence all the penalties
I’ll live with that. He’s going to need to play like that in NA because he doesn’t have the speed and finesse to do it otherwise. Grow that snarl, OO.
Listen to Ol' Hank Murphy and eat your damn onions.
OO adding a penalty or two wouldn’t change the player he’s replacing.

On a related non-joke note, does anyone else think Campbell’s policy of recusing himself is as ass-backwards as his other decisions? I couldn’t care less about the fact that his son plays for Florida if a player on the Panthers (other than his son) is on the receiving end of a suspend-able offense. It shouldn’t cloud his judgment at all. Suspending a player from games involving his son’s team is a MUCH greater conflict of interest.

Im gonna say this: the league needs to define whether they actually want the defending team to control or clear the puck on a delayed penalty, because that was not controlled or cleared. If they want to increase scoring, require actual control rather than merely touching the puck to end a delayed penalty.

Fehr is doing an awesome job staying in front of the net and being a nuisance. It’s nice to finally see players consistently be in front of the goalie.

Good eye, I was just going to say that. He’s also been a hound on puck retrieval, the most underrated PP skill.
Flash has been forcing terrible passes through the middle of the ice. Ugh.
Listen to Ol' Hank Murphy and eat your damn onions.
I was just about to say that (about Flash). He’s been fumbling the puck and making bad passes. Not good.
Fehr is skating well, and moving the puck well. But the best thing, as you noted, is his forecheck. He’s not hesitating to go into the dirty spots and pull the puck out to make plays. He’s also had a few nice passes. He’s playing the exact type of game he needs to be successful.

No way do I want Semin for 6. He’s injury-prone and inconsistent. For 6 you need to be getting elite production or very near it. I’d trade 28 for Kane or Toews in a heartbeat. Or Keith. Or Perry. Or Getzlaf. Or a bunch of guys.

4th in the league in points per game is elite level production in my book. He might miss some games but lord everyone is nowadays. Bad Semin has been away for quite awhile now…I’m not sure I would trade him for all the guys you listed. The existing chemistry with the rest of our big guns is only another mark in his favor in my book. He also puts up points in the playoffs.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:22 PM EST up reply actions
So do all the guys that I mentioned. The problem with Bad Semin is that he’s liable to show up at any time and make a stay of indeterminate length. He’s a special talent, but he’s rarely healthy for long stretches.
I have a hard time believing our other guns would have a hard time meshing with any of those guys.

Coming in late…but this game could easily be 7-0 or 8-0. Semin has been very, very good. Backstrom big as well. Flash finally back on the scoresheet. The only negative thing is Steckel didn’t bury his breakaway…besides that this is a flawless performance so far.
Oh wait. I forgot Giroux. Besides one decent drive to the net, he’s looked slow and useless.

Why is Gir-Poo on the PP? He sucks. Put MP out there. Jeezy Petes, BB.

Can’t hold the puck. A step too slow. Not getting to the corners quick enough. Not making good passes. There has got to be a better choice.

He’s been having a good game tonight if you ask me. Has had some good forechecking and has created some good chances. He’s just beyond snake-bit at this point.

best I can remember the top line play all year. would like to see how this line does against teams not from florida
I’d say that about every line but when Backstrom and Semin are playing the puck possession game this well and Laich is going to the net/retrieving anything down low it’s fun to watch. This is again the same line that gave us such a spark in the 2nd half of the Philly series 2 years ago.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions
I was very excited about 21/19/28. Too bad it won’t last.
by Knubles and Bits on Dec 3, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions
Here’s the real truth of the matter…b/c we’ve seen 19’s chemistry with Ovie as well. When Backstrom is on his game/healthy whatever it is…he can make his line extremely dominant. You put him with either Ovie or Semin and you have a line that can take over a game at any time. Finding the right balance will be key. The scary part is you plug in Knuble or Laich as the other winger on either one of those lines and the balance is tremendous.
Couple in Fehr and Flash scoring like they are? It gets scary.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions
I like the balance
And we’ve seen a ton of chemistry between Ovie and Morrison too. Good problems to have no which way I put it.
The difference is Semin needs Backstrom to dominate. And Ovie, well, he’s Ovie.
by Knubles and Bits on Dec 3, 2009 8:21 PM EST up reply actions
This is a good point…Ovie likes to hold the puck a lot more than Semin does…Semin’s one touch passing game works so well with Backstrom b/c Nicky is the only one who can control those passes and continue the play with another great pass. When they are on it’s fun to watch.

question for you, i tried to screencap with the sopcast player, no dice (black screen). Are you using the justin feed?
sopcast. it depends on how your video card is displaying the feed. some graphics cards can write video directly to the screen (that is, bypasses windows and therefore no screen cap). Others (mine must be one) have the ability to let windows (or their own routine maybe) capture the screen. So it depends on the feed (a flash feed like justin.tv) will be captureable. A media player feed (like sopcast) depends on your video card and drivers.
MP looks real good defensively tonight. Hasn’t been as dangerous on offense as we’re used to but he’s really doing well in his own zone.

Lost in all of this…Varly is having another strong game. Hasn’t had to make any 10 bell saves but has made the ones he’s needed to.
I was thinking the same thing. The shots FLA does have are pretty good quality. Especially early before we took over.
Listen to Ol' Hank Murphy and eat your damn onions.
Horton’s definitely had some good chances. (Selfishly I hope if Florida ever scores one, he pots it because I’m playing him tonight, but I’d love for Varly to get the shutout.)
His numbers on the season are starting to hit levels we haven’t seen out of a Caps goalie in a long time. Quietly dominant. The win/loss record is even more ridiculous.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:33 PM EST up reply actions
Seriously I was very happy to see Jose put in a solid, solid effort the other night at Carolina, because I still think we need to split the load a bit more than some other top teams regardless of who our #1 will be going forward for the rest of the year. If Varly takes it over like I hope/think he is, the less minutes we’re forced to play him the better come playoff time. He looks so much more calm and in control lately. Workmanlike.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:36 PM EST up reply actions
And Varly gives off the attitude that “you’re just not scoring on me” and I never see that from Theo. But that might be my bias.
Listen to Ol' Hank Murphy and eat your damn onions.
No…it’s not just you. Even on his good nights I feel like I cringe more every shot when Theo is in. When Varly is in net lately I’m just hoping they clear the front for him and no crazy deflections happen. Nothing else seems able to beat the kid right now outside of a really special shot.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:39 PM EST up reply actions
You’re totally right about crazy deflections. Every time there is a scrum near the net I expect the puck to go in off our D.
Listen to Ol' Hank Murphy and eat your damn onions.
Varly’s had worse luck with that than pretty much anyone. Our D scored a bunch of own goals last year against him.

He should have a few more helpers last few games but switching linemates and just some bad luck has killed that for him. I still haven’t seen the guy have a bad night yet. I love how hard Gordo works when he’s healthy but how you can say we aren’t a better team with MP out there on the 3rd line every night I don’t know.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions
Especially with Backstrom and Semin PKing we don’t need two lines of defensive grinders. When healthy I’d love to see 3 scoring lines and a checking line:
AO/BMo/Knuble
AS/Baxter/Laich
Flash/MP/Fehr
Brads/Steckel/Clark
Who beats that lineup?
Listen to Ol' Hank Murphy and eat your damn onions.
Honestly going forward how do you see D combos looking?
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:43 PM EST up reply actions
I can agree with this…although Mo might be gone after this year. Carlson might need another season. Erskine is also signed beyond this year isn’t he? Leaves him and Sloan as guys to fill in holes.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:46 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah
Damn, forgot about Jurcina. I’d almost pair him with Poti over Schultz actually.
Who am I kidding though, Nyls seems to enjoy the money for nothing.
Almost no one. We’ve talked about how nasty a 3rd scoring line would be with that line you just listed right there. You’ve got 3 scoring lines with a play-making pivot who have no issues being defensively responsible, a skill/sniper winger (AO, Semin, Flash)…and a retriever/go to the net guy that’s a body down low who doesn’t mind getting those dirty goals (Knubs, Laich, Fehr).
That’s as solid as it gets.
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:41 PM EST up reply actions
What would you suggest for defensive pairings F & B?
I lived with a blind guy for a while, then he figured it out and demanded back rent.
Green/Schultz
Poti/Potsy
Alzner/Juice
Not a huge fan of Schultz with Green because I’d like a guy with more mobility there but I don’t think Potsy can do it and I don’t think Alzner is ready for it yet. I could split the Po-Po but Alzner and Juice are such a good tandem I don’t see it happening. Then you’d have Poti/Alzner and Potsy/Juice. That’s probably better as far as the minutes the second pair is going to get (I want Alzner to get more than Potsy) but I think the way I listed it is most likely.
Listen to Ol' Hank Murphy and eat your damn onions.
If Pothier continues to play at this level I love him in the top 6. How much is Erskine getting paid to sit in your config? Also wonder what to do with Sloan or do you carry him as your #13 foward/#8 D?
by Davethecapsfan on Dec 3, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions
Personally I like having the versatility/having a swingman. (It sure worked out well for Toronto with Ian White).
Agreed, but I also like a guy like Laing as the #13 forward. This is ignoring Gordo still being out

Points per game is all well and good, but they have to be in the game to make that stat worthwhile.
