Comcast to take control of NBC Universal
Why should you care? It means the same entity that owns VS now owns the NHL's broadcast TV partner. Comcast will only own 51% of NBC universal but will take control over the operation.

I need help with this one….is this good or bad? I think the current broadcast contract for the NHL is terrible. Does having it all under one roof make it better or worse?
It might be good if Comcast uses it to bundle Versus with MSNBC and the other NBC properties. And maybe NBC can broadcast the NHL every Sunday instead of waiting until after New Years (not sure if that’s really a good thing or not).

I think they wait because they know football will kill them every week until it’s over.

It might also depend on production costs of showing a hockey in comparison to whatever else is being shown.
Doesn’t VS have Monday night hockey games knowing that MNF will beat them?
At minimum VS would likely benefit from the cross promotion during college football games on Saturday and the Sunday Night Football game on NBC.

NBC losing real bad in ratings probably looks worse than VS doing the same.

The point is, they already lose with whatever is already up against football. So it wouldn’t matter if it’s hockey or anything else.

When the rumor first surfaced, someone (Wysh?) postualted it could be good for hockey because the broadcast rights would now be with the same conglomerate. I’m not sold that it will make that much difference, but it sure can’t hurt. I think what matters is that it gives Comcast leverage to get better placement/terms for Versus on cable systems and satellite (DirecTV, anyone? Does anyone even remember that problem is still out there?).

I remember every time I turn to channel 603 and see nothing. I’m going to be a very unhappy camper if this doesn’t get resolved by the playoffs. I

At least Comcast cares a bit about hockey.

I worry that Comcast is going to further use this as leverage with DirectTV. I do think there is a small bit of hope that it could help if the FCC looks at what is currently happening and brings up the issue of video providers also being content providers and how this is becoming a larger issue. If so, Comcast may feel some pressure to resolve things quicker with DirectTV. I’m not counting on this happening though.

I don’t care for this, I think Comcast is a 2nd rate company as evidenced by their extremely poor production value. CSN is a freaking joke, along with those SportsNite no talents. Maybe NBC will give them some of their hand-me-down HD equipment so the CSN-DC broadcasts won’t look so amateur.
And I don’t like that Comcast owns the Flyers and NBC. Doesn’t TV dictate the playoff schedules? Wouldn’t this be a potential conflict of interest?
Russian Machine very rarely breaks.
I hate Comcast because I’m philosophically opposed to any private entity that has worse customer service than the DMV.

+1 for brutal honesty. I also weep for those who use them for an ISP. The disaster stories I hear…

Comcast is a very distributed company, and it really matters where you are. In my area of northern California, we have a pretty good Comcast shop. And it’s very clear that they’re good despite the stupid bureaucracy of “National” and that we’re lucky to have some talented techs. I have no doubt that some regions have terrible Comcast franchises, and there’s just nothing they can do to get any kind of decent service.
