A new look for the lines

Wowie zowie.

Per tarik (but not per Corey (grrrr....))

Looks like Coach Gabby got out the whiteboard on the flight to San Jose.

The Jackets fans were saying that Chimera has pretty good wheels, and Ima guessing 360-degree-ice-vision Backstrom gets to center the beastie 'til they see what they got, or 'til BB gets bored.

Yes. intriguing.

I figured after the stinker against Carolina, BB figured it was time to shake up the lines. The second line’s productivity has been less than stellar, as of late. While the first line was “off”, they had at least done something, even though they were negative on the night.

So, Bruce decided to put Ovi with BMo and Knuble since that combination has worked in the past. Flash & Fehr have also worked well together in the past, with a variety of centers. Lines with Backstrom & Semin have worked well together, with or without Ovi. So, they’re trying Chimera with Nicky and Semin. (Let’s see how the CBS line works.)

In the long run, I think Chimera will go back and forth between the second and the third line, depending on the situation. (We’ll probably see OBS again. While that line will usually be our first line, occasionally they need to be broken up and this is one of those occasions.)

As always with Gabby, the lines will be fluid. If Knubs doesn’t show up tomorrow, he’ll move. If Chimmie doesn’t connect on the second, he’ll move.

I could have been equipment manager, but nooooo!

Both of those things could happen though, and they’d still move.

Familiar Rapports: Bald Pollack, F&B, Gould Old Days.

Lobbies: Osala, Perreault, Erskine, Pothier, Neuvirth, Flash.

Fan of: Mean Lars Backstrom, Line Mashing, Cake.

I was surprised when I saw these lines. Then I was pretty happy with the balance after I thought about it. There is only one problem that I see. With the emergence of Backstrom lately as such an offensive force, he is going to see less ice time on the second line just by the fact that Ovechkin takes such long shifts. There just isn’t enough ice time for everyone.

I suppose that the silver lining might be that with such good balance, and such offensive capability on the second line, maybe BB will actually enforce some rules about shift length and keep Ovechkin on a little bit of a leash. I would actually love to see #8’s time on ice drop a couple of minutes a game, shorter shift lengths, and more energy.

If you read “between the lines” of my (very brief) notes, I think they’re putting the new guy out with the most skilled center deliberately.

AO is on a pretty hot streak and BMo can easily feed pucks to him while Knuble goes up to screen Nabby.

Meanwhile, Backis can find the tape on Chimera’s stick anywhere on the ice. If Good Sasha Emo Bunny decides to play tomorrow, then Jason can go create havoc in the crease. If Sasha Snezhinka shows up and flakes out, Chimmy may actually get to score a goal (or make room for Lars to score.)

Meanwhile the Brooksie brigade can roll and maybe Brads can bleed a little in honor of the Cap’n.

Three potential scoring lines against the San Jose Sharks in the Tank.

Melikes.

Right, keeping 3 scoring lines is key. Also, you put Chimera, who is supposed to aid our team toughness, on a line with two of the guys that need the most protecting. Makes sense to me; Chimera can actually skate with those guys.

In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

Sometimes Ovi might take a long shift but the other members end up getting replaced so Ovi’s with the next shift anyhow. That could happen so we could see Ovi with Nicky and Sasha during a transition between shifts.

Chimera has got to be feeling pretty happy about the trade right about now. Better team, better linemates, and if these lines hold more ice.

Agreed.

I’d still think Chimera is a 3rd liner and Flash is a 2nd liner (from what was originally listed) but there’s always flexibility.

Bruce changes lines more often than he changes ties, so I’m sure we’ll seen any and every combo.

And as you well know, “first liner” and “second liner” distinctions are highly dependent on who else is on your team, quite fluid, and largely meaningless.

Chimmy has also scored on the Sharks in each of his last two games, and putting him with Backstrom gives him that much more of an edge.

Also

Might be fun to see him on a line with Matty Perreault.

Right after the trade, a Sharks fan posted that they were not looking forward to seeing Chimmy since he’s a Sharks killer.

Does Chimmy = Roy Schieder?

perhaps Bruce is thinking

that against San Jose, if he’s gonna match top lines, he’s wants a first line that is more defensively responsible and a second line with a little more scoring. I expect this to change for LA and not just because of Bruce being Bruce about switching lines around

He is a notorious non-matcher of lines, but I can see how the balance of speed, defense and grit on our top two lines in this configuration could give an opponent fits.

First line rolls, AO knocks you around a li’l bit and then scores on you. Second line rolls, chimera knocks you around a li’l bit and Sasha scores on you. Third line rolls, Brooksie wins the faceoff and Green scores on you. Fourth line rolls, Stecks wins the faceoff and Laing and Brads cycle the puck for a while.

Those lines sure did not work. Bruce went to a new combo vs LA which did not work either.

Plea for Bruce: Please restore Eric Fehr to the second line right wing position.
