Caps Acquire Jason Chimera

Per Elliotte Friedman the Capitals have traded Milan Jurcina and Chris Clark to the Columbus Blue Jackets for Jason Chimera.

GP G A P +/- PIM PPG SHG GWG GTG SOG PCT
Jason Chimera 39 8 9 17 -7 47 1 0 1 0 92 8.7

Assets Has blinding speed and good size. Excels at the forechecking game, as well as penalty-killing situations. Can score goals in bunches.
Flaws Lacks consistency on offense, and his all-or-nothing style makes him an injury risk. Doesn't use his size enough to his advantage.

Update: From a financial perspective, the Caps move $4,008,333 in 2009-10 salary and $2,633,333 in 2010-11 salary (all Clark's) and add $1,875,000 in 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 salary.

What They're Saying:

"Good trade for both clubs (CBJ/WAS). Capitals needed someone like Chimera, and Blue Jackets need help at both ends." - David Pagnotta (TheFourthPeriod)

"Just talked to Chris Clark. Said he was "definitely shocked" by the news of the trade. Didn't have any inclination that he might be dealt." - @cmasisak22

"Clarkie and Juice two of my fav guys on and off the ice in that locker room. Will miss you both. Not a fan of the nature of the business" - @brettleonhardt

"If I was Bruce Boudreau, I would make Mike Knuble the captain. Incredibly respected, a guy Ovechkin really listens to." - @FriedmanHNIC

Captain Ovie?

For all the time I’ve spent arguing AO should be the C, I really don’t know what to expect, now. I’d like to see it, but I’m sad Clarkie’s gone.

Same here, I really liked Clark. I don’t know how I feel about this yet, I’m kind of stunned right now and I don’t like Chimera.

I’m stunned also. I know performance wise, Clark was expendable but I still liked the guy and felt so bad that he had all the injury problems.

Question

Do you guys think Ovechkin gets named Captain, or will it be someone else?

by Yoshietree on Dec 28, 2009 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

This isn’t a team where you best choices are Witt and Halpern, though. There’s genuine leadership in both AO and Laich, and one of them will take it, IMO, even though I think it should be AO.

I still consider a week immediate but we all know the next captain in red is going to be a ‘long term’ decision, or at least I’d hope so.

If fans can argue about acquisitions and strategy (none of which we have a say in) why shouldn’t we discuss the captain situation?

I think it’s a waste of db space also, would rather hear analysis, but no need to nitpick what fans can post impotently about.

by snowburnt on Dec 28, 2009 8:53 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

personally, i think the fans just have so much less real insight into the captain debate. we only know what we can gleam from interviews and testimonials. as much as we think we know these guys, we don’t really know these guys.

by Natty Bumppo on Dec 28, 2009 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly. We know the salary cap, salary owed each player, and we have our opinions of their relative worth. Making dream rosters is at least based in some measure of reality. The Captain is all about what he does in the room and how his teammates feel about him. We don’t know any of that stuff so it’s basically a popularity contest.

We also have to consider that McPhee has a better pulse on the locker room than any of the fans. He must have felt that Clark’s leadership was replaceable.

Not to ignore the aspect of losing a player that we all like, cause Clark is certainly that.

I’d hope that the 100+ million reasons he already has are enough to keep him happy.

This seems a little naive. Athletes have egos, Ovechkin included. You would run a risk of insulting him by not offering it to him. Why take that risk?

Teams name players as captain all the time in order to flatter them (Kovalchuk)….even if the player isn’t qualified as a traditional captain (Luongo), or is arguably too inexperienced (Toews, Crosby, Richards). Why do you think they do that?

by Ginga on Dec 28, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

I think Toews was more than qualified to take the captaincy on arrival, but that’s just me? Hardly invalidates your point.

by redlineblue on Dec 28, 2009 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

My $$ is on either Knuble or Brooksy, both respected and beloved by fans and NHL alike. I don’t think Ovie needs to be the Captain…

Am I the only person here who is perfectly okay with this trade? Juice and Clark were two of the handful of guys I knew I wouldn’t sob if they were traded, and Chimera was apparently very popular with the Jackets locker room and staff. He may bring some of the grit writers have been saying the Caps need, but he can actually play and score, unlike say, David Koci or the countless goons GMGM could have traded for if he’d been stupid. But he’s not.

by thebigfoist on Dec 28, 2009 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

Well, a lot of us are okay with the trade itself – but Clark (and Juice, to a lesser extent) was beloved for his off-ice stuff. I’ll be okay with how this one shakes out, I’m guessing, and I think it was a good move from a hockey standpoint. Just sad to see a couple of my faves go.

by Becca H on Dec 28, 2009 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

I’m ok with it. I have no problem with moving Juice, as I’m one of the few that prefer ShaMo still. Clark I am just sentimental about, but I think Chimera gives the Caps a lot of what they were missing.

Quick Ovie for captain tangent – does anyone (other than me) think that it might be a good idea to give Ovie the C to help him further develop/rehabilitate his reputation with the zebras? Seems like they’ve had it in for him lately, and more face time might help. I feely admit this may be crackpot, though, since he talks to them plenty already.

by grapejoos on Dec 28, 2009 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

I really don’t see Knuble as the Captain of this team. I hear he’s a great locker room guy, and he seems to have imparted some of his wisdom to Fehr and Brooks, but the next captain of this team is AO or Laich, I think.

Chimera’s a good fit for the bottom six, Jurcina’s expendable (physicality is a means, not an end and all) and Clark’s on a bad contract.

Re: Laich as Captain

For whatever reason, Brooks Laich was not made part of the “A” rotation which included Tom Poti, Mike Knuble, and Brendan Morrison (not to mention Ovechkin’s perma-A). How does Laich get it over the four alternates we have now?

I understand why WE see Laich as a captain, but for whatever reason he wasn’t deemed worthy a few months ago for a lesser honor.

If there was any doubt as to the next captain, it was erased completely during the 3rd period of the Edmonton game. Ovechkin is the captain of this squad, and has been for quite some time, imo.

Here are Ovi’s thought on the Olympic team captaincy, from Sovetsky Sport via Russian Machine Never Breaks. And I never want to hear another word from anyone about his ‘selfishness’. He is gracious and modest, and that speaks even better to his character as a once and future Captain:

"Mora is our captain"

DC: Your teammate on the Olympic team Ilya Kovalchuk is at a crossroads. He’s going to become a Free Agent in the summer. According to rumors he may go to DC.
AO: I doubt whether he will play for the Caps. But if it will happen, Washington will become a killing team!
DC: Can you give advice for a friend?
AO: I don’t think Ilya needs any. He’s an experienced guy. He has an alternative. He may quietly play for the rest of the season, go to the market and find a team he wants. There is no sense to advise him on this. I will be happy for him in any case. He decides a great deal. He’s the leader of his team.
DC: You’re right about Kovalchuk’s leadership. What do you think, can he become a captain of the Russian Olympic team?
AO: You should ask the coaches about it. But we have a captain – Alexey Morozov. Every one of our players is a leader in the locker room. Everyone can scold if something is wrong. In terms of it, the "C" on a jersey it’s only a formality. But it’s not right. You should deserve it. Mora deserve it, like nobody’s business.

So since he already does that in nearly every game, it bothers you?

by Caps_Chick on Dec 28, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

My theory on Laich not getting the ‘A’ is that he’s going to act the same way – bringing leadership and hard work on every shift, in the locker room, etc. – regardless of whether he has a letter on his jersey. Some of the other guys maybe are able to step up that part with the ‘A’.

But he’d make a FANTASTIC captain, no question about it. And this ain’t the presidency (or Miss America) – you don’t have to be “next in line” to take the job.

So… the Caps move what — in the cold calculus of evaluation — are extra pieces to get tougher and cheaper. They do it with enough time before the trading deadline to get a really good picture of how the remaining pieces fit, both in terms of production and chemistry. They have enough cap room to make a deal, if they think they need a piece or two.

My friend, a Blue Jackets fan, just texted me and said Chimera’s a fun guy and we’ll like having him. And knowing the way GMGM values chemistry almost as much as the talent on the ice, I have no doubt he’ll be a great addition.

Nice. This is a fun team, and chemistry is one of those elusive intangible qualities necessary to win a Cup, so hopefully he will fit right in.

by RedBirdie on Dec 28, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

Poti’s A has been variable. In the Free Alex game we almost ran out of alternate captains…AO was in the brig, Knuble was still in recovery, and only BMo was wearing an A.

If AO gets the C, it’s either Laich or Backstrom with the A, methinks. Backis is absolutely a leader on this team, he’s just damn quiet about it.

But he’s never worn the A. (Brooksie has occasionally worn the A but he’s been behind Knuble and Morrison and Poti in that department.) Logical guy for the C — Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin. Okay, he was not ready 4 years ago but that was 4 years ago. There’s no reason that he’s less capable of being a C than Mike Richards of Philthy, Sid Crosby of Pitt, or Jonathan Toews.

Chimera is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL. His speed is his best weapon, and it leads to many offensive chances when playing with other fast skaters. Chimmer also has a nose for the net, and possesses a good slapper.

We as fans, strictly emotional fans, have been very lucky to see the same guys grow into the premiere team in hockey over the past 3 seasons. We’re attached to them. It’s hard not to be when the roster has so little turn over. Rationally, this is the nature of the business, and it was bound to happen at some point. But it still sucks, it’s like when your best friend in third grade moves away.

Now for a little speculation:

If Chimera is as quick as the scouting reports say he is, and he’s a tough player who likes to be around the net, might he get a tryout on a line with Ovie and/or Semin to give them a little protection and a quick winger to take advantage of their good passing skills?

Hey, somebody's got to speculate.

AO – Backs – Semin
Flash – BMo – Knuble

Laing – Steckel – Bradley

Green – ShaMo
Sloan – Schultz
Erskine – Alzner

When Clarkie had his teeth and palate crushed by a shot in 2006, yet stayed out and finished his shift, McPhee said
""That’s one of the most courageous things you’ll see on the rink. So the next time someone has a runny nose, or feels under the weather and doesn’t think they should play, that should make them think twice."
It’s guys like Chris Clark, Q Liang, et al, who perhaps more than even Ovie at times make you love the game so much .

Columbus needed a serviceable replacement for Klesla, who’s down for … a long time. They are also one of the youngest teams in the League and are desperately in need of veteran leadership. The Caps could use some cap space and some roster space (remember, Gordo’s coming back soon folks) and can spare both of CLB’s needs. They get Chimera back, who joins Erskine in the ability to drop ’em at need and has speed and (I think) some pest-like qualities.

Completely agreed, DP. The captain needs to be the one who most exemplifies your team, in effort, ethic, skill, and style. He also needs to be someone willing to stand up for your teammates. For a long time, Clark was that guy.

I’d imagine Chimera is happy(to go to a winning team who has a shot at the cup, and to play with the best hockey player in the world), though probably the same bittersweet happy most players feel when traded suddenly.

by breaklance on Dec 28, 2009 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

From the scouting report it seems like this guy has a bit of finesse but also has a rough and tumble to him (similar to Knuble).
One thing to look at is his capacity. He may get alot better being on a stronger offensive team. Whereas Clarke was coming back to form; but, prolly doesn’t have the space for improvement Chimera does. (WAS > CBJ)

GMGM prolly has more up his sleeve before the deadline. With Juice getting moved out, I feel like they may be trying to move around the D, with the success of Alzner and the other Bears.
As far as Clarke goes, thats on CBJ. They desperately need a leader.

Yeah, Chimera does fight, although he’s not too good at it.

Can anyone who has watched Chimera a lot vouch for how effective of a forechecker he is? IMO if he is relentless in attacking the puck and creating turnovers then he could prove invaluable in the playoffs.

I loved what Clark gave for this team (and will always remember that awesome diving, between the legs poke from the NJ game) but this helps the Caps on the ice. But it still tugs the heartstrings big time. He signed in DC when few others would, and it sucks he’s getting shipped out just as things are firing on all cylinders.

by D'ohboy on Dec 28, 2009 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with this. I think you could make a very strong argument that Olie was the greatest pre-Ovie Capital in franchise history, in terms of his accomplishments, team success, and contribution to the community.

by grapejoos on Dec 28, 2009 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

I’m guessing that you don’t remember Langway that well? There aren’t any hockey writers that have created a “Olie Kolzig” award, Mirtle does have a “Rod Langway” award though. Many would argue Langway saved hockey in Washington.

My argument against the comment honestly has less to do with Kolzig than it does with the ASAP part.

by Sct112 on Dec 28, 2009 5:52 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn’t a Caps fan during the Langway era, so I don’t remember him, no. From what I’ve heard he would be the other one in the argument for greatest Cap ever. Not Hunter (whom I do remember), Gartner, or Labre. Saving hockey in DC is certainly a big deal. I still think Olie’s accomplishments are hard to argue against on their own merits, though.

I agree that there’s no rush, especially with the clearing of the air that needs to eventually happen between Olie and the club.

by grapejoos on Dec 28, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

I love Olie. But Olie and Hunter are competing with Langway for greatest Cap ever the way that Backstrom and Green are competing for best Cap right now.

Regardless of who was a better player (and someone on the team is coming close to having something to say about this), Kolzig has to get some extra love over Langway for being drafted by the franchise.

Different question than the one originally posed though, and evidence as to why other factors than “who was better” matter.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Dec 28, 2009 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think some of you quite get the fact that Langway is considered one of the, if not the greatest, defensive d-men ever. Kolzig, and even Jags, who while a great player, isn’t held in nearly the same regard as Langway, much less given that his time in DC was a disaster.

Getting drafted by a team is pretty close to irrelevant. Almost every player gets traded at least once in their career.

Maybe its that I’m one of the few around here who actually saw Rod play. :-)

A man gotta have a code

by Carl Putnam on Dec 28, 2009 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not arguing that. Until 2019, Langway is the greatest player who suited up in a Caps sweater.

It’s a very good point. I discounted it somewhat because he didn’t play his whole career in DC, but clearly his prime was with the Caps. If I had seen him play, based on what you’re saying, I’m sure I’d feel differently. I still think arguably second (or even third if you include Ovie) greatest player in franchise history deserves a retired number, based on the precedent set with Labre, Hunter, and Gartner.

I remember later in the game, he got a penalty, and everyone did a standing ovation. He actually seemed to smile about that too.

Juice

Not a lot of discussion about losing Juice here. Contract issues aside, there are a few other defenders I’d lose before Juice. A solid part of the D-corp, in my opinion. Are we saying that with Sloan and a healthy Poti we’re feeling OK?

I am sad about it but this deal makes a lot of sense. It frees up salary cap now and let’s be honest sentiment aside given the TOI Clark has been getting and the line he has been playing on he is/was being overpaid. Chimera for Clark given where the Caps need a seasoned forward now and shedding ~$1+M of Cap hit makes sense right now. I think we will miss Jurcina and Clark’s grit and Juice’s checking but now with wanting to make/keep room for Alzner and guessing that the Jackets wanting help at both ends it was iunevitable they wanted a Defensemen as well in the trade. Guessing they didn’t like Erskine’s age (possibly among other things though he has been playing well lately) and the Caps probably didn’t want to offer up Sha-Mo, Alzner or Carlson that probably left Jurcina as “that guy”.

To me it’s clearly time AO is the Captain if he wants it so everything considered including the depth of the Caps organization and there real need for Cap space to sign some more guys who are up for RFA this June, I think this is a low risk, sensible trade that is good for both teams.

Good and Bad...

Good:
When you get the best player of all of them in a trade, you’re more likely to come out ahead. Chimera is a better player now than Clark due to age, and injury history. Chimera is a better player than Jurcina as well.

The dropping of over $2M in cap space makes signing Backstrom to a nice, long term deal a real possibility.

Adding Chimera also means that Bradley doesn’t have to be the guy bleeding all over an opponent dropping the gloves if needed

Bad:
Trading the captain of a team always has an impact on the team. Clark was the guy they all looked up to when their was an issue.

As for who the next captain will be… I don’t know. If Ovie is ready to be captain, then he will be given the “C”. If not, then one of the current “A’s” will get it (Knuble, Poti, Bradley or B. Morrison). No one on the current roster has worn a C at the NHL level other than Bradley (one game…). I know there’s a lot of lobbying for Laich, but despite how he plays, he might be a bit less outgoing, and a captain needs to be able to get in the face of the opponent, the officials, and also be the guy everyone looks to to be the leader. Laich would make a good choice, but Knuble or Bradley might be better.

All of that is moot if the team thinks Ovie is ready. If he his, then it’s his “C”. A player of his magnitude should be the captain if he has the leadership skills.

One last thing. Here is hoping the Caps will hold off giving out #17 until 2011-12 season. Clark was here 5 years, and putting that number on the shelf for awhile will allow for a transition.

Let's go Caps!

Now I’m sorry if this has been asked, but I read through most of the comments before laughing hysterically at the hate for Tom Poti and how it popped up in what should be a sad post about losing the captain for another team’s underachieving third liner. So I wiped the tears out of my eyes and jumped to the bottom to pose this question – and if it has been answered I’m sorry – but how many NHL teams have traded their captain away mid-season and gone on to win the Stanley Cup?

Here is a HFboards link where they list captains and I don’t notice any …

You have to make the D swap, but GMGM would never go for that. I just wanted you to have to choose Poti. I’ve never seen a guy alienate fan bases like Poti. Drury is an anchor, maybe Sather moves it at some point, but I doubt it. Gomez was at least relatively productive. You guys have a bunch of entry level contracts ready to contribute? That’s about the only way you’ll be able to continue to round out competitive teams if those veterans don’t turn it around.

Damn shame that they don’t buy into rebuilding in NY. Stepan and Grachev will be huge parts of the offense … but not for two, three seasons. As for the blueliners, Kreider will also join the youngsters but from all accounts, not for FOUR years. Sanguinetti and McDonagh are both studs but Sanguinetti has been the subject of trade rumours ever since MDZ passed the nine games-played mark.

It is just a shame that they are wasting Hank’s stellar netminding and an actually healthy Gaborik by surrounding them with so much … crap.

by Natty Bumppo on Dec 29, 2009 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

Couple of interesting things about this trade:

1) The only guys on the Caps who are signed for as long or longer than Jason Chimera are Ovechkin and Green. Of course, the only guys signed for as long or longer than Clark were Green, Ovechkin, and Tom Poti.

2) I think Columbus really needs Juice more than they need Clark. They’ve been hurting for for defensemen – any defensemen – ever since Rusty Kesla got injured. As emotional as we are about Clark (and I admit to being upset myself), I think he’s just gravy in this trade to Columbus.

3) Chimera definitely fits a role this team needs. Not just the “big, physical role-player-who-can-drop-the-gloves” sort of guy, but also the “speedy-forward-who-can-wreak-havoc-when-he’s-in-on-the-forecheck” guy. That we get both in one is a huge bonus.

4) The cap room is huge, but not because of who we get in a trade (though that may be huge) or additional salary for Backstrom. Instead, this move frees up cap room to resign B-Mo, Fehr, and Flash. All are UFA or RFA at the end of this year, and if Flash and Fehr both end up with 20+ goals and/or 50+ points, they’ll be looking for a raise. If B-Mo finishes with 50+ points, he’ll definitely be looking for more than 1.5 million a year. If Fehr and Flash can be resigned for 1.5-2 million each, and B-Mo can be resigned in the range of 2-2.5 mil for a short period of time, it’s a huge win for the Caps.

Right. And Brads was the better choice. But team toughness is a team thing. Getting in on the forecheck and punishing D is a team thing. As much as Clark was willing to do all that, he couldn’t really do it. Chimera is an upgrade in the tangible part of the game, GMGM is just banking that there is still enough leadership in the remaining guys to make up for the loss we will feel from Clark.

just trying to imagine what our 3rd and 4th lines will look like from here on out. if the caps add an expensive C and try to roll 3 legit scoring lines, then the amount of room available for a grinder like bradley becomes even smaller.

Yeah, but if the team adds a Jason Arnott, your third line looks something like Chimera, Arnott, Laich, and you start going nuts, because it’s a scoring line that grinds.
