Cmon Varly
Get healthy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by washfan29 on Dec 23, 2009 1:08 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Don’t rush him, dude. Groin injuries are picky things. I’m not worried about having him for the regular season prior to the break – Neuvirth and Theodore will do just fine holding down the fort until then. I want him completely healthy, rested, and fresh for the playoffs, because that’s where he’s needed most.
Unleash the Alex!
I’m sorry not too high on Neuvirth as much as other people seem to be and theo is not good w/o being pushed by varly
by washfan29 on Dec 23, 2009 1:21 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I understand, although I don’t entirely agree. There are not many goaltenders who are ready to play in the NHL at 21 years old, which is what Neuvirth is. It’s time to push Neuvirth and find out where he is; since he found his feet he’s been very solid in the AHL.
I think the Neuvirth may need more seasoning before he’s NHL-ready, but that he’s got a long and promising career ahead of him.
Unleash the Alex!
I'm still iffy with him
That’s just the way I feel about him though

Perfectly cool, but right now the Caps have the luxury of being able to audition goalies in December. Better now than in March. When you know what you’ve got, you have an idea of whether you’re going to resign the guy, bring him up next year, trade him at the deadline for a missing piece, etc.
Like him or not, it’s a pretty good time to give him a second shot.
Unleash the Alex!
How many 21-year-old Gs have you ever been sold on?

Dan Ellis is my best goalie. Feel sorry for me.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
My other goalies are Thomas (inherited him) and Khabibulin, who I took real late in the draft just hoping for starts. Bleh.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Bryzg on free agents was probably the only good thing I’ve done with my team all season in fantasy :(
I drafted an awesome team outside of the goalies and dumped the crappy keepers that I inherited for good players. Goalies are keeping me out of first place.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I have thornton, Kovalchuk, Hossa, and bryzgalov and still can’t win :(
loosing markov and kronwall ruined my drafted D
I’m okay with this. The young guys need to get the starts to raise their game. I’d rather give him this one than NJD on Saturday.
I could have been equipment manager, but nooooo!
I think he should get in as many games as he can before varly gets healthy. I’d rather see what this kid is really made of now rather than in the spring. Although I would have said the same thing about Varly last year but he turned out alright.

Makes sense to me. Give Neuvirth one more start before he goes back to Hershey, see what he does with back-to-back starts. Starting him against the Devils on Saturday is tantamount to throwing him to the wolves, and Varly is supposed to be back next week. it’s as good a time as any to find out where he is in his development, and better than most.
What’s the rush on Varly? Fresh Varly for the playoffs = good.
Unleash the Alex!
Agreed. Absolutely do NOT rush Varly.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Def. Don't rush Varly
But what about a russian machine never breaks (or gets tweaked or pulled)

Sorry about Markov forgot about you too
by washfan29 on Dec 23, 2009 1:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
There’s one Russian machine that never breaks. The other two (and the two that were here last year that are no longer around) break with surprising frequency.

Careful what you wish for… but yeah.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I agree. I think we need to see what he’s got against a truly good team. I see these couple of starts having implications for the off-season and potentially the trade deadline.
Unleash the Alex!
I was not impressed with his audition against the Canadiens, but I’d like to see what he can do against the Sabres after what we all saw in Edmonton. Let’s hope he has a bit more confidence in his game since coach is giving him another start.
Right, my bad – I assumed that it was the Leafs game (his real stinker) that was unimpressive, though against the Habs he was most certainly not terrific either. My bad, terpgrrl.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
No problem. The Habs game sticks out to me because I was there. I actually forgot about the Leafs. That was part of a back-to-back right? I probably tried to block that from my memory.
BTW – I’m finally getting to use my season tickets tonight and I get Neuvy again. We don’t have a good track record.
Yeah, back-end of a B2B. Team was terrible (top line good early). Neuvy wasn’t good at all.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
And I totally butchered my link BTW.

I actually prefer starting Neuvirth tonight over Saturday. And although he did not look as good as I know he can against the Canadiens, I will chalk that up to nerves and let it go, because he’s a damn good goalkeeper from everything I’ve seen. He’s also just barely old enough to drink.
I think, in the long run, he will make a good tandem pairing (1A/1B) with Varlamov, especially if they can keep their mutual injury society meetings set up on opposite schedules… if they’re both hurt at the same time, that could be problematic.
What makes you say Habs here?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
IRTR wrote “although he did not look as good as I know he can against the Canadiens” then amended it (I think) with “(Leafs, not Habs).” You then corrected it to Habs. What makes you think that it wasn’t the Leafs game to which IRTR meant to refer initially?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Ok I see now. I didn’t realize IRTR wrote the initial comment and assumed it was just snark on his part using the same response that you did. I guess I need more attention to detail.

“We just want to let other GMs see what he can do.”
Fixed.
Alternatively, we can’t afford the traditional 3-goal deficit of Theo’s against Ryan Miller.
Ima thinking the final score is 3-2 (Gimmick). Not predicting which team comes out on top.
ALEX, FЯEE
Caps are gonna blow Miller up tonight. Habeeb it.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
Hopefully they just light him up. Blowing him up could mess up the ice and/or be inappropriate for young children.

Hey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m an idiot. Miller’s such a common name that I never thought he might be from that family.

Ryan Miller is a cousin, iirc, of Kelley, Kip, and Kevin.
Fun fact: A popular opinion can still be stupid.
Here’s the tree…
Elwood (“Butch”) Miller was the first Miller (1955). His son, Dean, played for State, and Dean had two sons play for State (Ryan, Drew).
Butch’s younger brother, Lyle, followed Butch to MSU in the early 60’s. He had three sons skate for MSU (Kelly, Kevin, Kip).
Two other cousins — Taylor and Curtis Gemmel — played for MSU in the mid 1990’s.
That makes ten.
MSU freshmen are required to memorize this.

I have an MSU freshman. I should give him the quiz. Heh.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Nah. The Caps are catching BUF at the right time. They were on a roll, but they definitely looked more mortal against (the Leafs?) last game.
The Caps are coming home, they’re rested, and they got shut out last game.
Caps win this one in regulation.
And, I’m not Neuvous about the ‘tender situation. I’d rather run Neuvy out there for seasoning and evaluation purposes than let Threeormore do his thing.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
I tweeted this, but I’ll bring it on home as well:
Ryan Miller has given up five goals in a game once this season. Four goals once. Hasn’t given up more than 3 in 14 games. Yikes.
Miller is 9-4-1/1.79/.944 in his last 14 games, 21-7-2/.938/1.89 on the season. Save it for Vancouver (or at least not tonight), Millertime!
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Prejudice against goalies notwithstanding, there isn’t even a second place finisher for the Hart (at this point in the season) as far as I’m concerned. Without Miller, that’s a 35-point team — maybe — not a 47-point one.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Agreed. He’s far and away the frontrunner.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
No love for Gaborik carrying the Rangers to .500?
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
If you had to fill out three finalists, Gaborik’s one of the other two, for sure. But it’s still Miller in a walk, IMO.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Gaborik isn’t a far and away the most valuable player on his team that Miller is on his. True, Gaborik is the only double-digit goal scorer on his club (perhaps strangely, though, he has only two game-winners among his 25, tied with Ryan Callahan and Ales Kotalik), but there is also Henrik Lundqvist, who has been even more of an iron man this year that in years past (32 appearances in 36 games, and who knows when Chad Johnson is going to get on the ice?).
If you've read this far...seek help.
I agree completely. I was just adding him to the discussion when I brought him up.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
I’d be more inclined to have Thornton as a Pearson finalist, but as the most valuable player on his team, I might be inclined to lean to Henrik Sedin.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Henrik Sedin is a solid choice.

Gaborik isn’t a far and away the most valuable player on his team that Miller is on his.
Is this the criteria? I read somewhere that last year Mike Green was the most valuable Capital, and he wasn’t even a finalist…

The Hart citation does state the player “most valuable to his team.” The Pearson is for “most outstanding player.”

Good thing they don't hand out the hardware before New Year's
It’s only slightly more likely that the Sun will rise in the east than it is that Miller will miss time with an injury. Hopefully not until March.
