Pre-training camp?
Like, rookie camp?
by DrinkingPartner on Dec 22, 2009 3:00 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Flash was never healthy — blood clot happened right after the playoffs. So there never was a pre-training camp roster. But we all know what he means. It’s just Bruce being folksy.

yeah, finally – although (silver lining) it’s been a nice “count your blessings” lesson, seeing how well some of the hershey kids did in the place of the injured

I think the whole org – SC to Hershey to the Cappies – has done a great job. No single injury has “done us in” (save missing AO v. the dam dirty Debbils), and everyone stepped up when called upon.
Get healthy Varly back and we’re scary good again. Though it will be a real scrum for ice time on lines 3 & 4.

Just noticed you said “Cappies”! I never heard anyone else say that! (might just be a sheltered young man) Maybe I don’t stand alone in Caps nation after all. Is this a more common practice than I thought?

The Cappies is the high school theater equivalent of the Tony award show. It stands for Critics and Awards Program and was started by the late Bill Strauss of the Capitol Steps. Just FYI!

I call shenanigans. It’s absolutely impossible to have a full, 100% healthy Caps squad. Ain’t gonna happen. Ever.

Also, Circles was on that roster. So we will never again have the full “pre-training camp” roster. Thank God.

Thank you. Hockey is a contact collision sport. It’s always tempting to envision the ideal, but I’m more than happy with what we got right now.

If Alzner wasn’t on the original roster, and the team is better with him, then do we actually want that roster?

Somewhat of a throw-away comment. I doubt that any NHL team is in that state.
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.

If the Caps are healthy...
…then there is no team in the NHL that can beat them 4 out of 7…
The catch is to be healthy come April 14…
Let's go Caps!

Disagree right now. Of course, if we’re successful against NJ i could be pulled in the other direction. NJ thoroughly waxed the Pens last night.

I’m liking the team this year too, but let’s put on the brakes for a second. IMO the defense still needs at least one more upgrade and we could also use a steady 3C.
by Kolzilla on Dec 22, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think 3C will be fine, if anything, we can stick the ever-versatile Laich there and it’ll still be fine. And our rotating Bears did very well there as well. I say the defense upgrade is a much bigger priority.
Also disagree though. I concur with the NJ point and would even say Buffalo with a not-possibly-human Miller might also be able to beat the Caps 4 out of 7. And let us be wary of the West….
by Vinn on Dec 22, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The fact that Brooks wasn’t in the team’s plans as a center to begin the season doesn’t say great things about his ability to hold down 3C over the long haul to me. The current setup seems more makeshift than anything else. Maybe it works great and maybe it doesn’t, but I don’t see Brooks as a great solution there. It also means you have to play a weaker winger such as Tyler Sloan.
by Kolzilla on Dec 22, 2009 4:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I still think they’re moving Brooks around too much. Yes, he’s versatile, but he really ought to be having a more defined role.

FWIW, he seems to like being the utility man.
by Seminrocks on Dec 22, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The problem with “utility man” is that it’s only a step further than “swingman.” And our swingman probably isn’t long for the team.

Our record against the West is one of the strongest in the Eastern Conference at 5-2-1. NJD is 2-2-1 and PIT is 5-4-1; the only one better is BUF at 6-0-0.

Standings
Our next 2 games are probably the most important all year. If we win, will be back on top of the standings, but if we lose, we could see NJ pull away from us as the top team in the league.
by CAPFan4Life on Dec 22, 2009 5:10 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
C’mon.
It’s December. There’s plenty of time for NJD to lose their edge, and the same for Pittsburgh. Fatigue, injuries, and second rate play can happen to anyone.
The Caps were unbeatable for a good stretch in Jan/Feb last year. Then they entered the playoffs looking way more vulnerable.
These next two games are completely not the most important all year.

I’m sure he meant of all year so far. In which case I still disagree, but you could argue for these two as much as any others.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Dec 22, 2009 6:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
While the next two games may not be the most important games for the Caps this year, they are certainly what can be called “statement” games. A great performance by the Caps would say a lot.

I agree that it’s important to get a win over NJD. I don’t think the game is important otherwise, not for standings or groove or anything else.
But it would be nice to get it over the Debbils.
by DrinkingPartner on Dec 22, 2009 9:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That would be wery nice (as Pavel Chekov and Alex Ovechkin would say).
Ovi couldn’t play in the games at NJ. And Sasha should be nice and fired up to get revenge.

Last year, Brodeur looked fantastic when he came back from his injury. Then, he looked more mortal in April (and the Caps stayed ahead of them for seeding.)
He and the Devils blew Game 7 against Carolina in Round 1 last year. Yes, the Devils could not hold onto their lead in the last 2 minutes.

We’re just workin’ a few kinks out. Primarily wtf to do about a trap defense and a brick wall named Martin Brodeur. But only after we figger out the other brick wall named Ryan Miller.

Meh, the PP will come, that’s the least of our concerns. Finding out how our full roster comes together and if we can play solid D as a team…I want to improve our weakness now and not have to worry come April/May/June. Nyls was the first step, Alzner’s appears to be the next step, March will hopefully be the final one.

It’s the first time we’ve basically had our full roster. October we were missing Flash and Fehr. In November, it was quite the long list. Either Ovi or Semin was out for every game. Not to mention Knuble, Morrisonn, and many others.
