Sacco may take offense, but Koci’s been sitting in the press box since last Tuesday; take whatever message you want to infer (or imply) from that.

All the more reason there was nothing to lose and something to gain by suspending that cretin, no?

Yeah, but what about Sacco’s general point? Does anyone think Bruce shouldn’t have been so forthcoming in his comments about the hit? I guess I don’t—it was an obvious cheap shot that deserved a suspension, so I think once that line has been crossed the opposing coach should have a little free rein to complain.

But I’m also not offended by Sacco’s attempts to back up his guy as well.

by bilspacecadet on Dec 22, 2009 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

Sacco has to support his player since it was Sacco himself who put that type of player out there for that type of hit. If he condemns his player he condemns his own coaching style.

by HateOffSeason on Dec 22, 2009 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

I guess that opens the question of which is more likely to be traded, Flash or Fehr. True that BB loves Flash (and we’re starting to see why), but there’s several teams out there that are looking desperately for scoring and scoring we’ve got. Fehr is more of a net presence when he’s on his game, something the Caps don’t have tons and tons of.

by gotsparkly on Dec 22, 2009 7:27 AM EST reply actions

Either way, Lyle’s pick of Fehr as the Cap most likely to be trade bait is insane. Got to be either Juice or ShaMo, right? If future salary concerns is an issue, I would think Flash would be more likely to go first.

by apk3000 on Dec 22, 2009 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

I have to think that Flash would be worth a fair amount at the deadline if he continues as he is (correct me if I’m wrong). I also have to think of ShaMo and Jurcina as being more in the nature of trade bait first – the pick of Fehr does not address the defensive glut at all. (Your average hockey writer probably isn’t aware that there is one.)

Unleash the Alex!

From what we’ve seen, it appears the average hockey writer (DC excepted) doesn’t have much in the way of intelligent thought.

by gfcaps fan on Dec 22, 2009 8:35 AM EST up reply actions

Honestly, if Flash continues as he is, unless the return is someone like Milan Lucic or Pronger/Nieds, he’s worth way more to us to keep and use.

That said, I don’t think Fehr or Flash will command enough interest from the league, anyway.

by DrinkingPartner on Dec 22, 2009 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

I’m of the opinion that if we’re not going to keep Semin at season’s end then we should make sure we retain Flash, especially if this proves to be the season that he ‘gets it’. If we lose both of them we lose anywhere between 60-80 goals per year from those two. I know we’d get something in return, but I’m not sure I’m comfortable losing that much offense.

by BradleyFightingVehicle on Dec 22, 2009 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

I guess it depends, but this is a fair point.

by gotsparkly on Dec 22, 2009 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Semin’s going anywhere. I think he may make negotiations difficult, but I do think he’ll take a slight paycut to continue playing with AO and Backs.

More Juice than ShaMo, provided the latter is completely healthy and actually starts turning in performances relative to salary.

I think Lyle was probably going with a working definition of “bait” that included “desirable to other teams,” hence Fehr (and Flash would be another good choice here, as stated).

by Sombrero Guy on Dec 22, 2009 8:38 AM EST up reply actions

If you go with that working definition, could Neuvirth be included in that list or is it still too early to think about that? Varly’s fantastic but isn’t the most durable netminder ever born, and I have to think that that concerns the Caps. Would the Caps want to wait and see how Holtby does for another season or should Neuvirth be considered tradeable at this point?

Unleash the Alex!

by gotsparkly on Dec 22, 2009 8:39 AM EST up reply actions

I think Neuvirth could absolutely be considered trade bait.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Dec 22, 2009 8:44 AM EST up reply actions

Certainly Neuvirth fits into that working definition of “bait” as in “desirable”. It’s solely a question to me of whether the Caps are sure enough of Varly as a long-term solution to be willing to package Neuvirth.

Maybe they do what they did with Olie and Jim Carey – worked out pretty good the last time.

Unleash the Alex!

by gotsparkly on Dec 22, 2009 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

They’d have to be somewhat bowled over, I’d think, and the likelihood of that happening is slim. But I think given what Varly has done, Holtby’s development and the simple fact that there are always goalies out there as safety nets, I think he’s potentially moveable.

Regarding Olie and Ace, it’s worth recalling that it’s not so much what the Caps did with the pair as what Boston did – Poile gave the B’s their choice of which goalie to include in the package, and they chose Carey. Oops.

That’s what i meant by what the Caps did – they gave Boston their choice. True that it was Boston’s choice, though.

I was initially thinking at the beginning of the year that they’d wait one more season, but with Holtby doing as well as he is in Hershey, maybe they can afford to move Neuvirth.

Unleash the Alex!

by gotsparkly on Dec 22, 2009 9:01 AM EST up reply actions

Or Holtby?

My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.

by jordanDC on Dec 22, 2009 9:01 AM EST up reply actions

Well, the Caps are in position to potentially win now, and while McPhee isn’t one to throw everything away for this year, given their cap space situation I have to expect them to be shoppers at the deadline. Holtby shows a huge amount of promise for his age but has never seen NHL ice time. Neuvirth has, and while his record isn’t spotless by any means, when he’s on, he’s solid as a rock. Holtby is the bigger question mark of the two, and therefore has less value on the market than Neuvirth.

Don’t get me wrong. I like Neuvirth, a whole lot. I feel more comfortable watching him than Varly, as he’s the steadier of the two. I’d like to keep him. But is a rookie-rookie tandem next year a good idea on a contender? And if you don’t move them up, you end up with an overcrowded crease again. Varly needs a workhorse goalie to tandem with to keep him fresh.

Unleash the Alex!

by gotsparkly on Dec 22, 2009 9:11 AM EST up reply actions

Where would a rookie-rookie tandem come from if Holtby was traded?

My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.

by jordanDC on Dec 22, 2009 9:12 AM EST up reply actions

Varly / Neuvirth in Washington? Oh, I see what you’re thinking. Potentially leave Neuvirth down in Hershey another year, trade Holtby, and have a Varly / workhorse tandem in Washington. Maybe, but I have to think that Neuvirth brings more value, plus Holtby gets ice time in Hershey. Leaving Neuvirth in Hershey may be hard on him if he is NHL-ready by that time.

Unleash the Alex!

by gotsparkly on Dec 22, 2009 9:15 AM EST up reply actions

Nope.. If we trade Holtby at or before the deadline, you’d keep Neuvirth in Hershey until next season where he’d back up Varly, who would no longer be a rookie.

Nope.. If we trade Holtby at or before the deadline, you’d keep Neuvirth in Hershey until next season where he’d back up Varly, who would no longer be a rookie.I would argue that if you trade Neuvirth, you have to go out and get a more experienced backup for Varly before next season because Holtby needs at least a full season as #1 Bear before he can be #2 Cap.

by jordanDC on Dec 22, 2009 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

Definitely. Even with Neuvy and Varly in the organization, I think you’d need a veteran backup somewhere.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Dec 22, 2009 9:24 AM EST up reply actions

How do you work that? Do you just keep Neuvirth in the minors until you are satisfied that Varlamov is the guy? I’m not a fan of that situation. At some point we need to give Neuvirth more than emergency NHL duty to see what he can do. If we get a veteran we won’t be able to stash him in HER until we need him, so he essentially would be taking up an NHL roster spot all year.

I’ve been sleeping in like I have nothing to do today! Which I don’t.

I’d argue the Caps are good enough to overcome some mediocre goaltending until the trade deadline. It’s more important for them to see what Neuvy has in the NHL than to bank a few extra points (rather, it will be next season).

You’d need to anyway – you want a veteran with Varly no matter what. The bottom line is that whoever you keep is the #1 in Hershey next year, and Varly has a veteran backup. Neuvirth’s got more trade value, though.

Ovechkin and Crosby are both way too high on that list. Here are their point totals from the first five seasons of the decade:

Points..Ovi..Sid
99-00…..0…..0
00-01…..0…..0
01-02…..0…..0
02-03…..0…..0
03-04…..0…..0
04-05 Bettman’d

At the very least, the following players deserve to be ahead of them: Brodeur, Iginla, Niedermayer, and yes, Joe “poop the playoffs” Thornton. I think anyone who is a sure-fire hall of famer based on their body of work this decade gets to be ahead of the two phenoms who, frankly, aren’t hall of famers yet. Ovi and Sid are close to HOF staus already, but it’s still possible that their careers could fizzle. There’s no fizzle possible anymore for the guys I listed above. They’ve proven what they had to prove, and they did it during this decade (and the last).

I Just playing for 10 years vs 5 years does nothing for me. Sid and Ovi, and Malkin have lit up the scoreboard and have carried their clubs just like Joe does at times. I’d choose all 3 over Thornton because I think they are better and do a better job creating for themselves, but I understand your rationale why you wouldn’t. Once again, I like Joe. Heck I was happy for the guy when he was extricated from Boston. He’s been able to better showcase his skills in SJ. That being said he’s not at the top of my list.

One more name we haven’t mentioned is Lidstrom. I’d definitely give him plenty of consideration.

Left wing Alexandre Giroux has taken the team lead in scoring with 33 points on 11 goals and 22 assists. He ranks second in the league in scoring, is tied for fifth in the league in assists and is tied for third in the league in plus-minus with a plus-15 rating.

Call him back up! Surely that success will translate at an NHL level right? …. right?

In that case, you’re making the argument that there are three tiers, and I’m not sure that isn’t wrong. Until we can beat the Devils, there’s going to be a big question mark regarding the playoffs (not to mention that not playing the Penguins until January doesn’t help). It’s not like Marty can’t have a bad night, we just have to catch him at the right time.

The Devs games without Ovi were on either end of his injury, and both were home games for NJ. The first game, a 3-2 loss, was the Caps’ first full game without Ovi in over a year, and the nature of his injury was still shrouded in mystery. IIRC, the status had just gone from “day-to-day” to “week-to-week” but was not yet “4-5 weeks”.

The second game was AO’s last on the bench. We were up 2-0 oh-so-early in the game and then had a complete & total brain cramp and gave up five straight.

The goal horn at The Rock haunts me still.

I have to break it down a tad more than that. Right now I’d have to say that the Devils and the Pens have a step on the Caps b/c of OTL charity points, but part of that could also have something to do with an insane road schedule. That could balance out come spring.

So I gotta go Devs – Pens, Caps – Sabres, and everyone else. The first tier is complete without too much tinkering, the second is right up there but may need a piece at the deadline (BUF needs another scorer) the third is … well.

The Devs know how to stonewall their opponents when they get a lead, and IMO the Pens are still a little more tenacious than the Caps, both in trying to protect a lead or fighting their way back from a deficit. Couple of things to remember, though:

  • NJ got two of those three games without AO in the lineup, and the third without Flash. At no time has NJ played the Caps at full strength. They also got an early – year benefit while the Caps were still working out the kinks.
  • The Caps were 3-0-1 versus the Pens last year. See how much that actually mattered in the playoffs?

I wouldn’t count the Caps out yet, especially since they’ve had the most road-heavy schedule in the league to this point.

Good point about Caps record vs. Pens last year. I think the argument about them needing to figure out how to beat the Devils is more about figuring out how to beat the trap, though. That’s why it’s more important for the Caps to find some success against NJ in the regular season.

My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.

by jordanDC on Dec 22, 2009 9:24 AM EST up reply actions

I’d agree with the trap analysis on this one… the Devils play a very dull game of trap-style hockey, and it tends to confound Washington. I’d like to see us beat NJ at least once this season so that we know we can if we have to face them post-season.

Those three have taken turns being the best team in the East this year. I’d rate Buffalo “1-A,” because they have such a drop off after Ryan Miller. Of the three at the top, I think New Jersey has the advantage of being consistently good, and rarely do they fail to show up against lesser opponents (at least not as much as the Penguins and, to a greater extent, the Caps have).

I have a problem with Pittsburgh because Sidney Crosby has been relied upon for so much of their goal scoring. It’s one thing for the Caps to rely on Ovechkin — that is within their team’s character. Crosby being the goal scorer is outside their usual performance boundaries.

Of the three, the Caps seem best prepared for an injury to a goaltender, New Jersey least so. The Devils are best prepared to lose a top-six forward, the Caps the least (since they depend on offense for so much of their success).

The most overrated team in the group is, in my opinion, Pittsburgh (12 of their 51 standings points have come on wins in Gimmicks, compared to 10 for Jersey and six for the Caps). The most underrated team is Washington, because no one things they can play any defense.

Of the three, I think jersey has the slight edge, mostly for their consistency. One can be more confident that the team you see now is the one you’ll see in May.

Actually, winning the conference could be interesting a problem. Do they re-seed by points alone? I thought they did. Consider this scenario at the end of the season:

no, they do not re-seed on point. They re-seed each round based on where you finished the regular season. Under your proposed scenario, Buffalo and Pitt would not be re-seeded. Assuming all 4 won, round 2 would be WSH-PIT and NJD-BUF.

Marty hasn’t gotten out of the second round since 2003. I’m not writing him off by any means, but let’s not ignore that. He’s had plenty of strong teams and gone nowhere since before the lockout.

2-3 won’t be the deathmatch. 3 will probably be BUF or BOS, and they are the weak team in the top 4. It’s also unlikely that all of 1-4 win; no upsets is rare. Winning the conference is big, it still avoids the 2-4 deathmatch, it’s just a little different from your analysis.

We should definitely worry more about NJ than Pittsburgh. We can beat Pitt and we know it. NJ, I think they’re more of a challenge until we prove we can beat them – hopefully this weekend. That NJ/Pitt game last night – NJ dominated, worked hard, showed great discipline, and then when there was even a small chink, Marty bailed them out. NJ is more capable of frustrating us and taking the wind out of our sails than Pittsburgh.

Not so sure of that. This team with multiple injuries to key players took the eventual Stanley Cup champions to the brink. Mike Knuble said himself last night on the fan forum call that but for a couple of lucky bounces for the Pens, Washington could have gone to the Finals last season, and they’re a better team this season than last.

But by the same token, a strong argument can be made that that series wasn’t as close as the scores (in games or within games). The Caps were utterly dominated, territorially, for most of the series.

Maybe I’m in the minority, but I would much rather play the Devils. I don’t think they can contain the Caps’ offense in a 7-game series, and I think if the Caps have enough time to gameplan to bust the trap, they’ll be able to do so. The Devils have been great this year, but I still think Pitt and the Caps are the two most dangerous playoff teams in the East.

by grapejoos on Dec 22, 2009 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

The Caps’ performance against trappers so far this year scares me. I’m more confident in their ability to out-run and out-gun more free-wheelin’ squads.

It worries me, certainly, but I can’t help but think (perhaps naively) that the Caps can break through the trap when they’re planning for it and seeing it over a 7-game series. Of course, that’s probably what Detroit fans said to themselves in 1995.

by grapejoos on Dec 22, 2009 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

I’d rather play New Jersey too. First of all, I’d think we’d get a better chance from the zebras in that one than we ever will against the Penguin Scum.

Secondly, Marty has shown in the past few years that he wears down in the playoffs. That would certainly be to our advantage.

This.

The Pens are a proven commodity in the playoffs and let’s face it, there’s no reason to think they’re going to be any weaker this time around. The Caps have yet to prove themselves.

by Kolzilla on Dec 22, 2009 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

No, but there are lots of reasons to think that the Caps are stronger this time around. One other major difference – the Caps have room to move at the deadline if they need to. They didn’t last year. Huge difference.

The’re one other thing I think will come into play, something you don’t see in numbers or in personnel. AO’s absence for 8 games is a huge boon for the playoffs. In the playoffs, you win as a team and not on the back of your stars alone. I don’t think they knew about to do that last year – this year, they’ve learned.

by gotsparkly on Dec 22, 2009 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

I think the more accurate conclusion would be that the Caps have more ways to beat Pittsburgh than they do to beat new Jersey. The Devils aren’t getting into any shootouts with the Caps. The Devils are too disciplined for that, especially in a playoff setting. There will be a lot of 2-1 and 3-2 games in there. And the Caps don’t do well in 2-1 and 3-2 games this year (they are 6-8-4 in games in which they score three goals or fewer (including 0-2-1 against New Jersey).

Pittsburgh can be more disciplined in the playoffs — they’ve demonstrated that. But they’re also a team that can open it up, and the Caps are a team that can keep up with them.

The Caps will have almost no chance to play their brand of game against New Jersey. The game they will play more often against the Penguins is more their style.

If you’re relying on who you draw in the playoffs, then you’re probably not the best team in hockey and you don’t deserve the Cup.

I think it’s OK for the fans to be talking about being worried about one team or another’s style of play, but I want the Caps to want to play Pittsburgh. I want the Ca[ps to want to kill the king on the way to the throne. I want the Caps to want to exorcise playoff demons past. I want the Caps to have no fear.

I want the Caps to take the President’s trophy, draw the 8-seed Flyers in round one, the 4-seed Devils in round two, the 2-seed Penguins in round 3, and then score the Cup winning goal against Cris Huet.

If the Caps want to be the best, shouldn’t they want to prove that against the best?

Marty! said his team played especially hard in front of him last night, blocking tons of shots. I hope they’re plenty plenty sore and then eat way too much turkey on Friday.

I think VA allows DC residents to qualify for in-state hunting privileges, being as there is (obviously) no hunting in DC.

If you’re in Maryland, you’re kinda screwed.

You can always buy venison at a specialty butcher. Pry’s Custom Meats, which is west of Frederick, is one such place. It’s expensive, but tasty.

Flyers look even poopier

last night than they have in general this year. They just lay down and took what the Cats were giving them.

Took a look at the recap over on BSH, and this was in the comments:

What’s the over/under on Chris Pronger not even finishing a full season here? My Spidey Sense tells me that he’ll be part of a big trade deadline deal to a contender, well after we’re out of the playoff picture. We’ll get prospects and draft picks in return

Here’s the rub: Pronger is untradeable, unless someone just wants to cut Holmgren a break. The Flyers essentially mortgaged the future in order to take one big swing this year. What a mess.

"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"

by fat_daddyo on Dec 22, 2009 10:00 AM EST reply actions

My Donkey Alarm tells me that commenter is either stupid or joking. Pronger’s not going anywhere. The Flyers are a terrible mess, and now I heard Boucher might be hurt. Circling the drain..

by Rob Parker on Dec 22, 2009 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, it was a commenter. To be fair, some other commenter’s pointed out that the Flyers are stuck with Pronger.

And he’s probably got plenty in the tank for the next couple years, if they can straighten out whatever is going on with the forwards. In fairness, they just might have a bunch of guys having simultaneous career-worst years. Sometimes you catch the lightning in a bottle (see, for example, the Hurricanes’ Cup run; the Detroit Tigers run to the Series; and the ’98 Yankees) and sometimes the lightning zaps your ass.

by Kolzilla on Dec 22, 2009 10:08 AM EST up reply actions

I think it’s a combination of a lack of skill and a lack of discipline/chemistry. That seems like a rotten locker room right now, for whatever reason. I don’t know if it’s the rumored frat row antics of Carter, Richards and co., Pronger being too strong a personality to not be captain, or the stink Emery seems to carry around with him. They’re just not playing smart and as a group. I think they could turn around and make the playoffs, but I don’t expect to see a Boudreau/Bylsma-style supernova in the second half over there this year.

It’s also tough when your top goalies are hurt and you are too capped out to do anything about it, but their problem right now is that they can’t score goals.

In professional American football, the Heidi Game (often referred to, facetiously, as the “Heidi Bowl”) refers to a famous American Football League (AFL) game between the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders, played on November 17, 1968 in Oakland, California. This game is memorable largely because the NBC television network terminated the broadcast in the Eastern and Central time zones with 65 seconds left to play in the game in favor of broadcasting a pre-scheduled two-hour airing of Heidi, a new made-for-TV version of the classic children’s story. (The telecast included commercial breaks; the actual film ran 104 minutes.)

With the Jets leading 32-29 with only 65 seconds left in the game, NBC executives attempted to reach their broadcast operations unit to extend coverage of the game but were unable to reach them in time to delay the cutover or reinstate coverage before the game ended. In the meantime, the Raiders came back and scored 14 points, winning 43-32. As a result, no fan following the game on TV was able to see Oakland’s comeback live. The complaints to the network indicated a new height of popularity for the game in the United States.

I think the Flyers problems go far deeper than having a coach whose system doesn’t work for the team he has/having a coach who isn’t respected by the team (Caps/Pens respectively)

Here is how bad it is for the Flyers. They have five players who command $34.2 million of the salary cap… through 2012-2013 (Briere, Richards, Hartnell, Timonen, Pronger). Three of them — Briere, Richards and Pronger — have deals out at least through 2015.
