Another example of why I dropped my THN subscription a couple of years ago. I’m convinced Proteau may be the only guy on staff who even watches games.
A man gotta have a code
Proteau’s pretty good, but Justin Bourne’s not to be missed in my opinion.

I wish THN still did the newspaper format (if they do and I missed it, please let me know).

I can’t find it when I try to manage my account. Just googled a fews forums that claim the newspaper isn’t there anymore. Do you have an account? Help if you can, the magazine sucks.

Nah, just the regular hard copy format, they gave me a free subscription to that digital one on the zinio reader, but I never use it.

We’re told the “100 most powerful peeps in hockey” issue (with Uncle Ted at #11 and AO at #2) hits newsstands on 21 December, which would be…tomorrow.

Dunno, but prolly Bettman.

e-version here! Decent-ish article on Ovie (nothing groundbreaking). ted is the highest ranked owner (and wasn’t ranked last year). Bettman is 1, Crosby 4. Thought maybe GMGM should crack it, but he didn’t. Also check out the “top stories of the decade” for each team. The Caps are page 41

Good game by Neuvy controlling rebounds (or, rather, not allowing them), not counting the second goal of course, which really can’t be blamed on him for a 2-0 Oilers breakaway. It was a night and day difference from his last start. Nothing flashy, just solid.
Agreed – quiet, solid performance.

“Sources say” that if Atlanta decides to deal Ilya Kovalchuk, the Caps will be among the half-dozen teams most aggressively pursuing a trade for the Russian superstar.
And who would we be sending back Atlanta’s way? Semin + _________?
That has to be one of the most unlikely trades to take place. Let’s ignore for a moment whether the Caps would actually go after him. Atlanta’s going to be in the playoffs. Will they still be if they trade him? Maybe. But why on earth would they trade him in division, never mind in conference?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I’m not sold on Atlanta being in the playoffs until it’s mathematically impossible for them not to be.
That said, word has always been that the issue with Ilya is whether or not he thinks Atlanta can build a winner. Right now, he has to be feeling pretty good about that. Add that in with the fact that the Thrashers are ready to break the bank to keep him, and I think he re-signs.
by David M. Getz on Dec 20, 2009 11:10 AM EST up reply actions
I agree on all counts. I was simply going with the ridiculous rumor mongering to counter argue why it wouldn’t happen. I guess Kovalchuk is waiting as long as possible to see where the team is at in February before he signs.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
while it would be nice, i don’t see us getting Kovie (Ovie & Kovie — hmmm….that’s another story) for our team.
Why do we need another superstar? We have a very deep team this year. Lots of people have been saying that this year. We don’t have room for another superstar, not to mention the salary he would require. I love Kovie’s skills, but I don’t see him making it to our team.
Lets work with what we have and go with that.

Atlanta: we’d like Semin, Carlson, Alzner, and your first round picks for 2010, 2011, and 2012
Washington: Bouchard, Godfrey, Dubuc (you can add your “no pregame soccer” clause), Finley (keep him away from garden equipment), and a sixth round pick in 2013.
Atlanta…OK, Semin, Fleischmann, Fehr, Neuvirth, and a first rounder in 2010.
Washington…Perreault, Gustafsson, Morrisonn, Dan Dunn, and a third rounder in 2011.
Atlanta… Semin, Holtby, Johansson, Orlov, and tww second round picks
Washington… Osala, Andrew Gordon, Kugryshev, and two second round picks
Atlanta…Semin, Osala, Kugryshev, Orlov, and two second round picks
Glen Sather…I’ll give you Manhattan!

That would be very interesting deal from a logistical standpoint. Sather trades Steinbrenner’s assets to the Thrashers for Kovalchuk. So would that mean the NY Yankees would officially “own” Kovalchuk but lend him to the Rangers for the hockey season?
Of source, we remember the original deal for Manhattan. The Indians there traded the Island to the US for stuff.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Bad, bad deal for the Caps. Moving an elite offensive defenseman who’s locked up for several years at a good price and prospects for two months of Kovalchuk? That almost certainly hurts the Capitals long term. Heck, it probably hurts them this year since defense is a position they need to upgrade, no one where they can stand to give up quality.
by David M. Getz on Dec 20, 2009 1:56 PM EST up reply actions
It wouldn’t be a good deal unless we were assured we could resign Kovalchuk, as with the Pronger to Philly trade. And I think we’re a better 5 on 5 team without Mike Green. Yes, he would be missed on the PP, but he also makes colossally bad mistakes game-in and game-out. I don’t want a risk-reward defenseman come the playoffs. I think Mike Green is the least mature of the young guns, and it’ll be a few more years before he’s tough enough mentally.
If we got Kovalchuk, we’d have the captian of team Russia. He’d make Ovechkin and Semin better. Heck, maybe he could even motivate Semin into some consistent play.
And I think we’re a better 5 on 5 team without Mike Green.
The data, be it plus-minus, behindthenet.ca stats, or Ryder’s analytical analysis of last season say otherwise. He’s not an elite defensive defenseman, but he does more good than bad, by a pretty wide margin.

From Corey:
There are plenty of Caps fans who love Semin (and there are those that don’t). There is no doubting his sensational talent. The question is not “Is Alexander Semin a great player?” The REAL question is “Should a team with Stanley Cup aspirations feel comfortable with giving Alexander Semin a $30 million contract?”
The REAL question is what do you get in return in a trade or otherwise for your money? (I would note that you could probably get a really good shrink, even an imported on, for a lot less $$ – maybe that’s the solution for Semin . . .)
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – my money’s on Semin signing a one-year deal and everyone revisiting his long-term prospects next season.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That might be right, and would fit with the “on the fence” “if only” “maybe next year” feelings which dominate when it comes to Semin. It goes without saying that Semin’s and the Cap’s performances in the playoffs will go a long way toward dictating what happens.
And therein lies a bit of the rub – his price will only go up with a strong playoff performance, and may not come down with a poor one (i.e. someone will pay him regardless). Locking him up now locks in a potentially lower price. This is why I think it ends up a one-year deal – might be a higher salary than a long-term deal would be, but it’s safer.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It’s interesting . . . one of the reasons we all love hockey (and the Caps) so much I suspect is that the players are so much more “down to earth” (that’s shorthand for what we all know to be the case) than those in the other major sports. Similarly, there are far, far fewer examples of players who have all the talent necessary to be a star or even superstar, but fail to reach that level because they’re “head cases” (more shorthand). We may (or may not) have one of the few . . .
Semin for Marek Svatos and Scott Hannan and a draft pick.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
What kind of draft pick? Svatos is ridiculously injury prone. He’s got worse shoulders than Eric Fehr at this point in his career. Do. Not. Want.

I’m supposed to have it, i had it a few weeks ago, but like boutros said last night, it hasn’t been working in arlington lately
I’m watching the game now, but I can’t keep it up at work past 1pm because we need it for the NFL games. boo.
You know NHLN was on a free preview a few weeks ago. Maybe that’s why some of you had it, and then suddenly didn’t. I know it’s supposed to be free on the second or third tier of digital cable with comcast.
Comcast was clueless about it when I called last night. I have a substantial digital package, and I’ve gotten it since its debut, so there’s no reason for it to fall off now.
I could have been equipment manager, but nooooo!
Same here, and I still get NFL network , MLB TV, and the NBA Channel so it makes no sense for NHL network to not be in the same package
Well I know NFL and MLB are free no matter what package you have. NBA and NHL are supposed to be on the same tier. Leave it up to Comcast to screw it all up
In arlington NHL network has been moved to the sports package along with fox soccer, cbs college sports, and fox college sports, but they left NBA tv in the regular top tier
Not in Baltimore. NHLNet, NBA and CBS college sports are off the sports package, along with the NFL. The original contracts for the MLBNet were made so that it would never be on special packaging, so that doesn’t count.
I understand the Thrashers have a history of trading away their star players, but why would ATL trade the face of their franchise?! It hasn’t exactly worked out for them in the past.
"My face is my mask."

I like (I think it’s European icing rules) where if it looks like there’s a tight race, they let it go, but if not, they blow it dead.
Familiar Rapports: Bald Pollack, F&B, Gould Old Days.
Lobbies: Osala, Perreault, Erskine, Pothier, Neuvirth, Flash.
Fan of: Mean Lars Backstrom, Line Mashing, Cake.
Letting it play when there’s a close race defeats the purpose of Cherry’s argument for no-touch icing. And he’ll never argue for anything European.

by Steckel Me Elmo on Dec 20, 2009 4:21 PM EST up reply actions
Exactly. The close races are when people are hurt. You could make it a penalty to initiate contact on an icing play but that’s just one more subjective call for refs to blow.

I like the idea of making it lacrosse style, where the call is made based on which player is closest when the puck crosses the red line. You still get skaters going all out to get the puck, but you don’t get the Dman getting run by a forechecker.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
by Killer_Carlson on Dec 20, 2009 11:52 PM EST up reply actions
You could do that but I still think you need to outlaw playing the man on the chase. Even if the forechecker is closer, hence no icing, I don’t think you can let the D just chase him to the end boards and try to kill him. Maybe require the D to pull up to a full (or almost full) stop before initiating body contact.

by Fehr and Balanced on Dec 21, 2009 11:42 AM EST up reply actions
That’s true, but I think this rule would prevent the majority of the icing related injuries. How often do you see a forechecker beat the D to the puck and get creamed compared to the D getting run trying to touch up?

I just thought he fell down. I just bumped him and he falls down. I thought it was a dive. I said that to the ref and I slammed the door and he gave me two more. It is what it is. If he (Burrows) wants to make the ref look like a fool, then he can.
No matter how accurate his assessment of Burrows is, Poti is in serious denial if he thinks Burrows was the one that showed up the ref. I don’t get it. Makes me think back to the PHI game earlier in the year when BB said that one of Erskine/Poti knew they played poorly, and one thought they were fine. The more I think about it the more I think Poti was the guy that thought he was fine.

Based on the gamesheet, Ima guessing Beags first star, Carlson second star, MP third star.
ALEX, FЯEE
You got two out of three. Not bad. #3 = Holtby.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Stinrays haven’t missed him either. Thirteen straight wins for them.
Sheesh.
Also, Matty gets a star every game from me. :)
ALEX, FЯEE
Depends.
Depends on Boyd Gordon’s back, and Kyle Wilson’s progress.
BB was pretty quick to bench Kyle, but I don’t know how much to read into that.
ALEX, FЯEE
Well then.
The question then becomes, does Coach keep Brooksie at 3C while Gordo conditions, or does Matty get a call right about Tuesday afternoon?
ALEX, FЯEE
how much?

don’t know, it’s a funny mental image to have a whole living room of inflatable nhl furniture though!

This is totally where my mind went reading this thread and I was trying not to go there. Thank god for the rest of you…
Someone needs to photoshop Laich’s head on to the Antonio Banderas doll from South Park.

I’m debating bookmarking this for use in a Pens GDT if Laich scores.

I don’t know how I would deal with that from a cat.

Cat poop ain’t nothing, man. Just let it dry and pick it up. Good to go. Cat urine is what can ruin a home. Trust me, I know. It is physically impossible to get rid of the smell once it has set in something.

You know what would make this completely awesome? Being able to order a name and number on the back of it. You could have a Laich 21 sitting in the middle of the room.

You could have a Laich 21 sitting in the middle of the room.

Kovalchuk can NOT go to New Jersey. I’m not prepared for them to win a Stanley Cup.

I really don’t see them getting past Pitt or Buffalo. Buffalo is practically a mirror with a better goalie and Pittsburgh how you beat the trap – quick outlet passes, dump it into the zone and forecheck like crazy without getting too cute.

yeah. I saw that in the episode description. Is it something I’m just too young to have heard of?

So Old Greg(g) is a dangerous hermaphrodite gay manfish with a mangina that lights up. That makes perfect sense.

I have a new hockey crush. NHL on the Fly just interviewed Shane Doan on the occasion of his 1,000th NHL game. What an awesome guy! He was a fantastic interview, and then they showed some of his career stuff. Every hockey player ought to be laich him. Or maybe most.
ALEX, FЯEE
Yes. I love Shane. Definitely one of my favorite non-Caps.

That is funny because most people here in PHX consider him a great guy, a good player, but a boring interview. I’ll see him in person tomorrow night as my wife and I are going to see them play C-Bus.
A man gotta have a code
Crush Columbus, you mean. I’m a big Phoenix fan today. Though it also sounds like they’re running at least a modified trap defense with new coach Tippett. Boo.
His interview was refreshing because I’m kinda maxed out on Oviemania and Ovieinterviews after this weekend.
At any rate, 1,000 games with the same organ-i-zation speaks highly for him, and I’ll pay closer attention to the ’Yotes now.
