Washington Capitals 10 Greatest Games, on video soon(?)
I've been told that Warner Home Video will be releasing the Caps' 10 Greatest Games collection on DVD on March 23, and I feel slightly uneasy about such a release. Why? Simply put, while similarly released collections have games that should have been included and weren't, I feel like such a release for this team, right now, would be unnecessary.
If nothing else, let's go through an exercise of the 10 greatest games in Capital history. Warner traditionally doesn't include team losses on the team it honors on this set, so that automatically rules out the Islander and Penguin 4OT games as being, well, "great." So where do we go from there, for my money, and in no random order, I'd be happy seeing these on a set:
- Game 7 4/16/88 vs. Philadelphia Flyers (Dale Hunter. 'Nuff Said.)
- Game 6 ECF 6/4/98 vs. Buffalo Sabres (the Conference Finals clincher from Joe Juneau)
- Game 2 ECSF 5/4/09 vs. Pittburgh Penguins (hat tricks from Alex Ovechkin and Sid Crosby)
- Game 6 PDF 4/27/90 vs. Rangers (John Druce's OT winner)
- 1/31/08 vs. Habs (Alex Ovechkin's 4 goals and broken nose in the win)
- Game 1 ECQF 4/11/08 vs. Flyers (1st playoff game/win in years)
- 3/12/08 vs. Flames (Olaf Kolzig's 300th win)
- 2/3/96 vs. Islanders (Peter Bondra gets 4 against Tommy Soderstrom in a 6-5 win)
And I run out of gas. Honestly that last one's a reach also. But other existing compilations are from teams that have, you know, won something (Habs, Rangers, Oilers, etc.). So with this pending release, regardless of how you vote, what would your Top 10 be?

Perhaps more of a great individual effort than a great game, but I’d maybe throw in Jan. 31, 2008 vs. the Habs where Ovechkin scored 4 goals, 1 assist, the GWG, and had a broken nose.
I think the difficulty of assembling the list suggests that this is not a good idea. Besides, I like to think some of the top 10 games in franchise history are yet to happen.

Eff me. I should have read the list one more time before posting. My bad.

I’ve only been a caps fan for a little of 10 years now, so I don’t have the history… but I’m also one that has trouble enjoying past games once the tension of not knowing the outcome is gone. I know to some people its nearly sacrilege to say, but old “great” games for me is… meh.
DC, where Hockey is a baffling ordeal.
I agree it’s definitely not the same, but if you’re reliving a championship for your team it never gets old. I’ll stop and watch a Steelers SB victory any time I pass it. I’m sure other people here who have teams that have won something probably do the same. So until we have that memory to reference I say no.
Opinions of yours I don't care about: Politics, Religion, Ovechkin.
I’d vote for Game 2 of the 98 ECF as well. A home OT win, was the game where Hasek threw his blocker, and was the loudest I’d ever heard the then-MCI Center until the Caps’ recent resurgence.
I generally agree this would be unnecessary, but I’d buy it.
April 7, 1983 — Caps’ first ever playoff victory, against the Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders
And we gotta throw in one of Jim Carey’s amazing 9 shutouts in 95-96. Maybe the Caps’ 2-0 victory on March 2, 1996 — Carey stopped 28 shots including 4 from Ray Bourque and beat Bill Ranford and Adam Oates (oh the irony) on the strength of goals from Craig Berube and Joe Juneau to defeat the team he’d be traded to the following year.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
Probably not...
I mean, I’d still buy it, but I think we should include Game 6 of the Pens series last year with Stecks’ OT winner where the Igloo fell SILENT. I’d probably vote for the double-hat trick game over that, though, if I had to pick one…
What about either of the 12-2 wins over Quebec or Florida? Or the 10-2 win over Boston.
Would also add the 9-6 win over the Devils in Terry Murray’s head coaching debut. 6-5 comeback win against Ottawa in 2002. Or as has been mentioned recently, the first win over Philly – 6-0 Palmateer shutout.
Blowouts are awesome in person, but boring on video.
