Japers' Rink Pick Up Game
So I played again tonight, and barring waking up in a near-crippled state I'd say I'm good to go. The way I see it there are two ways we can go about this from here. We can pick a date that works, then find a rink to suit that. Or we can pick a rink, then find an available date. Let's hash it out in the comments. I figure we need 20-30 skaters and 2-4 goalies. Here are the rink prices I have so we can rule out any rinks that are non-starters.
Rockville Ice Arena: $300/hr plus tax
Ashburn: 300/hr plus tax but could be flexible on off hours
KCI: 335/hr; 502.50 for a 90 minute slot
Cabin John: 175/hr
Fairfax: 335/hr
Piney Orchard: 330/hr
Laurel: 325/hr; 536.50 for 80 minutes on ice
Bowie: 230/hr but limited availability; 287.50 for 1 hour on ice

F&B doin a lot of heavy liftin this week.
I’m for KCI cause the price is reasonable and their ice is the best I’ve skated on locally. But, perhaps if you add a poll to the post to see what people’s rink preference is…
DC, where Hockey is a baffling ordeal.
And yes, I realize KCI is most expensive, so by reasonable I mean, not THAT much more than other rinks that are not as nice.

I thought about a poll but I didn’t want people voting before hashing it out. I may edit the post to throw a poll in after all relevant voices are heard.

I won’t be playing, I just want to give F&B a huge “YAY!” for getting back on the ice after his injury.
Thanks. And of course, Rink Rabbits are welcome as well. (And I woke up feeling much better than I even hoped. Literally zero back pain. Quads and shoulders are quite sore though.)

Rockville/Ashburn/Cabin John—nice deal for Cabin John especially, espcially since it’s not a shithole anymore like it used to be. PO=ripoff. I can probably bring a goalie too.

I’m reserving spots for Rink Rats first. If we need goalies after that (and I suspect we don’t) then we’ll recruit outsiders.

I’ll likely be out for now – I don’t have pads yet. But awesome work, F&B, and I’d like to come hang out if nothing else.

Ah HA!! There’s a part of the discussion that is KEY. Beverages afterwards… I imagine it’d be hard to beat Kettler for nightlife options.

Probably, but I don’t know the areas of all the other rinks. I do assume that none of the others have 3 bars downstairs.

KCI also has beers in house for those watching.

Yeah. Not sure how many people are going to be interested in that, but KCI makes it much more fun for them.

Get your gear for Xmas (or Hanukkah if you are in the Tribe). There is only a tiny window that we can get it done between my finals and Xmas so it’s looking like the week after Xmas or the week after new years.

I’m hoping to get some – not sure I’ll get a full set. And I haven’t played goalie in years, but it’d be fun fun fun. I’ll see what I can do.

I’d go for player gear, but my parents bought me skates custom order for my huge size 15 skates, and I only have size 12 skater skates that kill my feet.
I also prefer playing goalie.

Another question – will there be a post-game? Some locker rooms and parking lots are anti-post-game.
I’d hope so but part of that depends where we play and what the alcohol policy is (and weather).

Rockville and Cabin John are best for me. I can probably do anything though. PO is a crap rink…. played there a couple weeks ago and almost broke my ankle on ruts. Any ideas for dates?
Fehr is fair, but I like Laich
Probably the week before or after new years.

Also if I could shotty a goalie spot it’d be ballin’.
As far as alcohol policies, to the best of my knowledge Rockville is pretty lenient in the locker room as long as you clean up after yourself. It may be different recently though. Cabin John however is strictly against it.
Kettler is somewhere in the middle. They have a no-alcohol policy, and get pissy if you leave the cans in the garbage, but if you leave no evidence they don’t complain.

I’d like to play goal. I’ll play player if there are already two goalies though because I hate sharing a net.
I’m up for anywhere but Bowie.

Good for the flexibility, selfish bastard. Also, I know you goalies are spoiled through youth but I think it’s only fair for the goalies to pitch in on the ice slot for this.

I’ll never forget watching a guy park in the handicap spot then grab his goalie gear from the trunk and walking up to the rink. He had a valid decal, but come on.

Half the guys that frequent Mt Vernon do this. Sure they’re old and those hills in the parking lot blow.. but still.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
The guy I saw was a college aged kid. Even less of an excuse. (I later found out he suffered from a serious and terrible medical condition. But if he was recovered enough to play goalie, he was recovered enough to not park in the handicapped spot. The lot was basically empty too because of the time.)

I still think I should get dibs on a net, but whatevs =]
Yeah I wasn’t thinking that anyone would be playing for free. It’s going to be cheap as free anyway.
TWO GAMES ЯEMAINING NOW
You get dibs in net. That’s my executive decision. But I think when we have a date and a place I’m just going to open a FanShot thread for the potential goalies to hash it out, so you can give up your dibs if you want.

Thanks for getting all the info…I had intended to do something similar around the beginning of the season, but got caught up in a bunch of assorted BS that saw my free time drop to practically zero for quite a while. I play goal and can definitely make time for a game…I’m in MD so Ashburn and Fairfax might be a bit of a hike for me, but any of them can work, really. I’ll even wear my practice-worn Brent Johnson sweater!

I’m voting for either Rockville or Laurel. If it’s on a Saturday night, I’m cool with KCI. Bottom of the list are Ashburn and Bowie.
If you’re doing this during a weekday evening, keep in mind how horrendous traffic is around all parts of the region and schedule it perhaps closer to 8 p.m. or after.
I’m also a natural goalie, but can easily skate out, which I’ll probably opt for. Can’t stand a four-goalie pick-up, let alone three.
My participation is a lot more dependent on the day/time than it is the location.

I work normal Mon-Fri hours, and tend to spend the weekday evenings either working out, playing hockey, or doing game design stuff, with my primary focus right now being Alpha Chronicles.
Friday night and any time Saturday are my two easiest times.

A Caps game day is off limits. I think a sunday or saturday afternoon would work well. Everyone is pretty spread out and a weekday game could be hard for some people to make.

Sundays are out because I have men’s league games. I’ll aim for Saturday.

I think that this is very true. Enough folks play in leagues that it will be tough to do during the week. That said it may not be an issue between Christmas and New Years as a lot of rinks have that as a free week.

I guess that’s ideal but I’m just going to ask everyone to bring one white and one darker color (i.e. not yellow) jersey so we can set teams. That’s going to be the hardest part since we have no idea what fair teams would be as of now.

Five minutes of shoot-around, and a little bit of honesty (I’ve played C league ice and college inline) will make it easy enough to split up teams.

Dec. 19 is a late game (in EDM), or is that too early for your window? Dec. 26 and Jan. 9 are 7pm games, so maybe the morning is still a possibility.
(No, I;m not a player, I’m just really hoping to see this happen.)

That’s not too late for me. I was just responding to zephyr saying “not a game day.” I’ll do early for a late game, or I’ll skate at midnight after a 7 pm game. Don’t matter to me.

I just meant home games. If we are playing earlier in the day away games shouldn’t be a problem. Hell it might be welcome that we time the ending a bit before the game so we can watch together.
TWO GAMES ЯEMAINING NOW
How about if we skate after a game? Jan. 2 we are @ LAK at 4 PM EST. We could get ice at 8 or 9 and meet up to watch the game together. If people are down for something like this I think we should do Kettler because we can meet downstairs, watch the game, then go skate, then go downstairs. Dec. 26 is the day after Xmas (thanks captain obvious) and a lot of people will probably not be available (including me). Dec. 19 is a late game @ EDM so we could try to get ice before the game and watch after.

Ok folks, on 12/19 we can’t get on the ice until 9:30, which means we miss the beginning of the EDM game. On 1/2 we can get on the ice at “8 or 9ish” so we won’t miss the game against LAK. I assume this means we want to do 1/2 but I just want to make sure. If anyone has a problem with that (sorry Chockster) speak now or forever hold your piece. I’ll call to confirm this afternoon.
