If you ask the NM folks, they seem to vote “yes” on Green.

I went to the bar across the street from my place in Alexandria last night to watch the game. The bar is on the corner at the bottom of a long hill, so I also got to watch cars get halfway up the hill, start spinning their wheels, then reluctantly drive backwards alll the way back down to the intersection. It was hilarious and it went on for three hours.
My ability to post is only surpassed by my ability to pinch pennies.
For those of you who are planning to go anywhere:
The neighborhood roads where I am (western moco) are still terrible. The main roads have been plowed pretty well and have sand sown all over then, but the snow is still coming down hard enough to cover it.
Cars are sliding around and getting stuck, be careful out there.

Cars are getting stuck in the parking lot of my apartment complex, so I’ll echo that sentiment.
I’m disappointed Metro is/will be shut down. I’d like to have gone downtown and taken pictures of the monuments, White House, mall, etc to send to people in Georgia.
I just checked and we’ve got 17" here. My dad who has contacts within Charles Co. Sherriff Dpt. told me that the county has put in a request to MD to be declared a disaster area.
I am close to the river, so I know inland has got more. Thats the way it works here.

More than a foot in Reston…had to go out and shovel while my family stayed cozied up inside.
I have such a lazy family.

I shoveled out again around noon and have gotten about 3-3 1/2 " since then.
Guess it’s better than Edmonton though, eh?

i live in a basement, and all my windows are full of snow, haha – won’t be getting much light down here until it melts!

It’s not looking good for the upcoming week for the whole area.
As long as we’re all safe, have food, power, TP, and adult beverages and a Caps game to look forward to tonight, why not have some fun with it. :D

Not by much; they got a foot yesterday also.

Here in Fairfax, the snow is coming down much harder than it was an hour or two ago. I’ll be staying in, making chili, baking cookies, and maybe subjecting myself to the last couple of eps of Jersey Shore while waiting for the 10pm start.
Ah, to have a fellow Caps fan to get snowed in with (sigh).

At my house we’re already down two bottles of wine since the flakes started falling. Might have had something to do with the fact that I fell asleep in the third period last night.

My cat smacked his head on the window trying to chase snowflakes.
Awesome.
I opened all the blinds to see if my cats would be interested in the snow, but no dice.
I don’t have the brightest cat in the world. He falls in the toilet at least once a month.
I could have been equipment manager, but nooooo!
so, he’s the feline version of Mike Green? Cute to look at, but prone to incredible stupidity?
Fun fact: A popular opinion can still be stupid.
Captain Murphy, obviously
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Mine were not either. I grabbed a handful and put one cat’s paw in it and he freaked out.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
I am dying to throw Murphy into a snow drift to see what he’d do. That’s not going to happen, but I bet it would be funny.
I could have been equipment manager, but nooooo!
I had a cat in high school who was rather special. He always though he wanted to be outside, but as soon as he escaped, panicked and froze. Well, he managed to escape during the 1996 blizzard and DID NOT LIKE SNOW. Really god-awful sounds coming out of the poor cat. Had to dig the poor thing out.
Fun fact: A popular opinion can still be stupid.
Def through both of my cats into the snowdrift outside, Shadow (the smart one) looked at me all pissed off then jumped his way back into the garage. Idiom (not quite as smart) did the shaking paw thing for the whole 5 foot trek back inside…sinking a little deeper each time until he got to the garage. It was quite amusing, then I went back to shoveling….ugh.
This is a “two-shovel” storm, as in, go out in the morning and shovel things out, then go out at dusk to shovel things out again. It might end up being a “three-shovel” storm before it’s over, that is, if I want to actually go anywhere tomorrow.

Just did the first session, wasn’t too bad, but the drifting/wind is annoying to say the least.

On the way home, I saw the front-end loaders from the Brigham-Day asphalt plant on Piney Meetinghouse clearing the snow. You know it’s bad when they’re using industrial equipment to move the snow around.
The roads have mostly been plowed, but the snow is still coming down at 1-2" per hour, so continue to exercise caution – there are still plenty of places where you can spin out if you start going too quickly and visibility is still limited.
Currently warming toes. Mmm…fire.

Jim Kelley
Ack! I just clicked on the SI link and found Kelley clumsily paraphrasing my favorite quote of all time (Shakespeare, no less) in reference to Koci. I couldn’t even be bothered to finish reading that mess.
muir on alex semin
At least if he’s forced to trade him, McPhee can expect a package that matches or exceeds what Boston got for Kessel.
so two 1st rounders, one 2nd rounder + the cap space to sign a UFA winger? i’m listening.
I’d like to know what Muir was inhaling/drinking when he wrote that. If we all know that the KHL beckoning is going to factor in on what Semin is worth, what GM wouldn’t? But if you can snooker one …..
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
But it's Alan Muir
Who is an idiot. And I didn’t read it but it sounds like he’s ignoring the KHL factor.

I read something about you and Colgate — are you a Colgate grad? Our oldest son was accepted there, but when also accepted at W&M, hard to justify the $$$. Great school, though, and beautiful campus with strong sports. Son’s main complaint about W&M . . . the sports, though he plays on the club hockey team and is having fun with it. Good friend of his is a freshman at Colgate.
Semin: my head spins from so much speculation. Will just have to wait it out.
Yeah I’m a Colgate grad. You’re right about all the stuff you said, but you won’t catch a single compliment about the administration from me. At least the uber-PC Harry Potter-esque President is gone. Good riddance.

and from the province:
Luongo sits 9-1 against Ovechkin all time. His GAA in those 10 games is 2.25, his save percentage .935.
so now that’s 10-1, with a better GAA. team canada, take notice.
Completely not related to anything, but am I the only one who sees the Devils as this year’s Bruins? I found Boston so annoying last year because there was just no reason for them to be as good as they were – the Devils have that exact same quality about them.
Hopefully it means that they, too, will flame out in the second round against a lesser opponent. Considering they flamed out in the first last year to one, odds are good.
The New Jersey Devils are the NHL’s version of the Borg. They have no individuality, only the collective.
If you've read this far...seek help.
too far in the future thought but
it was Mitchell and Salo that were assigned to Ovechkin’s line last night. I am pretty sure anyone who can hold Ovi without a shot on goal for two periods has my utmost attention, even when Ovi had a bad night performance wise.
He’s making 3.5M this season and a UFA. Vancouver isn’t going to trade him because they won’t be out of the playoffs (i can only hope) but GMGM had to mark that one up as the best D showing on him to date, wouldn’t you all agree?
Anyone have evidence the other way he’s not worth looking at next year?
Promote the game, it's the NHL, not SCHL
Neuvirth starting
Tweet from Corey indicates Neuvy was first off the ice. Hopefully he’ll be less jittery this time than on his first two outings.
Looks like Laing, Juice and Sloan in, Wilson, ShaMo and Erskine out, based on beat writers’ tweets.
"After the Cold War, the AK-47 became Russia's biggest export. After that came vodka, caviar, and suicidal novelists (and a couple good hockey players)."
If Kyle is out, does that mean Boyd is in at 3C?
I just looked up stats for the Bears last night. In a 3-1 Bears win, Matty Perreault was a minus 1 with only 1 SOG.
ALEX, FЯEE
Not a good stat line, but I’m hesitant to draw too much from it. The AHL is notorious for ridiculous defensive breakdowns by all parties, and from watching MP I think he’s a player who does a lot better when he knows where his teammates are going to be. I’ve never watched him in the AHL but I have a hard time believing he’s a worse player in HER than he is in DC.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Hey, it’s Adopt-a-Greyhound nite @ HER tonight. Maybe they need Adopt-a-Reindeer night instead.

you know what makes for a really awesome snow day? Watching the Flyers postgame show after they lose to the Rags. There’s a whole lot of schadenfreude in my house right now.

I’m more impressed that the Kitties have snuck into 8th.

For all their blather about the Atlantic being the “best” division in the East…kind of interesting to see three teams from the “crappy” Southeast and Northeast in the playoff picture, no?
Frankly, the Atlantic should be substantially tougher than it has been so far. Everyone not named Gaborik or Del Zotto has been substantially underperforming in NY, the Isles are a couple of years away from being a very good team and the Flyers are just imploding. I can’t wrap my head around the Flyers, I just don’t understand how a team with that much talent is so much less than the sum of its parts.

Agreed. I just hope PHI continues to slump until it’s too late. In a perfect world they finish 9th in the east and don’t end up with a great draft pick. Oh wait, it doesn’t matter where they draft. Still don’t want them in the playoffs.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Wait again, did they trade this year’s first to ANA also? Or just last year’s and Sbisa?
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Nice.
Where the hell did that LAK/Jack Johnson trade business come from last year?
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
You mean from last night? That was probably thrown out by Addison in his wine-induced haze. He was probably reading about a Jack Johnson concert in Philly or something.
The East in general is just kind of underwhelming this year, as it was last year. Even with a Cup I’ve never been convinced that the Penguins are as good as people want to make them out to be – the parity in this league is just kind of astounding.
All the more reason why that “SouthLeast” moniker should go by the wayside, as far as I’m concerned. There are a few crappy teams in both conferences (hi there, Carolina) and a few really good teams (woo!) but everyone else…meh.
If the Flyers are less than the sum of their parts, the Pens, last year and so far this year, were greater than the sum of their parts, especially when their blueline was destroyed by injuries. They just…win. Not really sure how that one works.

If the Flyers continue to play this badly, will they be looking to dump people at the trading deadline? Like Briere and Pronger.
They already tried the “Fire the Coach” thing and that clearly didn’t work unlike the Caps of 2007-2008 and last year’s edition of the Pens.
Rocking the Red since 1975
And I was referring to the North East division as the North Least before the season. Who do they have? Toronto who’s bad (but we can’t beat). Montreal who self-destructed and let everyone walk away as a free agent.
Then again, Ottawa’s doing better than last year. Boston has started to do better after their horrible start and Buffalo’s doing well.
Rocking the Red since 1975

I was on the phone for the beginning; when I picked up they were talking about Alzner and whether he was up to stay (consensus: very, very close)
On Schultz: McErlain’s stance was that Schultz is quietly efficient, gets a bad rap sometimes, and is a good value. Keely said he thinks Schultz is a 5-6 but solid for the money.
On Green and the Olympic team: they both hedged their bets and said it depends on what the team’s looking for.
Keely from OFB? So they still aren’t sold on Schultz I guess. I wonder who the 2-4/5 are if Schultz is 5/6. Alzner is here to stay. I really would love to hear what BB thinks is wrong with his game. Right now he looks better to me than almost all of our D, don’t see how you send him down.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Well, Keely was talking about it in the context of “on a Stanley Cup contender”, so…I dunno. But last spring Keely told me he wanted to trade Schultz for a 5th round pick over the summer, so…
Also of note: Keely said he thought Carlson would be up for good in the spring.
Ok. I’m not trying to get on the OFB hatewagon, but that’s why I don’t go there for any sort of hockey analysis. The Caps are pretty damn close to being a contender, if not already; and they aren’t picking up 4 more D to get there. I know I’m asking the wrong person, but has he ever watched Schultz play Malkin? Or payed attention to how GMGM brings along his D ever since Eminger?
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Yeah, see my comment in the GDT. I’m sick of that shit. He even acknowledges that the problem was the inability to get the puck out of the zone. D-Hatch isn’t going to solve that. Juice is physical and utterly worthless at clearing the puck from the zone because he’s slow and has no puck skills. Give me Potsy and Alzner over Juice/Erskine/Hatcher/Foote/whoever any day.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Schultz is dynamite on Gaborik, too. Just as long as it’s not on the rush where Gabbo can get around him with speed – we know that’s 55’s weakness. However, once they get setup in the zone, Schultz plays him as well as anyone I’ve ever seen.

And even if you have a preference for one kind of player over another, you don’t ridiculously under-value a guy just because he doesn’t fit your model. It’s no secret that the skill I prize most is skating, but I wouldn’t give a poor skater away for nothing if he was able to compensate for that deficiency in other ways.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Thanks both of you.
Love to see Karl stay up, he needs games and I don’t think our window closes after this season. Having him up now is going to pay in the spring and down the road further than that.
I don’t think Green is going to make the Olympic team unless he has a ridiculous next few games, like, +3’s across the board and transforms his brainfarts into strokes of genius.
