Good going, NHL Network. ’Cos hockey is for everybody.
I’m continuing to update the WJC Team Canada post – one more scrimmage tonight any they make their final cuts tomorrow.
My WJC Team USA post will go live tomorrow – John Carlson will leave Hershey and report to selection camp for Dec 17-19.
And I’ll have another post soon for the caps’ Euro prospects – Mackan is captaining Team Sweden, and Orlov/Kugryshev aiming for Team Russia.

It was reported earlier that Carlson isn’t attending the camp. I haven’t seen anything new on the topic, but for now, I am assuming he is staying with Hershey through the weekend and joining Team USA before their last scrimmage, which will be on 12/22.
I was pleased to see the 6 prelim games not involving Team USA on the schedule. Looks to me like they are showing a number of the games TSN is broadcasting, which is great. Some of the games simply won’t have an English broadcast and some may conflict with NHL programming already in place, but this is great news.
All 4 USA and Canada games
Sweden 2
Czech Republic 2
Latvia 2
Switzerland 2
Slovakia 2
Finland 1
Russia 1
(obviously double counting some games here)
Good point on the NHL schedule conflict, but considering the NHLN played that woman’s tournament recently, despite it being up against NHL games, I don’t know why that would be dispositive.
I don’t think the English broadcast team would even matter. When the NHL opened in Europe this year at least one Blackhawks game was broadcast without any PxP or color commentary. Center Ice also routinely gives the French RDS feed so it’s not like there has been a whole lot of concern for giving people a broadcast feed they can understand. Maybe it’s a little different for amateurs but as CP2 points out, this is for puckheads so it shouldn’t matter.

At least we get Canada and USA. I’d like a little more but I’ll take what I can get. Can’t wait to get a glimpse of Russia and Sweden.

I’d definitely like a little more. I never get the whole focus on North America by NHL in this situation. Even before NHL net they broadcast games on Center Ice, but it was typically limited to just USA. Only people I know who watch WJC are diehard puckheads. They want to see their team’s prospects regardless of the country they play for. Is it really that much more for the rights to all the games?

Can’t be more for the rights to all the games. And the timing of it doesn’t matter because they are all on the same schedule. You’re completely right about the puckhead/prospect thing. If you have NHLN or CI you are already committed to watching tons of hockey irrespective of national allegiance.

Their listed schedule for the 29th is a bit jacked up.

It looks like they just copied and pasted the schedule from the 26th (which is itself wrong, unless they’re showing the CZE-SWE game on delay while there’s an actual game going)…

Yes, its a cut and paste mistake. Here is a link to the games schedule from the IIHF website.

I know the schedule, just wondering the NHLN broadcast slate.

Ok, I wasn’t sure if you knew it or not. I e-mailed the author about the mistake this morning as I saw it hadn’t been changed. I think we can safely assume the US game against Latvia that day will be on. I suspect they might show the Canada vs Slovakia game as well.

Nice teamwork, gents. Japers’ Rink gets results.

Good work, though I DO wonder why they’re ostensibly showing a game on tape delay when there’s a live game on the 26th.

not only are we getting WJC coverage, we’re getting the one and only GARY THORNE! For US games only, but still. Oh, my winter is brighter with Gary Thorne calling hockey!
Fun fact: A popular opinion can still be stupid.
Any chance on getting Bill Clement to join him?

Ah the good old days. I miss that pairing. No hype, just the game. Clement could be a little boring at times, but he realized that people wanted to watch the game not him. Thorne is an ok baseball announcer, but an above average hockey announcer. He always seemed to me to have more passion in his voice when he did hockey as opposed to Mets/O’s.

Hate Clement and Thorne. Hate.

given that his co-broadcasters bring a lot of passion (Palmer having fits about catchers/pitchers/umpires/everything! I love when he forgets to take his meds), I’m cool with Thorne being a little less passionate.
Fun fact: A popular opinion can still be stupid.
Palmer diatribes are always welcome, especially on days when the O’s are getting killed on the field. I don’t agree with him half the time but for pure entertainment value they are a 9/10.

only thing funnier is the night Rick Dempsey broke into the radio studio during a rain delay and hearing the radio guys go " Ahhhh, it’s Dempsey! I thought you locked the door!" and then Dempsey proceeding to rant for the next hour or so about how players these days don’t understand the value of hard work blah blah blah. I’m pretty sure he may have had a few drinks, too.
