Third Period Open Thread
On the plus side, the Caps have already had their bad period, and the Leafs have had their good period. Logic says the Caps take it in the third... but logic's been wrong before.

Get in here dammit!
Well, Cablevision fucked up my attempt to record the game, so I’m jumping in now without having seen the first two periods? Anyone got a quick rundown? How has Neuvirth been?

Both goalies shaky. Entertaining game. Both coaches won’t be happy. AO, Baxter, Kessel with MONSTER nights.

Sure is quiet here with everyone on a road trip.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Terrible defensive coverage and poor positioning by Neuvirth on that rebound. Caps are getting worked this period.

No a good backcheck by AO.
Neuvirth isn’t helping us.
Why is Laich calling for the puck just to do that? Lame play.

Why is Laich calling for the puck just to do that? Lame play.
He had space to step out and take a better shot, but instead he just rammed a low quality wrap around right into Toskala’s pad. Just another example of Laich’s poor play recently.

He doesn’t need to be calling for the puck on a PP. He’s there to clean up when others shoot, not be the shooter.

I still think they need to show that play and the give and go between Backs and Laich a little bit so everyone doesn’t know 100% of the time the cross ice saucer is coming.

This is why I’m not high on Neuvy….
Varly>Jose>Neurv
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
don’t give up on him yet…I don’t think neuvy is even 21 yet…
B-E-A-R-S Bears, Bears, Bears WHOOOOOO!!
I guess it’s just because Varly has been playing so well. Of course, he’s had the larger NHL opportunity, too. One game every other month, with no practice, doesn’t help a whole lot.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
like I said in the 2nd period thread, Neuvirth only has 17 AHL games + 22 AHL playoff games + 5 NHL games on his resume. Give him a full season with Hershey and let’s see how he does then.
Varly is a freak, and that’s meant as a compliment
That Calder Cup MVP has a lot to do with expectations, too.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
oh I expect big things from Neuvirth but given the small sample size there are going to be some bumps in the road. unfortunately this is one of those bumps.
Varly was pretty hot from the get go, but he had more Russian experience. I think of lot of Neuvy is gitters and youth, so hewill improve, but I always worry when he is in goal.
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
plus, the guy’s going into an away game, in toronto where the fans are crazy when their team is playing well. And tonight, for some reason the leafs are playing well
B-E-A-R-S Bears, Bears, Bears WHOOOOOO!!
And after a travel snafu that took away his practice opportunity this morning.

What has gotten into Toskala that he thinks he can play like a legitimate number one goalie against us lately? I don’t get it.
I miss opening night.

I am so glad the Caps are awesome at the game of hockey.
Also, I’m glad Ovechkin takes ridiculously long shifts. That way he has gas left at the end of the shift to back check. Yup, no negative consequences for staying on the ice that long. None at all.

Great job by the big guns for the Caps just letting Toronto walk right in….go team.
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
Wow, that was some stupendously dumb analysis on HNIC. The guy talks about how Semin has a huge curve which means he can’t do anything on his backhand, and he’s saying this while watching a replay of Semin get a nice backhand shot off on Toskala (he got it up, Toskala just came up with a big save). He finishes up by saying goalies know Semin can’t deke backhand and that he’s not a dangler. Good call.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
Hilarious…Semin has one of the better forehand to backhand moves in the league imo

Neuvy.... Wow
They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.
He’s going down way too early. I bet he gets away with that shit in the AHL because those guys can’t pick corners or hold the puck that extra second. He needs to work on staying on his damn feet.

The league has a goalie that they lend to teams that are playing against the Caps. His name is Vezina.

Well I only saw the third period, and it was tied 3-3 at that point. Toskala did make a nice save on Semin after it was already 5-3, but he certainly wasn’t the reason why Toronto won that period (and thus the game).

No, they shit the bed from the 2nd period on, but Toskala kept them in the game in the first. This could have been over before the intermission with the way the Caps came out.

Meh. 6th game in a week and a half. They just looked gassed. Neuvirth wasn’t good and they ran out of energy. It wasn’t a ton of bad turnovers and mental errors (except for Green’s PIM when it was already over). They needed to be up more after the first and get solid goaltending, and they didn’t.

True. I just hate the Leafs a little more than others, I think (especially one punchable Phil Kessel, ugh) – plus with this loss and the Devils winning tonight, we’re out of first place again. Not that I don’t expect that to happen occasionally for the rest of the year, but I’d like them to stay up there for at least a week…
The Caps are still ahead of the Devils. With the win last night and a Devils loss the Caps got back their 3 pt lead. Now with the opposite happening they are back to being up only 1 pt, but the Devils still have two games in hand.

That was a full 20 minute effort guys.
Neuvy is still young without much top-level experience. With Varley out and Theo playing last night it had to be him tonight.
It was a good game to start him. If you lose you don’t give up points in the division.
If you don't wanna get hit, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!
who cares about points in the division? it’s not like the Caps are realistically gonna have trouble winning the SE

It was a race because we came back from last to make it a race. Don’t think it can’t happen again.

i see your point, but the Caps are a great team this year and the Canes were just an average team that year. if the Caps keep on track, Canes would have to have a ridiculuously amazing run to just catch up.

Look, i love this Caps team. I have since ‘74-’75. I’ve seen this movie before.
I give them nothing till i see a Caps capitan hoist the Stanly Cup.
If you don't wanna get hit, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP!
i’m just saying giving up points in the division shouldn’t matter. they’d have to have a major breakdown to not win the divison. i think conference matters more, because even if we win the division other teams can knock us down to third, making the playoffs harder than they have to be.
by hockeyman33 on Dec 12, 2009 10:18 PM EST up reply actions
well we lost to the Leafs, so clearly that’s 2 points you don’t want to be losing, under that logic.
the only points i really don’t like losing are to teams that actually could push us down, like NJ and Pitt

You can almost count on Pittsburgh beating any bad team. Or so-so team. Besides, they actually have a good goaltender.
Sadly for us, even Vesa Toskala is an improvement over anyone we got. (At least anyone who’s available.)
