Hockey Canada officially opens its 2010 World Juniors Tournament Selection Camp tomorrow, Saturday December 12 in Regina.
The selection camp roster includes two Capitals prospects - scrappy 2009 gold medal winner Stefan Della Rovere (celebrating above) and Swift Current center Cody Eakin.
You can see some scouting reports in the right sidebar here, with a li'l love for SDR in Video #1.
If you're kickin' it in Regina this weekend, here's the schedule. Practices free and open to the public!
All games at the selection camp can be seen live via webcast at hockeycanada.fasthockey.com (Not clear if they are free)
Good luck and bonne chance, SDR and Cody! Canada and the Capitals are counting on you.

Interview with SDR by a guy who is totally STOKED for OHL hockey here:

Team White beat Team Red in its first scrimmage by a score of 3-2.
On the scoreboard for Team White? Stefan Della Rovere and Cody Eakin, each with a goal.

Boom!
With only 5 other returning Vets I think SDR is as close to a lock as you can get without actually being one. Canada loves experienced teams and they lost almost all the guys that have a gold medal to the NHL. I’m interested to see how he does on that “limiting my penalty minutes” thing.
You're the reason that I hate Nova Scotia.
Yeah for some reason the Islanders wouldn’t let Hockey Canada have John Tavares. Buncha meanies.
I will also await the New. Improved! SDR.

If he stays healthy I have big hopes for him. I don’t know if anyone else listened to his interview but he comes off as very mature and committed. He sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders. Sure, he’s probably had some media coaching and knows to say the right things, but listening to how he takes his role as a leader on Barrie (and older team) and Team Canada (lots of leaders) and the way he is approaching this camp made me smile.

The NHL takes note of some of the lineups as Coach Desjardins looks for that ever-elusive “chemistry”.
Physical winger Greg Nemisz was moved onto a trio with his Windsor Spitfires teammates Adam Henrique and Taylor Hall, while an all-Quebec line was formed of Patrice Cormier, Jordan Caron and Philippe Cornet.
Battling winger Stefan Della Rovere was moved onto a line with gifted youngster Tyler Seguin and stocky right-winger Brandon Kozun, while Brandon McMillan joined the duo of Jordan Eberle and Nazem Kadri. Other lines had centre Luke Adam with John McFarland and Louis Leblanc and Brayden Schenn with Gabriel Bourque and Scott Glennie. Cody Eakin is slotted in.
“We moved the lines around a bit to get guys who are familiar with each other together,” said head scout Al Murray. "The biggest thing is to put players with others who can make them more successful so the coaches can see them in their best light.
“There’s a lot still evolving. Try not to read too much into these combinations, but we are working on chemistry things.”
One problem team bosses found in the first intrasquad game in camp on Sunday night was that the defensive players were ahead of the offensive stars, so they are looking for ways to let the skilled players shine a little more.
Murray said that was normal at national team camps. He also praised the players for their commitment to backchecking and blocking the shooting lanes, which are details they’ll need to heed at the world juniors Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Regina and Saskatoon.

Della Rovere and Eakin survive first round of cuts, highly touted 2010 entry draft prospects Brandon Gormley, Nicolas Deslauriers, John McFarland and Tyler Seguin do not.
Today’s scrimmage will be against a team of college players, final cuts made and roster announced tomorrow.

Wow. Did not think Seguin would get cut. I was highly confident that he’d make it. This is great stuff YNC. I may end up looking through it late because I’m still in finals but some of the interviews are really gold.

Same here. Everyone was making it sound like Seguin was almost a lock.

The talk I see is about him being potential #1 pick. I realize given Canada’s normal depth that it takes a guy with special talent to make it before they are drafted, but I thought he was that type of guy. His not making it was a big story on all the Canadian websites. They have taken two 17 year olds each of the last two WJC, and one in the 3 previous to that so its not like it would be some rare occurrence. I see Taylor Hall is still in camp. However, I think the big issue there is one is a center and one is a wing and they are deep at center.

Talk about a player being a top draft pick in the NHL is about the player’s future not the present. Reading reports on Seguin, he’s not ready and I saw as many lists leaving him off as on, if not more. Making a short tournament team like the WJCs is about building a team and selecting the players that are ready now.
Congrats to SDR on making the team again. Eakin will have another try next year.
YNC – As F&B noted, great work on all the links. I’m wondering if a daily WJC fanpost through the end of the tourney might be of interest for the Rink Rats.

I appreciate your appreciation.
I’ll have a post similar to this one for Team USA and a combined post for Team Euro to cover the Russians and Tre Kronor in the next day or so for pre-Tournament discussion.
I’ve no idea if JP and the Mod Squad have any special coverage planned for the tourney itself, which begins on Boxing Day.

Wouldn’t it be best just to have one thread to discuss the WJCs pre tourney instead of multiple ones?
Also, Bears beat writer Tim Leone confirms in print (pre-Caps injuries of course) that Carlson isn’t expected to leave for the WJCs until 12/21. ""Rookie defenseman John Carlson is scheduled to leave the Bears Dec. 21 to join the U.S. World Junior Championship team." www.pennlive.com/bears
Ouch. Cody was serving a penalty for holding when the university all-star team scored the go-ahead goal.
