At least it’s not “week-to-week.”

Hmmm.
“Day-to-day with a sore knee” is perhaps the least informative option available to the club.
I’m actually less hopeful than before, as the closed-mouth stance is rarely indicative of good news.

I think day-to-day with a lower body injury would have been bad. They straight up call this a sore knee. Maybe you’re being a bit too paranoid?

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t they’re not out to get you.
Haha.
Yeah, I’m perhaps overly pessimistic. I hope so. I’m skeptical when it comes to non-report reports, i.e., the report is technically true, but gives very little real information.

I’m sorta with FD here – could be downplaying it to bait Campbell into a short(er) suspension. He went from day-to-day to week-to-week on the last injury, you’ll recall…

So you’re saying after his suspension, he’ll show up for practice – skate for 2 minutes and then be diagnosed for Week to week?
damn – that does make sense….

That was sort of a mystery injury though. Maybe I’m a bit too optimistic.
Today he already skated so he was using his injured limb. The last injury he would skate but without a stick.

by zephyr on Dec 1, 2009 11:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The last injury, though, was an upper body thing, where skating with or without a stick would make a difference to recovery (i.e. if he was using it too much). Skating with or without a stick with a knee injury? Not so big a difference…
by IRockTheRed on Dec 1, 2009 11:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That wasn’t my point. My point was he is already using his injured limb were as last time he didn’t. If his knee was that bad he wouldn’t be on the ice at all.

Cool. Hadn’t looked at that post in a while, and I see where my sig started changing, lol.. I’ll think about putting up a new AO injury post later tonight. I hadn’t intended to be the only one posting links to it, but that’s how it mostly turned out. With any luck this knee ain’t so bad, and can’t generate nearly the amount of speculation that his mystery ‘upper-body strain’ did. Right?

One guy made a great case for a short suspension, though. Ovie makes more money than anybody in the league, so him missing 1 game is equivalent to some donk missing 4 or 5. Interesting way to look at it.

So let’s see, Ovechkin knocks a guy out for three shifts and Laroque knocks a guy out for a month and they both should get the same number of games. OK, that makes perfect sense.

This is precisely the wrong way of looking at things. NO ONE should be arguing for a suspension or a lack of one based on the injuries suffered on the play. Ever.

NO ONE should be arguing for a suspension or a lack of one based on the injuries suffered on the play.
Not to say you’re putting words in my mouth (although you are), but that is partly how the NHL determines its lengths of suspensions. I’m not “arguing” for it to be based on that criteria, I’m just saying that the NHL needs to be consistent when it hands out its suspensions. Laroque got five games partly based on the fact that he caused a serious injury. Gleason was not injured.
by b.orr4 on Dec 1, 2009 2:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I actually like this logic. Does this mean OV will get a “suspension credit” considering he was the one hurt?

Yes. He should be allowed to play extra games. Or for the next two games in which he plays, all of his goals count double.

I asked someone before but I probably didn’t follow up to read an answer – did we determine if suspensions can run concurrent with injuries, or no?
I think Briere was going to miss games with groin/flu on his recent suspension, but that’s a bit different.
by TFG on Dec 1, 2009 12:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, 2 is what it should be. I know you have to suspend him for the misconducts, but seeing as how one was an indisputably horrible call and the other was borderline (as a major + game misconduct), that should factor in along with his record and lack of intent.
I wouldn’t be shocked by anything as high as 5, though.
by grapejoos on Dec 1, 2009 12:08 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Technically
They don’t have to suspend him for the two misconducts, since the two penalties were different in nature (i.e., not both boarding penalties).

Someone with a better memory will probably correct me, but I believe that a couple of years ago, Pierce was carried off the court during a playoff game, only to return later. I think Natty’s suggesting that he was overplaying it for dramatic effect.
I'm trying to work out a deal with a club in Europe
by D'ohboy on Dec 1, 2009 3:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
whoa whoa there.
you’ve got it right that pierce was carried off the court by teammates. he was literally in tears and you could tell from his face that he thought his playoffs were over (that was the year they went on to win the championship).
but i wasn’t implying that AO was playing up his injury. there was no real purpose for either of those guys to overplay their injuries (for pierce, he missed about a quarter of action of one of the year’s biggest games). i think with pierce the general concensus is that he had a lot of pain in his knee and just freaked out. that he assumed the worst himself and sort of panicked. only to be told by doctors in the locker room that he was okay, after which he actually tested his knee, and then came back out and finished the game. i wasn’t really trying to provide commentary at all, except to say that the events are similar (carried off by teammates without putting any weight on the leg, then skating the next day). but it could be suggested that AO’s reaction last night was similar to pierce’s….that maybe he could’ve put pressure on the leg, but had lost his senses to a certain extent?

by Fehr and Balanced on Dec 1, 2009 4:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think it’s an entirely reasonable potential explanation if he’s not hurt that bad. Athletes must fear serious knee injuries like no other, and they must get freaked when they think they just suffered one. I’m kind of amazed if that’s all it was with Ovie, since he so rarely shows any pain, but I could see him getting freaked out in the moment and being overly cautious.
by grapejoos on Dec 1, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And NBA players are sissies.
And yeah, AO showing that much pain was what convinced me that this isn’t some little thing. He fights through pain constantly and for him to not even get up to try to make it to the bench is pretty bad.

Sean Casey partially tore is calf in the world series (or maybe it was the ALCS) and sucked it up an continued to play. It was brutal.

I’m not saying Schilling’s accomplishment was meaningless, but the way that people fawned over him, you’d think he’d turned water into 95 octane unleaded.
What Schilling did is commonplace in the NHL, or even in the NFL.
I'm trying to work out a deal with a club in Europe
by D'ohboy on Dec 1, 2009 4:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I dunno about that. My understanding is that Schilling had a torn tendon sheath and the doctors basically sewed everything together so he could still move it the way he needed and then sent him out there with the wound fresh. Plus it was his right ankle, the one he was pushing off of all game. That’s pretty damn badass, no matter who you are.
I’d rather play a hockey game with a dislocated shoulder than go through that.
by David M. Getz on Dec 1, 2009 4:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the procedure had never been done before. Infamously, the team doc tried it on a cadaver first, told Schilling, “well, this might work, but I haven’t a clue. In fact, it could make it worse!” and Schilling decided he didn’t come all the way to Boston to watch the ALCS (against the Yankees, no less) from the bench. They ended up sewing the tendon, which was sort of just flapping around, to another one, and stitching the sheath to that. That’s just insane.

Bob Baun
From Wikipedia:
“Baun is remembered for his performance in game six of the 1963–64 NHL season Stanley Cup finals against the Detroit Red Wings. On April 23, 1964, having broken his ankle earlier in the game, he returned in overtime and scored the game winning goal. The Leafs won the next game 4–0 to win the best of seven series, and secure their third consecutive league championship.”
Skating. On a broken ankle. In old-ass unsupportive leather skates. This sort of thing is commonplace in hockey. I’m not trying to say that what Schilling did isn’t ballsy, or courageous, or whatever, I’m merely trying to point out that it wouldn’t be considered out of the ordinary for a hockey player…

Injury: wicked bad Charley Horse. I’ve you’ve ever played hockey, chances are you’ve had one and know how it feels. They hurt like hell and can take a while to get over, but they’re not a structural issue. My alternative guess is that he has a badly bruised patella. I’ve also had this, they also hurt like hell and linger forever, but they typically don’t cause lasting structural damage.
Suspension: 1 game, 2 max. Despite his boarding major, Ovie doesn’t have the track record to warrant something longer. His rap sheet isn’t totally clean, but it’s a serious of minor misdemeanors, rather than a couple of felonies. Add in the star treatment and the other player’s apparent lack of injury and I doubt he gets more than two games.

patella injuries are a bitch to get fully heeled, but can be worked through with lots of advil!
I’m wondering if its a mild sprain. The thinking these days is unless is a major sprain, to get walking on it and mobilizing it as quickly as possible. Even major sprains, they want you off crutches as soon as weight can be tolerated.

Indeed, though I have seen Ovie’s mug on the front page of ESPN.com at least once this season. ESPN is definitely following hockey more, for whatever reason. I liked their hockey coverage back when they had it, but the network as a whole has gone downhill since then.

Alex Ovechkin skated for about five minutes here wearing a red track suit this morning. The two-time MVP took some strides, handled the puck a couple of times, then left the ice prior to the team practice.

How am i wrong?? Morally maybe, but under the NHL wheel of discipline there shouldn’t be one at all, because the victim ultimately wasn’t injured. Ovechkin has not been suspended before, even though he was just given a major for boarding and game misconduct the other night. He was only threatened suspension for i quote, “Another bad Boarding Penalty?” but this is kneeing Pen, which as Tarik pointed out, falls under a different category. Second, I think OV getting hurt more then the opposing player is more of a detriment than any Suspension handed out. Conclusions, At most a one game suspension or a team forced sit out for recovery/Point Making. In the end OV, who seems to be fine, will not play Thursady but i bet 98% he plays Saturday.
by CAPFan4Life on Dec 1, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Whatever the length of any suspension, I would bet the house on Ovie not playing in that game due to the injury. I just can’t imagine him being ready to play that quickly based on the hit, being helped off the ice, and gingerly skating earlier, nor can I imagine the Caps letting him play in what is sure to be a very physical game if he’s less than 100%.
by grapejoos on Dec 1, 2009 2:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
He isn’t injured and he has said it is just burised. If he was at all injured no way does he skate this morning. Also i would a 50% Ovechkin is still better than half the NHL.

Where?
If he was at all injured no way does he skate this morning.
Not necessarily. A strain or mild sprain could allow him to still skate. So could a bone bruise.
Also i would a 50% Ovechkin is still better than half the NHL.
True, but no Ovechkin for a few games and a 100% Ovechkin for the rest of the season is better than a 50% Ovechkin for a month.

Long and short of it, because I don’t like getting into it, is that I see Heatley as a murderer. I have met the Snyder family (Good friend of mine is friends with them, and played hockey with him in juniors, or at some point). If you ask me, Heatley belongs in jail. All he got was community service (A joke) and a busted knee. When he came back from injury, he was CHEERED. If Ovechkin got into a car with Tyler Sloan, and heaven forbid Sloan was killed, I wouldn’t want Ovechkin on my team. No amount of talent absolves someone of killing a man.
I didn’t like him before because he could have played for team Germany in international play, and didn’t. But that’s chump change. It’s an old argument, nothing I can say is going to change it, and I’d rather have Todd Bertuzzi, Sid Crosby, Avery, Briere, Hartnell, and Hell, Jagr back before I want Heatley on this team. I’d stop following the Caps if they picked him up. I’m that adamant against him.

Seems to me the appropriate punishment is one to two games. Of course, under the NHL wheel of discipline, there shouldn’t be one at all, because the victim ultimately wasn’t injured at all. But it would make sense to sit him if for no other reason than to make him think a little. Then again, I read his comments where he’s not going to change the way he plays. Well, he’d better, just a little, or the next time the knee injury might not be so minor.

1) Hopefully this incident(and the previous one last month) wake Ovechkin up to the fact that he’s not th super human player he apparently believes he is. He needs to play more in control. As such a suspension of 2 games or so might be a good thing.
2) Sure still be aggressive, but have some restraint and be cognizant that his team needs him to stay healthy. Else his career will follow other great players who’s longevity was cut short by injury
3) Agree with earlier posters that its entirely possible the team is remaining coy about Ovechkin’s ‘injury status’ until the discipline is determined. If he was going to miss a game anyway they’d prefer that go toward the inevitable 2-3 game suspension that he’s likely to get.
4) If they said he’s going to miss a week then the suspension wouldn’t theoretically start until he’s medically cleared to play.

Totally agree, but let’s remember, the dude’s 24. Perceived self-invincibility is par for the course for most guys of that age.

24, makes millions a year, popular across multiple continents….I’d think I’m pretty invincible, too.
by RedBirdie on Dec 1, 2009 3:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, the invincibility thing applies to most young players. That’s why finding those with a maturity at such a young age is so great. Richards I would say, Toews, Crosby more recently, etc.

They are totally hapless. I think we play them something like five more times too, which is nice.
by Kolzilla on Dec 1, 2009 2:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Next time they play Carolina (Dec. 11th), I’d bet there are going to be some fireworks. You know Gleason will go after Ovechkin every chance he gets and Ruutu and Walker (if he’s healthy) and Ward are not above using their sticks. A call-up or two from Hershey might be in order for that game.
by b.orr4 on Dec 1, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Is Carolina actually going to try and play hockey that game, or just take runs at the Caps all night?
by RedBirdie on Dec 1, 2009 2:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well they most likely can’t make the playoffs, so i would take the second option.
by CAPFan4Life on Dec 1, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The latter is my guess, and (if he’s playing) Ovechkin will be gunning just as hard for them too.
Funny, I grabbed tickets for this game a few days ago figuring it would be a snoozer.

I kind of understood how he could have swung his stick in anger and mistakenly hit his keeper. What really got me is that after he hit Vokoun and saw him crumple to the ice, he swung his stick AGAIN unitl it broke and then skated away.

He swung it with one hand and it snapped. Why is that bad? He already wanted to break his stick, right? What about hitting your goalie makes you want to break the stick less? He would only be more pissed.

The problem isn’t finishing the job. The problem is skating away like nothing happened. I don’t give two shits about him breaking the stick, but I did find it odd that he seemed to show absolutely no concern for Vokoun.
You don’t need to be a doctor to realize your goalie is hurt when he is writhing in pain after you just two handed him in the head.

I don’t know what you wanted him to do. To me he looked like a dude that was pissed and in a little shock and trying to hold it together. He walked down the runway to the locker room a couple times, presumably to show his emotions off camera. I have a hard time thinking he didn’t feel bad or understand what happened. You’ve never messed up and then just wanted to ignore it for a minute?

Given that people have oft discussed Ballard in the same tones as Brooks Laich (i.e., “has future captain written all over him”), I think I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. This isn’t exactly Jesse Boulerice we’re talking about here.

A shot of him before he went into the locker room had a brilliant close up of him looking like he was about to be sick to his stomach. I think the second swing happened before he realized what he’d actually hit with the first swing.

After watching OV get booed, being helped off the ice and realizing he received a miscoduct for his hit I am sure a lot of us felt sick. But when it is all said and done the fact that there is a good chance he plays after his suspension is up is almost miraculous.
On the other hand the fact that he did not comment on whether he got an MRI or not makes me worry
