must have. Because other than saturday’s shaky win, Theo’s been shockingly steady, solid, and sometimes downright spectacular.
In the Nylander article, he doesn’t mention Verizon Center among his favorite arenas to play in. Perhaps its been so long he forgot what it feels like.

Or if we get him traded if he doesn’t clear, too. I’d be pretty happy with either outcome.
by DrinkingPartner on Nov 9, 2009 9:54 AM EST up reply actions
Yes, either way I would be very happy. As long as it doesn’t come down to putting him on re-entry and someone picking him up.
by Hammerfists of Doom on Nov 9, 2009 10:10 AM EST up reply actions
Why would you not be happy about that?
"I think the relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post is a real difference from previous years," Redskins general counsel David Donovan said. "But in terms of the way our actual fans are behaving, we don't see any difference."
Because if he is picked up on re-entry waivers, half of his cap hit still counts against the Caps’ salary cap, both this year and next. While it’d be a small boon this year, it’d be a big burden next year.

Yes indeed. With Backstrom and Semin needing contracts that extra $2.4 could come in handy. Although, the way Semin is playing right now he might not get much of a raise.
by Hammerfists of Doom on Nov 9, 2009 10:21 AM EST up reply actions
I figure Nylander’s cap hit will cancel with Backstrom’s raise.

Right, and at least as it stands now, he is still a physical asset on this team despite his lack of playing time. If he is claimed off re-entry, we are pissing away half his cap hit next year for absolutely nothing.

Pat Peake...
He’s coaching 14 year olds….that’s great. I can’t imagine how skates while coaching. I spoke to him at a fan gathering and he said he’s had over 40 surgeries on his feet to recover from that horrible crash into the wall. Peake has great talent, it was a shame he seemed to always end up on the IR….
Let's go Caps!
Perreault reminds me of Peake before the injury. That guy had had great wheels.

I kinda remember Peake as being one of those so-so skater but great hands kind of guys. But it’s been so long I could be way off.
I don’t remember him much as a player either, but he lived across the street from me in Piney Orchard.

Peake would have thrived on the 2nd line in the 90s as Bondra garnered other team’s attention. PP could have been a post-lockout point-a-game player had he stayed healthy. Really too bad he was hurt – it truly stunted the Caps ‘90s growth. It was made wore by the fact that we went through a bad spell after his injury where we couldn’t develop any top-6 forwards internally.
Peake was great on NHL ’94 for me. Him and Andrew Brunette. Mind you, I had to create them as players…

I dunno, going from 17th last year to 21st this year (with Boyd missing more than half of this year’s games) so far would indicate they could use him.

I know we Caps fans like to rag on Mario at every opportunity, but that season was insane. 69-91-160 in only 60 games?! Was that the year he missed time in the middle being treated for Hodgkins, and then came back and willed himself to the scoring title?

To be honest, what Mario season WASN’T insane?
The 69/91/160 in 60 games in 92-93, the 44/87/131 in 64 games in 91-92 and the 50/72/122 in 76 games in 96-97 are Pedro Martinez-esque in their absurdity.
Then after that, the guy takes off 5 years, and comes back with a 35/41/76 in 43 games in 2000-01.

It’s remarkable that he was able to pick right up when he came back to the NHL. I remember being absolutely terrified whenever the Caps played that 2000-2001 Penguins team with all of its firepower. Not a perfect comparison, but this Caps team seems similar in terms of offensive weaponry and style of play.
Wasn't 00-01..

Pretty sure it was this series. Believe Gonchar whiffed on a clearing attempt which led to the GWG on a breakaway(Hrdina?) to end the series. God, that was an awful moment.
The top six forwards on that team, with Lang-Kovalev-Hrdina on the second line, were scary beyond belief.
Ah. Thanks.
Those things all run together after a while. Kinda makes me savor guys like Garry Valk and David Volek, because without them, Pens fans would be even more annoying.

He put up 85/114/199 in 76 games in 88-89 at 23. That also included 31 PP goals, and 13 short handed goals. His shooting % that year was 27.2 on 313 shots.
I think it would be safe to say that he’s probably the greatest pure goal scorer that’s ever played this game.

His latest is more interesting:
GM George McPhee declined to discuss the Michael Nylander situation. But said he hopes to have “something to talk about” tomorrow.http://twitter.com/TarikElBashir
So if there was an order of preference:
A) Loan to Europe with said club generously agreeing to compensate the Caps for most of his pro-rated salary.
B) Loan to Europe and basically eating his salary
C) Picked up on re-entry waivers
D) AHL for remainder of 2009 then bought out for 2010 ($1M cap hit in 2010 and 2011)
I’m not going to address a trade (lol) or him retiring (double lol), or him agreeing to play in the A for the next 16 months.

The way I see it I’d rather the $1M hit for two years. If the $2.4M hit for one year prevents the Caps from locking up Backstrom and Semin it doesn’t matter as much that the Caps will have an extra million free in 2011.

1.4M is not going to stop us from signing Semin and Backstrom next year.
Semin might stop us, though.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks.
I’m with K_C. Whether or not that 1.4 is what costs us Semin or Backstrom is semantics. It will cost something. 1 mill is easier to work around for 2 years than the 2.4 is for one year, if we’re talking about maintaining SCF caliber teams.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
I absolutely can envision a scenario in which $1.4 million can prevent the Caps from resigning both of those guys (or some other important piece). That’s not chump change. Just look at the small amounts of cap space that have prevented the Caps from doing things like keeping Bourque or calling up Carlznerson.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
by Killer_Carlson on Nov 9, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions
And I guess any smart GM would like as much money to work with as possible to make the best team possible. This team I think has the talent to go SCF this season, so I’m of the opinion it’s best, if nothing more desirable happens, to stash him in Hershey (or SC?) for 2010-2011. The question is whether he wants to field two actual contenders or one contender and one top-notch contender.
by red army line on Nov 9, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions
Right, but there is no way he is agreeing to stay in the minors until April 2011. And I don’t think the Caps would even feel right doing that. His threshold is probably the minors for 2010 and then a buyout if a transfer agreement can’t be worked out.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks.
Does he have any power to reject a move after his season? I agree that it wouldn’t feel right, but I think that has to be set aside since we’re talking about a team that could realistically capture a Cup in the near future.

If he isn’t going to Europe, let’s say he agreed to go to the minors for the remainder of the year while working on a deal. Semin not a $6 mil player because he’s disappeared without Ovie. Exciting to watch, can’t carry a team. Nice plays once in a while, but not in the same class as franchise guys like Malkin, Ovie, Crosby. More in the Kovalev mold of ‘does it once in a while.’
