According to Tarik The Caps placed Nylander on waivers today. Any idea how thus plays out?

Actually TSN broke that story. Bob McKenzie.

Green, Schultz out tonight for the Caps.

I saw that about Theo. It doesn’t really make sense to me to play the same goalie in back-to-back games. I wonder why he’s in again?

It really doesn’t make sense to me that Theo will be playing “against the Caps”
but that’s another story

Hahahaha, I didn’t even notice.

Theodore and Nylander to Florida?

by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 7, 2009 5:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why doesn’t that make sense?

by TylerG on Nov 7, 2009 5:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Because most NHL teams don’t play their goalie on back-to-backs unless it’s a real stud. Even then they usually don’t do it. Theo isn’t a real stud, and BB has talked about them sharing the time, so it doesn’t make sense to play Theo back-to-back. No need to go ball busting, I’m sure you knew all this and could figure it out on your own.

I’m with you here—he’s earned the start and I’m certain Bruce looked him in the eye before making the decision. I want to see how he looks.

Thank you. I had no idea I was starting such a kerfuffle. Starting JT60 seemed like an eminently reasonable thing to do, especially considering the D could be a mess tonight. (And SV struggles with rebound-control.)

If you had said that it would have avoided everything. But you take an antagonistic and challenging stance when you question people instead of laying it out like that.

Tell me what was antagonistic about this comment: “Why doesn’t that make sense?” Seriously. Nothing antagonistic there. Someone said it didn’t make sense to start Theo tonight and I asked, “Why doesn’t that make sense?” WHERE is the antagonism there? I mean, seriously? Jeezus.

by TylerG on Nov 7, 2009 5:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t need to feel like picking a fight with you. You give everyone plenty of opportunity simply by being an asshole. Honestly, most of the time I don’t even say anything when you’re a dick. So maybe you weren’t being a dick on this one. That doesn’t make my position objectively unreasonable.

Thanks. And I had no intention of making drama. I just asked a simple question, one which seems completely valid. It’s not like the Caps have Vesa Toskala as Option No. 1 or anything. Unreal.

I said I may have misinterpreted your comment. That’s as much as you’re going to get in the way of an apology. In my heart I still think you were being a dick about it but at this point you can say you weren’t and there is no way to know. You don’t respect every commenter here and that is beyond clear. You didn’t say anything about J.P. putting Varlamov as the “probable netminder” did you? Why did it make sense for J.P. to make the assertion but not for one of us anonymous plebes? If you really wanted to have a merit based discussion you would have said something other than “why doesn’t that make sense?” You would have led with your logic about why you think it does make sense to start Theo. And even if you didn’t think Varlamov should start you damn well understand the logic of rotating goalies in a back-to-back. I’d say the rotation on a back-to-back is the default presumption in the NHL and except in exceptional situations teams follow it.

Play it off like you didn’t get called out for picking on gotsparkly (on numerous occasions). You can say I’m a baby, but I don’t think anyone that comes around here regularly would agree with that.

by TylerG on Nov 7, 2009 5:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Your popularity has to do with your history of being disrespectful. I thought that was the angle you were taking on that question. I guess I was wrong. That doesn’t change the fact that you carry a level of attitude that is inappropriate and often offensive. If you want to hide behind being right this time, that’s fine. I’ll just wait until the next time when you clearly are an asshole and call you out with full force. We both know it’s coming. My bad on this one. See you around.

I’d call the decision to start Theo nothing less than stunning. Either something is wrong with Varlamov healthwise or Boudreau has made a major reversal from his pre-season statement that they would split the first 40 or 50 games for no apparent reason.

by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 7, 2009 5:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m surprised too, given the back spasm issues of the last month. At the same time, I know Bruce made damn sure he felt 100%.

by bigonetimer on Nov 7, 2009 5:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You have a history of “Who’s your source!?! Where is a link?!?” I thought it was pretty obvious that Theo starting was counterintuitive. Go ahead, scroll on up and look at who J.P. has as “Probable netminders.” You didn’t lead off with “why would you say that?” Why not? Because it’s J.P. and because it inherently makes sense to start the other goalie on a back-to-back, especially on a team like the Caps that doesn’t have an entrenched number 1. Nobody said Theo isn’t playing well, but playing well isn’t going to get him every start on the season. You watch enough hockey to understand the basic dynamics of a goalie rotation.

Cuz I can’t handle it? I’ll take on all comers, buddy. (I’m not your buddy, pal…) I’ll defend my position and you know it. What I don’t do is pick on comments that make general sense but may not be fleshed out. I know that you understand why it makes sense to start Varlamov today. But Jake didn’t flesh out the argument or provide you with a well-sourced, and vetted link from a journalist that is on your “approved” list.

And you telling me to grow up? That’s rich. I take pride in treating everyone here like an adult and respectfully responding to their comments and arguments. You? You’ve been rebuked by just about every regular here because you get condescending and treat people like they are children, or worse, that they are wasting your time or not worth your presence. Do you really want to go down this road again? Go find an example of me being childish, or an example of someone else telling me to grow up. The D is in flux, SV gives up a ton of rebounds… and at a couple points during the regular season you want your No. 1 guy to get some B2Bs because he’s likely to get one (or two) in the playoffs. FLA isn’t exactly SJS, so yeah, I think it’s a good night to go back to him.

14-9-22 has speed, defense and grit. Knuble looked much better last night and another scorer on that opposite wing should pay dividends.

by bigonetimer on Nov 7, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t have a good answer for ya, but I’ll tell you this – I was thinking last night – now I understand why Kozlov was that round peg that fit. When Kozzy went into the corner or along the boards with someone, he always came away with the puck. He could dance along the sideboards with the puck for a good 10 seconds playing keepaway. Didn’t always result in a chance, but it ate up time, and kept the boys on offense. I thought Knuble would fit that role this year, but he doesn’t. He’s a grinder, but he doesn’t win battles along the boards. There’s no one on the team now who really does. That’s what any line with 19 and 28 needs, or any line with 19 and 8 for that matter. That’s what we’re missing now.

by katzistan on Nov 7, 2009 5:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree with that assessment. Kozlov was good when he wanted to be but invisible far too often. Knuble is real good on the boards but I don’t think he’s being used right. He likes to win the puck, give it to a skill guy, then crash the net. Playing with Laich doesn’t exactly allow him to do that. I’d like to see Laich and Knuble split up and Flash and Semin split up.

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

with the current top 6, I like Morrison/Knuble, so yeah, per bigonetimer, I’d definitely flip flash/laich and do 19/28/21.

by Vinn on Nov 7, 2009 5:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Kozlov was invisible on the score sheet often, but he did have that puck presence that kept the top line on the offense – that’s why even when he wasn’t scoring his +/- was so high. You’re probably right about Knuble, whatever it is, BB hasn’t found the right fit for him, which is a shame.

by katzistan on Nov 7, 2009 5:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Kozlov had a horrendously bad defensive year by the advanced measures we looked at last year and his +/- wasn’t exactly stellar.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

By we, I of course mean JP, DMG and Pepper broke it down for us, the we here commented on their breakdowns.

The relevant comment was “Nylander. Oy.”, followed by, “Did I say Nylander? Kozlov. Oy. Good riddance”. Or something very closely along those lines.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m just callin it as I sees it.

Anyway, my main point is that there’s no one who’s winning battles along the boards for this team – painfully obvious even last night against a weak Panthers team. The team used to score most of its goals on the rush or PP, but it’s gotten even more pronounced this year.

by katzistan on Nov 7, 2009 6:00 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They don’t cycle as much as they should down low, that’s true. However, Semin and Backstrom are both exceptional along the boards, Knuble and Laich can both go dig it out. Saying that we have no one winning board battles is really far-fetched.

This team is dominant at 5on5 this season, which is typically a better metric of playoff success than special teams play. Whatever they’re doing to get that 5on5 ratio, it’s working, be it on the rush or whatever.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Semin is not exceptional along the boards. And if he does weave through 4 guys to thread the puck out of the corner, he invariably hands it away on an indecisive dribbler pass to no one. Seriously, Kozlov was no Gretzky, but he did control the boards, and you could count on him for that.

by katzistan on Nov 7, 2009 6:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This is flatly not true and a gross mischaracterization of what Alex Semin does. If you really think that, you’re simply wrong and if you’re being hyperbolic, you could have picked a better example.

Semin is very good along the boards – his hands and his athleticism help him there. He doesn’t do it with a huge body the way Kozlov did, but I’m feeling pretty good about either along the boards.

Kozlov was horrific last year by most metrics and too expensive for what he brought to the table. There are people winning battles along the boards, did you see the PK Knuble pulled off holding the puck on the boards in the offensive zone by himself for 30 seconds? The PP has been largely ineffective this year, I don’t see how the scoring disparity between ES cycling low and PP/on the rush has gotten worse. Even if they are scoring a lot on the rush, they’re scoring far more than they’re giving up. Anything else?

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 7:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You’re right that Semin does it without being physical. People don’t give him credit because it looks like nothing happened; there is never a “board battle” because he swipes the puck and is gone. It reminds me a lot of how people say Mike Green isn’t physical and doesn’t win battles. If it’s a 50/50 puck Green beats the guy to it and there’s never a “battle” to be had. The times when Green is just getting where with the guy and has to battle are when he starts from further away and is at a disadvantage (which disadvantage may or may not have been his fault to begin with).

Nah, dude was great playing D last night. I like him as a forward too so far but it would be great if we got an D man who’s unquestionably worthy of a top 4 roster spot out of him.

Unless they’re replacing someone who can’t skate at an NHL level, hey?

Although I guess you could say that Q’s regular position is with the Bears. I like the guy, I just wish he were a step faster.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 6:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but if he were a step faster everything changes. I’ll always take the guy that can skate over the guy that can’t, at any position.

Yes it does, which is why I wish he were a step faster and as you recall, that was my original justification for keeping Sloan instead of Laing in the vote.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 6:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah. I wasn’t clear. When I said “changes everything” I didn’t mean respect with his role on this team. I meant “he’d already be an NHL regular somewhere and he wouldn’t have that ‘aww he’s stuck with it and gutted it out and sacrificed so much for just one chance’ factor.” He wouldn’t be here because we know he’s waiver-safe; he wouldn’t be waiver safe. Q wouldn’t be Q if he was a little faster. He’d be something more akin to Bradley.

I was going to make the Bradley comparison with the same point, but 10 is at least 2 steps faster than 53.

Question – if no one claims Nyles, and he gets sent down to Hershey, does his salary continue to count against the cap? I know this has been discussed repeatedly here, but I get lost in all the possibilities.

by katzistan on Nov 7, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If he is assigned to Hershey it won’t count against the cap, but it will count against Ted’s checkbook

by renstar on Nov 7, 2009 5:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I am wondering if Hershey is part of the equation at all. With Nylander’s NMC, could he waive it only for certain movements (i.e., allowing himself to be placed on waivers to facilitate a move to Europe but not subjecting himself to the AHL)? Anyone know?

by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 7, 2009 5:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

In other words, if he waives his NMC to be put on waivers, is he saying “I will go wherever this leads be, be it another NHL team if they claim me, or Hershey/Europe if none do” or “I am allowing myself to be placed on waivers to see what comes from that and I reserve the right to veto a move if I don’t like it”?

by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 7, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

My understanding is that once he’s on waivers, if an NHL team claims him he’s out of here, but he still has to approve a loan to any team outside of the NHL. However, I was badly wrong about how the salary cap worked a couple of days ago, so take that with a generous helping of salt.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 6:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That would’ve been my educated guess too. There’s no way he does anything that subjects himself to Hershey.

AHL rules

So last year Neuvirth got bounced around a lot because once he played one game for HER he couldn’t be loaned to another AHL team. Nyls hasn’t played for HER, and obviously not for the Caps but I don’t think that matters, so does that mean he can be sent to Grand Rapids when he clears? Then he can play there and help them win until a foreign team wants him.

Sure he does, they still lost him and even if he weren’t a Leaf, he’d only have played 2 games.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But they gave him up thinking they could maintain their offense. They thought they would have a solid PP without him, and so did everyone else. He may have turned out to have been more important than they first anticipated but I’m with TL. Savard and Lucic are the only ones I think are an excuse.

by Denleci on Nov 7, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Haha. In seriousness, as much as I would be willing to trade him for the right package, the KHL threat is going to seriously depress his trade value. Between that and keeping Ovie happy, ain’t gonna happen during the season.

I think the Caps would actually have a shot at getting more after the season, since at least the trading partner could work out his new deal and have some security that he won’t bolt.

by grapejoos on Nov 7, 2009 7:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I totally agree with this. It’ll be a Phil Kessel situation. Let anyone bargain with him and if someone reaches a deal then you set the trade package.

Doubtful. The real high end talent will stay in the NHL for the foreseeable future. They’ll keep some young guys for their RFA years by paying them like stars, and they’ll get the aging vets by paying them for stars, but I don’t think they’ll get any of the stars in their prime anytime soon.

I don’t particularly understand why Clark was on that PP instead of MP but you can’t argue with the goal.

Well as far as the PP, Clark took a stupid PIM and hasn’t shown any offensive skill this season. MP has been clever with the puck almost every shift. I guess BB just wanted to go with a “bash down low” PP.

by amkcaps on Nov 7, 2009 8:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He’s not just the guy behind the bench – he’s supposed to be coaching. If these guys can’t just as well w/o AO then wtf kind of “team” is this?

I’m not saying he’s a bad coach – yet – but thinking that NB19, or any other player, is gonna suck until AO gets back just isn’t right.

But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.

by hotdog88gt on Nov 7, 2009 8:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Didnt say he sucked, just that he probably benefits from OV more than anybody. When you have spent the last few seasons playing with the best player in the world, you tend to get used to having him. Without him you just arent as good.

Fehr is fair, but I like Laich

by amkcaps on Nov 7, 2009 8:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would make the semantic argument that the player is as good as he is, but gets better results from higher quality teammates.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would say that AO has been taken for granted. BB perhaps has been especially guilty of that given the ice time he allows AO to have.

I’ve been a proponent, but that is crap.

We got housed at even strength in that period. Our first line has got to want it a little bit more. I hope all that energy that hasn’t (yet?) been expended over the last 48 friggin’ hours comes to the fore this period. Semin, you fucker, get it together: 1 shot and 2 PIMS licks ass.

Hey now, Sloan was not very good on his man in the first goal, he deserves some blame. Our forwards have been the same all game and the other D pairs are plus or even. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the same F line out for all the goals as well.

It’s not the same kind of workout for a goalie and a skater. One of our goalies-turned-men’s-league-skaters could attest to this better than I (I’ve never played goalie) but goalies don’t get to the huff and puff level of tired that skaters normally get, but they are in their stance and putting stress on their muscles consistently the entire game. You really wear out your legs and core doing that for 60 minutes.

More like 30 goal scorer I think. He’s been poking around the net every game since he returned. You add in skill goals that he’ll get and I think BB’s prediction of at least 30 a season is realistic. Of course, the big if is if he plays the way he’s been playing.

I still think he could have had close to 30 last year without the illness and if given a regular center on his line.
