According to Tarik The Caps placed Nylander on waivers today. Any idea how thus plays out?

I’m off to Verizon, folks. My first game of the year; don’t know why I waited so long. Hope to see another 1000+ comment thread again when I get back.

I’m not saying I disagree, I’m just saying that no other ‘obvious’ line combo springs to mind, given the injuries…
I'm trying to work out a deal with a club in Europe
Don’t have a good answer for ya, but I’ll tell you this – I was thinking last night – now I understand why Kozlov was that round peg that fit. When Kozzy went into the corner or along the boards with someone, he always came away with the puck. He could dance along the sideboards with the puck for a good 10 seconds playing keepaway. Didn’t always result in a chance, but it ate up time, and kept the boys on offense. I thought Knuble would fit that role this year, but he doesn’t. He’s a grinder, but he doesn’t win battles along the boards. There’s no one on the team now who really does. That’s what any line with 19 and 28 needs, or any line with 19 and 8 for that matter. That’s what we’re missing now.
I disagree with that assessment. Kozlov was good when he wanted to be but invisible far too often. Knuble is real good on the boards but I don’t think he’s being used right. He likes to win the puck, give it to a skill guy, then crash the net. Playing with Laich doesn’t exactly allow him to do that. I’d like to see Laich and Knuble split up and Flash and Semin split up.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Kozlov was invisible on the score sheet often, but he did have that puck presence that kept the top line on the offense – that’s why even when he wasn’t scoring his +/- was so high. You’re probably right about Knuble, whatever it is, BB hasn’t found the right fit for him, which is a shame.
Kozlov had a horrendously bad defensive year by the advanced measures we looked at last year and his +/- wasn’t exactly stellar.
by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions
By we, I of course mean JP, DMG and Pepper broke it down for us, the we here commented on their breakdowns.
The relevant comment was “Nylander. Oy.”, followed by, “Did I say Nylander? Kozlov. Oy. Good riddance”. Or something very closely along those lines.
by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions
I’m just callin it as I sees it.
Anyway, my main point is that there’s no one who’s winning battles along the boards for this team – painfully obvious even last night against a weak Panthers team. The team used to score most of its goals on the rush or PP, but it’s gotten even more pronounced this year.
They don’t cycle as much as they should down low, that’s true. However, Semin and Backstrom are both exceptional along the boards, Knuble and Laich can both go dig it out. Saying that we have no one winning board battles is really far-fetched.
This team is dominant at 5on5 this season, which is typically a better metric of playoff success than special teams play. Whatever they’re doing to get that 5on5 ratio, it’s working, be it on the rush or whatever.
by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions
Semin is not exceptional along the boards. And if he does weave through 4 guys to thread the puck out of the corner, he invariably hands it away on an indecisive dribbler pass to no one. Seriously, Kozlov was no Gretzky, but he did control the boards, and you could count on him for that.
This is flatly not true and a gross mischaracterization of what Alex Semin does. If you really think that, you’re simply wrong and if you’re being hyperbolic, you could have picked a better example.
Semin is very good along the boards – his hands and his athleticism help him there. He doesn’t do it with a huge body the way Kozlov did, but I’m feeling pretty good about either along the boards.
Kozlov was horrific last year by most metrics and too expensive for what he brought to the table. There are people winning battles along the boards, did you see the PK Knuble pulled off holding the puck on the boards in the offensive zone by himself for 30 seconds? The PP has been largely ineffective this year, I don’t see how the scoring disparity between ES cycling low and PP/on the rush has gotten worse. Even if they are scoring a lot on the rush, they’re scoring far more than they’re giving up. Anything else?
by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 7:01 PM EST up reply actions
You’re right that Semin does it without being physical. People don’t give him credit because it looks like nothing happened; there is never a “board battle” because he swipes the puck and is gone. It reminds me a lot of how people say Mike Green isn’t physical and doesn’t win battles. If it’s a 50/50 puck Green beats the guy to it and there’s never a “battle” to be had. The times when Green is just getting where with the guy and has to battle are when he starts from further away and is at a disadvantage (which disadvantage may or may not have been his fault to begin with).

Nah, dude was great playing D last night. I like him as a forward too so far but it would be great if we got an D man who’s unquestionably worthy of a top 4 roster spot out of him.

Unless they’re replacing someone who can’t skate at an NHL level, hey?
Although I guess you could say that Q’s regular position is with the Bears. I like the guy, I just wish he were a step faster.

Yeah, but if he were a step faster everything changes. I’ll always take the guy that can skate over the guy that can’t, at any position.

Yes it does, which is why I wish he were a step faster and as you recall, that was my original justification for keeping Sloan instead of Laing in the vote.
by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 6:12 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah. I wasn’t clear. When I said “changes everything” I didn’t mean respect with his role on this team. I meant “he’d already be an NHL regular somewhere and he wouldn’t have that ‘aww he’s stuck with it and gutted it out and sacrificed so much for just one chance’ factor.” He wouldn’t be here because we know he’s waiver-safe; he wouldn’t be waiver safe. Q wouldn’t be Q if he was a little faster. He’d be something more akin to Bradley.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
I was going to make the Bradley comparison with the same point, but 10 is at least 2 steps faster than 53.

Question – if no one claims Nyles, and he gets sent down to Hershey, does his salary continue to count against the cap? I know this has been discussed repeatedly here, but I get lost in all the possibilities.
I am wondering if Hershey is part of the equation at all. With Nylander’s NMC, could he waive it only for certain movements (i.e., allowing himself to be placed on waivers to facilitate a move to Europe but not subjecting himself to the AHL)? Anyone know?
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 7, 2009 5:59 PM EST up reply actions
In other words, if he waives his NMC to be put on waivers, is he saying “I will go wherever this leads be, be it another NHL team if they claim me, or Hershey/Europe if none do” or “I am allowing myself to be placed on waivers to see what comes from that and I reserve the right to veto a move if I don’t like it”?
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 7, 2009 6:09 PM EST up reply actions
My understanding is that once he’s on waivers, if an NHL team claims him he’s out of here, but he still has to approve a loan to any team outside of the NHL. However, I was badly wrong about how the salary cap worked a couple of days ago, so take that with a generous helping of salt.
by Knee high to a duck on Nov 7, 2009 6:13 PM EST up reply actions
That would’ve been my educated guess too. There’s no way he does anything that subjects himself to Hershey.

AHL rules
So last year Neuvirth got bounced around a lot because once he played one game for HER he couldn’t be loaned to another AHL team. Nyls hasn’t played for HER, and obviously not for the Caps but I don’t think that matters, so does that mean he can be sent to Grand Rapids when he clears? Then he can play there and help them win until a foreign team wants him.

Haha. In seriousness, as much as I would be willing to trade him for the right package, the KHL threat is going to seriously depress his trade value. Between that and keeping Ovie happy, ain’t gonna happen during the season.
I think the Caps would actually have a shot at getting more after the season, since at least the trading partner could work out his new deal and have some security that he won’t bolt.
I totally agree with this. It’ll be a Phil Kessel situation. Let anyone bargain with him and if someone reaches a deal then you set the trade package.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
On a semi-related note, I’m starting to wonder if the KHL will seriously compete with the NHL in terms of quality. An awful lot of NHLers seem to be migrating that way.
Doubtful. The real high end talent will stay in the NHL for the foreseeable future. They’ll keep some young guys for their RFA years by paying them like stars, and they’ll get the aging vets by paying them for stars, but I don’t think they’ll get any of the stars in their prime anytime soon.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
They can trade him whenever they want. The KHL can’t sign him until after the season but he’s not one of the real stars I was talking about it. He has the talent to be but he’s just not.

But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
He’s not just the guy behind the bench – he’s supposed to be coaching. If these guys can’t just as well w/o AO then wtf kind of “team” is this?
I’m not saying he’s a bad coach – yet – but thinking that NB19, or any other player, is gonna suck until AO gets back just isn’t right.
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
Didnt say he sucked, just that he probably benefits from OV more than anybody. When you have spent the last few seasons playing with the best player in the world, you tend to get used to having him. Without him you just arent as good.
Fehr is fair, but I like Laich
I would make the semantic argument that the player is as good as he is, but gets better results from higher quality teammates.

It’s not the same kind of workout for a goalie and a skater. One of our goalies-turned-men’s-league-skaters could attest to this better than I (I’ve never played goalie) but goalies don’t get to the huff and puff level of tired that skaters normally get, but they are in their stance and putting stress on their muscles consistently the entire game. You really wear out your legs and core doing that for 60 minutes.

More like 30 goal scorer I think. He’s been poking around the net every game since he returned. You add in skill goals that he’ll get and I think BB’s prediction of at least 30 a season is realistic. Of course, the big if is if he plays the way he’s been playing.
I still think he could have had close to 30 last year without the illness and if given a regular center on his line.

No, at least not in the long term. Washington is a strong playoff team without Ovi, but I don’t think they’d seriously contend for the Cup. With Ovi, they are an elite team.
I do think that the team will benefit from having Ovi out of the lineup for an extended period of time, though.
- He’ll be fresher and healthier when he comes back, and after the Olympics that is going to matter.
- It makes the team work and learn how to play hard. I think they’ve been leaning on Ovi to carry them just a little too much, and they’ve been getting away with that because Ovi just is that much of a gamebreaker. Having no Ovi teaches them how to win without him, and it shows them that they can.
This period is an inestimably valuable period for the Caps as a learning experience. Imagine if you will them playing like they are the last few games with Ovi back in the lineup. This team’ll be a frickin’ freight train.
