The Caps’ road whites as the fourth-best jerseys of the decade. Too bad the hometown fans never get to see ’em. [Puck Padre]

This was the part that really resonated with me:

los jerseys blancos aspecto ridículamente mejor que los rojos de casa.

It’s tough because the team’s marketing scheme is all about Rocking the Rojo, but the blanco just looks better. I wish they’d find a way to make the rojos look as good as the blancos.

I really liked it. Now, before I get trounced for not paying respect to the classics. Sure, the Oilers are forever blue/orange. However. What about Blue and Orange makes you think of oil?

The McFarlane jersey was a very good attempt at a new design, it’s too bad he had to do it for such a classic team that nobody would get behind it. It’s got the agressive-leaning logo…there is symbolism in the logo (though, based on what it means, you have to redesign it if you ever get more success) and the colors more accurately represent what the team’s name is.

Plus, the white stripes on the sleeves really made the look when worn.

Yet some are ready to fire the coach and trade away some talent after one loss to a team that plays a style of hockey we have NEVER been successful against: Wild, C-Bus, StL…unfortunately we have to play it 4x vs NJ this year now…

It’s not “because of one loss.” It’s because of “several similar performances over several years.” I suggest you read this.

by Fehr and Balanced on Nov 6, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think you’re oversimplifying the position. The main talent in question is prone to erratic play and silly penalties, and he’s in his 5th year in the league. The other talent are those that we’ve discussed should be traded long before the season started.

The coach is a guy who’s been saying the same thing, over and over, and in changing the message, he’s getting the same response from his club. And it’s his 3rd year in the league. While there has been some evolution, it’s not been what’s desired from either silo.

Don’t get me wrong; I agree that you can’t be overly concerned after playing a Hitchcock/Lemaire doubleheader, but behavior that occurs in November will matter in April (especially if we see NJ again); so that part I understand.

"I'm just doing karate and trying to get females pregnant."

by Bald Pollack on Nov 6, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wish I could dig it up, but we may very well be in a position where we look back on Fedorov’s time here and hate him for the mindset he put the players in this season. Maybe it will work, maybe it won’t, we won’t know until April, but I seem to remember a few choice quotes from 91 last year that indicated his lack of interest in trying as hard as possible until later in the season. How much that rubbed off on our russians and other young’uns we may never know…but in hindsight, we may grow to hate it.

If there’s truth to teams being unable to “turn it on” like a switch, then perhaps we are just now exiting an extended “pre-season” period? Most other major sports spend more time preparing for the season than the NHL. Football is 2-3 months, Baseball is close to 2 months. We know how NBA players feel about practice.

Right now, we’re dumping on a player who, so long as he keeps winning more games for us than he loses, I would much rather have him in our Red/White/Blue than eating Varly’s glove hand alive on another team. Afterall, our frustration with this team should not be just about Semin. We’ve got a team that, early on, is not killing penalties as well as they did last year, nor are they scoring on the PP (hell, they’re barely creating any chances on the PP). These are areas that concern me more than one Russian.

by FFSEnough on Nov 6, 2009 12:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s not a question of whether this team would be better without Semin, of course they wouldn’t. It’s a question of whether this team would be better without Semin and with the assets he brings back in a trade.

Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst

Wish I could dig it up, but we may very well be in a position where we look back on Fedorov’s time here and hate him for the mindset he put the players in this season.

I hate him for taking up $4m in cap space and generally muddying the depth chart more than anything else, but that’s another discussion.

There seems to be two things going on here, so check me if I’m mistaken.

First, I think we all are aware that the behavior isn’t predominantly a Russian one, but I think trading “some talent” as you alluded to earlier as a way to send a message to the general group to cut the crap out does have its merits. You can’t complain about 5 minors a game in the playoffs and then realize that 5 minors a game in November was/is excused. A next step that requires growing pains is going to have to be made, whether it’s this or something else.

Second, when it comes to Semin himself, we’re talking about a guy who is in his fifth year in the league. At what point does he learn that putting his team at a disadvantage hurts the team, all the moreso considering the PK? Is this coach the guy who will change him? Semin has taken an increased number of calls per 60 each year over the last 3, most of which has been under Boudreau, and I’d venture to guess the only thing he’s improved on positively in that time is being more defensively responsible from ‘07-08 to now. Scoring is still there, as is the durability question. But if the way he plays Boudreau’s system causes this, and Boudreau’s got more long-term security than Semin, who goes?

Moreover, Semin’s in a contract year where he’s got one more contract before UFA. If the potential to move an asset for another that has the possibility for more long-term reliance and willingness to cut down on infractions, I’d seriously think about the move, whether it’s now or 4 months from now.

after one loss to a team that plays a style of hockey we have NEVER been successful against: Wild, C-Bus, StL

So should we concede defeat if we end up facing a trapping team in the playoffs? Or should we expect our coach to figure out a way to beat those teams (especially considering the superior talent we have)?

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

by Fehr and Balanced on Nov 6, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, we need to learn how to beat those teams. Kinda why I was surprised to see the lineups the way they were. Trap takes away space. You need guys who are able to create space for your other skill guys… I fully expected to see Semin and Flash on the same line, and let the other 3 lines grind it out.

Maybe, just maybe, BB’s got this mastermind plan to keep everything close to the vest until playoff time. Why give away your secrets before you have to…

Yes, I’m bored as hell at work today. There might be some wild assumptions and strange comments just to give myself something to do.

by FFSEnough on Nov 6, 2009 12:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hockey isn’t like football. You don’t hide your gameplan so other teams don’t know what you are going to do. Beating the trap isn’t a secret. You need guys that are patient and cautious with the puck. They have to be willing to dump the puck in and go win a battle and get it back. They have to realize fancy plays won’t work. It sucks as a player. I’ve played on teams that had to trap and it’s really not that fun. You constantly want to go back to playing actual hockey but you have to remain disciplined and patient. BB needs to instill that in our team now, not when we face a best of 7 against a trap team. Against NJD we still saw drop passes at the blueline, cross ice passes in the neutral zone, and other similar mistakes that just kill you against a trapping team. BB loves offense, and we love the fact that he brought that style to DC, but he needs to at least have this team more capable of playing against the trap, IMO.

Hey, y’know who’s got a real opportunity to shine with Ovechkin out? Alex Semin.

Chances are never better than 50/50 on Le Lapin actually doing so. I pray he proves me wrong.

But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.

Huh? I’d say, over the last three seasons, it’s pretty close to 100%.

If fellow DTV’ers want to stomach Potvin and company, it is in clear HD On 775-1.

Not your fault, but that info seriously put a damper on my day. The only way to combat this atrocity is to drink so much pre-game that I won’t notice how crappy the picture is.

That pile of crap playing on CSN-regular isn’t in HD either, apparently. So it’s just simple Comcast Fail.

A wise man once said:

Making me watch the Caps in standard definition is like forcing me to listen to “OK Computer” in mono – it’s still better than damn near everything else out there, but it can be so much more enjoyable.

"If you're gonna die after 24, might as well jump out at 23:59, no?"

I guess that would be a great analogy if you cared about Radiohead..

So OK Computer in mono : Music :: Trap : Hockey

by Fehr and Balanced on Nov 6, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know about that analogy. OK Computer in mono is still great, it could just be better in stereo, whereas trap hockey almost ruins the experience IMO.

My analogy would be:
OK Computer in MIDI : OK Computer in Stereo :: Trap : Hockey

"If you're gonna die after 24, might as well jump out at 23:59, no?"

How the hell is Michael Nylander not on this list?

by red army line on Nov 6, 2009 2:30 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

why you read that, it make you feel much better about Semin’s $4.6 million and 3 penalties a game, doesn’t it?

by RedBirdie on Nov 6, 2009 2:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He doesn’t normally take 3 penalties a game. (He HAD been pretty good, except for that game and the Detroit game)

by CapsFan75 on Nov 6, 2009 6:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Heh. I think you have to play to make that list.

Nice job by Montreal taking Gomez off the Rangers’ hands. Le idiots.

Well…Sather also thought it was a good idea to pay Donald Brashear 1.5 and 1.3 for the next two years.

They’re paying Redden, Roszival, and Drury a combined 18.5 million next year. Eeeek.

BTW…just for giggles…Luongo’s new contract kicks in next year for a cool 10 million even (just for one year though…goes back to a little over 6 after that)

Ron and Fez 11 to 3

by YvonLabresMoustache on Nov 6, 2009 2:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah but the annual pay out isn’t what’s important; it’s the cap hit. Luongo’s cap hit is high but nowhere near the 10 mill. All those Rags contracts have ridiculous cap hits for their production. Good job Sather.

Yeah but they turned any advantage that could have given them by giving Gaborik that huge contract.

And where’s Dustin Penner on that list?

Dustin Penner has been doing great so far this year (outside of the team-wide recently slump [damn swine flu])

But still, they’ve paid him 4.25 for 37 points last year, and 4.25 the year before that for a sweet 23/24/47 -12

Not to mention getting benched and ripped by his own coach

“He’s not competitive enough or fit enough to help us, so why put him back in? He’s never been fit enough to help us,” Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish told the Sun. "We signed him to be a top-two line player and that’s kind of where it ended. The difference was we thought the contract was a starting point, and he’s viewed it as a finish line.

“It’s been one thing after another. I can’t watch it for – certainly not another two and-a-half year

“Bruce can’t do anything about it,” Laich said. “He sets out a game plan, and it’s up to our players to execute. Maybe it’s time our leaders start putting some pressure on them. But we shouldn’t have to be a team like that, where other teammates have to come down on somebody.”
