Per the Power Play
Which is now being played on NHLN. The top 3 players by average shift length in the league are all Russian.
Kovalchuk
AO
Malkin
The only three guys that average a minute or more. Wonder if they play together in Vancouver.

Rec’d for knowing your limitations and weaknesses.
Can’t say I blame you, hockey is way more interesting than Antitrust Law.
"I think the relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post is a real difference from previous years," Redskins general counsel David Donovan said. "But in terms of the way our actual fans are behaving, we don't see any difference."
And antitrust was one of the more interesting classes, IMO. But that’s not what I have this year. Trusts and Estates is going to be the one that kills me. The other classes I can at least pretend to get interested in enough to study.

Besides, the 1817 Chancery case “Jenkins v. Jenkins’ Hand” firmly established that individual body parts are incompetent to be sued. Although Jenkins was suing his own hand, so the precedential value is somewhat suspect.

Well, on the Kings Bench there was Pepperson v. Wainwright, where Wainwright successfully defended a slander suit with the classic truth defense — “Pepperson really is an ass.” The Court found that Pepperson was not merely one part of the body, but was in fact composed of many organs and limbs (and in a separate finding ruled that Pepperson was not a donkey), but nevertheless held in favor of Wainwright. But since Pepperson was found not to literally be a rectum, I’m not sure that one is applicable either.

Look, winning the Cup is hard. There’s 30 teams trying as hard as they can, and some of them even have competent management!
Besides, I firmly believe this is not the Caps’ year. They still have too much growing to do. And it’d be a shame to put off an idea like this for years.

Didn’t cut my jacket, or my shirt, but when I got back to the hotel that night, had a 6" gash in my back.

Not the best choice of hits given his recent penalties. Afraid this will indeed fuel the fire of dirty player mantra out there. I personally think he plays hard with reckless abandon to win the game and does not intend to play dirty or injure, but this hit does not help me defend my position. At this point I can only hope the injury is not too serious and the suspension is minor. I also hope this does not tarnish his reputation as a hard-hitting, clean player.

I will say, it didn’t look like he stuck out his knee, but it certainly was bent when he hit Gleason.

Watch it in slow mo. I hate to say, but I watched it like 5 times. AO swings to his right, his stick nowhere near the puck, into the Canes player and his knee is pretty far out there. If anyone did that to a Cap, I’d be pissed. Though I realize objectivity is not going to play much of a role on either side of this.
On that note, any news on when Semin is coming back.? Looks like he just got another opportunity to be the teams #1 in AO’s absence.

It was reported in Caps Insider that he may be ready to go on Thursday. Not sure how that is possible, has he even taken a full practice? I just don’t think this team can hang its hat on #28. I’d rather have Knubs back.
Without OV though, I’d take Semin over Knubs. You need an elite winger. I think even if Semin wasn’t 100%, he will be now. We know he wasn’t playing 100% when OV was still out last time around as well.

For each subsequent game misconduct penalty, the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game.
[General includes Charging, Elbowing, etc. etc.]
In regular League games, any player who incurs a total of two (2) game misconduct penalties for stick related infractions, Boarding – Rule 44(b), or Checking from Behind – Rule 48(a), shall be suspended automatically for the next League game of his Team.
(so this is where 2 boarding = suspension)
NOTE 2) When a player has played in 41 consecutive regular League games without being assessed a stickrelated major and a game misconduct according to Rule 27(b) – Major Penalties or Rule 28(f) – Misconduct Penalties, he will have the previous game misconduct penalties removed from his current record. They will remain part of his historical record.
^ this is where the “41 games” TV comment comes into play.
and he just has to be on the roster, and off IR for the suspension to matter – hurt or not.
Just think of how long Ovi was out after the last injury, which he reacted little to. This is much worse.

I don’t, because if Gleason doesn’t duck his chest out of the way, Alex gets him square. While I do think he’ll be suspended for the hit, I don’t think he has the intent.

Depends what you call “taking runs at people”. The haters classify this as him trying to lay a hit on anyone. Playing a physical game doesn’t mean you’re leaping off your feet to lay someone out 4 times a game the way certain other fans make it out to be. Timing a hit that late though and that poorly you’re going to run into problems. A major injury would be worse than any suspension that would get doled out.
by Davethecapsfan on Nov 30, 2009 8:02 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think Ovie tries to be dirty, but it doesn’t seem like anyone else in the league who isn’t a widely-acknowledged good has this many questionable incidents where he injures people with hits.
Not that same exact hit but also the boarding hit on the guy in Tampa last year, (forget his name). It’s not his first questionable hit.
It was Jamie Heward. A former Cap who didn’t put any blame on Ovi for the hit.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mKYT-z5pDU
And yeah, his knee is way out there. The major is deserved, and probably a suspension to go with it. I hope Ovie didn’t do any major damage to himself.
How does he hurt his own knee on that one. Thats what I dont get. You don’t see his knee bend funny or anything. I guess if his foot is locked into the ice at the time of the hit it can be twisted sharply quickly. Both times I hurt my knees where when my foot got caught on astroturf. Though none involved hitting another player in the knee..
It’s just who gets hit more squarely on the knee. They are both going fast and vulnerable. AO took it more squarely, or at a worse angle than Gleason.

I think it was a poor decision by Ovie to lead with the knee but his intent was not to hurt anyone. Gleason cuts back to the middle at the last second, if he continues to the outside there’s no problem
At first I was like, “stupid stupid stupid.” After watching the replay a bunch I think it was stupid, stupid, but happened extremely fast and that if guys are going to try to slip checks like that they need to move their legs before their body.
I’m glad Gleason is OK and I hope Ovi thinks a bit more about where his own knees are after this and the Gonchar episode last season.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Ovie has such a wide base that you have to move a long way to avoid his legs in that little dipsy doo.

I think it’s pretty clear he’s not trying to go knee on knee, but the timing of the hit was late and just a bad decision to try to make that hit in that position. He’ll get a suspension and it’ll be deserved. Although the injury might be worse than any discipline concerns.

The good news is that there’s virtually no chance it’s an ACL tear for Ovie, which is pretty much the only way this would keep him out for the year.
I’m glad to hear that opinion, but what’s the basis? I’m no doctor, just know that knee-on-knees like that can be catastrophic.

Maybe I’m just trying to be optimistic here, but seems like ACL’s generally involve the knee getting twisted in an awkward way. This was just an impact injury.
Admittedly Ovie’s reaction has me even more freaked than the replay of the hit itself. It’s gonna be bad folks, just hope the ACL is ok.
Total Guess but usually ACL would be from outside in. Ovie looked like he banged the inside of the knee. If its ligs I would guess MCL.
From my (very limited) experience with knees (aka 10th grade gym/health), I don’t think the ACL is easily torn due to blunt impact. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s either a deep bruise or a bone break/dislocation.
by thehoagster07 on Nov 30, 2009 8:49 PM EST up reply actions
right MCL partially torn was what Gonch had last year (and this hit looks very smiliar)i- he missed two games (albeit definitely not 100%). I remember hearing on TSN one of the Leafs players is out with a torn MCL, and he’s nearing three weeks. So all in all, not a bad time frame if it’s torn MCL.
Polamalu came back quick. All things considered I’d rather him be more cautious with this one. Reflect on what he’s trying to do and get that sucker healed. Don’t need lingering knee and shoulder injuries.

Obviously he didn’t mean to go knee on knee…he meant to plant him right in the chest but when Gleason started to duck out of the way the reckless part is trying to lean back into Gleason’s turn to still catch him with the hit. That’s where you end up going knee on knee and the out of control play of still trying to lean into the hit is why it was such a bad play.

My bet is that he’s still suspended. The league has taken to much criticism of their disciplinary action lately, and they’ll be looking to show that they aren’t soft on stars.

I agree, a suspension seems inevitable. And kind of irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, given the injury. The dirty player label will definitely stick a little more firmly, and it’s always going to be there.
I’d rather he get suspended and end the wheel of justice than have him not and have to watch Malkin get away with whacking a player with the butt end of his stick again.

On the one hand, who cares what non-Caps fans think? On the other, it would kind of suck if his brilliance were overshadowed by a label like that.
I don’t give a damn about that anymore. Richard swung a stick at a referee once, if I recall correctly, and no one remembers him for that. He plays the game harder and faster than anyone else in the NHL, and fuck off if you have to attach “Dirty” to him because you don’t have anyone who can defend him.

Foppa was “healthy” for a while at the beginning, but he was like a Semin – Ovie hybrid. Played like Ovie, brittle like Semin. His foot/ankle issues have cost him the most time, and those things are genetic.

I actually just conversed with Mile High for a few. Forsberg apparently started out with shoulder injuries, and then his feet gave out on him. Nobody gave me a specific season when he really started getting hurt, but it doesn’t sound like he was Semin-brittle. A lot of bad luck, it sounded like. Did I just hear the Howard Dean scream over the Carolina PA?
"Eloquence, brought to you by a peanut butter, egg and dice sandwich."
I don’t think it was it actually. Dean’s was more of a “YEAAAAGHHH!”, while what I heard was more like a “Whoo-hoo!”, even if the voice was similar. We might be talking about different things though.

I go with Svedka about 99% of the time now because they are the best in their price range (cheap as hell at some costcos), I think it’s good, and only people pretty familiar with vodka can tell it has a harsher aftertaste than some of the super “high-end” vodkas.

The Caps have to lead the league in penalties in the last 5 minutes. No research to prove this but they just have to.
If ever during the next three weeks or so I procrastinate during my studying, I will gladly do that research for you. I have a feeling you’re right.
More interesting I think would be the % of those last-5-minute penalties out of total penalties taken, and in what context – one goal game/en or no en/etc.

I’m trying to get my woman a jersey. What is the deal with the womens jerseys? Are the cut differently or just smaller?
by Knubles and Bits on Nov 30, 2009 10:19 PM EST up reply actions
Cut differently. I got one for Christmas last year… personally when I buy, I just buy a XS Men’s, but the Women’s cut are shorter (hits just above the butt if they fit right) and are “slimming”, sorta. Think like a baby tee vs a guy tee.
Cool thanks.
If you don’t mind me asking. What size in mens would you recommend for a woman 5’9 135?
by Knubles and Bits on Nov 30, 2009 10:23 PM EST up reply actions
Small at the biggest. The men’s jerseys definitely look better, but the women’s jerseys are more flattering to the figure. They look like fake kids’ jerseys, though.
It really depends more on the size of her boobs. There’s no way mine would fit in a XS anything. And I love the women’s jersey. It may look fake, but I’m not drowning in it.
Ok
So maybe I should abandon this gift idea and let her try one on first and get it later.
by Knubles and Bits on Nov 30, 2009 10:28 PM EST up reply actions
if anything, NHL.com has a pretty good size chart, and just try to match it up that way.
You might be better off gifting with a woman’s cut bc it’ll fit better, and then do the ‘try on’ idea with a men’s?
That would be hers. I’d hate to ruin the suprise, but I’d also hate to waste money on something that doesn’t fit.
by Knubles and Bits on Nov 30, 2009 10:32 PM EST up reply actions
check the size chart to make sure that the waist and hips will match (bc I’m pretty sure that’s where mine fits awkwardly), but I think you’re good with a medium :)
She’ll love it.
if it helps, check out the size chart, if i’m not mistaken they tell you how it’s different.
For me personally, and most of my (female) friends, we tend to like the XS Men’s, but I know some women really like the lady’s cut.
She measures 36/27/39 so the size chart makes nothing look like it would fit her well.

Is it really? Mine kinda hangs awkwardly, but it was a gift, so it may just be the wrong size. It looks sort of weird on me.
Knubles and Bits – I’m a really short Asian chick (I barely hit 5’3") so I’m not quite sure I’d give you the right size. I (very) comfortably wear a Mens’ XS though.
yeah, i’m just about 5’3" also, and very petite – i absolutely drown in even an xs mens. i have a medium women’s (they were out of smalls during the last free customization promo) and it’s still big, haha. definitely fits better than the mens though.

Yay for petite women! I wear the XS Men so I can wear stuff underneath when it gets really cold. I fit the womens medium well enough in the bust area, but I think the waist and hips part of it just makes it look sort of awkward. I’m thinking about trying a small the next time I’m home from school.
I don’t know what is more ridiculous with some of your posts — that you’re trying to make Ovechkin blameless in what was another careless hit or that you try and bring Crosby into this.
This has become a regular thing with AO, and he has to start to think about his careless actions on the ice. Maybe after a serious injury, he will.
For a guy with all the talent in the world, he sure can play stupid.
Read the thread, the consensus is that it was a dumb hit.
While you’re at it, get an avatar, stop trying to piss in the gene pool.

Hey D Bag
Why don’t you respond to an actual comment if you are throwing accusations. It seems to me that we’ve been pretty clear that it was a reckless hit and he’s at fault, and that he will and should get suspended. Is there one or two Crosby comments you are cherrypicking? Where is this coming from.
Take your worthless biased opinion elsewhere. You’re trolling with a strawman that hasn’t been asserted.
And no, he’s not Alex Semin.

I just read the thread now, thanks. I didn’t think that responding to posts made 2 hours ago made a lot of sense.
And generalizing and picking on a fanbase that’s down does? If you read the whole thread you know that wasn’t the overwhelming reaction.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Come on. Go back and read it. While there were plenty of rational posts, most were people trying to find every way possible to defend him.
Then, when it looked bad for AO, some people even wanted him to win the “who got hurt more” contest.
Keep in mind that many posts were made in the heat of the moment and without seeing a replay.

Answer: Yes

Well surprisingly the rest of his posts are pretty intelligent. Just showing that he has a definite bias about Ovechkin (which in all fairness most Pens fans, whom are told what to think about every move the Capitals make, do…)

Yea, but coming over here to post that in this thread is obvious trolling. I suspect everyone, like myself, is pretty pissy right now, this troll realizes this and seizes his trolling opportunity.
"And next year it will be ours."
I’m not trolling. I read the entire thread after watching the hit on replay, and wanted to throw my 2 cents in. I didn’t think that responding back when it happened would mean a whole lot, since people aren’t going to go back and look.
I’m a fan of his. Not going to buy a jersey, but the guy’s an incredible talent and is among the 2 or 3 best players in the league. But it was yet another stupid play and it has to stop.
Crosby was a moron for jumping that Panthers player. Agreed. Last time I checked, though, he hasn’t injured anyone.
Go Flyers.

I think your post would have been much better received if you didn’t start a new post on an entire thread to call everyone’s posts ridiculous all at once while also bringing up Crosby — which since you read the entire thread — you know about 1 or 2 people even said anything about.
IS MЯI NOW
I wanted to make a point, so I started a new thread.
I didn’t know that was such a bad thing.
I’m not a Flyers fan — I’m actually a Maple Leafs fan (if that tells you anything) who went to college in Pittsburgh so I follow the Pens and Caps.
Which still doesn’t absolve you for making a gross over-generalization or arguing against a strawman.
Go Flyers.

Mr. Bird got banished tonight for not showing sufficient dismay at losing Ovie. I told him to go watch the damn Wings game somewhere else.
Really? After the injuries they’ve had? Wasn’t he heartbroken over Johan Fucking Franzen? The 4th best player on the team? (At most!)

and heartbroken over Kronwall, too.
I may have been a little bit overly dramatic in my “oh my god, it’s the end of the woooooooooorld!” theatrics when it happened. Really, it was the eyerolling about my proclamations of doom that resulted in the banishment.
Gotta keep him in line.

I knew a gal who tore her ACL and became a long distance hiker. She waited 12 years to get that sucker fixed.
Geez, sounds like one hardly needs that ACL thing. Seems like a little friendly skating should be no problem!
It’s like an appendix. The doctors will take that sucker out and AO will be back in no time.
