I feel dirty about getting a 5 point night from Crosby.   A little bit.  Hunter division keeps getting tighter.

Hunter division keeps getting tighter.

#1 and #2 in the hunter are actually a game further apart!

on monday night of last week, deb locked down wins across all three goalie categories (rinne vs. emery), and i locked down losses across all three goalie categories (steve mason vs. brodeur). 23 sean avery PIMs later, natty’s ice miraculously pulled out a 6-4 victory and expanded their division lead.

by Natty Bumppo on Nov 30, 2009 7:08 AM EST reply actions

While true, division I meant as a whole. It’s a small amount of separation, and went from 18.5 to 15.5 separating 5 teams.

But yeah, Natty’s Ice put some distance between them and Goons.

SSFF with all the trade acquisitions = only team i’m afraid of.

but obviously i’m starting to get concerned about steve mason in net. picking up cam ward a week or two before he’s ready to return (even though kunitz is still IR eligible) should make that clear.

by Natty Bumppo on Nov 30, 2009 7:22 AM EST up reply actions

The Gartner is really heating up, too – that’s going to be fun to watch.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 30, 2009 8:53 AM EST up reply actions

on the face of it, renstar’s team looks really solid. especially with brodeur having a great season and marleau having a career season, i was having a hard time figuring out their poor record. (i do realize vinnyL and vanek have been slumping a bit, but vinny has rebounded and both have pretty decent total points.)

there is some pride in knowing that top-to-bottom, the hunter division doesn’t have any really weak teams.

by Natty Bumppo on Nov 30, 2009 8:58 AM EST up reply actions

It looks like he has Kessel and Souray, both of whom are big producers and have just recently come back. You have to think that squad is going to win some more matchups as the season rolls on.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 30, 2009 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

Souray is killing me right now. My defense is relatively weak and I was counting on him to carry some of that load

by renstar on Nov 30, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

I was feeling pretty weak for a while, but two back to back wins (one pretty big) make me feel pretty good.

marleau was a steal in the 4th round.

What happens to me is I can eke out a lead until the last day of the week, then one player on my opponents team tears it up and i lose. I’d have the worst record in the league if Brodeur wasn’t a regular head-stander

You shush, Kyle. I think I held my own pretty well against the guy running away with the Langway division.

by i12swim on Nov 30, 2009 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

i’d consider a move for bakstrom, but it would heavily depend on what you wanted in return. would also consider a multi-player swap if we couldn’t make a one-for-one work.

really hesitant to give up tavares and all that he brings, and don’t value bakstrom all that highly to be perfect honest. i do think there’s a deal in here somewhere, and obviously i wouldn’t mind taking bogosian off your hands. let me sit down with all the numbers later and get back to you.

i think i’m going to wait it out. at least one more week. mason’s had some nice games recently, they’ve just been interspersed with unbelievably crappy games that kill his overall numbers. plus i have two roster spots devoted to the position. your offer is fair, though.

I’m really reluctant to give up Green, both because he’s one of my favorite players and for his fantasy value. Zetterberg wouldn’t be enough, sorry. But Weber or Campbell might be had for quite a bit less than Green.

It’s not even halfway through the season but KHtD has to be the winner of best in-season GM. (K_C has the inside position on best-drafting GM, with an assist to ESPN auto-rankings.)

by Natty Bumppo on Dec 2, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

next season, i’m drafting two top goalies and trading the better of the two. or maybe i trade both. so bitter and jealous right now. carle could lose his job on the flyers’ PP any day now. completely dependent on pronger. meanwhile he’s gotten what…2 assists and 0 goals in the last 13 games??

I’m with you Natty. Just glad he’s not in my division. Doesn’t matter to me because I have to catch K_C so as long as nobody is gifting him players (besides ESPN) I’m cool.

the only silver lining about your trades is that most of them have been within the division. so it’s not like you’re bringing in talent from outside the hunter. i guess we’ll see if gaborik can stay healthy and i can hold onto the lead down the stretch. should be fun.

by Natty Bumppo on Dec 2, 2009 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

gaborik, btw…on the block. so are seabrook and kubina. want to trade me a stud scoring top-line centerman for an above-average defenseman? i’d love that.

by Natty Bumppo on Dec 2, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

Kane is a wing, Toews is the center.

Seabrook has a lot of added value from getting all that time with Keith. Tempting.

Well fortunately for you there is trouble in Killer Country. AO suspended/injured, Kopitar ran into a giant wall (see, ESPN knew what they were doing), and Pronger with 1 assist in his last 8 games. My support players are doing their jobs, but that’s not enough when your three top guys aren’t producing. Lost last weeks matchup and now am down big so far this week (usually I’m a lock to win ATOI, but even that is in big time jeopardy thanks to AO’s 3 minute night). The Labre Division could get very tight very soon.

I may have to make some moves to supplement my Ken Hollandesque drafting if I’m gonna keep this lead the rest of the season.

knee high to a duck's official trade tally

set sail for fail has “shipped” out:
carey price
miikka kiprusoff
roberto luongo
dustin brown
matt carle
mikael samuelsson

set sail for fail has “docked” the following players in said trades:
sidney crosby
jonathan toews
patrick kane
mark streit

looking for a pattern there? three goalies. two goalies traded to WM. three players picked up for free off waivers (carle, kipper, dustin brown). one player sent BACK to waivers after the trade (price).

correct me if i’m wrong—first time fantasy hockey player—but hot goalies are much more likely to emerge during the season than top-tier forwards. particularly in our league with only one bench spot. any team holding on to two goalies is sacrificing an extra man across all the skating categories, especially when there’s only one goalie category that isn’t a percentage/average. i’ve managed to go 54-34 with steve mason as my goalie the whole season. if he has a good matchup during the week, i sit him the rest of the games and sacrifice total wins in order to compete in GAA and save%. i just picked up cam ward a week before his return. ward, pavelec, nittymaki, price, kipper have all been floating around the waiver wire at different points. meanwhile, only a few guys have been really consistent (brodeur, anderson, miller, MAF?) and those aren’t the names switching teams. WM or someone else that values goalies more than me…can you explain where i’m “missing the boat” here?

by Natty Bumppo on Dec 2, 2009 8:23 PM EST reply actions

i forgot about hartnell in the “players docked” category. so crosby, toews, kane, hartnell, streit.

by Natty Bumppo on Dec 2, 2009 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

MAF has not been consistent. He gets wins with the Pens but his numbers have been all over the map. I don’t think you’re missing the boat, gotta get those scorers in a league like this. There are much better replacement G options than skaters. If a top scorer goes down you pretty much have stale scraps to replace him with.

Opinions of yours I don't care about: Politics, Religion, Ovechkin.

by Rob Parker on Dec 2, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno, I’ve done pretty well on the wire with scorers; I had to waive almost my entire team after autodrafting the last 8 rounds. There are guys to pick up on the wire, but you have to be vigilant; recent example, Huselius.

more brilliant caps-related advice from ESPN’s sean allen (presumably the same guy responsible for rating kopitar and gaborik so low):

If Alex Ovechkin’s knee injury doesn’t turn out to be serious, have a look at Alexandre Giroux for possible deep-league help. He has skated with Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom over the past two games.

in the same column, he suspects chris kunitz is in danger of losing a top-6 spot with pens when he comes back from injury this week or next, and i think he’s crazy. no way does talbot permanently replace kunitz, and no way does kunitz fall to the 4th line.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
