Remember Ron Weber?

Back in their formative years often the most entertaining thing about the Caps was listening to Ron Weber's play by play on WTOP. When the Caps scored a goal, (which before Maruk, Gartner, Ciccarelli and Gustaffson arrived on the scene was not that common an occurrence) he would say "Ain't the beer cold Miss Twiddle!" or something close to that. I was wondering if any of you old timers remember the exact quote. I'd like to use it in my signature as a tribute to Ron.

I usually didn’t listen to Weber much since I was at the game. I would listen to his post game show in the car driving home from the arena. The best quote was always after wins, where he’d say “It’s been a two-point night.”

Let's go Caps!

I remember it as “way to go miss twiddle!!!”

I grew up listening to Ron Weber, he was my hero. When I met him once at the Meadowlands at a Caps away game in the early 90s, it was one of the highlights of my life.

I remember the Miss Twiddle call, but I thought it was something like “How about that, Ms. Twiddle?!”

My friend from Bishkek! Possibly he used both calls, but I’m sure about the “ain’t the beer cold” part because I usually had a cold brewski in my hand when he said it. He was really a big part of the Caps family, known for his rather colorful fashion sense (red, white and blue) as well as his broadcasting skills. I believe until he and the organization parted ways in 1997 he had been to every Caps game since they started in 1974. Do you know if Ron is still with us? Thanks for the link, I’ll check that out.

he was also at a recent chalk talk with Labre and Langway. I could spend hours listening to his stories.

What was amazing was he did the entire broadcast by himself, intermissions and all. That got tricky on some of those long OT playoff games. And he was the ultimate stats guy—he had some kind of number for every situation that came up.

I don't see it...

Ron Weber is basically the reason I developed from merely a Capitals fan into a semi-knowledgeable hockey fan. As a kid, I would lie in bed listening to him call the games on my clock radio (one TV in the house, and it usually wasn’t tuned to the game). When I went to games, I would feel like something was missing because I couldn’t hear him explaining what I was seeing.

I can’t help with your question, but I appreciate the nostalgia.

I shared your appreciation for listening to Ron call the games. Even when the Caps were on TV I’d turn down the sound and listen to his radio play-by-play, just as I did with Sam, Sonny and Frank with the Skins.

I remember when I was a like 5 or 6 years old,(im 16 now) and Ron Weber gave me the media game notes and some of his own notes also. At the time, I had no idea who he was, but my dad later explained to me the legend that he was.

Ain't the beer cold

..was a Chuck Thompson expression — that may be where Weber got it from.

Now, that makes sense! I never listened to Chuck since I wasn’t an O’s fan but I remember during one game Ron explained the origin of the expression, as well as “Miss Twiddle”. But it was so long ago, I can’t recall it.

Can’t say I understand how anyone thought Steve Kolbe could replace Ron Weber. Nothing against the guy – seems nice from that bit on NHLN – but he is so vastly less talented, less interesting to listen to, and less sincere in his calling of the games that I sometimes just get upset listening to him and have to turn the game off. And don’t even get me started on Ken Sabourin.

I still miss Ron Weber, he was a legend.

by katzistan on Nov 29, 2009 7:59 PM EST reply actions

I agree completely. I too turned into a fan from listening to Ron Webber call the games. My bedtime was usually right after the games started so I had to listen to them on the radio in bed as I was supposed to be going to sleep.

On the nights I was able to stay up to watch the entire game, I would turn on a radio and listen to him instead of Mike Forenes and Al Koken (man were they ever awful).

It is a shame that La Sooz ran him out in favor of Kolbe. I’ve been saying for years, call the Caps offices and get put on hold, you’ll want to hang up.
