Happy Thanksgiving, guys and gals. My daily Rink visits are always a pleasure, and I thank you all for that. Now let’s all get goofy on tryptophan.
Fight, you time-wasting figure skaters!
In terms of hockey played, 52 is no longer a kid. At some point he needs to stop taking dumb penalties when protecting a lead in the third.
I firmly believe that day won’t come until the Caps have another defenseman who can really be trusted for huge, end-of-game minutes. I think Greener’s trying to do too much because he looks around the locker room and figures out that if he doesn’t shut them down, nobody will

And, with just a little luck, we got a glimpse of a guy last night who will be up full-time sooner rather than later/

I’d still feel better with 6 year vet who’s had a reputation for good D his whole career…

Fair point. Who knows? Maybe we’ll have both by the deadline: 52; 3; 55; 27; 2; 6-year vet w/rep for good D throughout.

Should’ve asked…sounds like you have someone specific in mind, judging by your description.

Here’s a list of D I threw out there once before:
Jan Hejda (2M/yr thru 10/11)
Fedor Tyutin (2.8M/yr thru 11/12)
Willie Mitchell (3.5M, UFA)
Mike Weaver (800K, UFA)
Joe Corvo (2.6M, UFA)
Zbynek Michalek (1.25M, UFA)
Ron Hainsey (4.5M/yr thru 12/13)
Kurt Sauer (1.75M, UFA)
Barret Jackman (3.6M/yr thru 11/12)
Greg Zanon (2M/yr thru 11/12)
Kim Johnsson (4.85M, UFA)
Nick Schultz (3.5M/yr thru 13/14)
They’re not all 6 year vets, but they’re all solid in their own end (I relied on Hockey Analytics in making the list)

I think just for fantasy purposes we have to throw Special Neids on there. If ANA continues to suck he will be shopped. That’s a guy I wouldn’t mind GMGM giving up a lot to bring in. He would be the perfect mentor for Green and would immediately solidify our entire D corps.

As long as he doesn’t go back to NJD. Eff that. If GMGM lets NJD out-bid him I’ll be extremely disappointed. NJD has basically no farm to offer so getting Nieds, I would assume, would deplete their entire stock. I wouldn’t be so upset about that going forward, but considering how much young talent we have it’s time for GMGM to turn some of that into present rewards. The problem is deciding who goes. I don’t want to move Alzner or Carlson unless we are getting a guy for his prime (like Suter or Weber, etc.). I don’t think you can give those guys up for a loan. Then you have a wealth of second tier prospects and some picks. If NJD can afford Nieds, we can too.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
My only problem with Nieds coming on board would be finding him a number.
Familiar Rapports: Bald Pollack, F&B, Gould Old Days.
Lobbies: Osala, Perreault, Erskine, Pothier, Neuvirth, Flash.
Fan of: Mean Lars Backstrom, Line Mashing, Cake.
Ha. I’ve thought about that. Ten bucks says Alzner is such a humble pro he offers it right up and goes back to 47 or his second favorite number. Really, if that’s the biggest problem then that’s why GMGM needs to make a push.
Here’s the list of forwards I think can compete for top 6 ice in the next two years: AO, Backstrom, Semin, Knuble (only 1 more year in all likelihood, though I could see a short extension if the numbers work), Laich, Flash, Fehr, MP, Osala, Mackan, Bouchard. Who knows if someone like Kugryshev or Eaken come out of nowhere to really push in the next year or two as well. That’s just too many bodies to realistically get them all into the lineup. At some point GMGM should package those guys for an impact acquisition, IMO. It wouldn’t even be going “all in” because in any scenario he’ll still be holding on to several chips.
ProspectsI don’t want moved in any circumstances: Carlson, Alzner
Prospects that shouldn’t be moved but for a huge deal: Varly, Neuvy, Mackan, MP, Osala
Prospects I’d be most willing to say good bye to: Bouchard, Godfrey (but no value), Angus, basically any draft pick.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
We’d need more salary cap ceiling, but yeah, I’m in strong agreement.
Familiar Rapports: Bald Pollack, F&B, Gould Old Days.
Lobbies: Osala, Perreault, Erskine, Pothier, Neuvirth, Flash.
Fan of: Mean Lars Backstrom, Line Mashing, Cake.
Yeah we would. But if Nyls isn’t gone by the deadline basically all acquisition talk is moot. If he’s gone soon enough he could open up enough space for us to fit Special Nieds’ prorated cap hit for the rest of the season. Who knows how it plays out, I just wanted to throw Special Nieds into the mix of acquisitions because everyday it looks more likely that he could be shopped.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Hey, Nyls+semin+holtby for Nieds and Bobby Ryan?
Ok, NHL 10, would they accept this? (I’ll have to create Holtby).

Is anyone else holding out hope that Theodore might be expendable by the deadline? His contract is almost as big as Nylander’s so moving him would do a world of cap good.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 26, 2009 5:46 PM EST up reply actions
I am but that also means we have to replace him. I’m big on Neuvy but I’m not confident going down the stretch and into the playoffs with two rookies. So we’re not just looking at Theo’s cap space, we’re looking at the cost of replacing him. I’d be fine with someone like Biron but I’m sure he’ll be in demand and I don’t know what it’ll take to pry him from NYI. I also don’t know who is interested in taking Theo at this point. We may have to give up assets just to move him and that is definitely not worth it.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
How about this one: If Montreal falls out of contention, Matthieu Perrault and a first round pick for Andrei Markov (5.75 Million this year and 5.75 Million next year, UFA summer of ’11)
Atta dinnin stick a who!
by Gould Old Days on Nov 26, 2009 3:45 PM EST up reply actions
But Markov is injured. And we can’t afford him anyhow since we’re trying to get our own guys signed, like Backstrom, Semin, and Flash, among others.
as of an hour ago, he’s eying a mid January return – and realistically Montreal won’t trade him until way closer to March 1 anyway. It bears thinking.
But the cap hit necessary is a thought.
Re: the Cap hit, the following players will come off the cap this offseason:
Nylander (4.75 Million)
Theodore (4.5 Million)
Brian Pothier (2.5 Million)
Shaone Morrisonn (1.975 Million)
Brendan Morrison (1.5 Million)
Milan Jurcina (1.375 Million)
(and some others)
Of the guys listed, only Brendan Morrisonn would need to be re-signed or replaced if the Caps acquired Markov. Nylander is not currently playing; Neuvirth can step in for Theodore; and Green, Markov, Poti, Schultz, Alzner, Carlson and Erskine make seven. Assuming the Caps bring back Pothier for about 2 Million to give Carlson another development year, that still leaves well over 10 Million. That’s space enough for Markov and for Backstrom and Semin to get decent raises.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
by Gould Old Days on Nov 26, 2009 5:08 PM EST up reply actions
Something that came to mind is Markov’s potential impact on Green’s next contract. Markov makes more than Green now and bringing in a guy at 5.75 now may push Green to go for even higher, especially considering he out-produces Markov.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
If they don’t want to bring back Potsy for 2.5 they might elect to keep Jurcina, which frees just over another million, if they were that tight. But i’m also not big not on getting Markov, if there are other options.
He may gel well with the Caps team, but fwiw, I’m really, really for getting Special Nieds. (hey, I’m allowed to dream.)
Great list, thanks. Let’s bring ’em all in for a tryout.
by mechanicsville on Nov 26, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t see how committing mindless, careless penalties such as sending the puck over the glass has anything to do with 52 feeling pressure to be a shutdown D. It’s consistent with the rest of his play: He has brain-farts. Skill-wise he’s an A+. Thinking-wise he’s… not.
That comes with time though. Often, when young players are skilled and athletic they can get by without the game sense that would make them the complete package. When you skate by without it for so long, it takes time, and maturity, to develop. People (myself included) often forget how young Green is, compared to the the defensemen we want him to be like.
266 games, yes.
But he still isn’t being coached out of these errors. They’ve become a consistent habit.
I dunno how much coaching Boudreau feels he can give to a guy coming off a 31 goal, 73 point season with +24 in 68 GP.
by red army line on Nov 26, 2009 1:59 PM EST up reply actions
That is the problem, yes. All the moreso because some coaching-up of the player is plainly warranted.
I do see a direct correlation between being given too many minutes (or being asked to do too much) and mistakes. Many of Green’s errors are caused, in part, by fatigue. He needs to take shorter shifts, fewer of them, and not feel like he has to carry the team defensively all by himself.

Earlier you said: “I think Greener’s trying to do too much because he looks around the locker room and figures out that if he doesn’t shut them down, nobody will.”
My comment was in response to that, and I stand by it.
I agree that like the Capitals’ other young stars, the coaching staff does not enforce details such as shift-length discipline.
And some sitting down. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he looked much better skating fewer minutes last night than he did skating 30 against OTT. I really think his minutes need to be managed better by BB. Green will skate as long as BB lets him and a huge part of the responsibility falls on BB to manage his minutes and direct him to be more conservative in the third with a lead.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
And herein lies the crux of the problem in my mind. Greener played more than 30’ in Toronto, too. I’m not at all sure what the hell BB was doing with the minutes in the OTT game. Fehr, Beagle, and Perrault barely played in the 3rd period. I understand some of that had to do with so much PK time, but still.
by mechanicsville on Nov 26, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t necessarily disagree with your point but I don’t think the delay of game is a great example of it. That wasn’t a stupid decision, it was an error of execution. He may have been trying to do too much, as GOD suggested, but if he hits the glass nobody is saying anything. It’s not like he forced the puck up the middle or made a bad pinch. He does need to tighten up his defensive game and be a little more conservative with the lead, but he still hasn’t even hit the magical 300 game mark so I’m hoping he still has plenty of growing left to do.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Unfortunately, Green is not the only person on our team taking “dumb” penalties in the third period when we’re protecting a lead. We have a whole team full of them. One of them is his “normal” defensive pairing partner (who seems to get majors against Florida for some reason). No, I don’t wish to just pick on ShaMo.
Someone, (I believe it was someone on this blog) had compiled a list of the guys who took third period penalties and I think the leader in that department was Brendan Morrison but it was pretty spread out.
BTW, I don’t even think the “Delay of game for puck off the ice” should even be a penalty. In my humble opinion, it should be a faceoff in the team’s defensive zone.

In my case, Ovi is one of my two favorite players, along with Semin. Ovi reminds me of an old friend that I’ve known from my first job — at the time he was my government client and I a newly minted contractor. Had the same aura.
Eventually, that friend left the government and I went to work for him. He was the reason I enjoyed going to work.

Only if they officially assign him to Hershey. He would probably report to Hershey unlike Nylander who is still in limbo.
If he clears waivers and isn’t assigned to Hershey, he frees up no cap room. If he clears waivers and is assigned to Hershey, is he the kind of professional who would report, or have a big conniption fit? That’s more the question I ask.

I’m definitely thankful for a great effort last night by the Caps. I was even screaming in my living room after the PK performance in the 3rd last night. I believe Karl Alzner is going to be the holiday gift we are all going to be happy we received this year.
A man gotta have a code
We were watching the Macy’s parade, and a Care Bear float came by. I wondered what the Caps were doing for Thanksgiving! (They skated, too)
But the Caps’ Thanksgiving practices are not open to the public since Kettler isn’t open (or at least not to the public).
Wasn’t Boudreau’s first practice with the Caps a Thanksgiving Day practice.
So, have you decided which of the real Care Bears correspond to which guys on the Caps? Let’s see, there was Cheer Bear, Grumpy Bear, Love-a-Lot Bear, Friendship Bear.

You’re younger than my first daughter. (Not to mention, younger than Semin, Green, Ovi, Fehr, Flash, and Schultz.) The only Caps younger than you are Varlamov, Backstrom, Perrault, and Alzner. (That’s current cast of characters. We’re not counting the guys sent back down.)
Oh where’d you go to college?
Shenandoah University. I’m student teaching in spring.

It wasn’t awful – I drove an hour to get to the metro, and then 30 minutes to an hour on the metro (Orange the whole way). More of a pain driving back after skipping class and getting to Winchester around 2 AM when you have class at 8 the next morning.

Heh. I hear you. I go to school in Canada, so when the Caps were in Ottawa, my friend and I drove up right after class, went to game, drove right back, in time to make 8 am class. Worth it though – I only see the Caps when they’re in any of the three eastern Canada cities and Buffalo (if it’s a weekend game and I’m lucky).
Well, I guess you don’t want to admit to the “skipping class” part.
I do the Metro thing, too. On weekends, I go from East Falls Church. During the week, I go from Vienna (since going east on 66 inside the Beltway is impassable.
Do you go to all the games or only occasionally? It’s my first year as a STH.
I’m not a STH, because I don’t have the money for it yet. Once I get a job, and settled into my career, I plan on getting them, but it’s looking like a waiting list for me.
I make it to maybe one or two games a year, now, but back in high school my parents got me to 5-6.

Just for fun, I followed the link to the Sabers SB Nation Blog and they referred to last night’s game as an “Epic Fail in Our Nations Capital”. The person writing up the game summary described it as “the most frustrating game I had seen all season” and was frustrated by the fact that the Sabres had shots all night and couldn’t convert anything when the Caps “are not a good defensive team”.
Things I’ve noticed:
1) Sabres fans overwhelming do not believe that Ovi should be suspended for that hit to Kaleta and the writer was not even that hard on Ovi and says it’s the same type of hit that Kaleta does, except for being on the receiving end.
2) Not very many people have commended on their blog, only 18. Unlike the huge number who post here and on Capitals Insider.
3) The Sabres fans posting are certainly having a “sky is falling” mentality and calling for healthy scratches to key players. (Where have I seen that before?)
I saw that post too and I complimented the author for staying objective. He really fought the fanboy impulse to crucify AO for that hit. Well done. But I’m not sure that it’s representative of Sabers nation. I think there are probably plenty who think it was a purely evil hit.
It’s tough to compare other SBN blogs to here because Japers’ Rink is obviously the best. We’re definitely spoiled by our fearless leaders. Most SBN blogs don’t seem to get the same comment volume as we get here, try not to hold it against them. I do prefer to go to the sites that get lots of comments, but there are some lower comment sites that have great moderators and just need time to build their fanbase. Don’t know if Die by the Blade falls under that list because I haven’t checked them out much.

I am ubiquitous! But I did manage to refrain from getting into it with that guy who was irate about the hit and kept calling AO a headhunter. I figured if he wanted to go he’d respond to me.

Dear Onions,
I love how you taste, but why do you have to make preparing yourself such a pain in the ass?
Ever yours in palate,

How so? Just the dicing and keeping the juice out of your eyes?
One of the people I was feeding is allergic to onions, so I used Granny Smith apples instead. By the way – this tasted AWESOME. Just sayin’.

Yeah, my eyes are very sensitive to the acid products that form when the vapor hits the water in your tears. I can’t get through a whole large onion without needing to take a break for lack of vision.
I’ll give that a whack, but not in oyster stuffing. When I make sausage stuffing for the folks coming over this weekend, though…
by Knee high to a duck on Nov 26, 2009 7:05 PM EST up reply actions
No, wouldn’t work in oyster stuffing. Pears might, though.
I know what you mean about onions, though – make sure you’re using a super-sharp knife. I’ve found that sharpening the knife right before cutting onion makes the juice fly less and I manage longer.
Our lives are this moment, the music, the dance ....

Oh yeah, the vapor is released on crushing, not so much cutting. Using a pronounced slicing motion instead of a chopping motion with a very sharp knife helps me a lot, but it’s still tough.

Yes, it is. I was as glad that I didn’t need to slice any today. Apples are much friendlier.

Onion Goggles

I own a pair of these. They are fantastic. I think my wife got them partially as a joke, since I always suffer so badly cutting onions, but they really work! And since I have no shame, I don’t care that they look goofy.

Nature. Lots of folks talking about it.
You wanna know what comes from nature? Onions. God put ‘em here for us to eat. And he chocked ’em full of folic acid and magnesium. And that’s real good for your colon. But I like ‘em cuz they taste good, like America used to. So listen to ol’ Hank Murphy, and eat your damn onions.

Given the games Semeon played last year in the playoffs, is he eligible for the Calder this year?
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
Semyon….
I think the answer is ‘yes’ since he only played 6 games last years. It felt like more. So he’s Calder eligible but when was the last Calder winner a goaltender?
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
Yes. I believe it’s more than 25 games in any single previous season or in six or more games in more than two years of any major professional league. I think he has to be younger than 26 as well.
Turkey waiting to be carved, I’ll make this brief.
I’m thankful for The Rink, its authors and for the commentariat that makes reading this site so interesting on a daily basis.
I’m thankful for the opportunity to watch an exciting young team grow into its potential.
I’m thankful for the ability to watch the greatest player forward in a generation ply his trade on an 82-game basis over the regular season and during the playoffs.
Happy Turkey Day, folks. Enjoy it!

So expect a bit more later today, but for now, just keep rockin’ this thread.

:: raises hand ::
(But just might need to run a coughlongerrandcough right around practice time at Kettler.)
Also, there’s plenty of clips – all in the theme of “Should Ovechkin be suspended”. The general sentiment is decidedly mixed, with a much greater chance of saying hell yeah if you hail from anywhere in Pennsylvania that doesn’t have a chocolate factory.
There’s also a surprising number of people who think Kaleta (or whatever his name was) had it coming to him and wish to shake AO’s hand. A lot of the HFBoards folk, f’r instance.
It might be interesting to check with Down Goes Brown (currently still reeling from yet another Leafs … win(!) and find out if his suspension flowchart got any extra traffic the last two days.
SO FЯIENDS, IS BATTLE NOW.
You’ve been very busy with all of that research. I find it interesting that the league says no additional punishment, but if he does it again within half a season, he’ll get suspended. You’d think they would have said the wrong penalty call was made and remove the game misconduct from his record. I could have seen a jusified charging call. Whatever. Just be a little more careful, Alex.
Saying there won’t be supplemental discipline isn’t the same as saying the ref made a bad call. Refs have a ton of discretion in calling boarding PIMs and the league isn’t going to just call out one of their own refs. Can’t say I’m surprised by this.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
No, but they do rescind automatic suspensions that accompany instigator penalties in the last five minutes of a game, at the league’s discretion (* cough * Malkin * cough *). That’s where I was heading with that comment.

not working, but back at home today. Today is annual lunch at Penn Quarter with dad; here’ hoping they put the hockey games on.
was going to head out the Kettler, and then decided trying to brave the Ballston area on black friday just wasn’t my thing.
It isn’t bad out here, oddly. Anyone else at the rink at KCI this morning?

Only one year?!?!
“Finally, on this day of giving thanks, we’d like to thank everyone who has made our first year at SB Nation (yes, it was one year ago today we came over) such an incredible success. Enjoy the day, people.”
I guess I started reading JR about a year ago and thought this blog had been around for some time. Iwas happy I found it and pissed that I been in the dark that it even existed. Glad to hear I didn’t miss much. Keep up the good work JP and company. JR has quickly become the last (and longest) stop on my morning internet routine!
Japers’ Rink was an independent blog on blogspot for three years and change before giving in to the siren call of the z key and agreeing to be absorbed into the SBNation collective.
SO FЯIENDS, IS BATTLE NOW.
Anyone hear what time the practice at Kettler starts today? The damn Practice Schedule link on the Caps website hasn’t been updated in almost a week and a half.
I know non-game day practices are pretty standard (11:00), but since they’re traveling later this afternoon I didn’t know if it was a different time.
10:30. Am here now -
- Giroux’s here. What up?
- ShaMo’s on the ice.
- Lines:
8 – 19 – 33
21 – 9 – 16
14 – 85 – 16
83 – 39 – 10
No D pairs are obvious yet.
Do not see Semin and haven’t seen 89 yet.

Missed you by >that< much, gs. I saw about ~45 min of practice and met up with CapitalCentre.
King Karl is still glowing with happiness. Absolutely radiant.
And I forgot that Giroux wears 33 and was scratching my head…who’s the new guy in the red sweater?
Was wondering where Sloan was as well, now I know.
Still no Sasha Semin on the ice. :(
Overall, Cappies looked like they were enjoying themselves today.
Ballston traffic was nonexistent, though there was a capacity crowd in the Kettler parking lot. Roughly one million kids under the age of six in the stands observing practice, or rather hitting each other while their parents watched practice.
Kettler pro shop is having a Black Friday sale of its own today.
SO FЯIENDS, IS BATTLE NOW.
I also hope the best for Tyler. I know his family has experienced enough tragedy in the past few years.
Damn.
Per TEB:
Tyler Sloan returned to Calgary for a funeral of someone close to him, Coach Bruce Boudreau said.

So is it safe to call Perreault a regular yet, or are we waiting on Gordon to return (and get hurt again)?
I think there were points last year when we all thought Alzner was up to stay. If MP backslides or starts to get physically overmatched (as rookies often do), the right thing to do is to send him back to Hershey for a little more seasoning. But he’s doing pretty well so far. I’ve got no reason to think that’ll happen.

NHL on the Fly just reported Hemsky out 5 months. That’s brutal. Tough to lose a guy for a year on such a bad and stupid hit.
