NYT Slap Shot blog has a bit of a preview of tonight’s Sabres-Caps tilt.

And a suggested song. Can’t say I disagree with their choice: Tighten Up

That blog seems to agree with caps nation

On the Ovechkin hit:
“I thought the hit came more from the side and not from the back. It was a little bit late but was basically a clean hit. This is the type of hit that Kaleta throws all the time and this time he was on the receiving end.”

When AO brings even one linemate with him into the zone, he’s much more effective. Loved the lateral cross and then the drive to the net to create traffic.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 25, 2009 7:20 PM EST reply actions

Yeah. He absolutely needs support. The D have to at least be concerned with another player. I still want Backstrom carrying the puck into the zone (or MP).

If their cap space would allow it, I wish the Caps would get a Owen Nolan type..An adequate scorer not afraid to mix it up. Maybe not 37 years old though.

I could stand to see 22-23 minutes of Green if the boys jump out to a lead. Love to see him use a few less minutes so he’s fresher for the spring.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 25, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

I’m with you except it runs against what the team philosophy would seem to be, plus I think we could trot out that discussion once they start closing games out with some more consistency.

I know, but I wonder if a big part of why Green struggled in the playoffs last season is because he was just worn down from getting 28 or 29 minute games in the middle of the year.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 25, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

He missed 1/5 of the season. He got rest. He had a bum shoulder and too much weight. That was his problem.

When? On that rebound I thought Green was slacking and MP did a nice job tracking the puck down and clearing it. They both owe MP.

When they passed it up the right side and they got a clear shot on goal. Varly came out nicely and blocked it with ihs pad

by OV2Champs on Nov 25, 2009 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah. I need to watch that again to see why Schultz was so far to the one side. I think BUF got a quick cross-ice pass and Schultz wasn’t quick enough to get over. He still did a nice job taking the angle away and forcing the far shot. Varlamov is going to make that save. I’m more concerned with both of their response to the rebound.

agreed. wasn’t egregious, but schultz is out of position way to often – and when he is he can’t recover because of his lack of speed.

by OV2Champs on Nov 25, 2009 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

I actually think Schultz has been solid tonight. He’s basically been invisible which is how he wants to be. Considering he is with Green tonight, which tends to expose D, I think that’s pretty good.

by Steck It Out on Nov 25, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

see your point……but I’m with Steck

in Clark’s defense, who would you have put on the 1st line? I think BB put him there for some physicalness to help out AO. its a bonus that he’s put himself in those spots for chances.

by RedskinFan4Life on Nov 25, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

Backs and AO are plenty physical, I don’t think that’s the issue. I’d rather someone that can be relied on to finish his chances with more regularity – like Flash or Laich.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 25, 2009 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, i’d like that too, but that makes those lines non-scoring threats….

Rock the Red! Rock the White! Rock the Blue! Rock the Pens!

by RedskinFan4Life on Nov 25, 2009 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree. BMo and Perreault have both been playing exceptionally well, especially BMo. All three top lines are generating chances, it’s just the best ones have come off AO’s stick.

The one that sticks in my mind is Backstrom making an absolutely dirty no-look backhand to AO, who hit Clark all alone at the side of the net. If he goes near-side high, Miller has no chance. None. Instead, he tries to slide it under the pads and gets beaten by the butterfly.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 25, 2009 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

picture this.....

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Laich
Clark-Morrison-Fehr
Fleischmann-Perreault-Bradley
Sloan-Steckel-Beagle

this first scenario - 2nd line isn’t scary at all …..

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Flash
Laich-Morrison-Fehr
Clark-Perreault-Bradley
Sloan-Steckel-Beagle

No knock against MP, he does a great job improving Clark and Bradley’s play, but they are just not goal scorers.

I think BB wanted to spread out his goal scorers to create more chances. Thus, AO, Laich, and Flash on three different lines.

Rock the Red! Rock the White! Rock the Blue! Rock the Pens!

by RedskinFan4Life on Nov 25, 2009 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

With either of those scenarios, this game is probably 2-0 or 3-0 if everyone continues their defensive play.

Or, you can go:
8-19-21
14-9-16
17-85-10
89-39-83

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 25, 2009 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

hadn’t thought of that scenario - was thinking of moving only Clark……

guess we’ll never know BB’s intentions……

I like these. Right now MP doesn’t have to step into a prominent role on the team. He can just get used to playing in the NHL and giving us solid play. Next year I’m real excited to see MP and Mackan come to camp and threaten to give this team 3 scoring lines. In my dreams I imagine the Caps going to their own “rookie fourth line” like Hershey did. I don’t know if it’s feasible in the NHL but having Mackan/MP/Osala on our roster makes me tingle.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 25, 2009 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I love that guy. We don’t have that because our guys don’t do that. Laich hasn’t dropped the gloves to take on someone, but he should. Not only that, Kaleta planted his skates. When you do that, of course you are gonna fly when you get hit. Not Ovie’s fault Kaleta was next to the boards when he planted

by renstar on Nov 25, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

Kaleta really put himself in terrible position and AO got him firmly on the shoulder. That’s fucking garbage. This is still the NHL. This has been my fear with the “hits to the head” thing. It doesn’t get enforced by actual dangerous hits. It gets enforced by the optics of the hit. that is bullshit. That was clean.

by Rob Parker on Nov 25, 2009 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

It was only a major cause Kaleta came up cloudy from hitting his head on the boards. A 5 minute major for that has to be when you jam someones head into the boards, not check them from the side. I think the refs saw 8 and thought it was a chance to show everyone there are no ‘favorites’.

no argument with them not being the story until that call. The point is you cannot call that as a 5 min major w/ game misconduct when the player turns his back less than a stride before the hit. learn how to take a hit pansy-a$$

Perfect team play. BMo wins the faceoff. Green with a nice play at the point and a nice play to get the puck low to BMo. BMo with the play to get the puck and get behind the net, then the pass. Fehr crashing the net looking for a loose puck and burying it. Love it. Caps are better without AO. He holds them back.

No. Gaustad ducked and gave him his back. I don’t consider that a punishable hit from behind. You see that play all the time. The issue with hitting from behind is whether the guy sees it coming and if he’s going face first into the boards. Gaustad knew AO was coming and instead of going shoulder to shoulder he turned and ducked. What else is going to happen there? Should AO, or anyone, have to turn away and just skate past?

Fehr enough (yuk-yuk). Coulda been. We all know the loss in details and lack of good views when seen live. I haven’t watched the recorded version yet, so cannot comment beyond my seat’s view. To me and my limited view, Alzner seemed to be pressing and had a few bad plays. Again, I’ll watch the tape and re-evaluate. For now I’m glad to have him up, just not one of the three stars for the game. Happy turkey-day! (Also, didn’t mean to type in the title box to make it bold) :)

by kcfatts on Nov 26, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Happy turkey day. Alzner had a couple bad plays but he still has only played 30 NHL games. He skates much better than Juice, Shamo, Erskine, or Schultz and that really helped him get to loose pucks that those guys don’t get to. His decisions with the puck were in general quick and decisive… and correct. I thought he was a big reason we didn’t get pinned in our own zone on the PK and ES. If you look around this thread you’ll see where I freak out over a ridiculously simple play because of how smooth and easy he makes it look. He’s definitely an upgrade.

Alan May FTW

Good for him for calling out Kaleta as deserving of that hit. That guy is a dirtbag.

I will admit I was disappointed that locker didn’t say at game’s end that the Caps had “passed their litmus test”.

Maybe if I was going to Vancouver, but nah, got bargain airfare and a cheap rate at the hotel across the street, so I could sink the money into the tickets.

That’s awesome. Is it the same building as the Molson Center? I don’t actually know. I know the game I went to at the Molson Center was amazing. Try to let yourself remember some of it.

I think it was renamed from Molson to Bell. I’ve been prepping the inner fanboy the last couple days. Tonight helps.

Tonight was as smooth and refreshing 60 minutes as the 60 minute hopping process that Dogfish Head uses.

And on that note, night folks. Whomever I don’t talk to tomorrow, I’ll try to guest star on the international GDT-age Saturday.

Definitely on the former; the latter depends on which team we see.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
