I hear that when it comes to Alzner, there is no higher, and that sucker MCs can call him sire.

Aaaand, these last two comments by Birdie and Mark are why this makes me nervous. (Don’t mean to pick on you). This is no-win for Alzner. Expectations are too high. He’s still just a kid.
I’m betting that the boo birds (or even the "whoop"ers) are out for Alzner by next year.

Nah. There’s still another lightning rod on the blueline who’s taller and thus will attract more of the lightning, sparing Karl.
But I do agree that his game and pedigree lend themselves to the hockey-stupid fans not appreciating what he does and how he does it.

I’ve heard a couple Hershey regulars mention that his style of game may go unappreciated by the casual fan. I hope he doesn’t catch Schultz-like flak.

Don’t hold your breath for that this time….especially if he’s embraced the tougher side of hockey.

It’s true, he’s gone all goon with four PIMs in 19 games in Hershey.
Seriously, though, to be able to play effective defense and take that few penalties is a very underrated attribute.
by David M. Getz on Nov 25, 2009 12:28 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I know there was an element of sarcasm…but playing tougher against AHL forwards is going to be a lot easier for him, with less PIMs, when compared to the NHL…both because of skill and because of the two ref system in the NHL.

There’s a load of Hershey fans who hate on Schultz, so if they like Alzner up there, then he probably won’t hit Schultz-like flak here.

So I assume he’ll be paired with pothier? Isn’t that where he was last time and Pothier was taking him “under his wing” and all that jazz?

He was quite successful paired with Jurcina. We’ll see if Gabby goes back to that and keeps Pothier paired with (ugh) Erskine.

i’d like to see 23+27 again, especially considering Jurcina is the lower cap hit and that would be important for future considerations if the pairing works out. and they were pretty damn good last year.

The thing that really pisses me off about Erskine is that he looked pretty decent during the postseason and during training camp/preseason, leading me to believe that he was perhaps maturing into serviceable 5/6 defenseman. Then he went back to sucking like he always had. How dare he challenge my deeply held beliefs like that.

#27
Alzner also wore 27 in the WHL. You can see it on my [signed ;D] Calgary Hitmen jersey tonight.
I thought he wore #47 when first called up because we hadn’t bought out Clymer yet, or we just had an he was still using his training camp number until it was cleared.
I was going to wear my black/purple Mighty Ducks Fedorov tonight, but the Alzner callup requires an emergency substitution.

This move puzzles me. Why send Carlson down just to bring Alzner up? Is this a cap move? A performance move? Is it ice time related (wanting to get Carlson more time down on the farm rather than riding pine up in DC)? Its certainly a good thing for Karl but I didn’t think Carlson’s play warranted him being sent down.
"I think the relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post is a real difference from previous years," Redskins general counsel David Donovan said. "But in terms of the way our actual fans are behaving, we don't see any difference."
by Sct112 on Nov 25, 2009 9:57 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
My best guess is that Carlson is still in his 1st full pro season and would benefit more from the ice time in Hershey than Alzner, and that the organization thinks they play about the same level or Alzner is better right now.

From a salary cap perspective, they may have been uncertain whether to LTIR someone last time, so they took the guy with the lower cap hit. Now that they have pulled the LTIR trigger, Alzner may fit for the first time.
Or Neuvirth’s contract might be the difference. Alzner can play since Theo is back. I’m not sure which it is.

Alzner’s salary is $1,675,000.
Neuvirth’s is $821,666.
In order for Alzner to fit under the salary cap, probably someone’s on LTIR:
- Semin = $4,600,000
- Knuble = $2,800,000
- B. Gordon = $761,250
- Laing = $500,000
Probably Knuble. Gordon + Laing = $1,261,250, and we’re already over the cap by
$-463,321…

There’s a lot more going on than just those raw numbers, though. Bonus cushion is also in play, for example.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
by J.P. on Nov 25, 2009 10:18 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Is the choice on the bonus cushion made on a player by player basis? I assume it’s a given Backstrom makes his bonus(es), even though I don’t know what they specifically are. On the other hand, I imagine it’s unlikely Alzner makes his, because I’m assuming part of it’s pegged to games played, and if so, the team can make sure he doesn’t hit that number.
by gfcaps fan on Nov 25, 2009 10:27 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Every bonus counts against the cap until it is technically unreachable, which means almost all of them are in play for the entire season (i.e. a guy could score 40 goals in the last game of the year). Obviously games played bonuses and the like can be technically unreachable earlier.
Whether a team utilizes the bonus cushion is dependent on their individual cap situation.

Also, Bruce said he would probably have preferred to call up Alzner if the cap allowed, because if his extra experience, so now that there’s probably been some LTIR movement, he can.
As I wrote last night, I’m thrilled. I had previously predicted that he should be here at about Thanksgiving — expect I hoped it would be done through effective salary cap management, not because of injuries. I wanted him to be here long enough to find his groove, then lose it during the Olympic break, then find it again in time for the playoffs. Right now, that seems unlikely. Drat.

Is that enough to send one guy down and bring another guy up? For a guy that doesn’t match lines, calling up a player because he plays righty/lefty seems like a lot.
I suppose that they could have sent Carlson down expecting Poti to come back and when that didn’t happen they needed another guy and Alzner was a better fit.
The general consensus seems that this has less to do with Carlson and than it does with Cap room, and Alzner needing a shot.

Agree the righty/lefty is a factor, both Jurcina returning to the line-up aspect, as well as Morrisonn and Poti out.
As JP and I have noted, Knuble had to be on LTIR to make some of the earlier moves work. I have to review the numbers again to see whether or not Laing had to be on LTIR for some of the previous moves to have worked, i.e., the time when Carlson, Beagle, and Neuvirth were all on the roster at the same time. Knuble definitely on LTIR; Laing might be, but I am not sure he had to be based on a quick run of the numbers.

haha. I base that on general reason and his time of play both in the minors and his experience, albeit limited in the NHL, he has been in a position when most of the top NHL D guys were out – and he performed well. Top tier D men take a couple years in the minors and then they come up – this is the process, I think he would agree he has something to prove.

Look at the classes (just the first 2 rounds) from ‘06-’09, games played:
‘06 – 116
’07 – 30 (Karl)
’08 – 360 (yeah, 2008 was sick for D…don’t forget Pietrangelo in STL)
’09 – 44
Comparing him to his class doesn’t do it, since he’s the only real defensive prospect out of that draft so far. He happened to get drafted by a Caps team that was packed with more talent (and more $$ contracts) than the #4 pick attests. The Caps have the ability to let him develop instead of throwing him into the fire like TOR, ATL, and LA did with their guys. Hopefully that strategy pans out…

Alzner “has been playing well down there, but it’s tough because we have eight pretty good defensemen up here when everyone is healthy,” Coach Bruce Boudreau said. “I’m really excited to see him. The reports [from Hershey] are great. We’ll see where it leads.”
Yay. Now nine defensemen in the mix. Not all of them healthy, currently, but that’s a very crowded blueline.
SO FЯIENDS, IS BATTLE NOW.

Bruce can’t count. There were not, prior to Alzner’s arrival, “eight pretty good defensemen up here.”

His talking seemed to turn Flash into a helluva player.

You sure about that? I’ve seen a lot of the same old Flash over the past two weeks or so.

So still solid with some terrible passes?
by MisterBungle on Nov 25, 2009 1:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Still solid? He has one goal, two assists, seven SOG and a minus-3 rating in his last six games. Still solid might be generous.

I don’t know why, but I can’t hate on Flash. Boudreau-itis?
by MisterBungle on Nov 25, 2009 1:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I can’t hate on him until he slumps while the team as a whole plays well. I find it more difficult to criticize players playing badly when the team as a whole has been terrible.
by red army line on Nov 25, 2009 3:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but...
wasn’t it Flash who drew the penalty in the last two minutes of the third against the Habs? The results might not be there, but I feel as though the effort has been.

The “eight/nine good defensemen” meme that McPhee and now Boudreau have been pushing on us may have be good for PR purposes, but I can’t help but feel a little insulted. Like, they actually expect us to believe that? Really?
by Kolzilla on Nov 25, 2009 5:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
What else do you expect them to say? “Yeah, we’ve got one really amazing guy, but he’s young and prone to boneheaded mistakes when he gets tired. After that, we’ve got a couple of serviceable veterans, some guys with potential and a bunch of minor league flotsam and jetsam?”

Maybe, hopefully, possibly, Alzner being called up is a sign that Nylander is about to move (in addition to the obvious need for a good blue liner). It’s been so quiet on the 92 watch…
by Direction 87 on Nov 25, 2009 1:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think there is a Caps fan out there that doesn’t hope for a resolution on that topic, but that’s reading too much into a call-up based on 2 dmen out (Poti and Morrisonn) and cap space freed up from the demotion of Carlson and Andrew Gordon.

Smitty
Before LAST season Greg Smith told me they were looking to move Nylander.

Did Smitty also say that the team wants to win the Cup?

reason number 6,793 why I love Karl Alzner.
Although Alzner is not technically a rookie anymore, he stayed behind to pick up pucks and put them in a bucket after practice.
“I still consider myself a rookie until a full season, or at least half a season,” Alzner said. “So I’m still a rookie to me.”

Nice stuff.
I have a photo of Jakub Klepis at Ashburn holding a bucket of pucks.

Love that. I commented on him picking up the pucks at the training camp scrimmage.

Tonight’s game was A+ work from one Mister Karl Alzner. Like I said in the GDT, he needs an NHL roster spot, right now period fucking dot. He is without question in our top 6 and probably in our top 4 right now.

He is in our top 4 right now. He makes the team better immediately. In 45 games he’ll be even better.

He was tonight. If it keeps up like it did, he’s in our top pairing already if he can eat the minutes. I straight-up loved his game tonight and only saw the one play against Gaustad where he was cleanly beaten and that was by a much larger man along the boards at speed.
I would eat a puppy for his breakout passes to continue.

The upgrade is incredible. I really didn’t expect him to be this good. HER FTW.
