Dear Crazy Ron,
Thank you for being your crazy self and starting Vesa. Because, you know, Ovechkin didn’t score last night and needs to pot 3 or 4 to make up for it. We really appreciate you understanding this.
Love,
Caps Nation

Leafs fans are already conceding the game. This makes me nervous.

Eh, it’s like watching the Ravens play the Browns. Sure they might lose, but damn the Browns are awful! You have to do a lot to lose that game.
by Bman21212 on Nov 21, 2009 5:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ravens-Browns is awesome, because Browns fans are foaming at the mouth insane with their hatred of the Ravens. So much fun to watch those games in the company of Browns fans. And if the Browns suck, then the fans start shouting obscenities at both teams. Good times.
by RedBirdie on Nov 21, 2009 5:36 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I always make sure I get tickets to the Browns games every year at M&T. Mainly because it’s almost a guaranteed blowout win every time.

I was going to ask why Toskala was in goal, as I thought he was medicore on a good day. However, I looked at the stats from last game. Even though it was on 45 shots, GUSTAVSSON let in 5 goals, then lost in OT. Guess that’s enough reason to start a new guy. 5 against Carolina no less.
http://www.nhl.com/scores/htmlreports/20092010/GS020299.HTM
The 2nd game in a row is always rough, but it seems like we are getting every edge possible. Toskala and the Leafs are not too scary right now.
by Bman21212 on Nov 21, 2009 5:11 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
We could beat Toronto last year when Toskala was in goal. Once he was gone for the year, we couldn’t do squat against Martin Gerber and Cujo in goal and lost low scoring close games.
by CapsFan75 on Nov 21, 2009 7:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
oh, was that the game where Toskala completely lost it and hit the ref?
by RedBirdie on Nov 21, 2009 7:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Toskala wasn’t the goalie who hit the ref. (He was out for the year, by that time.) That was Gerber. Then the Caps lost it in OT. (Semin was sick that day but still playing.)

Definitely understandable. Friday night home game against a team that isn’t as good as us…should have been a layup. Makes me think of when the Blue Jackets came to town on a Friday last year, and Mason shutout us out on like 40-something shots. Frustrating.

It is just sad, especially since the cable here is Comcast, you would think that they wouldn’t want to present such a crappy product.

It’s also the Hockey Night in Canada game (if you’ve got NHL Network). Hopefully that feed is a lot clearer than the CSN+ one.

My bad, dudes...
I’m going to be missing this game to go see Lee Konitz at the Kennedy Center. The Caps have lost all six games I’ve missed from both this season and last season. So, I’m to blame if the Caps lose.

Noticed from highlights of several recent Toronto home games, Leafs have been wearing white. It’s home team’s choice, no?

Going back to that slash non call on Beagle, it really seems like the refs have stopped calling the away from the puck stuff.
Even though we got what might be called a weak interference penalty, I really thought they were going to call Carlson for his little hold up of the guy who dumped the puck.
These things were the focus at the beginning of the season, and they already have fallen by the wayside by the refs. Did the league decide that they really didn’t want to make those calls? Or is it just that the refs can’t keep up any consistancy?

Interesting, was reading this story about Blackhawks trying to sign extensions. Interesting first because they are hoping to sign Toews and Kane to 5.5 – 6.5 million contracts, but also because they can’t finalize those and Keith’s contracts because they aren’t sure they have enough tagging room.
Hadn’t heard that term before. Really hope as we get to signing our young guys we don’t ever get to the point where we are worried about having more in contract money than cap space before the previous season even ends.

I have a question for the rules gurus. If your skates go over the blue line before your stick and the puck, isn’t it offside? I thought I saw a Leaf do that but no call was made.
by gfcaps fan on Nov 21, 2009 8:49 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
that is offsides, as you describe it
Support your local bakery!
by bigonetimer on Nov 21, 2009 8:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
83.1 Off-side – Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone.
The position of the player’s skates and not that of his stick shall be the determining factor in all instances in deciding an off-side. A player is off-side when both skates are completely over the leading edge of the blue line involved in the play.
"I'm just doing karate and trying to get females pregnant."
by Bald Pollack on Nov 21, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That is one rule i dont like about offside in hockey. I think you should not be able to put yourself offside, that is, if you carry the puck across, you aren’t offside. Or if you reach, from an offside position, and snag the puck from the otherside of the blue line, you should not be offside
by renstar on Nov 21, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You’re not in the former situation. The latter, sure.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 21, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
if you skate backward across the line, then you are (if you have long arms). i’ve seen it happen, rarely, but it happens
by renstar on Nov 21, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
However, a player actually controlling the puck who shall cross the line ahead of the puck shall not be considered "off-side," provided he had possession and control of the puck prior to his skates crossing the blue line.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 21, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Righto, must have been another player offside then in the cases that I thought i saw that
by renstar on Nov 21, 2009 9:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
you are right, 83.1 is pretty clear.
"I think the relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post is a real difference from previous years," Redskins general counsel David Donovan said. "But in terms of the way our actual fans are behaving, we don't see any difference."
by Sct112 on Nov 21, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs

by Sct112 on Nov 21, 2009 9:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Here’s what I saw. Leaf was putting stick out to corral the puck near the blue line. He flipped around and his skates went over the line while the puck was still out. So it sounds like he was offside, but I’m the only one who saw it. Or this broadcast is so bad it didn’t actually happen.
by gfcaps fan on Nov 21, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You mean if you’ve got the puck? No, it’s absolutely not.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 21, 2009 8:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
OK, we’ve got contradictory answers. Are they both correct? Doesn’t apply to the puck carrier skating in backwards?
by gfcaps fan on Nov 21, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That’s right. If a player is in control of the puck, he’s fine.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 21, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
A USA Hockey rule allows for that, but the puck has to be across the line before the player in the NHL.

I was ready to give up on the Capitals season 2 years ago before they hired Bruce.
But now they’re a first place team.
Yes, tonight’s “effort” was atrocious, as was last nights. But this weekend was not indicative of how they usually play. That’s not to say they always give maximum effort, they most certainly don’t. But they usually give better than the pathetic showings they had this weekend.

by Kolzilla on Nov 21, 2009 10:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, I’m pissed. But I’ll still follow the team.
We have the most points in the East since the real talent in the East is in the Atlantic and have harder competition since they play each other 6 times a year instead of 4 for conference rivals. That’s 8 games against stronger teams for a possible 16 point swing in conference standings.
Buffalo has played less games than us.

Backstrom has sucked ass for a while now. There I said it. He’s been horrible.
by Kolzilla on Nov 21, 2009 9:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree, Backstrom’s play has been lackluster going back for a while now. He and AO really need to pick it up. May be time to split them up for a few games.

Yeah. Wasn’t Backstrom rumored to be hurt a while back right before Ovie went down? Maybe he needs a breather.
by Kolzilla on Nov 21, 2009 10:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Nicky was rumored to be sick right before Ovi went down. They didn’t think it was swine flu but I wonder if he had a milder dose of the stuff — not bad enough to have a fever. He did get sick right after Laing. (And Laing got sick right after Semin. I sort of wonder if Semin was the person Laing caught it from.)

The other Leafs guy (not Hughson) made a good point. The Caps have to learn to play night in and night out, otherwise they won’t be a Cup contender. It’s that simple.
Ya freaking grasshopper!

I already assume that it’s a one and out year for the Caps. The 6-8 seeds are drooling at the prospect.

We should be getting some D back this week, no? Nothing against anyone, but the pairs are out of sync.

Mo and Juice aren’t going to change the score tonight.

But at least they can hardly be worse than Sloan and Shultz.

It was less today but yesterday Shultz was exceptionally indecisive with the puck, unable to clear.
by fnralch on Nov 21, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And Sloan was completely out of sync the whole game tonight.
by fnralch on Nov 21, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
OK, well one of those guys is a 28 year old career minor leaguer, and the other is the youngest regular on the backline. And you’re comparing them to guys who’ve been playing about four years in the bigs and make twice, even three times the money, and who possibly aren’t in the organization’s future plans.
Or to put it another way, with 1 GA tonight playing this backline, vs. 1 GA with Juice and ShaMo in there, who does that say more of in the cap-driven era?

by Bald Pollack on Nov 21, 2009 10:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I was under impression that is legitimate to say that two defensemen are not worse than another two. Otherwise it would be forbidden to say that Ovi is better than any other player younger than he or coming from Hersheys.
It does say more of Varly.
by fnralch on Nov 21, 2009 10:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Don’t be silly, of course it’s legitimate but again, Schultz and Sloan (who are < ShaMo and Juice according to you) are part of a lineup that’s given up 2 goals a game in back to back nights.
Or perhaps you’d PLEASE like to enlighten us on your thoughts of Schultz and Sloan and their value to the team.

Not convinced. Schutlz is slow and continually gets burned. Several times this year the opposition has had a clear break or good shot because he was out of position or burned. I have seen this move way too many times.

Enough of schultz.
Sloan I agree is solid
by OV2Champs on Nov 21, 2009 10:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If you read those links, you’d notice the youtube link was in there. So yeah, try reading them.
Schultz gives up fewer goals on ice on ES, is among the best on the team’s PK unit and is routinely up against tougher competition than ShaMo and Juice are. And he’s still the youngest guy in back.
So again, tell me how he sucks without bringing out some tired CI talking point that’s inaccurate or untrue?
"I'm just doing karate and trying to get females pregnant."
by Bald Pollack on Nov 21, 2009 11:04 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Again, don’t want to fight, and you will not like my argument. But watch the guy play – I play hockey, and even I would be embarrassed by some of the plays he makes on the ice.
The main reason his goals against while he is on the ice is because he is expected to play back (as he should with his skill set). at the same time, how often are goals scored by the caps d when he is out there? For players like schultz, stats are not the way he should be judged. To me, it is clear when you watch him play he is not a legit NHL defenseman . But again, that is just my opinion.
by OV2Champs on Nov 21, 2009 11:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ah, the “he plays with…” argument. I have two for this:
So his stats are good because he does his job?
or
If he gets burned, how often is he (or the goalie) fishing the puck out from the net? Not a lot, compared to some of the other guys out there.
Ask guys like Malkin, who scored 0 goals when Schultz was paired on the ice against him last year?
I’m not about to say he’s a stalwart, but he’s better than people give him credit for, whether they want to admit it or not.
"I'm just doing karate and trying to get females pregnant."
by Bald Pollack on Nov 21, 2009 11:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Let me ask you this. Would you agree that he gets burned more times than any other caps defenseman once the puck is past the blue line?
by OV2Champs on Nov 21, 2009 11:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe, maybe not. I think both could have provided some oomph along the boards, maybe less time spent in the defenseive zone.

by Majesty on Nov 21, 2009 10:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought they actually dominated last night. They controlled the puck and had a shit ton of time in MTL’s end. Tonight they never seemed to hang onto the puck, at all.

Agreed, yesterday’s game was beautiful compared to tonight’s “effort”. Worst game I’ve seen the caps play all year.
by Majesty on Nov 21, 2009 10:13 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yep, we are awful. The Caps are a AAAA team, too good for the high minors but not good enough for the NHL. Or at least they played like it tonight.
Caps always have trouble with Toronto. I hate to see how they’ll do against Ottawa. And then they actually play someone good on Wednesday.
by CapsFan75 on Nov 21, 2009 10:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think you have it backwards: the Caps this year and last year have been great against the best teams, but looked terrible against the bottom feeders.

This year, we haven’t done that good against the good teams. New Jersey, we can’t beat. We lost to Detroit.
The one and only good team we’ve beaten is San Jose. We beat Boston, who were good last year but now….. But they’ve woken up.
