Dear Crazy Ron,
Thank you for being your crazy self and starting Vesa. Because, you know, Ovechkin didn’t score last night and needs to pot 3 or 4 to make up for it. We really appreciate you understanding this.
Love,
Caps Nation
Eh, it’s like watching the Ravens play the Browns. Sure they might lose, but damn the Browns are awful! You have to do a lot to lose that game.
Ravens-Browns is awesome, because Browns fans are foaming at the mouth insane with their hatred of the Ravens. So much fun to watch those games in the company of Browns fans. And if the Browns suck, then the fans start shouting obscenities at both teams. Good times.
I was going to ask why Toskala was in goal, as I thought he was medicore on a good day. However, I looked at the stats from last game. Even though it was on 45 shots, GUSTAVSSON let in 5 goals, then lost in OT. Guess that’s enough reason to start a new guy. 5 against Carolina no less.

The 2nd game in a row is always rough, but it seems like we are getting every edge possible. Toskala and the Leafs are not too scary right now.
We could beat Toronto last year when Toskala was in goal. Once he was gone for the year, we couldn’t do squat against Martin Gerber and Cujo in goal and lost low scoring close games.
I’ve seen that before on other posts, but I just see “3 comments, 1 new” when I look. Well, that’s what I see right at the bottom, under the line “Have at it, people.” But yes, in the origional post, I see

I don’t know why but I was really bothered by last night’s loss. I hope we nail this one

Definitely understandable. Friday night home game against a team that isn’t as good as us…should have been a layup. Makes me think of when the Blue Jackets came to town on a Friday last year, and Mason shutout us out on like 40-something shots. Frustrating.

Yea I guess that’s it just frustrating after such a strong performance against the rags. But I have faith :-)

It is just sad, especially since the cable here is Comcast, you would think that they wouldn’t want to present such a crappy product.
My bad, dudes...
I’m going to be missing this game to go see Lee Konitz at the Kennedy Center. The Caps have lost all six games I’ve missed from both this season and last season. So, I’m to blame if the Caps lose.

That’s actually funny, because I had season tickets last year, and the Caps lost all the home games I didn’t go to. Was pretty freaky.

Attention HNIC, the Caps don’t really miss Feds. The fans miss him way more.
And he mentioned Kozzy, too. I don’t think we miss him much.
Fight, you time-wasting figure skaters!
wow, HNIC doesn’t miss an opportunity to take a shot at US teams or European players, do they? Stay classy.
Also, my TV is showing that we’ll get the HNIC broadcast on NHLN. I thought it would be blacked out?
It still likely will be, pregame show is separate broadcast content.

It’s tremendous btw that I should be able to watch it in HD on NHLN…but b/c Comcast wants me to watch it in shitty non HD it’s blacked out on that channel locally.
by Davethecapsfan on Nov 21, 2009 7:02 PM EST up reply actions
I have to question why Comcast can’t put Comcast Sports Net 2 in HD. They own the f’ing cable system. It’s not like they’d have to pay extra licensing fees.
My bigger problem is that in my specific area my Fios doesn’t have the channel for CSN+ for whatever reason.
by Davethecapsfan on Nov 21, 2009 7:04 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t remember if there were even any games on CSN+ last season. Season before that, yes, but not last season. Anyone else correct me on that?
I need 100% of you guys to give 110% 100% of the time.
It was barely any, and it feels like there have already been more this year than all of last year.

Going back to that slash non call on Beagle, it really seems like the refs have stopped calling the away from the puck stuff.
Even though we got what might be called a weak interference penalty, I really thought they were going to call Carlson for his little hold up of the guy who dumped the puck.
These things were the focus at the beginning of the season, and they already have fallen by the wayside by the refs. Did the league decide that they really didn’t want to make those calls? Or is it just that the refs can’t keep up any consistancy?
I think every league just needs to start relying on video cameras. The officiating has been brutal this season in the NHL.
yeah agreed - this would just slow the game down…… i like fast

They generated a ton of chances on Toskala. Some of it is Toskala playing well, some is luck. I didn’t think it was a bad period at all. A little too much action in front of Varly, but what do you expect with 1/2 the defense and your best defensive forward out?

Interesting, was reading this story about Blackhawks trying to sign extensions. Interesting first because they are hoping to sign Toews and Kane to 5.5 – 6.5 million contracts, but also because they can’t finalize those and Keith’s contracts because they aren’t sure they have enough tagging room.
Hadn’t heard that term before. Really hope as we get to signing our young guys we don’t ever get to the point where we are worried about having more in contract money than cap space before the previous season even ends.

Yes, the absences of Knuble and Semin are keenly felt. And to think that every writer and blogger in town was ready to trade Semin or let him walk!!!!
For all you Semin detractors out there, we are seeing two examples of how the Caps will look without Semin. Terrible! A power less play.
What, Semin wouldn’t bring back a top tier forward who doesn’t take dumb HHTs and can play more than 65 games a year?

I have a question for the rules gurus. If your skates go over the blue line before your stick and the puck, isn’t it offside? I thought I saw a Leaf do that but no call was made.
83.1 Off-side – Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone.
The position of the player’s skates and not that of his stick shall be the determining factor in all instances in deciding an off-side. A player is off-side when both skates are completely over the leading edge of the blue line involved in the play.
"I'm just doing karate and trying to get females pregnant."
by Bald Pollack on Nov 21, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions
That is one rule i dont like about offside in hockey. I think you should not be able to put yourself offside, that is, if you carry the puck across, you aren’t offside. Or if you reach, from an offside position, and snag the puck from the otherside of the blue line, you should not be offside
You’re not in the former situation. The latter, sure.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 21, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions
if you skate backward across the line, then you are (if you have long arms). i’ve seen it happen, rarely, but it happens
However, a player actually controlling the puck who shall cross the line ahead of the puck shall not be considered "off-side," provided he had possession and control of the puck prior to his skates crossing the blue line.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 21, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions
you are right, 83.1 is pretty clear.
"I think the relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post is a real difference from previous years," Redskins general counsel David Donovan said. "But in terms of the way our actual fans are behaving, we don't see any difference."
The above quote is also from 83.1 though.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 21, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions
You mean if you’ve got the puck? No, it’s absolutely not.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 21, 2009 8:53 PM EST up reply actions
OK, we’ve got contradictory answers. Are they both correct? Doesn’t apply to the puck carrier skating in backwards?
That’s right. If a player is in control of the puck, he’s fine.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 21, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions
A USA Hockey rule allows for that, but the puck has to be across the line before the player in the NHL.
"I think the relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post is a real difference from previous years," Redskins general counsel David Donovan said. "But in terms of the way our actual fans are behaving, we don't see any difference."

He was fantastic in regulation and OT. If not for him, we would not have gone to OT. The only way he could have won was by a shutout.
I don’t blame him for being out of gas by the shootout. It was a hard game for him. They had a jillion shots on goal. And we got called for offsides and icing so much, it wasn’t funny.

No one likes a quitter. Diehard fans stick with their teams no matter what shit they go through. And I’m proud to say I’m a diehard fan.

Don’t worry. I’ll be back. As mad as I get (and claim to give up after bad losses), I will be back. I will go to games still and watch them.
I did go through the bad times early in their history. And watched all the playoff frustrations. But I do want a Stanley Cup for them before I die.
That’s a pretty long period you’re putting out there. I can shorten it some by saying I’d like to see them win a Cup before I become a grandmother. And as far as I know, that should still be plenty of years off.
I’d like to see them win a Cup before I become a grandmother also. They need to win it before the 2013-2014 season, in fact, if they are to do it with most of the current cast of characters. I’ve already written off that season for the Caps due to the Sochi Olympics.
Don’t let this weekend send you off the plank. They deserved a win last night and sucked horribly on the back end tonight in a tough building. Sucks but we can live with it.
Yeah, miraculously we still got a point out of this. We have plenty of time to right the ship.
Ya freaking grasshopper!

Any proposals for righting the ship? Unfortunately, we can’t hire Don Bylsma as coach. But, then again, I do not wish to fire Boudreau anyhow.
Seeing the injury report have not so many names on it will go a ways before that question needs to get asked.

I was ready to give up on the Capitals season 2 years ago before they hired Bruce.
But now they’re a first place team.
Yes, tonight’s “effort” was atrocious, as was last nights. But this weekend was not indicative of how they usually play. That’s not to say they always give maximum effort, they most certainly don’t. But they usually give better than the pathetic showings they had this weekend.
by Steckel Me Elmo on Nov 21, 2009 9:59 PM EST up reply actions
Yes, I’m pissed. But I’ll still follow the team.
We have the most points in the East since the real talent in the East is in the Atlantic and have harder competition since they play each other 6 times a year instead of 4 for conference rivals. That’s 8 games against stronger teams for a possible 16 point swing in conference standings.
Buffalo has played less games than us.
I think some people are fundamentally unable to differentiate ‘frustrating’ and ‘sucktastic’. Semin is frustrating sometimes, but not sucktastic
Well, on the bright side AO had one of his worst games in a long time and still came away with a goal. Still, he has not played well the last two games and the rest of the team has followed his lead.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
I agree, Backstrom’s play has been lackluster going back for a while now. He and AO really need to pick it up. May be time to split them up for a few games.

Yeah. Wasn’t Backstrom rumored to be hurt a while back right before Ovie went down? Maybe he needs a breather.
Nicky was rumored to be sick right before Ovi went down. They didn’t think it was swine flu but I wonder if he had a milder dose of the stuff — not bad enough to have a fever. He did get sick right after Laing. (And Laing got sick right after Semin. I sort of wonder if Semin was the person Laing caught it from.)
The other Leafs guy (not Hughson) made a good point. The Caps have to learn to play night in and night out, otherwise they won’t be a Cup contender. It’s that simple.

We should be getting some D back this week, no? Nothing against anyone, but the pairs are out of sync.
Explain, particularly the latter.

OK, well one of those guys is a 28 year old career minor leaguer, and the other is the youngest regular on the backline. And you’re comparing them to guys who’ve been playing about four years in the bigs and make twice, even three times the money, and who possibly aren’t in the organization’s future plans.
Or to put it another way, with 1 GA tonight playing this backline, vs. 1 GA with Juice and ShaMo in there, who does that say more of in the cap-driven era?

I was under impression that is legitimate to say that two defensemen are not worse than another two. Otherwise it would be forbidden to say that Ovi is better than any other player younger than he or coming from Hersheys.
It does say more of Varly.
Don’t be silly, of course it’s legitimate but again, Schultz and Sloan (who are < ShaMo and Juice according to you) are part of a lineup that’s given up 2 goals a game in back to back nights.
Or perhaps you’d PLEASE like to enlighten us on your thoughts of Schultz and Sloan and their value to the team.

not trying to start an argument, because I am signing off. But I couldn’t defend schultz even if I tried
Since you’re the second guy who apparently wants to hit and run, I’ll point you to this and this and I’ll look forward to your opinions.

Not convinced. Schutlz is slow and continually gets burned. Several times this year the opposition has had a clear break or good shot because he was out of position or burned. I have seen this move way too many times.

Enough of schultz.
Sloan I agree is solid
If you read those links, you’d notice the youtube link was in there. So yeah, try reading them.
Schultz gives up fewer goals on ice on ES, is among the best on the team’s PK unit and is routinely up against tougher competition than ShaMo and Juice are. And he’s still the youngest guy in back.
So again, tell me how he sucks without bringing out some tired CI talking point that’s inaccurate or untrue?

Again, don’t want to fight, and you will not like my argument. But watch the guy play – I play hockey, and even I would be embarrassed by some of the plays he makes on the ice.
The main reason his goals against while he is on the ice is because he is expected to play back (as he should with his skill set). at the same time, how often are goals scored by the caps d when he is out there? For players like schultz, stats are not the way he should be judged. To me, it is clear when you watch him play he is not a legit NHL defenseman . But again, that is just my opinion.
Ah, the “he plays with…” argument. I have two for this:
So his stats are good because he does his job?
or
If he gets burned, how often is he (or the goalie) fishing the puck out from the net? Not a lot, compared to some of the other guys out there.
Ask guys like Malkin, who scored 0 goals when Schultz was paired on the ice against him last year?
I’m not about to say he’s a stalwart, but he’s better than people give him credit for, whether they want to admit it or not.

Toskala played awesome tonight. That order seems about correct.

I thought they actually dominated last night. They controlled the puck and had a shit ton of time in MTL’s end. Tonight they never seemed to hang onto the puck, at all.
Yep, we are awful. The Caps are a AAAA team, too good for the high minors but not good enough for the NHL. Or at least they played like it tonight.
Caps always have trouble with Toronto. I hate to see how they’ll do against Ottawa. And then they actually play someone good on Wednesday.
I think you have it backwards: the Caps this year and last year have been great against the best teams, but looked terrible against the bottom feeders.

Nobody knows, I heard Semin and his best friend Skill have been looking for em’, no luck yet though.
Well I guess we should give up then. See you next year?

Regular season means Richard Simmons. Especially in November vs. the Leafs.
