I had the same problem when I was playing C league ice hockey (back when I was learning how to play ice). I could outskate the league, but I couldn’t shoot an ice puck for beans.. I had to stickhandle a storm and pray for a five-hole, because high shots wanted to go over the glass.

Both coaches must be livid in this MON/CBJ game. Third period of a one goal game and the game has been end to end and, dare I say, exciting. Why won’t these punks play like this against the Caps?

They have the potential for greatness in that line, but in scariness you can’t say that line is head and shoulders above Heatley/Thornton/Marleau, Perry/Getzlaf/Ryan or 8/19/28 on their games.

by RedBirdie on Nov 27, 2009 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

Anyone watching the post-Thanksgiving afternoon games?

I’ve got the Devs/Bruins on one TV and the Sabres/Flyers on the other.

I’ve got to note that Peters and Thornton dropped the gloves in the NJ/BOS game and within about 10 seconds, NESN had a “fight” graphic up comparing their height, weight, etc. Gotta love hockey.

Also, Kaleta laid a questionable hit on a Flyer. Not sure who just yet. I know Cote went after him and is in the box.

by terpgrrl on Nov 27, 2009 1:24 PM EST reply actions

Nothing questionable about that hit from what I saw. Given I didn’t see the full play, just the tail end. I’ll provide better commentary on it when I see a better replay of the hit.

by Steckel Me Elmo on Nov 27, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

I saw the tail end, too. I guess I should have quoted that questionable. haha It was a nasty hit, at least in real-time. I cringed. It was definitely a blindside boarding from the bit I saw. I’d have to see a slo-mo replay to get a better feel.

by terpgrrl on Nov 27, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

So far in this NJ/BOS game, I’ve seen Boston on a PP, then take a penalty, and now NJ on a PP and take a penalty, all in the same period. I guess everyone’s a little lazy from all the turkey and stuffing yesterday?

Team Toughness v. Winning Games

Thompson (the same one that kneed Green) did something to piss off PIT today and got himself a PIM. Instead of taking the PP Jordan Staal fought Thompson and got 17 PIM. This was just over 2 min into the 3rd. Staal missed almost the entire third and NYI scored two goals to win the game. Gotta imagine PIT would like Staal out there trying to protect a lead. Great data point for the debate about fighting to stand up for teammates or winning games. It’s a personal judgment call but I think the Staal example highlights it nicely.

God, this Center Ice feed is atrocious.

Which feed are you watching? I’m watching DET. Seems about normal.

The Flames feed is dark and ugly.

Oh now that is crap. He wasn’t interfering w/ Kipper at all. Baloney.

Fight, you time-wasting figure skaters!

by boutros23 on Nov 27, 2009 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, terrible call. Mr. Bird has got to be upset if he’s watching. I really have no idea what the refs were looking at.

He was barely touching the crease and didn’t even back in, esp compared to the way wide-load Holmstrom normally does.

Yeah and he didn’t impeded Kipper at all. Soft call.

oh, the screaming. the yelling. the DRAMA. You would have thought the refs killed Mr. Bird’s mom. Repeat with each replay.

by RedBirdie on Nov 27, 2009 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

only caught bits and pieces, but Mr. Bird was not amused with my “Oh my god, he just pulled a Poti!” observation. :)

I believe I will watch the Rags tonight.

Now Ericsson and Datsyuk combine to fumble a goal away. Uncharacteristic play in their own zone by DET tonight.

He does reach a unique level of hate for me. I’m normally pretty good at separating my feelings of someone as a player and a person, but I just hate his guts.

Definitely LOL’d at this one. I think it was because I feel the same way. Although I wouldn’t want to hurt my fist, so I’d like to beat him with a hockey stick, or have Gangsta shoot pucks at his groin.

we really need some college hockey in DC. hockey just isn’t the same without a cheap beer drenched student section.

DU-SCS started off good, then SCS got pounded, and then all the sudden came back to life. So, 3rd period is about to start, with Denver up 4-3. This should be good.

by RedBirdie on Nov 27, 2009 11:17 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely DC needs college hockey. I think GMGM has been helping to push a team at Navy but I’d prefer a school closer to DC. There are plenty of options.

by Rob Parker on Nov 27, 2009 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

I think GW, GU, GMU, AU, MD all have club programs. Throw in Navy, and that would make a nice insta-conference. (I know, its not quite that easy)

Man, this game is getting real physical. SCS did an awesome job killing off a 3-on-5.

by RedBirdie on Nov 27, 2009 11:32 PM EST up reply actions

damn, SCS just got ROBBED, and then DU took it down the ice to make it 5-3 with less than 8 minutes left.

SCS, BTW, has a local product, Garrett Roe of Vienna, and back-up goalie Dan Dunn was drafted by the Caps.

by RedBirdie on Nov 27, 2009 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

Knew about Dunn. A college team here would be great for local product growth.

by Rob Parker on Nov 28, 2009 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

Seriously. There was something in THN about sending Heatley/Thornton/Marleau as a line on the premise of instant chemistry. I think they could do a lot worse.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 28, 2009 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

2/3 of that line is already on the team. Marleau has been snubbed enough, now he’s got a great season going playing with two locks. How can you not give him a spot?
