Sounds like it.
As to “why Carlson and not Alzner,” the answer may be as simple as Carlson’s $845,833 (annualized) cap hit versus Alzner’s $1,675,000. Or maybe not.

Or perhaps the ladies in DC need more time to prepare for the increase in team handsomeness that Karl will inevitably bring.

Funny when I was 12, not so sure the humor carries to adulthood. Would hate to ruin the memory by watching it now. Probably the same thing applies to watching ALF.
I do enjoy it when that actor pops up in other shows and movies…so recognizable.

With Knubes and Laing on LTIR, that opens 3.3M in LTIR room. You can fill with as many players (up to roster limit) as necessary.
85 and 83 eat 1.2M of that space, leaving only 2.1M left. Neuvirth eats .6, leaving 1.5. Not enough for King, but enough for Carlson. If Shamoo or Juice have to go on LTIR, OR NYLADER MAKES UP HIS DAMNED MIND (and decides to take the loan) then we can bring King up.
Still, I’m excited to see Carlson get the call.
As to why not recall another FWD. LTIR “Savings” does not help you down the line. Say you demote a 2M guy to Hershey, and call up a 500k guy. You have 1.5 to work with later. But if the 2M guy goes on LTIR, and you replace him with a 500k guy, you don’t get to “bank” that 1.5 for later.
It’s in the team’s best interest to recall the best guy possible for the money. As much as I’d like to see my RIT Alum get an NHL game, Carlson makes more sense.

I haven’t checked the math, but don’t forget the bonus cushion for Backstrom (and to a much lesser extent Perreault and Beagle). It’d be applicable to Alzner, too.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The only problem with this is that I haven’t heard either Knuble or Laing are on LTIR… Knuble may not miss 10 games. Laing, I expect, will. Have you heard something I haven’t?
by IRockTheRed on Nov 19, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions
The unconfirmed working assumption is that both are.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Ah. I’ll wait until I hear confirmation from somewhere before making that assumption… lemmee see what I can dig up.
I doubt you’ll be able to dig up anything – I’ve asked the question of the Caps media folks and have yet to get a firm answer. But dig away.
And I’m not sure they could’ve made the Neuvirth and Beagle moves if Knuble wasn’t on LTIR (those, of course, were pre-Laing moves).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Pretty sure bonus cushion disappeared at the start of last season (or gets immediately factored into the cap number until a player is deemed to be unable to attain a certain bonus). Where’s Sombrero, I remember him finding that lil nugget early last year when we were trying to figure out how to get Alzner up before Clark went on LTIR.
bonus cushion still exists. It didn’t last season because it was technically the final year of that CBA until it was re-upped.
The bonus cushion is back because teams that use it this season, can ammend by being under the salary cap by the same amount next season.
that couldn’t be done last year because there was no CBA in place for 09-10 until summer.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
by Sombrero Guy on Nov 19, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions
Thanks, SG.
IRTR. My initial assumption was that bonus cushion was gone. Thanks to this clarification, it seems as though only Laing is headed to LTIR, OTHERWISE, with 1.5 cusion to work with, we COULD have brought Alzner up.
I think it’s a “wait and see” for Knuble, they’d really like him back for early December. (Flyers, etc.) LTIR puts him back to mid-december.
SO FЯIENDS, IS BATTLE NOW.

Cap Space
So i am assuming Nylander is off the books then if we are able to call and keep so many AHL players up??? Capgeek has yet to remove him, so i have been confused if he is or isn’t yet.
Nylander is still here (on the cap). I’m guessing Knuble and/or Laing are on the LTIR list now.
"No TV and no beer make Homer go something something."
I thought you couldn’t put a guy on LTIR that quick though
by CAPFan4Life on Nov 19, 2009 11:06 AM EST up reply actions
you can put an injured guy on LTIR as soon as you want. He just has to miss 10 games and 24 days. The Caps tend not to put guys on it (and the y do it retroactively) until its really apparent that they won’t be back before those timeframes. But with Knuble and Laing, its obvious they’ll be out for some time.
I understand why they don’t want to be handcuffed by the 10/24 restriction. But its a little frustrating to watch them blow needed cap space.
and it was pretty obvious that Flash was going to miss that much time, anyways. Still would have had cap and roster issues when he got back, of course…..just seemed like poor management given the situation at that time.
I still think the theory was “we’ll have to pass Bourque through waivers at some point, so it may as well be now, when dozens of other players are passing through.” Mistaken, but not crazy.

Meanwhile we suffered more injuries and might have been able to give him a roster spot. Very misguided.
Void Boyd! Go with Perreault!
Yeah; I can see he’s doing very well for himself in Pittsburgh… “Christopher” has 2 assists in 13 games, and is sitting pretty at -3.
In the meantime, we have Perreault (AKA “Mini Me”), who has 2 goals, 3 assists, and a +5 rating. In 7 games.
All-in-all, I’d say we got the better end of that particular deal.
Over/under on when Perreault would have gotten a chance to play with the big club if we’d kept Bourque?

Maybe next year Nylander can play for a Swedish club and in the Khl at the same time. There is talk about AIK, Nylanders former club that plays in Allsvenskan is trying to play in the khl next year.
That would be one interpretation, they been stuck in allsvenskan for many years now and they are bleeding financially. Maybe this is the way out of a hopeless situation the fans are plenty pissed though.
What would happen to their juniors team and everything? Would it start to feed into the KHL, or how would that work?
Void Boyd! Go with Perreault!
At this point nobody knows but I’m guessing that it would be business as usual a lot of clubs have a pretty independent organization for the junior team that is built on volunteers and founds from the government and the mother club need to bring in the money from sponsors and so on. AIKs junior team plays in J-20 elit which is the highest league for juniors in Sweden but AIK is in Allsvenskan so they don’t follow each other through the system it’s purely decided by the results on the ice.
I believe he doesn’t have a NMC next year (but I could be wrong), which I believe would mean they could send him to Hershey, thus getting his contract out from under the cap.
I was looking for more Marcus Johansson video the other day and found this. Googletrans alert.
SO FЯIENDS, IS BATTLE NOW.
So if he isn’t off the books what’s to stop him from forcing the caps to put him on re-entry waivers because now we clearly can’t can’t play him and he is just eating our cap space without been required to be present in making his life hell.

by CAPFan4Life on Nov 19, 2009 11:22 AM EST up reply actions
they’re not going to buy him out next year. he can be stashed in the AHL next season, and thus no cap hit.
Exactly. If he’s not gone by the end of this year, he’s going to be stashed in Hershey, or traded to anywhere (doesn’t matter where). He loses his NMC, and thus he loses control over where he takes up a roster spot.
The Caps have no reason to buy him out or put him on re-entry waivers and those would both hurt them more than just eating the full value for the rest of this season.
by Steckel Me Elmo on Nov 19, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions
actually according to capgeek if nylander is bought out june 15th 2010.
2010-2011 a cap hit of 2.875 Mil
2011-2012 a cap hit of 1 Mil
Either you’re doing it wrong, the date is wrong, or cap geek is wrong….
The buyout is 2/3 of his remaining real value ($3M) spread over 2 years. There have been extensive posts on it, if you want a reason to use the handy Japers’ search function.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks.
Your correct buying himout will only cost us 1 million both years but the Cap hit for next year as a result of buying him out is greater than 1 Mil
When you buy a player out, what it costs you is what the cap hit is, spread over twice the term of years.
See also: http://www.japersrink.com/2009/3/14/797029/nylander-will-not-be-bough
Russian Machine very rarely breaks.
Yeah, but with his nmc clause expiring at the end of the season, it is only 4.5 for this season, then we can move him out of our cap space.
If he gets claimed elsewhere on re-entry waivers, we are on the hook for 2.25 for this year and the next two as well.

To further than point, the eligible players for the Capitals and the eligible players for Finland’s Olympic teams are two very different pools.

I’ve hardly seen him play so I have to take your word for it. Another one of your favorite players are tearing it up in the SEL; Peter Forsberg got six points in two games so far.
Ted’s checking out the new guy.
With defensemen Milan Jurcina and Shaone Morrisonn nicked up, the Capitals have recalled first-round pick John Carlson from Hershey. He’s here at Kettler skating with Tom Poti during beginning-of-practice drills.
How big of a deal is this? Well, owner Ted Leonsis has joined General Manager George McPhee in the management box perched above the ice here in Arlington for a bit. He’s not usually a fixture at practice.
Yeah, that’s probably Tarik trying to make events fit his narrative. Much more likely, Ted was going to be there anyway.

Looking at your proposed first line doesn’t make me feel any better. I’m sorry, I love Clark’s guts but he’s at best a third liner and really best suited for the fourth. Putting him on one of the top two lines is a waste. With Semin probably being out a few games, this is the chance to give Fehr a shot on one of the top two lines.
Fehr hasn’t shown he can keep up with OV. Clark, atleast has some resemblance of chemistry with OV…even if he hasn’t played at that level in awhile. I like the idea of Flash and Fehr together, but as stated above, I’d give them Backs for the short term.
Clark has 1 goal and 8 points in 21 games averaging 11:29 minutes a game. Fehr has 2 goals and 4 points in 11 games averaging 10:34 minutes a game. Fehr has scored at every level and it’s time to find out if he’s going to make it at this level by giving him some decent ice time with skilled players. Like I said, I love Clark, but that 30 goal season is a distant memory. He’s just not the same player any longer.
