This might have been swallowed up in the sea of posts yesterday.

Hey, at least he reached the same conclusion I did.

That’s a very tricky stat, it’s not even limited to SOG and I don’t think you can say that is proof the Caps are complacent when they are winning. It only takes one bonehead play to allow a quality shot that results in a goal, yet you can take 10 25ft wristers and never threaten. Look at Colorado’s numbers, have people been accusing them of getting complacent when winning?
What’s more, I expect the Caps to be outshot in the latter parts of the game when they are winning. When you are beating another good team and they have to press, they will outshoot you. For years and years it was the Caps outshooting someone 20-4 in the 3rd period but still coming up short.
Now – do I think the Caps get complacent? Yes.

Colorado’s numbers aren’t that much different when they’re winning so it doesn’t look like they’re slacking off.

True, but the Caps are ~25th in the league in that category and average/above average in the others.

Also, though it may be oversimplifying things, there are two reasons for a drastic reduction in shot differential when leading, imo – letting up, or going into a defensive shell. If I had to pick one group into which the Caps fall, it’s the former.

I wish it was the latter. If only we were talented enough to trap…

I could be mis-remembering, but didn’t the Caps come out and dominate BOS in the third period in a game that was still relatively close? I’d be willing to bet BOS was pressing hard for goals in their home opener but the Caps were into the game and played their game and didn’t let BOS do much with the puck.
