Tarik tweets:
Alexander Semin is out tonight. He’s been sent home to see a doctor, presumably about his sore right wrist.
Get well soon, snezhinka. I guess that means he was playing hurt in Jersey, which :: might :: explain some of the poor play.
SO FЯIENDS, IS BATTLE NOW.
Tarik said the wrist has been since the Florida game(s). Didn’t affect him much in the Islanders game, though.
Right. I think this may just be a good excuse for him to sit on the naughty step for a game. Of course, just speculation.
Fight, you time-wasting figure skaters!
I wasn’t being critical of Sasha, actually. I think it was in the morning skate before that game that they said he was skating with a brace on his wrist. Seemed to do a heck of a job in the game, but I’m sure it doesn’t do anything for the pain.
Rumor has it that the wrist problem is not his only ailment. I also recall hearing that he got cross checked in the back in the overtime Islanders game that we lost and was in some pain. He said he was okay the next day, but I wonder.
As “inconsistent” as Semin supposedly is, he was actually one of the more consistent producers last year and rarely had a game where he didn’t have either a goal or an assist. (He was a more consistent producer than Laich, Flash, Fehr; etc. who themselves are somewhat streaky.)
If Semin goes this long without points, something is definitely wrong. And now that fact is confirmed.
I also heard that the rubber shower mat wasn’t even on the floor and Semin tripped and stubbed his toe.
I don’t care about his points-per-game. I care about his points on a season. If he’s consistently missing 20 games a year then that factors into his consistency as well.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
That happened to me this morning – got in the shower and stubbed Matteau.

I’ll hopefully be back in time for puck drop – I got mad while on the phone and as a result I need a new one. Have fun, Caps fans.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
Sounds like a story. Hopefully you didn’t hurt yourself along with the phone…

Not much of one. Got mad, threw the flip phone, and it broke in half, screen to one side and buttons to the other.

I’ve done that. I prefer to not take responsibility and merely state that my phone lost a high speed aerial battle with the wall.

Unfortunately, was not a wall. Was the floor on the passenger side of my car. With as many times as I’ve thrown it, I was shocked it broke. Considering everything that car has put up with (Falling with my into a river, so many washing machine cycles, and the throws it’s survived in the past, a not so strong throw onto soft plastic really, I was surprised.

I’m calling at least one, if not two tonight. Needs to regain sole possession of the goal scoring lead. (More importantly, we need to win the game, but I can’t help the desire to see him back in the lead.)

Amazing beer.
Give North Coast Brewery’s Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout a try. A 4 pack of that is $10 at a VA Total Wine & More, and that will be more than enough for the night….

Aren’t there Total Wine and More stores in MD? There should be. They have Old Rasputin. It’s one of my top 5 favorite beers (which actually consists of at least 20 beers).
I haven’t tried it yet but here in Lexington, KY they have Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale which is supposed to be pretty good.
“Our Kentucky Ale is aged for up to 6 weeks in freshly decanted bourbon barrels from some of Kentucky’s finest distilleries. "
Yeah and actually now that I think about it I might have liked the BCS. There was another Chocolate stout that I didn’t like. Only way to find out is to try it again. Does it taste like a chocolate tootsie roll pop?

I had the Old Rasputin fresh from the tap at the 9:30 club in DC. It was heavenly. I also have a bottle of the 12th anniversary Old Rasputin that has been aged in bourbon oak barrels. It is around 14% abv right now.
People love Young’s Double Choc. Stout, but that is just too chocolatey for me…
Invite me over before you open that, ok? (I’ll bring a decade’s worth of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot with me.)

Nah, he wasn’t getting it done at the point. It sounds good in theory but it was pretty clear he needed to be moved off — the fact that BMo was so stellar on the point (easily better than AO) clinched it.

Yeah, they are great, but the commentors aren’t worth the time.
There are some good people on Pensblog, but too many people that are obnoxious with their “love and knowledge” of the Pens….which I actually attribute to the fact that those same people are overcompensating for not watching hockey until 2006. They have to make themselves seem like the biggest fans now so nobody questions it.
I hear you. I get pounced on occasionally by those types. It’s funny when Frank and Hooks show me love because nobody is going to question their judgment.

It’s sort of like A2Y for me (not sure if you’ve read it). Every time I go to A2Y, my blood pressure rises and I want to punch a small child….but I just can’t stop going.
It’s alright. I’m usually watching hockey anyway so I like to visit other GDTs. When Frank and Hooks are there it’s enough. I’ll chat with them and whatever other reasonable fans are drawn to our conversation.

That Pens website is so embarrassing. I really hope I never come accross that again….
However, I don’t know how you guys even like Dan Steinberg. The Skins suck, the Wizards suck (I’m not sure…I hate basketball, but it seems like they always suck), and the Caps are awesome…..yet he can’t even write about the Caps?
It’s all Skins all the time, then when football season is over, he hops into the Dan Steinberg reserved seat on the Capitals bandwagon.
PLUS, in the articles he does write, he always manages to mention Crosby or the Penguins. He is a hack.
Believe me, you’re preaching to the choir about Steinz, it’s ridiculous how much Skins crap he trots out there.
That said, the transcript/post on the Boudreau HNIC radio article was good.

Did anyone notice the Caps let MP take a draw even though Steckel was on the ice? How much does that say? (And he won it but Steckel passed the puck out of the zone.)
Terrible shift by BMo. Bad PIM and then right out of the box he forces a long pass up ice when he had Green right by him going with speed. Make the simple play, vet.

MP has the uncanny, Backstrom-like ability to go into the corner against much bigger guys and emerge with the puck. Very impressive.

Well all he does is work and he has more speed and quickness than almost anyone else on the ice. If he continues playing like that I don’t see it changing. Off topic rule question
I’m trying to remember when the rules around players entering the crease were relaxed. Several years ago if a player on offense entered the crease before the puck entered any goals were disallowed. At what point did the league remove that rule? Was it part of the rule changes designed to create offense (allowing two line passes, cracking down on obstruction penalties, ect…)?
They changed it and made it more lax after the Brett Hull SCF goal. I’m not sure if they statutorily changed it after the lockout but it’s definitely more lax. It’s one of the things that pisses me off the most about NHL officiating.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

Me too. I think you should be allowed to go in the crease but any contact with the goalie is a PIM. I also think incidental contact outside the crease should be legal. You want to limit how far they can go to cut down the angle? Don’t treat them like the whole ice is blue paint.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
I’m pretty sure that they officially changed the rules so that a player is allowed to be in the crease as long as that player is not directly interfering with the goalie’s attempts to make the save.
by Steckel Me Elmo on Nov 17, 2009 9:04 PM EST up reply actions
I disagree. The old rule was clear cut, and didn’t allow for as much interpretation. In my opinion, that’s better than the “Well, was he pushed into him? Was he interfering with the goalie?” Blah.

Why don’t we play like this all the time? Offense gets the puck in deep, keeps up the pressure, defense helps in front of the net — and there’s no sign of a Care Bear anywhere.
So you’re saying you’d rather not have Semin?
by DrinkingPartner on Nov 17, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

That sounds like a pretty good lineup. I’ve never seen Semin on a line with Fehr. I always wondered how that combination would work. (I think Semin was on a line with every Top 9 forward, except Fehr, last year. At different times, he was with Fedorov, Laich, Flash, Nylander, Ovi, Backstrom, and even Aucoin.)
Honest answer? I suspect we’re a team that gets comfortable too quickly. Tonight, Ovi’s first game back, added an element of “new” and “fresh,” so the guys were a little more on their toes.

He looks more natural. It’s like when he’s pressing or thinking too hard he has a hitch in his step and isn’t making plays gliding. It’s hard to explain but you can see the difference from the start of the year.

Yeah. I didn’t think they were that terrible. I have a feeling BB wasn’t happy when they took that icing and got stuck out for a real long shift. But that was the shift Kotalik took his PIM. MP drew the PP as well.
