With first round picks, you’re kinda supposed to do something right. If Neuvirth, Bouchard, Osala and Perreault are threatening to (or have gotten) consistent playing time over the course of a 150-200 game timeline, then maybe he’ll become the GM people think he is now.

Yes, but Peter Bondra could have easily been traded for a Jakub Klepis. Robert Lang could have been traded for a Jonas Johansson. Sergei Gonchar could have been traded for a worthless defenseman, and so on.

I’ve never said that he wasn’t a good trader, but he was in a better position to acquire assets who had better long-term potential back then. Glory be to the rebuild and all, but we both know where the team is and where he wants them to be are two different things. It’s when we get to the latter that I’ll happily drink the kool-aid.

No doubt. Everything – trades, picks, free agent signings – builds to something, and if you screw any of ‘em up too badly, you’re not going to get where you want to be. Winning has to be a damn-near perfect storm, really.
What Campbell’s article reminds us is that had those more important trades not worked out, we might have Ovi and a bunch of garbage around him instead of the team we’ve got.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
in hindsight, i’m surprised the caps couldn’t get more for jagr. i guess it was a boon just to get (most of) his salary off the books, but it’s not like the guy had stopped scoring points. was it the pending labor negotiations that kept other teams from making offers?

I figure with first rounders, you’re supposed to so something right about 50%-67% of the time. McPhee’s record with those particular picks is better than that. (His record overall since 2000 is probably about there)

Sorry if the tone was strong, it wasn’t specifically directed at you. It’s a conversation that is pretty ubiquitous in Caps land. I think a lot of people are sick of hearing about who we could have instead of Fehr, and the discussion about the miserable ‘05 draft. You win some and you lose some and I’d say the Caps surely won their share in recent years. No need to belabor the bad drafts, IMO. Again, not a personal shot at you, just expressing my exasperation with the topic.

Ah, the ol’ Fehr/Flash “works well together” theory that I totally don’t buy.
My recollection of the times that Flash and Fehr were put together last year is that Flash defers to Fehr for some reason (who is clearly the less offensively skilled of the two) and looks like he’s trying to be a playmaker for some reason (with the end result of playing far more passively).
The way Flash is rolling right now that’s the LAST thing I want to see.

Detroit doesn’t bother drafting until the 4th round, it seems. Sorta like how they wouldn’t show up until game 3 of the playoff series.
They deal most of their higher round picks. They don’t really help them because they’re usually at the bottom of the first round. I kinda agree with that philosophy. If I can deal a low first round pick and get something of value back that’s going to help me NOW, I make that deal in a second.

They don’t really help them because they’re usually at the bottom of the first round.
I feel like that mom from the roll-over minutes commercial. Why are bottom first round picks not helpful? Someone please remind me where we dug up Mike Green (Hint: bottom first round with DET’s pick) and John Carlson (bottom first round with someone else’s pick). Are late first round picks guaranteed? No. But they’re better than waiting until the late second, right? I can list a ton of busts from the top 5 picks but nobody says top 5 picks are a crapshoot so they don’t matter.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Because for one, you’ll have a hell of a lot easier time having to explain why you gave away a lower first round pick for a veteran to help you down the stretch than having to explain why you gave up Braydon Coburn for Alexei Zhitnik’s corpse. Plus, you’re pretty good ALREADY if you’re picking in the lower end of the draft spectrum, and you don’t need a guy with top-5 talent as much as a team that’s worse off. You can afford to deal lower first round picks.

That wasn’t the argument I responded to. “They can afford to give them away” is not the same as “they don’t really help.” They could afford to give away the pick we took Green with. Anyone want to say it wouldn’t have helped them?

Good stuff from Bear Tracks!:
Defenseman John Carlson leads the team in scoring by defensemen with 20 points on one goal and nine assists, his nine assists tying him for the league lead among all rookies. He is also tied for the league lead in plus-minus with a plus-14 rating.
The player he’s tied with is none other than Karl Alzner… C’mon Nyls. Make a decision. Free up some space.

Right – two things have to free up for Alzner to be here: a) cap room and b) roster room. Nylander leaving takes care of “a”.

And column B takes us back to the Laing vs. Sloan clearing waivers debate we had a couple weeks back I would think.

I have a feeling GMGM is waiting to take care of “b” until “a” is solved. No use moving out all your D to bring up Alzner if that leaves you with a) fewer D to use and b) less cap flexibility than we currently have. He knows we are going to face injuries so may as well keep 8 D that fit under the cap until we get some flexibility. I’m not sure if that makes sense or not (logically or mathematically) but it’s my first thought.

I’d rather lose Erskine for nothing than lose Juice or Mo for nothing.
I think to improve this team, you need to clear space by dumping mediocre generalists. I understand how Erskine fits into a Stanley Cup winner because he’s a specialist. But ShaMo and Juice are perhaps depth, but nothing more. There’s nothing either one does particularly well (especially keeping the puck out of the net).
Sloan’s shown me enough that he can be a depth defenseman for a much more attractive price. So yeah, I’d rather lose Mo and Juice (and their salaries) for nothing than lose Erskine for nothing. But then, I signalled a couple of weeks ago that I’d officially hit the “addition by subtraction” point with those guys.
It’s not that they’re terrible. It’s that in some ways, mediocre is worse than terrible for a potential contender. If they were terrible, they’d have been replaced already.

Of course it’s better to get something than nothing. And I don’t think this is the time to just dump them. It makes sense to continue to be patient. But at some point, if there’s no market for any Caps #4-8 defenseman, I’d just dump them. And I’d ask less for Mo and Juice than for Pothier, Erskine or Sloan in part because of the respective salaries.

Oh, agreed that we’re not yet at the point of taking nothing for them. You do that with just long enough to incorporate Alzner and Carlson into the team.
And I do still think Erskine brings some degree of deterrent — perhaps more than Brash did all year. Also, when he’s well rested, he clears the crease fairly well.
As we covered it in the ranking the caps series this year (at least I think it was there), Erskine’s a better reserve than Juice — Juice is a better everyday player than Erskine. I don’t want either to be an everyday player. Therefore, I’d rather have Erskine.

Stecks has taken 331 draws at the dot (most on the team) and has won 61.9% of them (best on the team). I’ll take that production on the faceoff, for now at least. Eventually, he is going to have to produce in other areas to be a valuable asset on this team going forward.

You’re probably going to have to wait for a year/trade; the team will likely QO him in his last year of RFA-dom.

Nope. Stex is better than 0 goals. He’s not as good offensively as his PPG rate during the playoffs.
It’s stochastic.

I think I’m almost there. Honestly, I thought he could have taken the 3C role long before the playoffs last year; he can definitely score and given enough ES (even PP) time, could find himself in the 15-20 goal neighborhood. But last year, the production at center from people not named Backstrom was atrocious. This year so far, BMo appears he’ll smoke Fedorov or Nylander in 2C production, and MP may come close, depending on how long this recall is.
If that puts Stecks/Gordon sharing 4th line time, so be it.

Stecks needs to score now and then but it’s not exactly like he was ripping it up at this point in the season last year when he had two goals through 20 games. He’s hear for his faceoffs, his defensive play and centering an energy line. I think he’s done pretty well in those three areas. Goals are a bonus and if last year is an indicator, they’ll come eventually.
Yep. And let’s not forget that he’s a big-time Bruce fave. Probably #2 behind Flash.

let’s not forget that he’s a big-time Bruce fave
It seems clear that Bruce puts a high value on the guys who have to fight to make it in the league, just like he had to. It just seems like he’s determined to give guys the chance he feels he didn’t always get. Maybe it colors his assessment of a player’s ability now and then, but I like that in a coach.
But then again, the guys that get away with the most crap are the guys that don’t have to fight to stay in the league.

Stecks needs to score now
Why? Because the team is having trouble scoring goals? Their bigger problem is on the other side of the rink, where Steckel continues to contribute.
And he’s had his chances this year. There have been some big saves against him (and some flubbed shots). He’ll get his.

To piggyback off that, the team has scored 75 goals, which is tops in the league, and given up 62, which is 4th worst in the East. I don’t think scoring is enough of a problem to call out Stecks for lack of scoring.

They’re doing points differently in the AHL this year. 3 points for a goal, 2 points for a primary assist, and 1 for a secondary assist. NHL board of governors is thinking of adopting that system next year if it works out in the AHL.

That’s MP, Brooks, and BMo @ the NHL store in NYC yesterday. They interviewed BMo for NHL Live on XM and also NHL on the Fly, mostly about Alex’s return. I saw the interview last night, it was pretty standard. I think they also interviewed MP, but I can’t find anything on it.
Does this mean Matty has arrived? He already looks two inches taller.

Vogs weighing in with these lines:
Alex Ovechkin-Nicklas Backstrom-Chris Clark
Brooks Laich-Brendan Morrison-Alexander Semin
Tomas Fleischmann-Mathieu Perreault-Matt Bradley
Quintin Laing-David SteckelJay Beagle-Eric Fehr
I have to say that third line looks pretty special—I don’t know if it’ll work and I’d have flopped Fehr and the Professor, but color me intrigued.
I’d probably flip Brads and Fehr. The fourth line is going to be an offensive black hole anyway, might as well embrace it.
Otherwise I really like those combos.
And Fehr and Flash have worked well opposite one another in the past. The problem is, that would necessitate Bruce putting Fehr on the ice more than seven times, so maybe it’s a no-go.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Ah, the ol’ Fehr/Flash “works well together” theory that I totally don’t buy.

I tend to agree with this assessment. I think the success of those two was due mostly to the fact that they were wrapped around Fedorov during a Fedorov hot streak. Or am I completely wrong?

No. They managed to produce with Nylander, Backstrom, Fedorov, and Steckel as their center.

Yeah, I don’t totally buy it either. But it has had more success, I’d wager, than “Flash/Bradley” or “Laing/Fehr,” I’d wager.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Crazy enough, I think the Brads/Flash would end up having more success if it signifies to Flash that he needs to be “the man” on that line… besides Brads may end up creating more space for Flash to do his thing than Fehr would.
DC, where Hockey is a baffling ordeal.

I don’t know how beneficial it is for him to go over there, but I’m guessing his KHL salary in relation to his NHL hit made it a no-brainer to do if he wasn’t going to get much of a chance to get time with the big club.

filatov had threatened to permanently relocate to the KHL if he was stuck in the AHL again, per the columbus dispatch:
During training camp in September, he told The Dispatch that a demotion to Syracuse this season would make him at least consider going back to Russia, where he could make millions — more than his current NHL deal — playing for CSKA Moscow.

despite what he said in the PD interview, I get the impression that he’s not happy in the BJs organization because he’s not a trap guy, and it honestly doesn’t matter what level he plays at as part of the Blue Jackets, he wants to play his style of hockey. He’s not going to be happy so long as Ken Hitchcock is running things. Part of me finds it very prima donna behavior.
Completely agree. As much as I can get behind hating on the trap, it’s not a player’s call. You don’t hear Parise saying anything. I guess Gaborik was a little concerned about the trap when MIN was trying to resign him but he didn’t make a huge stink about it.

I’m also trying to keep in mind he really is “just” a kid, he moved halfway around the world and he’s been getting jerked around on occasion. You’re up! You’re down! You’re up…….in the pressbox! But don’t air your dirty laundry.
(ok, looking at it again, the one that really aired the dirty laundry was his agent, to SovSport. But it doesn’t take a whole lot of reading between the lines to see Filatov isn’t happy playing for Hitchcock)
Yeah he’s a kid, and I can understand not wanting to be uprooted just to get sent to Syracuse. But from what I can tell he’s pretty mature. He learned to speak English at a young age because he knew he wanted to be in the NHL. Maybe he has a Lindros-parents situation going on because I think his mom has been pretty involved in his hockey decisions.

Normally I’m not a fan of that kind of behavior, but I think I can cut him some slack. He’s made it clear that he wants to play in the NHL. If Hitchcock doesn’t think he can play in the NHL yet then why jerk the kid around and sit him in the press box or send him to Syracuse? If he has to deal with trains, buses, and a brutal winter, he may as well be making some cash right? I basically see this like the Caps letting Backstrom (and Mackan) stay another year in the SEL after being drafted. I think CBJ muffed this one, and if I had a guess I’d say Filatov probably has the skill to play in the NHL right now, but doesn’t have the defensive discipline. I’m sure there are plenty of NHL teams that would have him in the lineup right now.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
i agree. not going to fault filatov here. and from both the dispatch article and the puck daddy interview, it sounds like the blue jackets’ front office didn’t strongly object to the KHL move. there has to be a moment’s trepidation that he won’t ever come back, but for now he gets the PT he needs and everyone is saying the right things.

Dennis Maruk is 54, wow!
He was of the few bright moments in our early Caps years. 60 goals and 76 assists, not bad. We had season tickets then and one of the few games we missed that year was when Maruuuuuk scored the game winner as we listened to Ron Weber call the game. We didn’t go because of a snowstorm and a long drive from Baltimore—that was the night Air Florida flight 90 crashed into the 14th St bridge.
I actually went to that game. Didn’t arrive until first intermission due to bad traffic. All fans who were there got free hot chocolate.
The Caps win was the one and only good thing about that day. It was horrible otherwise. (I had gotten my performance review on work that day and, let’s say, it prompted me to bail out of that job.)
Then, the Air Florida plain crash and the Metro Orange line crash that killed 3 people and knocked one station out of commission.
